          3 out of 5 stars Caveat Emptor.......2001-05-01

I bought the Time Out for Florence since I thought it would be the best guide for shops and restaurants. Time Out seemed to provide good, up-to-date commentary on shops, restaurants, sites, etc. In Florence, however, I found a major problem with the book. I discovered a number of inaccurate addresses and open times for shops, restaurants and museums. I wasted valuable time tracking down the nonexistent addresses or going to places which were closed at times the book said they would be open. If you decide to buy this book, my advice would be to call the shop, restaurant, museum, or wherever you want to go in order to verify the address and/or open times.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for Restaurant Searches!.......2000-12-01

On our recent trip to Florence, my sister had this book, and I had Access Florence & Venice. Although my book organizes by districts and is therefore useful when out and about, the restaurant listings have much to be desired. My sister's recommendations out of Time Out were all EXCELLENT, and we decided halfway through our trip to ignore my book's restaurant listings and use Time Out exclusively.

5 out of 5 stars Raves for Time Out Florence and Tuscany.......2000-07-28

I've relied on Time Out Guides and Magazines for several years in planning travel in the states and abroad. Time Out Florence did not dissapoint. It is easy to use and full of useful, and not always easy to find, information. I especially like the publisher's inclusion of information for the gay and lesbian traveller. Buy this book!

              Product Description

The 2005 edition of this well-known reference work for the tax community provides an introduction to the application of the United States international taxation system to taxpayers investing or transacting business in the US and other countries. In a relatively brief and manageable form, it sets forth the principles adopted by the US in taxing US or foreign individuals and corporations as they invest, work, or carry on a trade or business in the US or abroad. The presentation focuses on ten specific aspects of the subject matter: general aspects of the corporation income tax, the individual income tax, the tax treatment of partnerships, trusts and estates, and accounting aspects; the basic jurisdictional principles adopted by the US with respect to application of its income tax to international investment and business transactions; the US rules for taxing foreign corporations, foreign partnerships, foreign trusts, and nonresident aliens on their business and investment income derived from US sources; the basic mechanism adopted by the US to alleviate international double taxation on foreign source income derived by US persons; the income tax treatment of foreign corporations controlled by US shareholders; the general inter-company pricing rules and special transfer pricing rules applicable to particular transactions; rules for the treatment of transactions involving currencies other than the US dollar; situations in which US income tax treaty provisions modify the basic rules; and the wealth transfer tax system, including modifications made by estate and gift tax treaties. Throughout the discussion, the authors incorporate references not only to the Internal Revenue Code provisions under discussion, but also to relevant Treasury Regulations and other administrative material and to important cases that have arisen. The materials are current as of 1 January, 2005 and include a complete discussion of the changes made by the 2004 Jobs Creation Act. For non-US tax practitioners, tax professors and students both within and outside the US, and others seeking a structural framework within which a US tax problem can be placed, Introduction to United States International Taxation offers the ideal reference source.

4 out of 5 stars A useful guide for carnival glass.......2004-05-06

I had no problem finding any of the patterns that I was looking for. Having only been collecting carnival glass for about three years, I found the book to be informative and a great referance to fall back on if I was unsure of something. This book was one of the best purchases that I have made when it comes to referance books.

This book is useless if you do not know a lot about carnival glass. I was very disappointed, it was a waste of money for a beginning collector!

1 out of 5 stars standard carnival glass price guide 12th ed.......2002-02-26

not user friendly to a beginning collector.

                    4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2001-12-02

I loved this book. It is the best book I have found to use in identifying carnival glass. The pictures are crystal clear, and the number of items included is astonishing. However, the greatest weakness is that the book does not list the year(s) that any of the items were made. That is a huge weakness. You may find out who the manufacturer is and the name of the item, but not knowing the date leaves a huge gap in information.

4 out of 5 stars This is an Encyclopedia and more........2001-07-27

This book is what it says and encyclopedia. I t was not designed for any group beginner or expert. It is well organized and packed with descriptive color pictures. This encyclopedia tell how when and Where the glass was made and more important shows patterns to help you recognize what you are looking at. The "Marks" section is worth it in its self.

My two favorite objects in the book (of which I am not sure I would want in my house) are:

                    Purple Pickle Paperweight:

"Of All the oddities I've come across in carnival glass, this is probably the oddball of all time."

                    Scottie

"Surly there isn't a collector that hasn't seen these in the flea market in Scotties, poodles, dear, duckies, or rabbits. They are all covers powder jars, all marigolds, and made near the end of the carnival glass heyday. Still the coloring is usually respectable, and they are cute little things"

Personally I do not think they are so cute; but my wife has the "Dear" that was handed down from her mother.

Again this book is worth just being aware of the diversity in Carnival Glass

5 out of 5 stars Excelent reference book.......2005-12-21

This is un important and complete carnival glass book.
Really first class information, and a good table of prices.

                    3 out of 5 stars Fairly nice book...with a few flaws.......2002-09-23

The color pictures are numerous and nice....the price guide in the back is a pain...it would be much better if the prices were on the same page as the picture. I think the price paid for this book was more than fair.

3 out of 5 stars Colorful Pictures Do Not Make A Great Book.......2001-08-18

Granted, the color pictures do make for a nice book, however, I found many of the pictures to not show the pattern clearly. Sometimes it was the item they chose to show that caused the difficulty--patterns on cups, candlesticks, and vases do not give me what I need to see to verify the pattern on a bowl. I believe a bit more variety of pictures is need for many of the patterns. I would rather see a picture of a collection with a clear detail of the pattern. As far as the price guide goes, at first I found it inconvenient to flip to the back of the book to check the prices, but I got used to it and put up with it. Carnival glass resources are few, so this book is out there, but in my opinion, it's not a great book or a good value.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Reference On Carnival Glass.......2001-05-30

This Edwards & Carwile Encyclopedia is an excellent reference book for the "Carnival Glass" enthusiast. It has clear color photos, large print, is alphabetically listed, has informative descriptions, and a detailed price list. I never go shopping for carnival glass without taking this book; it's a necessary shopping guide. I always find the piece shown, described, and priced in this book. SM

If your family has any Dutch heritage your family castle will probably be in this book. Each castle is described in some detail, many have a single BW picture but the more significant have large colour spreads. The external ( there are no internal pictures ) Dutch style of larger farm house and castle is well presented in this book and the general presentation quality is excellent. While in Holland I visited a number of castles and I have found this book to be a superb reminder of the places and sights.

A core text for the Law and Society or Sociology of Law course offered in Sociology, Criminal Justice, Political Science, and Schools of Law. · John Sutton offers an explicitly analytical perspective to the subject - how does law change? What makes law more or less effective in solving social problems? What do lawyers do? · Chapter 1 contrasts normative and sociological perspectives on law, and presents a brief primer on the logic of research and inference as it is applied to law related issues. · Theories of legal change are discussed within a common conceptual framework that highlights the explantory strengths and weaknesses of different arguments. · Discussions of "law in action" are explicitly comparative, applying a consistent model to explain the variable outcomes of civil rights legislation. · Many concrete, in-depth examples throughout the chapters.

                            Book Description

Thorn lace:Mojmir - a Migrant's Lot is a non-fiction book of moving memoirs and intimate reminiscences recounted by a Croatian migrant living in Australia,Mojmir Damjanovic, to the author and written with the vivaciousness and vigour of a work of fiction. It is a story of courage, dreams, hopes, tragedies, suffering, loyalties, love, joy, despair, infidelities, agony, loneliness ... and vitriolic candor of battling for ones identity and bi-national pride. It is a story that simbolises the joys as well as agonies of migrants forging a new life away from their homelands.

"If the system is rorting you, then you are justified in law and in morals to rort it to survive ... It is a hot afternoon in late October and the five rebels are gathered...to tell yet another reporter why they are prepared to lose their homes in an attempt to defy the corporation and the egg marketing system ... Watching these men closely, one does not see a group of rorting farmers intent, in the rhetoric of the corporation, on making profit by 'ratting on their mates'. One sees instead the proud Croatian face of Mr Damjanovic, 68, in heavy black-rimmed glasses ..." (The Sydney Morning Herald, p.81-86, November 5th 1988). To arrive at this point in life Mojmir Damjanovic recounts in "Thorn lace" the path: From painful poverty of 1920's Croatia, to the despair of his father's untimely death, through the hardships of surviving World War II in Nazi occupied Austria, across the horror and suffering inflicted by Communists in post-War-Yugoslavia and the tragedy of Croatian Holocaust, with the driving urge to beat poverty and escape deadly persecution - came his migration to Australia in 1951. He recounts the path of forging a new life in a strange country (Australia) whose language and culture are completely alien to him. His story of success is paved with sweat and tears, joy and tragedy. His story is a story of all migrants: a story of destiny where in migration one is forced to live simultaneously two parallel lives. One of these is the life that is lived through the heart and mind, memories and nostalgia for the "old country" and the other, the life of everyday living and struggles in the process of creating a new life in a strange land that beckons a migrant to acquire a new identity as a social and cultural human being.

"Thorn lace" is a book that is particularly appealing to children of migrants born outside their parent's first homeland. It gives a potent insight into the human paths one is forced to take in life once one is torn from ones homeland and forced to live and create or bring up his family in a foreign land.

Specifically, Thorn lace is a book which familiarises millions of second and third generation children born to Croatian migrants throughout the Western World with the long history and the soul of Croatian nation.

ýThorn lace: Mojmir ý A Migrantýs Lotý is a melange of personal memoirs, reflections of pivotal historical thresholds that shape the soul of a nation and stories of persecution and migration. It is often said ý and rightly so ý that an individual is a mirror image of the family he or she stems from, has lived with and is identified by. And although of Croatian origin and breed, the bookýs hero ý Mojmir ý belongs to a more cosmopolitan family of people: migrants. The book gives a rare insight into the passion of Mojmir Damjanovic the migrant and the many friendships, psychological turmoils of the soul, bitter encounters, brushes with death due to political persecutions as well as adventures encountered in life when forced to flee poverty and persecution. Although the book is about a Croatian migrant its stories of survival ring familiar to the lives of every person whose fate in life steered him or her through the path of migrating into a new country, which is foreign both in language and culture. Hence, ýThorn lace: Mojmir ý A Migrantýs Lotý enriches the worldýs literature about the hard fate of migrants. And that hard fate, the ýlotý, is personified in this book in the heart and soul of Mojmir who is catapulted into living a double, two parallel lives: the living of a life of relentless love and nostalgia for his First homeland in his heart and the living with his physical presence and participation of the daily life of his Second (New) homeland through which he struggles to forge a new life in a ýforeigný land. The two lives, although parallel, often clash, often create hardships and often create a painful vacuum between a parent and child, especially when the parent and the child cannot communicate fluently in the same language.

Memoirs? A Diary? A Dossier? A Novel? A witness for history? A lesson in survival in adversities? An odyssey through the human heart? Or all this and more combined in one book that is compelling and seizing. The author Ina Vukic has skilfully managed to combine personal memoirs of Mojmir Damjanovic, a Croatian migrant living in Australia, with excerpts from Croatian history into a cohesive and riveting flow, juxta positioning the psychological impacts of migration upon human souls. The book reads more like a fiction novel than non-fiction, and itýs the rich dialogue and direct speech with which this book is written that makes it so uniquely appealing and lively.

ýThorn lace: Mojmir ý A Migrantýs Lotý takes us on an incredible voyage of courage and determination. Itýs every chapter begins with quotations from well known personalities of ýWesterný literature and politics, the quotations that guides the reader to the moral underflow, which will follow, evoking curiosity, gripping the reader to continue reading, nudging the reader to relive Mojmirýs world.

ýMy beginning, conception and birth belong to a certain part of this rotating Earthýs ball that is most beautiful - to Croatia, the homeland of my ancestry, and the building of my home, my family and my personal wealth begin on the other side of the Earthýs ball - ýDown Underý, across the Equator, in the land of Aborigines, under the Southern Cross, on Terra Australisý. And so the story of Mojmir Damjanovic begins. From painful poverty of 1920's Croatia, to the despair of his father's untimely death, through the hardships of surviving World War II in Nazi occupied Austria, across the horror and suffering inflicted by Communists in post-War-Yugoslavia and the tragedy of the Croatian Holocaust, and the shrapnel of the Jewish Holocaust when he marries a German Jewess. With the driving urge to beat poverty and escape deadly persecution - came his migration to Australia in 1951. In Australia he will endure insufferable hardships, but his determination to rise above poverty and to conquer the scorching pain of persecution that had forced him to abandon life in his homeland witness his stepping stones to riches and success, even at the cost of fighting establishments and bureaucracy of the Australian ýEgg Boardý ý which threatened his prosperity as a hard working man ý for over two decades. It was this fight against bureaucracy that made Mojmir Damjanovic into a publicly known figure during 1980ýs in Australia.

Indeed, Mojmir is a rebel! But - a rebel with a cause; a rebel who wins in the end. His cause is the truth. And there can ever be only one truth, about anything. Any other version is contrived, an opinionýIn this book he bares his soul, he bares all ý the author lets him speak, the author does not stop him even when he recounts the most intimate moments of his life ý at the points in a story where most storytellers stop, Mojmir continues.

In my work as University lecturer I had rarely encountered a book that captures history of a nation through episodes of life experiences of one person. The easy and natural flow with which the author of ýThorn lace: Mojmir ý A Migrantýs Lotý manages to alternate between factual history of the Croatian nation and episodes of personal experiences of her hero, to mingle them in a logical mix, making history come alive, is the aspect which particularly seized my curiosity and admiration for this literary work.
