Book Description
This firsthand account of a 1948 journey to a treacherous valley in northern India in search of a mysterious creature is both a classic travel adventure and a graphic record of an amazing expedition. The book chronicles the group's movement into a remote valley in Assam, where the inhabitants had only recently given up headhunting, on a quest for the Buru, an elusive, monstrous reptile well documented by those native to the area. The Buru, like the Yeti, Bigfoot, and the Loch Ness monster, has captured the imagination of adventurers around the world, and remains a popular subject of cryptozoology-the study of animals yet to be discovered by science. Recalled in vivid detail are treks through hazardous swamplands filled with cobras and leeches, and campaigns through perilous jungle where thumbnail-sized ticks and wild boar are indigenous, all in the hunt for the legendary saurian.
Customer Reviews:
A more innocent age.......2003-06-06
Back in the 1940s, Ralph Izzard was part of an effort to seek out a mythical animal in the Himalyan foothills. It really was a much more innocent time, as the seekers really do expect they might find a giant, unknown (by western science) reptile that lived in the jungle swamps. They track the beast both by logic (only tribes of the plateau know of this animal, they all describe it the same way, they all describe it as living in a specific place, etc.) and by trekking into the jungles of Northern India.
The book is also reminiscent of a less enlightened time, when mighty white hunters foray into the wild with childlike, lazy bearers to seek adventure.
While Izzard didn't find a buru, the anticipation that he might is what drives this book. It is refreshing to read the accounts of a proactive cryptozoologist rather than a passive interview collector.
Honest if uneventful.......2002-12-05
If you are farmiliar with the subjectmatter of the Buru, then you already know that the this book will not end with the author capturing the creature and solving the mystery. This book is an honest and interesting narrative of a 1940's trek into the jungle. It's very much a travelouge, sort of the day to day events that occur on such a trip. It is slightly dated, and like I said, they don't find the beast.
Still, I give the author points for honesty, and it is an overall good natured account.
Anyone who has a serious interest ion cryptozoology would like this book.

Book Description
Over the centuries, clocks have slowly, methodically and inextricably come to regulate every aspect of our lives.
Timepieces tells the history of clocks and how the pursuit of an ever better clock has had a remarkable influence on scientific and technological developments. The 800-year journey to a perfect clock involved the greatest thinkers, scientists and mechanical geniuses, including those who improved the accuracy of mechanical clocks to such a degree that sailors could successfully determine longitude. That advance alone resulted in an explosion of travel, commerce and political expansion that would change the world map.
Tracing the history of "the key machine of the modern industrial age" is a remarkable way to trace the histories of technology and society. Each chapter focuses on one era of the clock's growth:
The Celestial Clock
A Call to Prayer
The Priceless Possession of a Few
From Tabletop to Waistcoat and Beyond
The Craft Era in Watchmaking
The Industrial Revolution
Swiss Watchmaking
The Standardization of Time
The Quartz Revolution
Illustrated with beautiful artworks and photographs from museums and clock collections,
Timepieces is a thorough and attractive historical survey.

A resume about the mechanical clocks and watches development.......2005-01-22
This book is a resume of what is written on the brilliant book of David Landes, Revolution in Time. It has a huge amount of photos, and worths every peny paid.
The book, as mentioned by the reader above, does not cover American Watches history in depth. Even tought, is a very good book.

Customer Reviews:
Not as exciting as I had hoped.......2007-03-28
I haven't actually knit anything from this book yet, and I'm not sure that I will. I didn't think that the sweaters in the book were very "Vogue" although they do not look difficult to make. I would rate most of the patterns as Intermediate level. The pictures are all in color which is nice, but the sweaters are not on models...so it is difficult to tell how they would look on someone, even a size 6 model, in real life.
not so fabulous.......2006-10-02
I checked this out before purchasing it, and I am glad I did for I did not find the patterns in this book to be as "fabulous" as other reviewers did. There really were just a couple that I would be interested in making and those do not include any of the sweater patterns which comprise most of the book. The sweaters are very boxy and not particularly stylish -- not very Vogue, in my opinion! Yes, they are knit with chunky yarn, but that doesn't always equal plain and boxy. There is a variety of patterns here, with a couple hats; scarf; men's, women's and children's sweaters; even a pillow pattern. Frankly, the only sweater I would consider making is a child's sweater, the only interesting, stylish one in the bunch, but I have no child to make it for! If you are looking for a collection of sweaters that is "Vogue", stylish, or even just interesting, this is not the pattern book for you. I also have to say that the size is nice for traveling, but would not be too easy to keep open if you are trying to follow along with a pattern and knit at the same time.
A beginner's best!!!.......2006-03-24
This knitter's book is clearly written with ample help. All four sweater's I have knit (different patterns) from this book have classic designs with techniquely simple instructions. This should be a "must have" in every knitter's library.
Fun, quick, easy and modern!.......2003-04-01
All the patterns are great! Chunky knits means fast results!
The designs all look fresh and young (nothing too grandma-y)
I just love it! I am planning to knit most, if not all, of the projects! (by the way the yarns used in the book are easy to purchase if you live in US)
not exactly for the beginner..........2002-12-02
This chunky book is so cute, but, not exactly for the beginner knitter.
Having helped my daughter with her very first sweater project [we each knitted the Back-Buttoned Top]. Had she been on her own, I do not think she would have ended up with a sweater. As an experienced knitter, I can follow where the pattern might be going. I wish that more space would be used for type, making the instructions easier to read. I'd like to see the text delineated better. The finishing instructions leave something to be desired.
She substituted Reynolds Allagash for the yarn Karabella Softig in her sweater. I used 2 stands of Reynolds Eternity.

Book Description
With its awe-inspiring landmarks, its dense woodlands, and the delightful coolness of its mountain-tops, the region of Asir stands in sharp contrast to the usual patterns of Saudi Arabian landscape. "This could have been the site of the Garden of Eden," wrote St. John Philby in the 1930s, and as this extraordinary book of photographs demonstrates, the claim still holds true today.
The story of the author's two journeys around the Asir region is told through the architecture, frescoes and lifestyles of the people. Granted royal approval for his second project, Thierry Mauger has been able to gain access to previously unseen interiors and to win the trust of the people. In the process, he reveals how the art of the Asir region, the handpainted, brightly colored interior decoration, the painted façades, the symbolism of the architecture, and the unique landscape form a complex code which provides valuable insights into understanding this little-known culture.
In the midst of Westernizing trends, the author demonstrates the strong traditional forces which imbue the art and architecture of Asir today. New architecture is taking up forms and ornamentation from traditional regional styles, and as the author shows, the painted interiors by Asir women resonate with the traditions of magic and religion, blended with new images drawn from the contemporary culture.

Customer Reviews:
Very Good Cookbook.......2007-05-13
This cookbook is great. Its an ideal starting point for cooking for your baby. I really liked learning about using soy to help your baby get protein so you dont need to rely on meats. Soy is such a great and easy as well as cost effective protein source. I would esp recommend this book if the baby is vegetarian or has a restrictive diet.
Not a bland baby book.......2006-12-28
I found this book to be very informative and containing all of the information I was looking for. I don't want to only feed my baby rice cereal and single ingredient fruits and vegetables for the 6th - 12th months. This book gives quite a variety of ideas for blending grains, beans, fruit, vegetables, pastas and yes - meats as well as tofu type options. I was thrilled to find recipes for teething biscuits and graham crackers. I made one of the recipes for blended cereal with beans, brown rice, sesame seeds, and few other things. After I cooked it I had to leave, so I stuck it in the fridge. When I came home it had really thickened up, much like slow cook oatmeal does after it sits. Instead of thinning it with more water, I rolled bits of it into pea-sized balls and gave those to my son as finger food. He ate them right up! I didn't have to sweeten it or blend with fruit or anything.
The recipes are not broken down by age, but by meal category instead. The appropriate ages are listed very clearly at the bottom of each recipe. Some reviewers complain that there are few recipes for 6-8 months old. Shouldn't you be going through new foods one at a time during those two months to determine food sensitivities anyway? Eggs are an ingredient in some of the bread recipes. Citrus, milk, and honey are also ingredients for 10 months and up, but since they are cooked in the recipe, they hold no health threat like the raw forms do. Besides, it's recomended that milk not be given as a beverage for children under 1 year because of the propensity for children to choose the cow's milk over breast milk or formula and thus not getting the proper nutrition out of it. Eggs are cautioned against because of the allergenic properties in the whites, not the yolk. So use you own judgement with those recipes. Finally, yes, some of the recipes call for butter and spices, but don't most parents start giving their children food off their own plate containing these itmes as their children's teeth start coming in?
This book really is a great resource for those who desire to give their children the best food they possibly can without the boredom and unhealthy additives that most pre-packaged baby foods contain. Perhaps some of those who gave negative reviews need to start using some common sense and think for themselves for a change.
Not a book for beginning foods.......2006-06-12
This book is divided into breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack etc sections. Throughout the sections are ideas for babies 8 months and up and 10 months and up. Very few recipes are for babies 6-8 months. Flipping through the book to find age appropriate recipes is very frustrating since they are divided by meals instead of age. The book also introduces foods for babies 8-12 months that my pediatrician recommended waiting to introduce until after the first year. The book includes recipes for citrus fruits and eggs. The authors include soy and tofu recipes rather than many meat recipes. So for those planning to introduce their baby to meats around 9 months or older, this is not the book for you. I found some of the recipes overly simple--ones that I could have thought up myself-such as apples and apricots (simply steaming and then blending the two fruits). Other recipes seemed to complicated and two advanced for the age group recommended such as the wild mushroom soup made with onion and olive oil--for ages 8 months and up. This book does have some fun recipe ideas but many of them can be made if you are simply creative in trying fruit, veggie, and meat blends.
Not What I Wanted At All.......2006-02-23
I bought this book based on others' reviews and because I wanted to make healthy food for my 6 month old. Right off, I realized this isn't the book I wanted. They only have about 2 maybe 3 recipes for 6 months olds, so this book is better for older babies and toddlers. The authors talk about introducing egg yolk at 7 months. My pediatrician told us to wait until a year old for eggs. Also, they have recipes for citrus fruit for 8 months, which we were also told to wait until a year. The authors talk about a vegan lifestyle and how to get your baby started on that. My husband and I are not vegetarian, so if your like us, I would not recommend this book. If you are, maybe you would like it. They also talk about soy and tofu, which I don't plan on giving my baby.
Bottom line, I really didn't like this book. I would highly recommend Blender Baby Food (see review).
Great ideas for your little munchkin.......2006-02-08
I could not have been more pleased with this book. It has tons of great ideas for all ranges of babies. The author clearly states which month you could start feeding each dish - many other baby cookbooks just say 6-12 months. Obviously, what a 12 month old eats is different than what a 6 month old does.
Other reviewers who have said it has questionable ingredients didn't read it carefully. Some recipes call for milk - the author says to put in formula or breastmilk until a year of age and then add cows milk. And yes, there are some recipes that have sugar - but in minute amounts. For example, there is a fruit muffin that has 1/4 cup of sugar...and that makes 12 muffins. Have you ever checked the ingredients on the back of a jar of food? They have sugar! And other things like onion powder (Gerber creamed spinach), or even cinnamon(zwieback)! And if you wanted, you can always leave this things out and still have a great dish.
The book is divided into breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and also has a sections on soups and snacks. I found this great cause I was always giving my son the same foods. It also gave me great ideas on how to mix things together. Unlike other books it didn't call for strange fruits and vegetables, but it does provide some ingredients you might not have used otherwise, like mango, millet, barley and every kind of bean you can imagine! And they tell you how to cook all the grains that it calls for.
I will say the author does not go into details on how to prepare single ingredient baby foods, but that is pretty much just steaming and pureeing, so it was not a problem for me.
So far my son has LOVED every single item I have made, and I can't wait to make some more. If you are looking for some yummy and interesting baby cuisine that is also EASY to read, then this is the book for you!

He was his own Clockwork Orange..........2007-07-05
I think it's okay to use books for different reasons. I have my study-books, my bonk-over-the-head-books, my fluffy-fairytale books, and my coffee books. Imagine if you can get all this in ONE book, which would be this! It's fun. You can take your time with it. Read it on the beach, the bus, in bed, in the tub, at breakfast. Aw heck, go ahead and have a cigarette when you're done! It's an inspirational book about what inspired Bowie... What it was that was making his time, speaking to him through the media, through culture and fashion, other people's music, and the collective unconscious. Bowie was able to integrate different levels of culture (American, British, Asian) into the platform of his performance style, creating a SCENE. Which means, he finally had a huge following.
Okay... Much of the scene was about sexual freedom. Funny to think back on it now, as this book will entice you to do. Now, we approach a time where many alternative groups explore things like bisexuality as a "norm". Polyamory becomes yet another freedom beyond tradition and stererotypes, an option that peaks tons of interest, whether people like it or not. Sure, people had orgies back in the '60's and '70's. But haven't we all been swinging for awhile now? Bowie was right there in the beginning... Back when there was no term like "safe sex". I also think his emotions were conflicted much of that time; in his photos, his heart and chest always seem blocked. He was pulling on the raw energy of whatever that was in his codpiece. He was his own Clockwork Orange. And as you read and learn of his life, you'll see his first and most enduring love/sex affair has been with his fans. Bowie was always more passionately involved with us than he would have led us to believe. In that regard, he hasn't changed.
Bowie, when he finally started hitting it big at the age of 24, became his own scene. This has been parodied in films like "Velvet Goldmine", but also in his own documentary "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust". Great photos, decent, informative writing, this is worth your collection if you're a fan. You'll enjoy it and get a kick out of it. You'll learn much about what makes this person, David Bowie, tick.
Stardust Memories.......2001-03-21
David Bowie is the ultimate chameleon in rock. He has changed his image and persona and taken on alter egos so many times it's tough to remember them all. One that rises above them all and is impossible to forget is Ziggy Stardust. The image of the androgynous glam rocker has lived on and gave rise to Mr. Bowie's most critically acclaimed and arguably best album. Mark Paytress examines the making of the album as well as the circumstances surrounding the creation of Ziggy Stardust and his Spiders From Mars. The book also details Mr. Bowie's career before the album with the most revealing and interesting being his early days in the music business. Mr. Paytress writes in too much a fan style as opposed to a journalistic style, but overall it is a solid book.
2 1/2 stars.......2001-01-09
This book was okay, but more superficial than I expected. It's advertised as getting to the heart of the writing and recording of the album itself. I was expecting details about neat studio tricks (how they got this or that sound), whose idea it was to arrange the piece this or that way, discussions about different mixes of the songs, what the different people involved with the album were like to work with, etc..., but the book isn't particularly detailed in these areas. I would wager that a lot of the people who like this album enough to buy a book about it would also want more of these esoteric details. But I guess it might be enjoyable if you're kind of a casual Bowie fan and want to get an idea of the tenor of the times during the which the album came out. Great album, okay book.
Bowie By Any Name..........1999-08-12
I've not read it and see no reason why you ought to, other than any narration of Bowie's life is bound to be intriguing. He lived in such a manner that a detailed listing of the contents of his sock drawer could not be less than fascinating.
a great book!!.......1999-05-06
This book was great. If you are a Bowie worshipper you will love this book. I fyou are not a Bowie fan you will probobly not like it.
