Good Information.......2002-10-04

Don't be fooled into thinking this is a really budget book. It's definitely not. In fact, the $70 is really $140 per day PER COUPLE, since they're assuming you're travelling with somebody else. If you're looking for BARGAIN BASEMENT prices, go with another book. However, if you're looking for reasonable though still up-to-par (a huge step above rock-bottom) accommodations and dining, this is a great book to use in Florida. The chapters written by Lesley Abravanel are particularly well-written and fun. The ones by Bill Goodwin are really great on budget options and suggestions, but are lacking personality. The third authors are for Disney. Overall, I'd recommend this book.

Awesome buy for locals and visitors alike........2002-08-30

I like in Florida and I bought this book to help me find the cool spots to take my friends when they visit. The "super cheap eats" and "cheap sleeps" sections have wonderful recommendations for delicious food and more than comfortable accommadations. There are also "worth a splurge" sections so you know if you want to spend a lot you'll get your money's worth, not some overpriced stuck up establishment with bad service. The guide gives you the inside scoop on hiddle local favorite hangouts and eateries and where to find the most authentic ethnic food at the cheapest price. Each location described even has a section where the book details "Fun Things to do for free (or almost) in " I use this book constantly and LOVE it 100%!

Wonderful Book!.......2005-11-30

This book is a must have for any carousel enthusiast or anyone interested in the art of wood carving. All major carvers/manufacturers of the golden age of carousel building are covered. The photography is wonderful and there is a census of operating carousels in the back of the book. Since the book is written in 1986, many of the carousels that are listed have dissappeared. Check National Carousel Association for an updated list.

Awesome book! An absolute must for anyone interested in American Carousel Art! Loaded with close up photos of all the love of labor that went into these beautiful animals! Brings back many memories of the Great Danbury Fair in Danbury, CT which now unfortunately is a shopping mall.

OK I gotta give the book a great review as one of the authors is a very dear friend. (Marianne Stevens) I love the photos of the carousel that she purchased from my cousins!

Seriously though this book is an absolute must have for anybody not only interested in Carousels but also in amusement park history. It's a wonderful coffe table book with to die for color photographs and fascinating information.

Even children will love this book! It's beautifully done with glossy photos. Absolutely super.

This an excellent book giving a good insight into the history of carousels from their early beginnings. Crammed with beautiful photographs of the various animals and some rare photographs of the carvers and their workshops. A must reference book if you are into carousels.

Great Carvings.......2001-03-30

A delightful book on a vanishing art form: hand carved carousel animals, sleighs, and ornaments. The color photographs are excellent. The background on merry-go-rounds and round-abouts is fun. The carvers and their companies are discussed in detail. Timelines, a directory, publications, restoration services, music, and a brief bibliography are included. I would have preferred an annotated bibliography, and citations of non-bound materials. In any event, this one is a keeper, and will give many hours of enjoyment.

The short version is that this was like reading a novelization of a bad Lifetime movie (which is a redundant statement, anyway). The good news is that you can skip entire chapters and not lose track of the story.

One stormy night, Nick Red Shield finds a battered, lost woman on the road. She gives her name as Joey, and refuses to go to a hospital or contact authorities. Nick takes her home to heal, not knowing she is Lauren Davis, a young mother on the run from the mob boss who stole her son and wants her dead. Lauren has no plan to make her dream of regaining the real Joey come true, until she gets to Nick's home. His new horse is a champion racer, with the right jockey, and she is that. The horse is also the perfect bait to lure her ex. The only flaw in her plan is that to achieve her goal, she will have to leave Nick, the man she has come to love.

**** There is no waiting for this story to kick into high gear. From the first page, the reader is intrigued, and things only go up from there. Lauren's quest is both suspenseful and heartwarming. In the past, I've considered this author's pace too slow, sometimes. There are no complaints at all in this book. ****

Pretty Ponies.......2007-02-24

I bought this book for my mother, but I enjoy it as much as she does. The full color pages that are jammed full of art images, are endlessly entertaining. It was interesting to see how they went from concept to production. The photo quality is great. A definite must if you collect the figures. But would be appreciated by horse lovers, artists, or even as an idea book for a new style of merry-go-round horses.

We have a horse crazy granddaughter. We bought her the Medicine Horse then saw that there was a book describing the artists and the stories of the various painted ponies. The book seems a very good complement to the painted ponies and provides some insight into the artists' objectives.

Once you've seen the real thing............2005-10-13

First of all, the love of and appreciation of the horse combined with an artist's imagination and varied subject matter can only create some form of magic. Some speak to your inner being and fill that spot that you've wondered what was missing. I started backwards by purchasing the resin pieces and then had to know more!! Thankfully, the Native Americans have kept so much folklore alive but also the love and sincere appreciation for THE HORSE. I love to study each horse and then what the artist has shared about his or her journey to the chosen design. If you do not know a real horse, go find one and get to know it. Support the wild horses and the unwanted horses that are killed for meat. What a image it tells of 21st century mankind. The horse has been there for every civilization to succeed. Thank you to the incredible artists that awoke our quieted spirits to one of renewed appreciation & beauty.

Delightful Overview of the Collection and How It Came To Be.......2005-02-13

I bought this book in paperback at the same time that I bought four horses from a store and then--using the book as a guide--ordered two more from the web site.

It tells a great story and is a pleasure to have.

My only complaint is that the book focuses on telling a story with larger photos of a very small number of the horses, and then gives each of the **many** other horses in the collection nothing more than a thumbnail, literally (twelve 1.5 inch bu 1.5 inch tiny tiny tiny photos).

I would strongly encourage the sponsors to do a new edition that gives a quarter page to each horse, and also specifies the material that the horse is made of--I find the ceramic glaze horses generally disappointing.

This book is a vibrant collection of over 140 stunningly beautiful and fantastically creative Painted Ponies as photographed by Eduardo Fuss. Created from the minds of some of the Southwest's foremost artists, the life-size horses serve as a publically accessible outdoor art exhibition, and ultimately as a unique vechicle to raise significant money for charitable causes. The vivid photography shows complete ponies as well as the fine detail work that make this art project the success story it has become.

Author Rodney Barker provides the context for the history and spiritual background that is the special inspiration of the Southwestern and particularly Native American artists who so far have dominated this ongoing project.

I find I can't stop paging through this fantasy world of horses painted with Southwestern landscapes, Native American imagery, contemporary and futuristic themes that run the gamut from surprising realism, emotional subject matter, patriotism and humor. review from Holocaust historian.......2004-12-22

Considering the sheer volume of Holocaust accounts, it has become incumbent upon the author of each new title to justify its existence. Diane Wolf does this by claiming "a substantially different spin from conventional Holocaust testimonials." By this she means that most oral history interviews of Holocaust survivors give short shrift to their lives after the war and give little attention to how they might have gone on to create meaning and a new life out of the chaos and horror that they once endured. For example, the Shoah Foundation video interviews cover their subjects' post-war lives only briefly and conclude with a view of the survivors surrounded by children and grandchildren. With a seemingly happy ending thus affixed, any continuing bitter memories, regrets, and unresolved trauma on the part of the survivors are downplayed, or not explored at all. Wanting to avoid such an oversimplified portrayal, Wold takes a life review approach to reveal how her subject's personal identity was "reconfigured in a post-Holocaust world."

Following an introduction that blends the theoretical (editing methodology) with the personal (her long-term friendship with her subject), Wolf presents her interviews with Holocaust survivor Jake Geldwert. Mr. Geldwert recalls his life growing up in the predominantly Jewish town of Auschwitz prior to World War II, the rise of Nazism and outbreak of World War II that results in his imprisonment at the Auschwitz concentration camp, a recounting of that imprisonment, and an account of his eventual liberation, marriage to his wife Jeannette (who was also in Auschwitz), and their post-war adjustment period. He goes on to describe their emigration to America, and new life in Ithaca, New York, where for many years he worked at the grocery story of his wife's relatives. The book ends with Mr. Geldwert's expressed hope that younger generations will "remember what happened to the generation before, to watch out to do the best they can to have a peaceful world."

Whereas books based on oral history vary from the raw (such as certain Texas Folklore Society Publications) to the well-cooked (Studs Terkel), this one may be considered lightly steamed. The five chapters that comprise the main body of the text consist almost entirely of Geldwert's words. Though the lack of explanatory material may leave some general readers adrift, many of the stories speak for themselves. My favorite anecdote of Jake Geldwert dates from a time many years after the war when he was taking his oral examination to receive United States citizenship. The interrogator sprang a question on him at the end that was not in his study book: "How come they have a Senate and a Congress? Isn't one of them enough?" Mr. Geldwert's winning reply: "In our home town at home when we served the tea, they gave you a glass of tea and they gave you an empty glass right with it. Why did they give you the empty glass? Because if the tea was too hot for you, you poured it into the other one to cool it off. And the same thing here. You put a law into one house, so if it's too hot they cool it off in the other one."
