Book Description
Egypt is primarily a land of deserts and mountains, the habitable Nile Valley and Delta occupying less than 5 percent of the country. Although the ancient Egyptians lived on only a small fraction of the land, they made extensive use of resources from the less hospitable areas, exploiting the opportunities and adjusting to the constraints of their physical environment. The Geology of Egypt: A Traveler's Guide describes these features and more, providing for the first time a guide for the traveler to Egypt interested in learning about its history from a different perspective.
The guidebook presumes no background in geology or related fields and provides an introduction to the relevant geological concepts, presenting examples to illustrate how the country's geological features influenced Egyptian civilization. Most examples are selected from the pharaonic period and Greco-Roman period, though many cases also illustrate how geological factors continue to have an impact on modern Egyptian society.
The text is organized as a trip on the Nile from Lake Nasser downstream to the Delta, with chapters devoted to such popular sites as Aswan, Luxor, and Giza. Also covered are the Eastern and Western Deserts, as well as the Sinai Peninsula. Maps, illustrations, photographs, and an extensive glossary help make a complex but intriguing subject accessible to everyone.
Customer Reviews:
Good, but could have been better........2006-09-08
A rather hit-and-miss affair. The opening chapters on `geological concepts' and `the origins of rock types' are good basic introductions to geology. At first glance, the rest of the book seems up to the job. However, it falls down in two major areas. The first is an almost unforgivable lack of geological maps. This is meant to be a guide to the geology of Egypt, and yet there are only two geological maps in the entire book (on pages 22 and 98). To make matters worse, neither map has a distance scale on it. As a geologist who is interested in the geology of places I visit on holidays, this is a serious oversight. Maps are essential to any book that calls itself a guide to geology. More frequent maps would also negate the need for having to constantly turn back to page 22 to see where the rocks mentioned on each stage of the trip fit into the overall picture. The second area where the book falls down is in a failure to add detail to the stratigraphic column given on page 23. Periods (e.g. Jurassic) are not broken down further to give formations or members. This would be useful if the reader wanted to compare the geology of places such as Britain or the USA with Egypt at particular times in a bit more detail. This oversight is compounded on page 78 where the author mentions the "Serai Formation of the Thebes Group" and the "Esna Shale" without clarifying where these fit in to the overall picture.
The dust jacket states that the author has "..studied Egyptology, archaeology, and geology extensively". It does not actually state what subject(s) her actual professional qualifications are in. From what I have seen in the book, geology does not appear to be one of them. It comes across as the work of an enthusiastic amateur, who has read lots of other peoples' work but who lacks the knowledge of what a geological guide is all about.
An Accessible Guide to the Gift of the Nile.......2003-09-02
For civilizations, geology is destiny. If Egypt is indubitably the gift of the Nile, as Herodotus has said, than the history of how the great river was formed over the millenia is surely the place to start in understanding the great civilization that grew along its banks. This is a book that fills a much-needed vacuum: an accessible guide to the history of Egypt's geological formation for the layman tourist rather than the specialist. It also takes the reader on a fascinating trip down the Nile and across the country, documenting lost tributaries and mysterious rock formations. Even for a reader born and raised in Egypt, this book proved to be a voyage of discovery and a treasure trove of little known facts. Best of all, its accessible language and logical lay-out make it a pleasure to read. I highly recommend it for anyone planning a trip to that country or merely interested in the great civilization of the banks of the Nile.
A Much Needed Book.......2003-07-15
Until the publication of this volume, it was difficult to find a book on the geology of Egypt, and impossible to find one at an affordable price. "A Traveler's Guide to the Geology of Egypt" truly fulfills a need. A few brief introductory chapters put the newcomer to geology in a position to better understand what follows. As a further aid, technical words that appear in boldface are found in a helpful glossary. The main body of the book describes the geology of Egypt, and its impact and influence on the development of the ancient civilization, from Lake Nasser to the Delta and east to Sinai. The size of the book and the arrangement of the information within make it an ideal companion to the traveler wishing to understand not only the surrounding physical landscape, but the cultural interaction with that landscape from pharaonic times through the present. This book is clearly written, and plenty of maps, diagrams, and photos compliment the text. The extensive bibliography provides a good tool for further research. While it makes a good bookshelf reference, I look forward to taking this book with me to Egypt.
A "Must Have/Must Read".......2003-07-14
"A Traveler's Guide to the Geology of Egypt" is well written and extremely readable. Designed for people who have little or no prior knowledge of geology, it is still loaded with information that even professional geologists will find of great interest. As an archaeologist and a frequent traveler to Egypt, I will never again go to Egypt without rereading and carrying a copy of this book. Nor, I think, should any first-time tourist. It's definitely a 5-star publication.
A " Must Have".......2003-07-12
This book belongs on the shelf of every student of ancient Egypt. It is a book I didn't think we needed, but after reading it, I realize how important geology was to the development of ancient Egypt and its monuments. Aswan, for example, existed for one reason: granite -- boulders in the river and stone in the quarries. Again, the location of monuments, and the materials they were made of, were directly related to the availability of building stone. The author's writing style is clear and straightforward -- painless reading for a non-scientist such as myself. Dr. Sampsell explains all of the technical terms she uses (and includes a helpful glossary), and she avoids the common tendency of academics to sound "scholarly." My only suggestion for enhancement in future editions: Although there is a section of color photos, I would have liked more illustrations (and would have been willing to pay more for them). I will definitely pack this book with me on my next trip to Egypt.
Book Description
Mary Young Mary Young is well known for her numerous books on paper dolls that were published from the 1970s to 2000. She is back with an all-new title, 20th Century Paper Dolls, now in full color and updated with more than 1,300 photographs. Arranged alphabetically by paper doll company, the book provides brief company histories, when known, and pertinent facts for every item shown. Approximately 150 companies are featured, including Sam Gabriel, Milton Bradley, Magic Wand, McLoughlin, Dennison, Parker Brothers, Warren Paper Products, Stecher Lithographic Company, American Colortype, Burton Playthings, Transogram Toy Company, and many more. All paper dolls are identified by company and number (if they have one) and are assigned current collector values. A handy index and paper doll checklists are also provided.
Customer Reviews:
This is a fabulous mind-boggling book.......2005-11-14
This book, which retails for under $20, amazingly consists of over 330 pages of pure content in full color.
20th century paper doll publishing was dominated by just a few large companies, but there were scores of smaller companies that contributed to an industry that is now sadly in retreat. Mary Young's book looks at these smaller companies, whose heyday was mostly in the earlier part of the century. It catalogs the output of the smaller companies and provides profuse all-color illustrations of the paper doll sets. Also, it often deliciously allows the user to peek inside the sets to see the paper dolls as both art and historical document.
Countless sets are shown in this reference book, they are named, assigned monetary values, and descriptive notes are often attached. The value to the collector is significant. The identification of orphaned dolls and even loose items of paper doll clothing, the kind that pop up out-of-place in large paper doll lots, is made possible.
The only drawback to the book is that some of the pictures are blurry or are too dark. That is quibbling because a great number of the items of the items depicted in the book are rare. It was a real privilege to get access to these wonderful old and fragile toys.
Book Description
Before electricity, candles and oil lamps were the primary source of light in the home. The lanterns housing these light sources provided protection from fire and served as wondrous decorative pieces. Today, lanterns have once again become popular for their ability to bring a touch of warmth and comfort into the home.
With Magic Lanterns, readers will explore dozens of easy projects that require no experience or special skill, just a desire to be creative. Many of the projects rely on recycled materials and are therefore inexpensive to produce. The range of lanterns varies from the simple painted jar suspended on a string to huge illuminated bamboo, wire and fabric carnival floats.
Customer Reviews:
Incredibly Beautiful Projects.......2006-04-28
I don't own this book yet but I've probably checked it out at the library 3 or 4 times. I will buy it soon. I don't think the cover of the book does it justice.
Some of the projects are not so special but I really think the handmade paper ones are exquisite. I have made the string of lights project and was pleased. It would look very beautiful in a backyard for a night time party. Unfortunatly, I don't have the backyard.
I very much want to try making the unusal and truely magical looking projects such as "Icicles" made with plastic tubing, plastic wrap, and hair nets--guess you gotta see the photos to understand. I also want to make "Stars on Sticks", "Teepee Table Light", "Willow Fish Lantern", and especially "Flower Fairy Lantern. It would look so pretty in my daughter's bedroom.

Book Description
What are the long-term ramifications for adolescent girls who lose one of the most important relationships in their life? Every year an estimated one million teen girls experience death of their fathers. Countless more lose their fathers to divorce, addiction, incarceration or abandonment. Many helpful resources exist for teen girls dealing with such a devastating loss, but until now there hasn't been an authoritative guide for adult women to turn to in understanding how their behaviours and relationships may be shaped by losing their father at such a pivotal developmental stage. With gentle expertise, Laraine Herring blends poignant personal stories, the latest information in developmental psychology, and interactive exercises for readers in this much-needed, healing guide. Readers of "Lost Fathers" will feel a sense of connection to other women who struggle with issues related to commitment, trust, intimacy, self-confidence, and independence.
Customer Reviews:
From the heart, mind...........2005-05-16
Laraine Herring has written a book on father loss that really applies to mother loss as well, but specifically the father. As a reader, I gained insight into parental loss, and with the addition of her own poetry there's a personal journey that takes us beyond sheer intellect (which is very evident in this book, well written, intelligent). I'm left with the feeling that Ms. Herring is a woman of heart and mind, and with this balance a healing takes place. It's the kind of book you want to mark up, bend the page, read the poetry out loud, share with a friend, a group. Read it more than once, enjoy the process of heart and mind.

Product Description
This collection restores Jewish women to their rightful place in history. By sifting through historical reports, letters, memoirs, court papers, and other documents, the authors rediscover and rescue from obscurity the records of Jewish women from the Bible and Talmud, ancient Greece and Egypt, through medieval and Renaissance times, and into the modern period. The authors remind us of a heritage of Jewish women as property owners, traders, teachers, scribes, printers, poets, queens, commoners--proving Jewish women's presence as a vital force in the march of the Jewish people. This book is perfect for personal reading by adults, young adults, and reading groups, as well as a library reference. The book includes a bibliography, footnotes, and an index. Originally published in 1978 by Bloch Publishing, this 1990 edition includes timely revisions and additions by the authors.

Written out of history - an eye opener.......2002-02-20
I am fairly knowledgeable in Jewish history and yet was amazed at the documented histories of orthodox women in such diverse roles as Talmudic authorities and heads of Orthodox Yeshivas. It proves how in the past traditional Judism was much more inclusive of women. A must for all Jews especially women who want to learn from the past to benefit the future.

Astute and compelling commentaries.......2001-06-07
In The Limits Of Autobiography: Leigh Gilmore (Associate Professor of English at The Ohio State University) offers astute and compelling commentaries in relation to the social and psychic forms within which selected autobiographers told their personal stories in literate and unconventional ways. The informative, thought-provoking chapters comprising this unique and highly recommended contribution to the literary study of the autobiography include: Represent Yourself; Bastard Testimony: Illegitimacy and Incest in Dorothy Allison's Bastard Out of Carolina; There Will Always Be a Father: Transference and the Auto/biographical Demand in Mikal Gilmore's Shot in the Heart; There Will Always Be a Mother: Jamaica Kincaid's Serial Autobiography; Without Names: An Anatomy of Absence in Jeanette Winterson's Written on the Body; Conclusion - the Knowing Subject and an Alternative Jurisprudence of Trauma. The Limits Of Autobiography is enhanced further for the student with a bibliography and index.
Limitless Vision.......2001-01-19
THE LIMITS OF AUTOBIOGRAPHY is ground-breaking in its originality and range, dramatic in its intensity and depth, and endlessly surprising in its illumination of six fictive autobiographies (SHOT IN THE HEART, WRITTEN ON THE BODY, BASTARD OUT OF CAROLINA, ANNIE JOHN, LUCY, and MY BROTHER). Leigh Gilmore weaves a thrilling variety of approaches into her interpretations. Psychoanalytic, Feminist, Post-Colonial, Post-Structuralist, Trauma and Legal theories all inform her readings but never dominate the discussion. Theoretical knowledge is elegantly integrated, rather than applied, allowing Professor Gilmore to achieve a miraculous balance in her use of language: her work will challenge scholars while remaining accessible to any curious reader. I believe this is an ideal text around which to organize an undergraduate or graduate course in the study of fiction and/or autobiography; but Leigh Gilmore's knowledge of psychology and law is so impressive this remarkable work should find its way out of traditional English departments. I hope this is the case. Her understanding of trauma and the creation of imaginative texts--"autobiographies" that break the rules of form and bear no allegiance to literal or verifiable "facts"--could change the way victims of trauma are understood and treated by legal and health care professionals. Leigh Gilmore's ability to enter and unravel each text is testimony to her compassion and wisdom--and proof of her genius. This is profund and daring work, limitless in its vision of the human heart and the hope of transformation through the redemptive power of our own imaginations.
