Customer Reviews:
Very comprehensive, though outdated in a few places.......2006-12-19
We have been to Thailand twice this year (Feb 06 and Dec 06) and I used the guidebook to explore Bangkok in depth the first visit and nearby attractions on the second visit. The recommendations on attractions and hotels are great. The restaurant guide is adequate, but I think Bangkok is simply too hard a city to have a restaurant guide that is either current or comprehensive.
On the flip side, at least one of the maps was very misleading at best or incorrect at worst. On the way to Hua Hin, the map states the highway (No. 4) goes through town, but it fact, it is a limited access expressway some 10 kilometers west of town and there is only one exit to get to Hua Hin. This caused us to take a 20+km extra trip to reach town.
Overall, the guide is a compact and surprisingly effective. Footprint guides are of a high quality as also evidenced by the other guides (South India and Cambodia) I travelled with.
Good guide, but lots of outdated info.......2004-04-06
Overall, I'm very pleased with Footprint Guides, and this one has the usual excellent set of information & opinions. But,I was disappointed in the amount of stale information in this book. It's just been published, but half the restaurants we selected from it turned out to be out of business. I know restaurants come and go, but some of these had been out of business for years. Maybe we just had bad luck, but there was enough out-of-date info that I'm wondering if they cut some corners to get a new edition out so everyone (like me) would discard their previous edition and run out to get this one.
A solid travel book.......2002-03-25
When I left for Thailand, I was uncertain that this book would provide the information I needed to navigate Thailand. I quickly discovered this book had a wealth of information. The book led me to many relatively undiscovered towns, hotels, and restaurants, all of which provided a truly rich traveling experience. As for its practicality, the book is lightwieght, durable, using small fonts to pack data in. When in the company of those carrying Lonely Planet, I found others consistently closing their books in favor of the recommendations in my Footprint guide.
This is the most practical travel series........1998-09-28
Forget Insight, Travel Bug and even Lonely Planet. They are all too heavy to carry on your destination. Leave them behind next to the armchair. Real travellers will want any book from this series: They are small, written on thin tissue paper, and print tightly spaced. The Thail book, which I am updating every two years has so much practical information, from hotels and fax numbers, to suggested itineraries, and maps. Indispensible to the travelling traveller.
The most complete guide of its type........1998-06-30
In the style of the Footprint Series the Thailand Handbook is an exhaustive source for even the most ambitious of travellers. It is the best source for practical information on hotels, transportation etc. It is not, however, as easy to use or as visually pleasing as many others. For those who want to have all the information with them on their trip, this will be the book that makes it into the luggage. Not for those who have trouble with fine print.

Customer Reviews:
Rough Guide better than Lonely Planet, Footprint.......2001-01-12
Just came back from a three week trip to Vietnam with three books: the Lonely Planet, the Rough Guide, and Footprint Handbook.
The Rough Guide is the best guidebook around for the country. It is superior to the Lonely Planet guide in the breadth and depth of coverage and especially its accuracy. I liked LP for other countries but here they did a very poor job.
I have not found even one instance where Lonely Planet provided information that Rough did not have. If you are traveling to the north, you may want to consider reading Footprint before you leave -- it has some interesting information.
Also, all hotels -- even the top ones -- can be negotiated down in price. Send them an e-mail and ask for special rates, corporate rates, etc. You can stay at the Metropole in Hanoi for less than half their rack rate.
Excellent coverage.......1999-11-24
As a former expat in Saigon with family and friends all along the Mekong Delta, I'm naturally interested in the precision and breadth of guidebooks on SE Asia. This one from Footprint seems to cover all the bases in a detailed and realistic fashion. Since there's always uncovered terrain, it's the one I'll bring on my next trip over. And for new visitors, I'd also recommend the video "Raise The Bamboo Curtain: Vietnam, Cambodia and Burma", available from Amazon.

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful, sophisticated lace designs.......2007-09-26
This book includes lace designs in such a range of difficulties and styles that everyone is sure to find something that catches their fancy. While I have not yet knit any of the patterns, they appear to be well-written and easy to follow. Can't wait to cast on from this book.
Lace Style.......2007-09-21
There are some absoutely beautiful patterns in this book, there is one in particular that I am looking forward to making.
Sizing variations noticeably change pattern.......2007-09-04
Very nice book, most of the designs are lovely. However, I'm the type of knitter who wants a chart for every lace pattern, no matter how simple. Not every pattern has a chart.
I'm currently working on the Tailored Scallops jacket on the cover, and the pattern implementation of the size I chose makes the jacket look much different than what is photographed. Because the feather & fan stitch is a fairly big pattern, this is somewhat reasonable, but I'm going to frog what I have and rework the pattern myself. This is disappointing to me, since my size is the medium one (I'm a 10/12), and you'd think the pattern likely to be used most would be written to show off the stitches. As it is, the dense part of the pattern dominates the lacy part. Fixing it will require more complicated instructions, not of the type where you can change the number of stitches and repeats with parentheses (e.g., repeat 2(2,3,3,4) times). Really putting the extra effort into patterning for each size would make this a 5-star book.
Lace Style...my favorite.......2007-08-12
I love this book....want to knit everything in it! The patterns are clear, and include something for everyone.
Fun patterns!.......2007-07-09
I own this book and think it was worth every penny I spent on it! The patterns, with the exception of the knitted dress, were very nice and I could see myself knitting them.
Book Description
Timeless and beautiful those words describe the shawls presented in this revised edition of the classic text. Shapes include triangles, squares, circles, and half-circles, with openwork, textured stitches, and lace edgings to combine as you choose. Everything you need to know to design and knit your own shawls is provided, while instructions for eight shawls include all-new photography.
Customer Reviews:
Traditional Knitted Lace Shawls.......2007-08-26
This paperback book (119 pages) has only black and white pictures. It is mostly a book on knit stitches with a mere 8 patterns. She does touch briefly on the history and origin of knitting shawls. Overall, this is really more a book on how to design shawls, choosing different yarns and needle sizes and is not suited for someone who wants to be able to pick up a book; find a pattern; and know which yarn to use.
condensed revision of first edition.......2007-03-06
I've got the first edition which was riddled with errors. I wanted charts so I ordered the second ed. The individual lace patterns are charted but the shawls are still written out. In addition, the number of shawls has decreased from 14 to 8. The book has been edited very tightly cutting down on anything excessive which includes some of the fun and some of the photos. However, it's still tops for help on designing shawls which is why it gets 5 stars from me. This ed still has a few corrections which are available from the publiser's website.
My review of Traditional Knitted Lace Shawls.......2006-11-04
I found out about this book on one of the knit list that I belong to. It was highly recommended as a great source for shawl knitters or those that want to learn about lace shawl knitting.
I have found it to be a great source for designing my own shawls as Martha Waterman has great imformation and lace knitting charts in the book. I highly recommend it to any one interested in lace shawl knitting or designing.
Shawl shapes and how to design your own.......2006-09-04
I'm new to lace knitting, but not new to knitting. I've become fascinated with lace shawls and was looking for a good introduction. This book is exactly what I was looking for.
After a brief introduction of the history of lace shawl knitting and the appropriate yarns to use, the author presents a detailed description of shawl shapes (triangle, square, rectangle, circle and halfcircle) and how to create them through increases and decreases. That's exactly what I wanted to know !!!
There are a few stitch patterns shown and a few complete projects to knit which are all helpful, but were not my main focus in buying this book.
If Ms. Waterman were ever to revise and expand this book, I would ask for a more detailed discussion of fitting stitch patterns into the various sections of the shawl while still at the same time shaping with increases and decreases. There is a brief discussion, but I could have used more details.
Now, with Martha's Waterman's explanations of the ways to construct the various shapes and my copies of Barbara Walker's First and Second Stitch Treasuries, I have everything I need.
Nice book.......2006-08-27
I am happy with this book. It has some example patterns and then a bunch of stitch patterns so you can create your own once you are comfortable with shawl making.

One Hundred Traditional Bobbin Lace Patterns.......2002-07-01
A pattern filled book with colour coded diagrams. Not recommended for beginners but anyone who is hungry for patterns this is the book for you.
Book Description
For modern architects experimentation with space and the house plan provides the most fertile area of innovation, allowing them to push established boundaries and question received conventions in domestic design. As we enter the 21st century, the incorporation of greater flexibility into housing has become a matter of urgency. The traditional notion of the family unit is being exploded. Small domestic groupings have become dispersed, with the fragmentation of familites and more people choosing to live alone. At the same time, the pressure put on space by multiple marriages and extended families means that the requirements for our home are never still, as they constantly expand and contract. The conventional layout for suburban housing can no longer sustain or cater for changing social needs.
This Architectural Design title fully explores the concept of transformability in house design. Through a set of introductory essays by Iain Borden, Catherine Croft, James Gallie, Dennis Sharp, Stefan Muthesius and Miles Glendinning, the roots of this phenomenon are examined in 20th-century design. It is, however, through the eleven case studies of contemporary architects' projects that the concept of transformability is stretched to its full. It is revealed to mean many things - the integration of technology into the home, the use of modular systems to facilitate construction and planning and the development of complex devices for modifying and customising architectural space on a day-to-day basis.

Ho-Hum.......2000-02-03
Thid book was an overview of the Fleetwood Mac career. It covered nothing new, was full of reviews, which I thought was interesting because I was not there to read them the first time around. I would also like to note that this book was written by a man who is a fan of Stevie's and concentrates heavily on her career and has many pictures of her and not the rest of the band. All in all, a good book if you know nothig about Fleetwod Mac and if you are a Stevie fan.
Pure Drivel! Don't buy!.......2000-01-15
I am a hard-core FM fan, but I must say this is the most poorly written book I've ever read. Don't buy it. Save your money. It will tell you nothing you don't know. IT is basically the off-the-cuff rambling of a clearly not that intelligent and certaintly not even that enthusiastic fan. It is a total amateur job. It is loaded with copy errors, misspellings, puctuation goofs, and worst of all glaring mistakes, like calling Stevie's first solo album "Belle Donna". Come on! What kind of an idiot is this guy. As if that wasn't bad enough, the writing reads like it was written by a fifth grader. It is truly a chore to read this book. There are only a few photos, all are poorly repoduced, and 90% of them are of Stevie Nicks. This book will give you no new insight. This guy doesn't know diddly about the band- has no connections, he is just a fan. 90% of the book is just pull quotes from magazine articles and other FM books. The other 10% is the author's uninformed opinions. I cannot say enough about how lousy this book is. IF you want a good overview of the band which is objective, check out Bob Brunning's thrououghly readable "Thirty Years of Fleetwood Mac." Don't buy this turkey!
Boring reading for a longtime fan of "The Mac".......1999-11-10
This book held no info that I did not know already. It is mostley full of reviews (past & present) of the band. Not to metion the authur did'nt pay his proof reader enough (many typos thruout book). Claims the pictures have never been seen before, they can be found on numerous F.M. pages on the net. Glad I did not make a purchase that day.
