BOURLON WOOD: Hindenburg Line (Battleground Europe)
Jack Horsfall Manufacturer: Pen and Sword ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0850528186 |
Book Description
In 1917 Bourlon Wood on the Western Front was the scene of fierce back-and-forth fighting between the British and the Germans, with British gains on at least one occasion thrown away by lack of proper follow-up. The Wood formed the left flank of the massive British tank attack at Cambrai, the first of its kind, on November 20, 1917. Bourlon Wood once again came into prominence in September 1918 with the attack of the Canadian Corps against the German defenders, an action that rivaled the Canadian assault on Vimy Ridge.

Something of a Disappointment.......2002-10-23
Cambrai: The Right Hook consists of five historical chapters, beginning with the background to the battle, the First Day of the Battle of Cambrai, the period 21-27 November 1917, the German Counteroffensive and the New Zealand Division attack in October 1918. A sixth chapter covers five different tour routes of the battle area. Note that much historical commentary on the battle is also provided in the tour section, which makes for disjointed reading in attempting to follow specific actions. On the other hand, the photographs are decent and effectively demonstrate the open nature of the Cambrai battlefield and why this area was chosen for a tank assault. The authors provide three succinct orders of battle for the three assaulting British divisions but this information is incomplete in regard to tanks employed in this sector and fails to mention any of the supporting artillery or corps units. No German OB data is ever presented and the authors fail to mention that the British were attacking the German 2nd Army under General von der Marwitz. It might have also been useful to see what type of force ratios the attacking British had in this sector and more detail on the Hindenburg Line defenses. Instead, the authors' preference to include the section on the New Zealand Division action in 1918 appears a flagrant waste of narrative space.
Despite these flaws, Cambrai: the Right Hook does provide some historical value in the areas that the author's have chosen to emphasize. The role of British Brigadier General Elles, commander of the tank corps, is often ignored and his leading the assault in a headquarters tank was remarkable. Interestingly, Elles argued for massing the tanks into a few spearheads but lost the argument to the predominant infantry generals who wanted the tanks spread evenly across the units. This doctrinal argument was to continue for decades after Cambrai. The British tank-infantry team was able to penetrate the first two defensive belts of the Hindenburg Line with light casualties in less than six hours, but the attack started to founder when the lead elements hit the German third belt sited behind the St. Quentin Canal. Essentially, the British attack reached its culminating point due to a failure to adequately plan for a canal-bridging effort (the tanks could not get across the canal's few damaged bridges) and the infantry could not advance without tanks. It is also apparent in these pages that the British Army in late 1917 still retained an aggressive combat spirit. The authors provide details on many of the Victoria Cross winners, like Captain Richard Wain of the tank corps, who, "his tank damaged by a direct hit, his crew killed or wounded and despite being severely wounded himself, dismounted and took a Lewis gun, charged an enemy machine gun nest of five Maxim guns. He captured it and caused the remaining Germans to flee to the rear." Despite efforts of recent trash revisionist historians to blacken the reputation of the British Army, it is clear that the British soldier in November 1917 was still capable of aggressive action on the battlefield. Unfortunately, the German soldier was also still capable of aggressive action and the German counterattack sent the depleted British divisions reeling. Cambrai was an attack conducted on the cheap by a British Army that lacked adequate manpower reserves after Third Ypres and it was this lack of manpower reserves that ultimately undermined the first successful large-scale use of tanks. Thus, Cambrai demonstrates that a new weapon system employed en masse could work, but it still has to function as part of a combined arms team and by November 1917 the British were weak in infantry.
Cambrai: The Right Hook also helps to demonstrate the enduring truthfulness of Napoleon's dictum that in war, the material is to the moral as three is to one. The three assaulting British divisions in III Corps had 36 infantry battalions supported by about 150 tanks, which equates to only about one tank platoon for each infantry battalion. After six hours of fighting at least half the tanks were out of action, reducing their support to a token level. In a material sense, the tanks were few in number but psychologically they acted as a great combat multiplier for the hard-used British infantry and gave them the confidence to assault fortified trench lines. Thus, it was not British tanks that broke the Hindenburg Line but the British combined arms team.

Not very useful or accurate..........2006-03-16
Inaccurate and unreliable source........2001-12-05
Tim Neely--what were you thinking?!.......2001-03-14
Pluses: *listings beyond 1969--though who really cares unless you like to have a checklist for all your albums. They're pretty much all the same price and overpriced at that.
*Frank Zappa listings. Though I don't agree with including this in a jazz book it is kind of cool to see the state of my Zappa collection being addressed.
*Updated prices. Sad to see my mono pressing devalue, but I kind of agree with some of the listings here, though how dime-a-dozen Brubeck albums on Columbia can bring more than early '60's Blue Notes is totally beyond me! Tim, what are you thinking?!
*Label info in the actual listings rather than in the intro--but sparse (see below)
*Cool little checklist boxes to mark off the stock
Minuses:
*WHat I've already mentioned above
*biggest minus: this book is for collectors--what we need more than anything, more than even a "new and improved" price list is "new and improved" label information bordering on the factual. Buyer beware: there is nothing regarding labels except for some Blue Note info and Columbia. I was looking for reliable info on Riverside which is sorely lacking in the '92. I couldn't believe that this vital information was tossed. A real disservice. Is there reliable info in the '94 Umphred? Could someone fax me copies of that so I can paste onto my inside cover. Jeeeezzzz!
*Stupid numerical listing system that separates Mono from Stereo copies. But on the plus side it is divided by labels rather than years. Preferable though I don't really know why myself
I really hope this helps. I should have bought the '94 instead but felt that it didn't address my concerns from the '92. I don't know how hard this can really be if you are steeped in the industry. I do this for s**ts and giggles and know things not in any of the books. A half-assed product, I'm sorry to say. If you are going to do it, do it right or not at all. Where was Neil? He at least has a particular interest in Jazz. WHen you read the forward Tim comes right out and confesses that jazz is not his cup of tea. He therefore has no business getting involved in such a delicate matter as jazz collecting. Sorry Tim, but I suspect I speak for all of those who will purchase this book AFTER have owned an Umphred. Newcomers to the arena will find themselves buried in unwanted reissues in no time.
P.S. Why did my Colpix stereo copy of Jimmy Rushing's "Five Feet of Soul" disappear? Is it even rare? Saw a VG+ copy selling for $25 at a show couple years ago. I already had it.
A pointless and very sloppy edition........2000-09-18
Not much of an update from the Umphred guide.......2000-08-09
First and foremost, most of the prices have been left unchanged; in some cases, they've been downgraded. A quick market pulse-check will tell anyone that you're not going to net $100 for a first press in M- condition of Lee Morgan's "Candy" on blue note, and you're definitely going to get more than $25 for a first-press Sun Ra record on El Saturn! Frequently, the prices for post-'69 records are formulaic; a majority of those records are listed as $6.25/$12.50/$25.00. Thanks for nothing, Neely!
Second, the label determining information is seriously lacking, frequently repeating mistakes made in the Umphred book (i.e., "the 'deep groove' on Blue Note records is about the size of a 50-cent piece.")!
only in the case of Columbia mono/stereo pressings. Argh!
In sum: although this book is complete, its prices are out of touch with reality, and it appears as though the bulk of time it took to get the book to market was spent in arranging the listings, rather than completing the requisite thorough research to successfully achieve its auspicious goal. If you already have Umphred's book, purchase this only if you have a significant number of post-'69 records.

Choosing Naia: A Family's Journey
Mitchell Zuckoff Manufacturer: Beacon Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:

Book Description
A powerful story, based on an award-winning series of articles, about a modern family and Down syndrome Halfway through their first pregnancy, Greg and Tierney Fairchild hear the news all expectant parents dread: their baby isn't perfect. A routine ultrasound reveals that the fetus Tierney carries has a major heart defect. Making matters worse, the nature of the defect leads doctors to suspect it might be a symptom of Down syndrome. With those events as its starting point, Choosing Naia examines the exploding world of prenatal information--and the emotional maelstrom that ensues from an unwanted test result--through the prism of the Fairchild family's experiences. Rapid advances in prenatal testing are enabling doctors to diagnose with great certainty a wide assortment of problems inside the womb. But that's where certainty ends. As they struggle with grief and confusion, would-be parents have only days or weeks to make choices--abortion, adoption, or continuing the pregnancy and keeping the child--whose reverberations are bound to alter the course of many lives. In the Fairchilds' case, those choices are further complicated by race. Having married across racial lines, Greg and Tierney can imagine the discrimination felt by the disabled. Ultimately, that understanding informs their decision about whether and how to parent a disabled child. Once the choice is made, they face a difficult delivery, where Tierney's vigilance literally saves her baby's life, and high-risk open-heart surgery before the baby they name Naia can celebrate her first birthday. After clearing those hurdles, the Fairchilds face new barriers they must tear down on behalf of their beloved child for all the days of their lives. Mitchell Zuckoff won the 2000 Distinguished Writing Award from the American Society of Newspaper Editors for his series "Choosing Naia," which also was honored by the National Down Syndrome Congress and the American Association on Mental Retardation.Customer Reviews:

A couple must make a difficult choice........2003-01-19
Investigative reporter Mitchell Zuckoff spent hundreds of hours with Tierney and Greg, and the result is "Choosing Naia," a book that began as a series of articles in the Boston Globe. This book is not only the story of a couple's arduous journey, but it is also an eye-opening look at the history of Down syndrome and a good explanation for the layman of what such a diagnosis means to a child and his parents.
Zuckoff's conversational style makes "Choosing Naia" flow smoothly. Throughout the book, the author provides valuable information on such topics as genetic testing and counseling, early intervention for children with Down syndrome, and the importance of networking in order to get the most valuable information and assistance for your child. Another factor that makes "Choosing Naia" stand out is its unflinching honesty. It is a tribute to the Fairchilds that they allowed their doubts, fears and uncertainties to be recorded for posterity. They come across as vulnerable, yet strong and determined, real people who have decided to meet a difficult challenge.
I highly recommend this touching and informative book. "Choosing Naia" reminds us that in an age of amazing technology and prenatal testing, we are privy to information that may make our lives more complicated than ever before.
The Other Choice in pro-choice.......2002-12-27
In these situations, many Americans, including those who declare themselves to be pro-choice, don't see a pregnancy as a "choice": the woman/couple should abort a child with a condition such as Down syndrome or spinal bifida.
Mitchell Zuckoff's tale is one of a couple who discover that their long-awaited child not only has a hole in her tiny heart, but also has Down syndrome. Zuckoff takes us through Greg and Tierney Fairchild's weeks of agony as they explore the decision to continue Tierney's pregnancy and the months following their choice.
Family members urge them to consider both termination and continuance, while doctors and counselors strive to remain neutral. Meanwhile, Greg and Tierney wrestle with the questions that would inform our own opinions: would they be able to have other children, knowing that their first-born may require a great deal of time, money, and energy? Were they willing to fight discrimination and ignorance for their child's life?
As the book's title makes clear, the couple chooses to continue the pregnancy and take the future as it comes. Unfortunately, it comes with much more heartache. Zuckoff recounts the early health difficulties that plagued baby Naia's life, as well as her parents's introductions to the social challenges she will face.
I applaud Zuckoff's work on this book. While the reader is aware that none of the characters are telling the story, the journalist also does not appear in the tale. He effectively minimizes the space he occupies on the edges of the page.
Zuckoff strives to tell a complete story in every chapter. After opening with a scene from the family, he explores background information about prenatal testing, the history of mental retardation in the US, and the biology of Down syndrome. The reader is exposed to much of the same information the Fairchilds sought out during the decision-making period. While the author does not become over-technical, at times he fails to make a smooth transition between the Fairchilds and the other information.
What Zuckoff does not tackle is the Fairchilds's choice in the abstract. For those of us who call ourselves pro-choice, what does it mean when a woman/couple makes the "wrong" choice? Are we willing to support women/couples who choose to have a child with a debilitating condition, possibly suffering from profound mental retardation?
However, this is a small criticism. If his focus was on one particular couple, then these wider issues have limited value in the narrative. Greg and Tierney face this issue on a small scale when family members gently urge her to consider termination.
The tale is one of heartbreak, triumph, resilience, and overwhelming love. For those who enjoy it, I recommend both Martha Beck's "Expecting Adam" (which covers the same ground with a more mystical spin) and Rayna Rapp's "Testing Women, Testing the Fetus" (which covers the ethical and social issues of amniocentesis).

Notes of a Moscow Pianist
Dmitry Paperno Manufacturer: Amadeus Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1574670344 |
Amazon.com
Pianist Dmitry Paperno--born in Kiev, in what is now Ukraine, in 1929--wrote this memoir in order to tell the world about his teacher at the Moscow Conservatory, the great Alexander Borisovich Goldenweiser. And he succeeds, memorably and movingly. He also tells us about life in the Soviet Union as a boy during World War II, as a student in Stalin's terrors, and as a young soloist when even being permitted to play concert tours abroad was no Shield against overcrowding and official suspicions at home. He gives his readers an inkling of life as an emigrant, and the hardships of a very different kind he and his wife and daughter faced when they came to the United States in 1976. Among the most valuable aspects are his discussions on the nature of being a musician, and what that involves in terms of work, commitment and sheer talent. First published in Russian, Paperno's book now appears in a new English edition that retains its Russian flavor. An epilogue brings events up to The present; happily, he seems to have adjusted to life in the West, although His concert career has been brought to an end by physical problems with His hands. This is a book with a great deal to offer anyone with an interest in classical music or life in the Soviet Union. As useful adjuncts to the book, it should be noted that Paperno has Several compact discs in print on the Cedille label. Some of his finest recordings from his days as a Soviet Artist have just been remastered and rereleased to accompany the publication of this book. Called Recordings of a Moscow Pianist, it includes fine renditions of Liszt, Chopin and Brahms, and helps to illustrate some of his points about making music. In fact, one could wish the publisher had included a copy of the disc with the book. --Sarah Bryan MillerBook Description
The rich musical life of Moscow is displayed in these memoirs where formidable Russian pianists take the world by storm, revealing by their virtuosity and musicianship the continuation of a great pianistic tradition. Dmitry Paperno was a witness to a golden age of the piano, when the celebrated schools of Moscow produced a stream of great pianists - Gilels, Richter, Ashkenazy - and he tells his, and their, stories here.
