This book is light and superficial. Although I found the writing entertaining, the help I was looking for is missing from this book.

I bought 6 books on purchasing a business via Amazon. This is the only one that is not worth looking at. While Mr. Yegge might be a nice fellow, he desperately needs an editor. His opinions are overbearing and presented in such a confusing manner as to undermine any worth at all.

To add insult to injury, Mr. Yeggie keeps stating that it is necessary to purchase his other book if you want to value a company. It would have been easy to include it here -- the other five books I read did just that.

I don't know that I could write any better -- but there are a lot of authors out there who can.

This book is about business, not the internet. This book offers eleven strategies for survival and profit in the era of online businesses. It is written by businesspeople for businesspeople.

The realm of e-commerce provides all companies with an environment where the survival of the fittest is the golden rule. The authors see the internet as providing challenges to all businesses, regardless of how well established or large these businesses may be.

This book works to explain these eleven strategies:

1. Use the internet as the World's Most Sophisticated Telephone.

Old hat with a few new frills.......2000-03-18

What a disappointment! I could not beleive that this was actually written in 1999. Unless you have been asleep for a couple of years most of the stuff in this tape would be familiar.

The tape starts with a few bits of information such as the quote from Fortune: "On the web you are either fast, or last." And then goes on to talk about channel conflict stating that this is the most widely reported problem that businesses face. Well neither the author nor these businesspeople have read customers.com because Patricia Seybold has a solution (in fact so does Judson in strategy 10).

I did not like his telephone analogy for the web. Trouble always comes when something new is described using nice comfortable familiar concepts. His strategies are on the whole disappointingly stale: speed, flexibility, efficiency, personal service and paranoia. Judson seems to borrow his ideas from everyone (including Grove and Gates).

However, if you have been asleep for the last two years, you are panicking because you are about to be disintermediated and you want a primer in e-commerce, this is probably for you.

Why three stars? Well I did not throw it out the car and it did remind me of everything I had heard before.

I have recommended, and bought, this book for many of my friends. It has very practical and useful ideas of how to leverage the Internet to produce incremental sales and reduce operational costs. Must read if you have, or don't have, an Internet business strategy.

Filled with simple, easy-to-grasp advice, backed up with many real-world examples.

Some readers will be disappointed in this book because it is not a how-to guide to making a website or marketing products on the Net. But it IS a comprehensive strategy guide for managers who want to see if (and how) the Internet can help their business. This book was an invaluable help to me during my own research.

I was disappointed in this book. These are not quilts, but wall hangings, so to me the title is misleading. I also thought the book was too theme oriented with regard to the quilted wall hangings. I inherited alot of handkerchiefs and wanted to make a large quilt.

Hankys galore!.......2004-03-12

This is a great book for quilting and especially for a type of quilting that is not as popular as piecing and applique. I saw the author, Cindy Brick, on HGTV's Simply Quilts! with the ever sparkling Alex Anderson. Cindy showed how to make the cutest crazy hanky quilt so I just had to try it, even though I had recorded the show. I love to buy books on whatever hobby I have (knitting, crochetting, and quilting), and just good-old fiction. This is a great book. I'm sorry to say that I don't have any ancestors that had or saved handerchiefs, but had the thought to look on e-Bay! What do you know?!? There are pages and pages of handkerchiefs for sale of all types and all price ranges, mostly reasonable. This made this book invaluable to me. Hope that the previous reviewer sees this and therefore can get herself more handkerchiefs. There are plenty for all and Cindy Brick probably has some ideas on finding them also. But as she says on the show, "Just don't cut up the valuable historical ones." Great book and author.

I received this as a gift and would probably not have purchased it on my own (only because I don't have any hankies). The book had a lot of colored pictures and all of the quilts had themes which were based on what was embroidered on the hankies. It is a good book to have for some who has a lot of hankies and would like to turn them into wall hangings to remember beloved ones. Overall it is well written and makes a nice addition to my library.

I was so excited to receive my copy last Saturday, that I sat out on the deck and read it cover to cover. My interest in antique quilts always has me wondering, "Why did the quiltmaker do it that way?" This book tells the stories behind the quilt and where the inspiration began. The detailed instructions for each quilt are excellent. The quotes and verses as filler throughout the book are a nice added touch. The choice for the books cover, in itself invites you to explore the pages inside!! I am, however, partial to "Cardinals in Friendship Pines" on page 64-67. A thank you to all my friends and relatives who made blocks, of one inch squares, to complete the quilt I always wanted to make.

The place to start........2000-09-04

This is a fine introduction to the Greenes and their accomplishments. Particular attention is paid (quite rightly) to the 'ultimate bungalows,' the large houses they built between 1907 and 1909 for which they pulled out all the stops. If you fall under the Greene & Greene spell, though, you will eventually want large color photographs, which means you will have to buy more books. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Fascinating account (despite the leftist agenda).......2004-01-05

Weisman is a good writer, with an amazing true story to tell. A journalist traveling to the Ukraine to investigate the Chernobyl disaster (an amazing story in its own right), he decides to visit his ancestral town of Elizavetgrad (Yelisavethgrad). This takes him on an unexpected odyssey of self-discovery and family history.

His insights into Jewish life (in Chicago and Russia) are especially engaging. Some readers will tire of his sometimes relentless left-wing agenda, but I was glad I didn't let that distract from the really fine cultural portrait he has composed.

ocassions. His vinettes of imprtant
history(the Russian civil war,the Chicago
convention,the Unamerican Committee) were
incredible. I take issue with the extent
of his family history which was confusing
and tiring.

How deeply moved my wife and I have been by this momentous, beautiful book, which both of us have found to be truly unforgettable. Echo in the blood, indeed. Weisman has found a way to widen a story that is essentially "personal" and familial by ramifying that story in multiple dimensions -- geo-politically, ecologically, historically and racially (the euphemism is "culturally," but this is a book that is unabashedly concerned with the complex meanings of racial inheritance). Most staggering to me are the book's accounts of visiting the weirdly transformed Ukrainian landscape around Chernobyl, the passages that combine the author's father's letters from combat in World-War-Two-era Europe with descriptions of the ongoing lives of relatives at home in Minnesota, and the chapters detailing (with intricate, agonizing subtlety) the deaths of his parents, one then the other. My wife's strongest response was a whole-body recognition of a certain truth, in which the book immerses its reader: As a people, as a species, we are making war on each other and on the living earth. Every one of us carries the burden and the damage of that war into our future. This is extraordinary writing, extraordinarily difficult to make sing, and Alan Weisman has brought it to song.

I am a descendent of the family that Mr Weisman writes about. How ironic, that I discovered this book through a distant relative who knew I was looking for information on my great grandparents, on my mother's side. I am named for Bess Goldman, a relative of Mr. Weisman. I asked hundreds of questions about my family while my grandparents were alive, and most were stonewalled. After resigning myself to never knowing the truth, I read this book, and many mysteries are finally solved. I am now 56 and for most of my life the story of my family was concealed from me, I never knew why. In those days, living in denial saved you from the truth. I must be a distant cousin to Mr. Weisman, I had many relatives my grandparents would never tell me about, I never knew why they fled the Ukraine. this book has provided answers to lingering questions, echos, so to speak. I will be sending each my two children this book and will share it with remaining family members. Mr. Weisman's research is inspiring. I admire his tenacity in delving into the past with such enthusiasm. This book could be anybody's family, it is a microcosm of our journey from elsewhere to America. Pamela Price Lechtman

An amazing, page-turning story about real ideas.......1999-12-01

This book goes far beyond conventional memoir. The author's story shows how our world today is tangled with the past, and that we drag the past along with us, whether we know it or not. Through vivid personal stories, the writer shows how events as disparate as the Jewish pogroms in Russia, the McCarthy blacklist, and the current environmental crisis are all connected. He reminds us that we all share the inherited pain of immigration. A beautifully written, sad and funny, important book.
