Allows you to get off the beaten track - Great Guide.......2000-06-20

The third book in a series (Northern England & Scotland & Southern England the other two) that allows you to get off the beaten track to see the countryside and quaint remote areas of England.

Laid out in sixteen chapters, with each chapter a separate day itinerary,makes this an easy-to-use book for those who want to avoid the tour buses and tourist traps. The Best of Britain's Countryside helps you find good food and lodging, while giving the reader tidbits on custom. Language and architecture.

Good maps are generous in this book, however to make The Best of Britain's Countryside an excellent book the weak b&w photos need to be replaced, as well as a better, more readable page layout that uses bullets and/or boxes that highlight the explanation of a various places would really help.

If you want to see another side, especially the countryside of England and you like to venture out on your own I have not found a better guide book to recommend than this.

Excellent Resource for Walking in Britain.......2000-06-14

I own all three book covering England - they are an excellent resource. I have many books on this topic but these are really the best. I'm very disappointed they are out of print - would love an updated version. The authors really do provide reliable recommendations for the best places/sites/hikes. Wish they would write about other countries - Italy, France and Switzerland.

Fabulous book--can't believe it's out of print.......1998-08-24

Thanksgiving time several years ago, my husband, two friends, our 12-month old son and I used this book to guide us on a walking trip in Northern England. We started in the Harrogate area, had a fabulous time on the walks. B&B recommendations were first rate. Bill and Gwen should update the book, if that's the impediment to keeping it in print!

This book is a must-have for genealogical research for finding and understanding a woman's role in the family role, such as mother, wife, sister, head of household. A very good addition to your library of family history.

Disappointing -- more facts, less speculation needed.......2002-11-11

While the first few chapters of this book are moderately helpful, much of the book seemed to be devoted to "imagining" what life would be like for female ancestors. While this might prove to be an entertaining exercise, it is not consistent with good genealogical research.

Insightful and in-depth research approaches about women.......2002-09-07

Well-written, well-organized and enjoyable to read, this outstanding genealogical research tool provides an excellent in-depth, insightful, integrated approach to genealogical research, particularly focused on researching our female family members. It contains a good explanation of means of tracing women when their surnames have changed, and very extensive bibliographies that are exhaustively research sources on women's property rights, childbearing and women's health care.
It sets out a well-explained technique of developing, writing and preserving one's family story as an organized historical narrative, with all the information one has obtained, so that the information paints a family's portrait(s), gives meaning to facts, organizes the source materials logically, and helps to tell the family who they are, why they are the way they are, and where they came from so that the family's history is preserved. This aspect of the book provides a much needed explanation to "weekend" genealogists on how to handle and develop their research results to make sense of them and to preserve the meaning of them.

This is a thoroughly analyzed and helpful book. I have given copies of this book to several people as it responds to research needs at several levels: genealogy, women's rights and issues (property, health, probate/will), family history interests, research skills, even personal journaling and self-discovery through family discovery.
Sharon DeBartolo Carmack has an outstanding ability to teach, and I hope she will continue to expand on her collection of genealogy research books.

Far from this author's best work.......2002-07-23

Despite the fact that half of everyone's ancestors are women, they traditionally have received short shrift from genealogists. Married women frequently appear on family group sheets as "Elizabeth Blank," teenage daughters are lost track of between censuses if their new husbands' names are unknown, and even the most dedicated family man was apt to leave everything in his will simply to "my wife." (Those of Acadian or Quaker descent are fortunate that religious records usually provide a wife?s maiden name.) Carmack is a well-known author and lecturer and one opens this book with high hopes that she will describe new techniques that will enable one to knock down some of those brick walls. Unfortunately, even the moderately experienced researcher is likely to be disappointed. While the first four chapters are filled with good advice on valuable resources, nearly all of them are equally applicable to researching both men and women: passenger lists, city directories, probate records, interviewing aging relatives, etc. Chapter Five is devoted to writing about women in a family history, and Chapter Six is a brief case study of one of the author's own female ancestors -- but again, the methods described would work just as well for a great-great-grandfather as for his wife. (What does one do to identify a wife who dies before the 1850 census, leaving a dirt-farmer husband unable to read or write, who remarries and leaves his worldly goods to his second wife? I have more than one like that!) Carmack is a specialist in social and ethnic history, which can be very useful in fleshing out one's family research -- but in that case, the title is a bit misleading. She provides full citations for all of her many examples, of course, as well as a 24-page *selected* bibliography -- which may be the most useful part of the book.

Only Four Stars?.......2002-07-03

I believe this book, like many others, fails to adequetly cover all aspect of & types of searches most people are trying to solve. Eventho the auther covered some of the very basic Of places a person may look, She failed to explain how & where or the tecniques that one would to trace & find a female ancester gone many years.It lacks a show of true knowelege & expertise. If i were grading this as a high school project I would grade it as a D for Content, C for effort & overall would have been returned as I for Incomplete.The dealer was very fast & more than met m expectatitions. Th book was as advertised & in excellent condition. Dealer gets Five Stars !Author gets One Star !! And an I for Incomplete works !!!

This book is sure to become a classic among all books on the subject. The instructions are clear and accurate - easy enough for even a first-time quiltmaker to follow. The many color pictures throughout the book will inspire you to want to make a quilt in every single pattern!

You mean I can't give this 10 stars!.......2000-06-27

This book is INCREDIBLE! The projects are so beautiful, and they are really easy. But you would never know just by looking at them. So you can really impress people when you make these! I am still a beginner, and this should have been my first book. I kept buying book after book to try to figure out how to do the binding on my quilt. None of them explained it very well. But this one did! It also gave great tips for machine quilting and piecing. You do have to own a sewing machine to use this book or you will never be able to do all the strip piecing. I'm just really surprised that I found a book that had so many quilts I actually wanted to make. I like these because they are very symmetrical and coordinated. I don't really care for quilts that are fancy designs and every block is different patterns. I like these, made up of strips and squares to make complicated-looking but easy to make quilts. And they are all so differnet! How she came up with all these combinations, I don't know! You will not be able to put this book down! I think it is a very worthwhile purchase. I also like the way she wrote it. I have a couple of quilt books where the author may make nice quilts, but can't write a book at all. So this one was a great addition to my library.

The home as part of material culture is the very place where the intricate relations between architecture, gender and domesticity become visible. This book investigates the multi-layered themes evoked by the interconnections between these terms. The contributions to this book address the gendered conceptions and the use of built spaces, the role of women as active agents of spatial production, and the mutual inscriptions of the materiality of architectural space and gendered subjectivities.

The focus of inquiry is modern architecture, also including the celebrated architecture of the Modern movement as its more common and widely spread derivatives that became the dominant mode of building in the twentieth century. The articles in the introductory section provide an overview of the existing discourse on modernity, domesticity and gender. The following three sections consist of essays on specific spatial scenarios from a broad range of geographical locations in the West, whereby the complicated relationship between gender and domestic space are revealed in architectural discourse and practice. The topics range from well-known architects and architectural examples such as Adolf Loos and the Maison de Verre to relatively unknown cases such as the polykatoikia apartments in Greece. In all cases, the authors' emphasis remains on how the concept of domesticity is produced by the gendered subjectivity of builders and users of domestic spaces and by architectural discourse.

The essays brought together in this book are based upon new interdisciplinary research which enriches architectural history with sociological, anthropological, philosophical and psychoanalytical approaches. Despite the Modern movement's prominent emphasis on housing, the point is often made that modern art and architecture were about the suppression rather than the glorification of domesticity. This book contends that the modern era marks the rise of a new sense of domesticity that developed simultaneously with re-definitions ofgender roles and which led to unprecedented articulations of sexuality with domestic space.
