Forget Snorkeling Info.......2003-12-18

I bought this book primarily because I am going to Fiji in two months and wanted info on snorkeling. Boy was I surprised to find only half a page devoted to snorkeling. The rest of the book is a brief description of various dive sites.

The book does have nice pictures and basic information regarding the more popular dive sites in Fiji. But as a snorkeling reference, it is worthless.

For Scuba Divers Only.......2003-08-23

This is an attractive book which the scuba diver will want to order. It maps and describes 74 of Fiji's top dive sites and the color photography is excellent. Despite the title, however, those interested in beach-based snorkeling will find little of use here as almost all of the sites included are accessible by boat only. Even the new Waitabu Marine Park off Taveuni is mentioned only in passing. There's virtually no practical resort or restaurant information, and the first quarter of the book is devoted to brochure-style hype you can read on almost any Fiji website. Critical reviews of dive facilities are strikingly absent, so this book is of no help in selecting a specific scuba operator. Five pages of listings in the back of the book provide basic contact information, but even this is out of date as all Fiji telephone numbers have increased from six to seven digits since the book was published. Most of the email addresses are also wrong, so substitute @connect.com.fj whenever you see @is.com.fj. Nevertheless, when one considers the cost of a scuba tour to the South Pacific and the lack of any alternative Fiji dive guide, all of the above criticisms are mute and serious divers will click this title straight into their shopping carts.

Lacking basic information.......2003-04-07

This book is seemingly a compilation of dive locations frequented by dive resorts, with little independent research or reviews of specific dive outfitters. The book lacks basic information on water temperatures, currents, winds and seasonal influences. The independent traveller primarily interested in snorkeling will also be disappointed in the lack of practical information on the best sections of the main islands for shoreline snorkeling.

a must buy for Fiji.......2002-11-15

Simple no-nonsense guide to diving in Fiji

This is THE current book on Fiji diving (no pun intended...).......2000-12-29

"Ni sa bula vinaka", as it is said in Fiji. As a master diver who has dived since 1956, and has visited many of Fiji's dive sites, I can heartily recommend this book to anyone contemplating diving Fiji. The Mahaney - Witte team- authors, photographers and dive tour guides well-known and respected in the diving community- are knowledgeable and credible. Mind you, NO book can ever catalogue ALL of Fiji's diverse and innumerable dive sites... but this book is well planned, has a very good selection of sites- rated for conditions and experience levels- and information for the would-be Fiji diver. The book has some maps, and a visual feast of photos. In summary- going to Fiji to dive? Be prepared for stiff currents, and a kaleidoscope of colorful fishes and soft corals... and BUY THIS BOOK! Dive well and safely.

Limited and outdated information in a handy size........2000-12-29

As a master diver who has dived over 40 years and has visited many of Fiji's dive sites, I would advise any potential diving visitor to save their money here and buy the newer and much more complete Lonely Planet "Diving and Snorkeling Fiji" by renowned dive guides Casey Mahaney and Astrid Witte (also available on Amanzon). Just be aware- Fiji has so many and varied dive sites visited by day operations and liveaboards NO book can really do justice comprehensively. Nope, no connections with LP or Mahaney, I just want to save other divers the trouble... and if you love diving, you will LOVE Fiji diving!

Mediocre Basic Guide to Fiji Diving.......1999-07-24

This book gives limited information on approximately 20 dive sites in Fiji. The descriptions and photos are adequate, but are relatively brief. The book makes few recommendations, but provides a decent place to start rough planning of an independent dive vacation.

In fact, there is good information for anyone interested in using the Internet. While the whole book is useful, for auditors the most interesting and immediately useful areas include:

A. The Internet Literacy Checklist B. The Digital Literacy Self-Assessment Tool C. Information on how auditors can use the Internet D Internet Search strategies and evaluating search results E. Guidelines and techniques for auditors to evaluate Internet information and data

The Internet Literacy Checklist and Digital Literacy Self-Assessment Tool will help auditors understand their Internet strengths and areas that could use improvement. Audit Directors and Managers can use these to help identify audit staff training needs, as well as help them assess their reliance on auditors' use of Internet information. The effective use of these can help improve the quality and quantity of audit work.

The Internet audit use areas presented in this book are some things that all audit organizations should seriously consider. I fear too many are not making high-quality use of the Internet, resulting in less economical and valuable audits. With the usual limited resources, audit organizations must focus their efforts on key organizational issues in an efficient and effective manner.

Reviewer Background: Mr. Keister has a bachelor and master degrees in Accounting; is a CIA and CPA; and has more than 25 years auditing experience, the last 20 in internal auditing in both large and small organizations, private industry and higher education. He has been using computers since about 1982 and the Internet since 1995, but is not an IT auditor.

If you love vintage Christmas ornaments you will love this book! This is the best book I've seen on the topic. It definitively covers Dresden ornaments, and ornaments made of glass, paper, fabrice, metal, wax, and more. It contains thousands of photographs of mostly pre-war ornaments, a wealth of information and a price guide to help value your collection. Even if you are not an ornament collector, you'll find this book contains collections that will absolutely amaze you. This book will remain in my library forever.

Good Plans - Exactly what I needed.......2000-07-27

This was a very good book. Of course if you are looking for the exact plans measured off the real thing then save yourself some time. If you are looking to make Medieval-looking furniture and are not an Authent-o-crat then you will like this. It has good solid designs and plans for the modern medievel enthusiast. Gets you from point A to point B using tools that we have in the 21st century and is the best I have been able to find.

The plans offer a good starting point for anyone interested in medieval furniture construction, but please don't take the accompanying background seriously, because it is full of inaccuracies and insubstantiated rumors. This said, if you are an enthusiast of medieval furniture, use the projects in this book as a starting point for your own exploration of medieval woodwork and to guide you in your research.

Not very useful to the beginning woodworker.......1998-08-07

There are many problems with this book. The author uses the wrong terminology; he makes mistaken assumptions on the construction of the furniture; his woodworking methodology is very lacking; he dosen't appear to be a seasoned woodworker talking about making medieval furniture, but someone into medieval times writing about the furniture; 8 of the 19 projects are considered mideval on a technicality - beging made 50 or so years before the time frame ended; he says dovetails sould be cut with a hand held saber saw. I can picture people running to the local home center and buying 2x material and digging at it with dull chisels claiming it is medieval because it is crude. There are some good points. The tapestry and candle stand are inspiring, and the couple pages of resources at the back of the book. Anybody serious about medieval furniture should not consider this authoritative.

Useful photos and drawings, but poor scholarship........1998-01-23

Diehl provides some useful measured drawings for those of us who can't make it to the V&A. But nothing is documented (esp. his dubious historical notes, e.g., that seasoning wood was unknown in the Middle Ages, that drawboring was used because they worked with green wood). Modern woodworkers will find it adequate; students of medieval carpentry should steer clear.

Teens as well as their parents will find John Loughry's Saving Our Teen Drivers an excellent life saving resource. Loughry's use of aviation safety skills in relation to the teen driving issue brings a fresh, unique approach beyond the typical driver's education that most teens will experience. It is packed full of information to help keep your teen driver alive. As someone who has worked with teens in the education of safe driving, I would highly recommend this book and consider it a must read for parents as well as teens.

We have all read text books, instructional publications or technical manuals that are just plain boring. This author's style of intermixing stories from his flying experience keeps the book entertaining and makes it easy to relate to real life experiences. This is not the standard dry, preachy, recitation of the same old driving rules. This book should be manditory reading not only for new drivers but anyone with a less than stellar driving record regardless of age.

As parents of five young children, my wife and I have decided to make this book required reading prior to allowing our kids to get their permits. These pilot awareness concepts and training techniques are a perfect application for helping all drivers stay safe while on the road.

Heart wrenching is a microscopic word..........2002-08-21

if I was to describe "Narrow Escapes". In fact, I believe that the pain and sorrow that Holocaust survivor Dr. Samuel P. Oliner faced as he tried to escape from the horrible claws of Adolph Hitler during the Second World War, could never be described. The horrors that he faced are too great for words. The most piercing fact in this book is that the war stories in it are not the stories of a man but the ones of a SMALL CHILD who was forced to become a man much faster than lighting and in the most afflictive situations.

This book is a must read because we all must know the truth about the history of the human race. I strongly believe that every one of us is responsible for what happens today and must keep in mind the future of next generations. Dr. Oliner says, "knowledge of the past may somehow avert similar future...those who remember the past will do all they can to prevent its recurrence."

This book broke my heart way before the Germans came to Zyndranova, the little village near Czecholovakia, when Little Oliner's mother got sick and he was only six-years old. It was at this time that he began to make sense of his world. After his mother's death he exclaims, "My mother is dead. But that is only for a short time, isn't it?" And like if his mother's death was nothing, his father takes him away from his love ones, into another village, in the house of male strangers. It was there, all alone, that he held a job at the age of seven while he went to school. Could you imagine your own child in this situation? Although Oliner doesn't mention in his book, I believe that these agonizing situations were only preparing him for what was to come when the Nazis arrived. These situations were his training ground to face the monster that would take over the land and his people. But the hardships of times and the warmth of his family brought the best out of him. And his fight has not ended yet.

The rest of the story is for you to read in suspense but mostly in deep grief. As I read the book, I often felt glad that the child who was facing all the hardships of the Holocaust was not my sixteen year old son. In fact, I thought about my son the entire book. But the sad part is that although he was not my son, he was the son of another woman. In a war, my child or the child of another woman or man is the same. It brings pain. Being forty years old I have learn that it is a thousand times better to die in the face of injustice that to live in silence before it.
