Classic works on mid-century jewelry.......2005-10-14

As a lifelong collector of mid-century plastic jewelry, I have found the literature on the subject to be amaturish and rather incomplete. No More! This excellent work by Ms Klein certainly will become the "bible" in this field and I feel will overshadow other works in print. The histories, methods of deteriming material, and care and repair as well as the splendid photography make this book a "must" for every collector and dealer.

This is a great new book on plastic jewelry. I especially enjoyed Chapters 1 and 2 because of the interesting background information on the production of costume jewelry and the tips on how to distinguish one type of plastic from another. Organized by color, the examples of plastic jewelry are beautifully photographed.

Partial Review.......2006-01-16

I only own the earlier "Mythical Beings" by the same author; but to the best of my ability to tell, the "Mythical Characters" part of this book is identical to that earlier book; so I am only reviewing that part of "Origami Sourcebook".

Here's what's good: these are lovely models by well-known and -respected origami artists. But that's all... the diagrams, presumably drawn by the author, are quite frankly terrible. It is possible for an experienced origamist to successfully create the models from these diagrams and instructions, but they are as much hindrance as help. I have so far finished the witch/wizard and Shiva models and am working on the long-tailed dragon and Cerberus models, but in every model I have done so far I have found multiple mistakes in the diagrams and instructions. If you like these models, I would suggest you seek the diagrams elsewhere.

2 Books in One!!! A Bargain!!!.......2004-07-02

Its great to see a reprint of Origami Mythical Creatures, i have been looking for this book for ages, and was really happy to find it lurking in the local bookshop. The diagrams may not be the best but there are really superior models included in the collection. My favourite models include the Woodland Elf and the Shiva Idol. Brilliant!!! This book would be suitable more for experienced people in origami with the quality of the diagrmming, you may need to chypher the meaning of the drawings as they lack in accuracy in regards to the proportions and landmarks in the folding sequence.

If you have "Origami Today, Mythical Beings" and "Origami Today, Lifestyle Origami", both by the same author, Jay Ansill, do not buy this book, because it is just these two book in one. Nothing new. If you do not have these books, then this is a good book, although the models are not very good, but the decorations are very pretty.

Lady on the Hill.......2007-07-12

I've read and studied regarding the lives of the Vanderbilt families and the Biltmore inparticular. This is truly one of the BEST books I've read. We've all learned about the house and George Vanderbilt's ideas and thinking on building Biltmore. This book describes the life of his wife Edith and their daughter Cornelia after his death and what they had to go through to keep Biltmore after his death. The research is absolutely amazing. For anyone who is interested or obsessed with The Biltmore, this is a MUST read.

Half way through the book it just becomes tedious. There is a fair amount of repetition. I had to purchase another book because this one lacks enough photos. We are planning a trip there in the coming weeks
and now I think I know more than I need to know.

Biltmore Since George Died.......2007-03-09

This book is intriguing for those who enjoy nonfiction. It describes how Biltmore formed a business to keep from being sold and subdivided, what happened to the family members since George's death, and the relationship between Biltmore and the city of Asheville, among other things. It is extremely interesting if you would like to know more about the history of the estate and its families.

There is not a whole lot of literature around when it comes to the Vanderbilts and the Biltmore. SO this book is a refreshing and very easy to read story about the Vanderbilts and their successes leading up to the building of Biltmore taking 6 years.

Everyone that can find the time and is planning to visit the Biltmore should read this before going. The Biltmore is so large and there are so many things to see that a visit requires some advanced planning to get the whole picture about this family and this American marvel. After our first visit to the Biltmore during this year's Christmas lights, we bought an annual access pass (upgrade while your day pass is still valid and you save a bundle), this and a picture history book. Now we are planning to go back and be prepared to really udnerstand this marvellous site.

BILTMORE.......2006-10-09

Very interesting read on how Vanderbilt heir's found a way to afford to maintain this behemouth in the foothills of the Appalations. Biltmore is without peer as far as American's great houses go, it looks like the kind of place Frances I and Catherine de Medici would have felt right at home in, it's quite simply a breathtaking tour de force, but as such a true money pit and the proverbial white elephant. You have to give Vanderbilt heir, Mr. Cecil, credit for finding people to tell him how to do what his grandfather could not, and that is to make this place, if not make money, at least break even; indeed, not an easy task. As someone who has toured Richard Morris Hunt's anachronistic Biltmore, I for one applaud his efforts; the mansion looks great and the tour is very well persented, although, very expensive, but I suppose one has to look at it as a donation of sorts, to help to assure the vital survival of this singular American mansion, and the fact it helps enrich, the already rich Vanderbilt's, I suppose it an unfortunate biproduct I can live with, frankly the Vanderbilt's, thanks to the slash and burn ruthlessness of the Commador, will probably always have wealth, well at least they gave us Anderson Cooper. Good read, highly recommended.

Nothing an Elvis Fan Hasn't Already Heard.......1998-12-03

This book is a poorly edited, mediocre attempt at describing the Colonel and his relationship to Elvis. While the book presents many interesting facts about the Colonel, it fails to put any perspective on the relationship between the most infamous manager and an American icon. Somewhere there is an interesting book to be written about the pull mediocre management has on great artists (ask the Beatles, Willie Nelson, and Billy Joel, among others). This ain't it.

Most of us have read other stories of Jewish survivors of WWII; yet young Tereska's account stands out. The author has skillfully combined the small details of a child's life - as a child will mercifully still be a child, no matter how horrific the circumstances - with an account of the war's progression in Poland. Definitely worth reading.

Converting Pain into Compassion.......2002-10-20

I most admire individuals who have gone through great struggles in their lives and convert their pain into compassion and selfless service to humanity. As a specialist in childhood regression I have learned that it is not what happened to us that determines our character -- it is what we do with those experiences. Having close relatives whose experiences in the war hauntingly parallel those of Dr. Cahn-Tober's, I have experienced firsthand how such a harrowing childhood can effect one's ability to cope as an adult. Teresa has made different choices. She deeply understands children and their emotional wounds and has devoted much of her professional life to the path of healing. I felt grateful and validated by her understanding the emotional baggage that comes with being the "child of survivors." This book was not only personally meaningful to me, it was also extremely well-written and an engrossing read. The author has a gift for storytelling and I hope that she will continue to write.

hide and seek...a great literary find!.......2002-10-04

This book begins with one of the best introductions I've seen in a long time. Here, in this short but beautifully written intro, Tober sets the tone for the retelling of her life story which resonates strength, humor, hope and love, all while giving the reader a personal inside view of living through the Holocaust. Educational without being dry or dark, hide and seek gives shining examples of love and humanity which cross over ethnic and religoius bounaries during a time of war and hate. During the book the reader is never burdened with an author's feelings of victimization, but instead inspired by the loving memories of a talented writer. Highly recommended for adults of every age, race or religion.

Hide and Seek: a wartime childhood.......2002-08-12

A compelling account of a child's experience in wartime Poland during World War II told convincingly from a child's pont of view. There is tension and adventure in her story of assuming multiple identities with a Catholic family who protects her as she and her own family hide from Nazis during a bewildering time of anti-semitism. I felt her confusion, her anxiety and her unfailing sense of humor and adventure on every page.
