Excellent guide to seeing France from behind the wheel........2006-02-10
Excellent guide to seeing France with a Renault car or a moped. You will enjoy some great driving tours and routes through France. This review is about the 6th edition, 2005
Frommers has recently come out with more "Best-Loved Driving Tours" series ... guides that are not very inexpensive, but are very well researched and quite comprehensive. One will have plenty of driving tours and routes to chose from, whether you like arts and museums, scenic roads and breathtaking views, urban towns and shopping, or just want to experience a regione's culture and life.
Unlike the other Frommer guides that are fatter and heavier, this little book gives you not too many specifics on lodging or eating. It is geared strictly for the person behind the wheel and her or his passengers.
I have had a great experience using this guide and will recommend it to anyone who can afford it. Also, you might want to check to see if your library carries it and check it out for the duration of your visit abroad.
When I backpacked 4 months through Europe I had a copy of the Lonely Planet for Europe (a thick and heavy book) because it covered more cities and esoteric towns, a ripped chapters of all the international youth hostals Europe of the countries I visited, and as primary guide for nominal cities and capitals I used Frommers (ripped the book and kept only chapters of countries planning to visit - so I can keep the weight down).

Great book that has France broken down by areas that one can easily tour in short 3-5 day trips. Lists major sites to see along suggested routes. Gives clear directions and small, well detailed maps. Highlights walks, special sites, and recommendations for children. No wineries, hotels, or restaurants.

Book Description
Meets the rising demand for information about collecting, appraising, buying and selling cameos.
The only book of its kind, Cameos Old & New, 2nd Edition provides a comprehensive reference for anyone interested in cameos, including how to:
Build and care for a cameo collection; develop an eye for quality and an appreciation for cameos as "art"; detect genuine cameos from among synthetics and imitations; "circa date" cameos to differentiate old cameos from new; distinguish ultrasonically-produced cameos from hand-carved pieces; avoid the major pitfall--the purchase of mediocre pieces, fakes, and forgeries; and much, much more.
Customer Reviews:
Not bad.......2007-07-15
I liked the book. It could of had alot more information in it because there was a few things that I did not get answered...like I had hoped. But I guess you can't expect one book to give you all the information that a person seeks.
Everything you always wanted to know about cameos........2005-07-01
If you love cameos and collect them this is a wonderful little book for you. Tells you the history, the types, the reasons for certain styles, how to tell the age, how to tell the value, and all the necessary terminology for discussing them. Good illustrations are also a plus.
More than just your grandmother's brooch.......2004-08-15
When most people think of cameos, they think of the standard woman's profile carved from shell and mounted as a brooch or necklace. But the art of the cameo encompasses far more than that. Historically, it dates back to the ancient world, and over the centuries many materials have been used in making these works of art. Although female heads are probably the most common subject, mythological figures, animals, portraits of individuals, and many other things have found their way onto cameos. The quality can range all the way from cheap mass-produced modern items to fine hand-crafted pieces worthy of any museum.
Anna Miller's "Cameos" is a wonderful introduction to cameos. She covers the history of the form, the subjects normally found and what each one looks like--very useful in an age where few people know their mythology. She describes the different materials that have been used in making cameos--including lava from Mt. Vesuvius, shell, agate, onyx, plastic, and glass. There's an extensive section on how cameos are made and on the people who made (and make) them. One particularly useful discussion describes the differences between traditional hand-carved works and those made by modern ultrasonic machines (vital for any modern buyer). The author also gives information on how to evaluate quality and condition and on market value. The book is illustrated throughout with black and white pictures, and there is an extensive color section in the middle. One of the best things about this book is that the author is able to convey her appreciation of the art of cameos to the reader. "Cameos" is an essential reference for anyone who wants to acquire a knowledge and understanding of this art. Highly recommended.
Review by a Cameo carver........2003-12-12
I am one of the small number of portrait cameo carvers on gemstone.
I found this book to be excellent. There is a wealth of detail on all aspects of cameos. There are also good illustrations. There is valuable info for collectors on identifying and valuing Cameos.
Information on how to distinguish Ultrasonic Cameos from the more valuable hand-carved cameos is given.
You will gain a lot of knowledge on how Cameos are made and valued from reading this title.
Great for the beginner.......2003-05-31
This book is extremely useful for anyone new to cameo collecting. There is an extensive history of the cameo, information on famous cameo artists, as well as the different materials used for cameos. It contains a small section on how to date cameos, and how to spot fakes. Overall, a great book for the beginner.
Book Description
From the simple to the sophisticated, this third volume of the successful Period Ship Handbook series looks at the making of ten model sailing ship projects. For modelers who are just beginning the transition from kits to scratch building or the highly skilled craftsman, the chapters provide detailed instructions on the various phases of exhibition-standard construction. Projects range in size from the HMS Bounty's Jolly Boat to the Bounty itself. Other ships in this volume include the great seventeenth-century Spanish warship San Felipe and the early twentieth-century American whaling ship Viola, as well as the Bellona, Unicorn, Portsmouth, See Ewer Elbe, Baltimore, and a section on the Victory. For those unsure of the sometimes daunting details of the craft, the author provides information on rigging terminology, modeling techniques, and step-by-step instructions in a fully illustrated large-format layout designed to bridge any knowledge gaps and encourage participation in this fascinating hobby.
Customer Reviews:
The Period Ship Series.......2003-09-12
When starting to build the San Felipe, I cast around for any books or manuals that included that ship. I found the Period Ship Handbook-3 and was delighted. I purchased it and several other lesser handbooks that I thought might be handy. The Period Ship book was of no particular value in the process of building the model. The book is very visual and has some great pictures, but they essentially provided me with an image of what my ship would look like tomorrow! The miscellaneous handbooks at much lower cost were far more valuable. As nice as the series looks, I honestly believe that they are more like coffee table books than working manuals.
Wooden model ship kits built straight from the box........2002-04-15
This book should have been entitled "Wooden model ship kits built straight from the box (imagination not included)."
This is Julier's third installment of his "Period Ship Handbooks." These "handbooks" do not deal with the historic "period" ships, nor are they general handbooks for model ship builders. Rather, they are simply photo-diaries of how he built particular commercially available wooden model ship kits.
This time we get to watch over his shoulder as he constructs nine kits, straight out-of-the-box, with little research or imagination. The kits covered are Corel's 74-gun "H.M.S. Bellona," the 24-gun frigate "H.M.S. Unicorn" of unstated manufacture, Mamoli's brig "Portsmouth," Constructo's Baltic coasting vessel "Elbe," Panart's 104-gun Spanish "San Felipe," Artesania Latina's "H.M.S. Bounty's" jolly boat, Corel's "H.M.S. Victory" cross section, Model Shipway's "Pride of Baltimore II," and Euro Model's "Bounty." The construction of each subject is covered by an average of 16 pages and 23 large, nicely reproduced b/w photographs, and 1 small color photo of the completed model.
Julier constructs his models with only the parts and instructions in the kit box, a few hand tools, and very little initiative. Decent kits (e.g. "Bellona," "Pride of Baltimore") come out pretty well. The construction of other kits is pure fiction. Particularly galling are the head construction of the "Portsmouth," "Unicorn," and "San Felipe," and the planking job on the "San Felipe" and "Bounty." Coppered hulls are simulated with painted tiles. Brass work is left bright. With a little more effort (and research) much better models can be produced from these kits. There are some horrendous editing failures here, too. How can a full 22 page chapter on the construction of the "Unicorn" fail to mention the kit manufacturer?
It's interesting that Julier finishes his book with a chapter on scratch-building the whaler "Viola." This shows some initiative and gumption, going from plans and raw materials to a finished product. This chapter provides a reasonable transition from the mind-numbing sameness of a mass-produced kit to the unique product of the craftsmanship of the self-reliant scratch- builder. It also demonstrates that Julier has a long way to go in the craft of model ship building.
If you've never built a wooden model ship before, and perhaps received for Christmas a ship kit of European manufacture (with their abysmal multilingual instructions), and can't make heads nor tails of what to do, these large format soft cover books are for you. If, on the other hand, you've built a model previously, have some confidence in your craftsmanship, or are building a kit with a decent set of instructions (e.g. a Model Shipways kit), don't waste your money.
A Guide For Ship Modellers Making Commercial Kits.......2000-02-09
The aim of this book is to show the average modeler how to build a high class model from a commercial kit.
It is well written in clear and concise language, and is to be highly recommended if you intend making any of the kits detailed below. Alternatively, if you are looking for a kit to make, and want to browse and get an idea or feel for the model, then again consider getting a copy.
The author starts the book off with three short chapters. The first is a sensible discussion on the basic tools required, the second provides advice on choosing a kit, while the third gives some hints on making a start. A final chapter is also included that provides a summary of useful techniques - many of which will prove invaluable, especially to the beginner.
The main body of the book consists of Chapters each dealing with a specific kit. They are well illustrated with numerous photos and line drawings, and cover the various stages of construction in full detail. Additionally, numerous hints and tips are provided, as well as advice in relation to the trickier operations.
All of this is practical in nature, as the author has built each kit - the photos illustrate the processes involved, as well specific details of the vessels. The author also provides numerous suggestions, as well as mentioning any specific pitfalls that builders may face.
Finally, because of the nature of the book, readers may want to know what manufacturer's kits are covered in the book. So, the ships covered are the Euro Model First Rate Royal William; Billing's Thames Barge Will Everard and their Faeroes Yawl FD10; Corel's Frigate Berlin; Panart's Square Sterned Whaleboat; Amati's New Bedford Whaleboat; and lastly all by Artesania Latina - the American Raider Hannah, the French Goelette La Toulonnaise, the Man-of-War San Juan Nepomuceno, the U.S.S. Constitution, and the Whaling Ship Charles W Morgan.

Book Description
It seemed like just plain bad luck. On September 11, 2001, Jeremy Glick boarded United Flight 93 only because a fire at Newark Airport had prevented him from flying out the day before. That morning, he called his wife, Lyz, to tell her the plane had been hijacked and that he and a group of others were going to storm the cockpit, an effort that doomed Glick and his fellow passengers yet doubtless saved lives on the ground and instantly became known worldwide as a heroic moment of resistance. But Lyz wanted the couple's daughter, Emmy, only three months old when the plane crashed, to learn much more of her father's story than just the ending. Your Father's Voice narrates Lyz's struggle to come to grips with her husband's death in a series of letters from Lyz to Emmy that give a wrenching but clear-eyed account of Lyz's first years without Jeremy. The letters also portray the rebellious but charismatic star athlete who became Lyz's high school sweetheart, a national collegiate judo champion, and finally her husband. We see Lyz's medical ordeal as she tries to bring Emmy into the world, Jeremy's tender nurturing of the premature baby, and the agony of his final telephone call from the ill-fated plane.
But it is during the first frantic months after the terrorist attack---as she fends off the media and fights to get the truth about what happened on Flight 93---that Lyz realizes that she and Jeremy are still deeply connected, that his love for her and Emmy endures and teaches. Soon Lyz can write to Emmy that she believes it was destiny, not luck, that put a world-class martial artist like Jeremy on an airplane with other men and women who were also determined to fight back.
Through it all, Lyz pragmatically details the challenges of a single parent raising a daughter in the aftermath of horrific tragedy, and urges Emmy to listen for what Lyz can still hear when the wind is right: her father's voice.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful Book.......2007-09-08
This is a Wonderful Book.It has background of Lyz Glick and Her Late Husband Jeremy Meeting, falling in Love,Colledge,Marriage, the baby Emmy and the Hijacking leading to Jeremy's death.I highly recommend this book.
Only Flight 93 memoir worth reading.......2007-03-15
Glick's book is the only one that seems to be about an interesting human being. Beamer and Burnett are too full of Christian fundamentalist nuttiness and the Advocate guy who wrote the Bingham book is too obsessed by the fact that Bingam was a homosexual. Jeremy Glick seems to have been a much more real person, not a cardboard Christian warrior for God or a posterboy for the gay rights movement.
Very Heartwrenching and Inspiring.......2005-11-02
I was very anxious to read this book since I read an article on a Reader's Digest magazine about a year ago and so I requested my local library to buy it. I read it in a week, I am pretty sure I could've read it in two days if it wasn't because I have a lot of homework. All I can say is that I loved "Your Father's Voice". It is very well-written and moving.
Lyz Glick carefully tells the story of her life with Jeremy and her life once Jeremy was gone. She walks us through every memory she kept. She shares with us the weakest moments of her life after her husband's death, but she also states the importance of her and Jeremy's daughter in her life.
I have to applaud Liz Glick for managing to tackle such an enourmously emotional and personal subject with such grace. This book put thoughts in my head of what it would be like if I had to face the same reality she encountered, and I have to confess it brought me to tears often. What happened to her and to anyone whose loved ones were killed that horrible day is something you don't wish to anyone. Like I said I can't imagine enduring the things she went through.
I was totally blown away by this book. I undoubtedly recommend it. It's the kind of book you should have on your coffee table. You will see it is very hard to put it down.

This is an amazing book..........2005-08-29
This book was so beautifully and eloquently written. I read it over several days, it is almost impossible to put down. This book is a major tear jerker, though. It has been a long time since I have literally sobbed while reading a book. You actually feel sad when it is over, like you just want to read it again. It was heartbreaking to see what an amazing father he was to his baby daughter, and that he had just 12 weeks with her. I also loved, loved the writing style of Lyz Glick. The way that she described things, people, and events made you feel like you were right there. Well done!!!!
Hearbreaking, but brought closure for this reader.......2005-01-18
Lyz Glick, a self-described "single-married person," chose to write a series of letters to her daughter, Emerson, about Jeremy Glick: husband, father, and fighter-a hero who died on September 11, 2001, as one of the passengers on Flight 93.
Brutally honest, Lyz Glick and writer, Dan Zegart, create more than a book filled with letters to the Glick's daughter, Emerson, or "Emmy." Emmy, and readers around the world, will come to know a man who is both common and exceptional. Glimpses into the past, told by friends, family and his wife, show Glick's growth from precocious child to courageous man.
Emmy was not quite three-months old when her father and other passengers of Flight 93 became icons of courage in modern American history.
As Emmy learns about her father's past, from childhood to adulthood, readers also come to know Jeremy Glick, his wife, his extended family and friends.
Poignant, funny, wry, and sad, Your Father's Voice, is an intimate portrait of a special man whose past prepared him for the events on 9/11, an infamous day carved forever into American history.
Your Father's Voice is not a book to enjoy, but rather one to absorb.
This is a story of how the common man can rise with honor and sacrifice self to fight against evil. Jeremy Glick, in these letters to his daughter, is such a man-a man who became one of God's warriors.
Lyz Glick and Zegart, through Your Father's Voice, allows those of us who watched helplessly as events played out on 9/11 to believe in heroes and hold them close in our hearts.
Laced with humor, sadness, anger, curiosity and more, this book of letters is also an account of the process Mrs. Glick was forced to partake in as a surviving widow, or "single-married person," as she calls herself.
Though the details are sometimes gruesome, at the same time, they are important to not only Lyz Glick, but to readers as well. Because of her tenacity, the world can also take a step forward toward healing by putting to rest questions about that ugly day.
Your Father's Voice is not a sugarcoated account of Jeremy Glick's life. We meet Glick as he was-an ordinary man made extraordinary through his choices in life, and in death.

this book got me into taxi driving.......2004-02-27
This is a true view behind the yellow curtain of the taxi staging lot at any major airport in the states. And how owners and drivers interact.
Very good book!.......2000-11-22
I've read this book in Russian (Russian version is called "Yellow Kings"), and now eager to read it in English. Book is very interesting and author's style is perfect. And, more important - book describes real life, with it humorous and sad moments. I'm Russian and when I first went to NYC - I saw the city the same "way" as the author did...
