I saw this book in a bookstore over the weekend and am ordering it now from Amazon. I was impressed by the detailed information the author gives for each hike. I am a native of Louisiana but still unacquainted with some of its many parts. I know 50 Hikes in Louisiana will inspire me to get to know the state better from a peripatetic perspective.

This is an outstanding book, which breaks down each trail with directions to trailheads, maps, photographs, descriptions of trails and the surrounding landscapes, wildlife and types of plants you are likely to see, and extra information on the history and geography of each area. If you are interested in getting to know the nature of Louisiana, 50 Hikes will get you there.

Best Louisiana hiking book yet!.......2004-11-28

This author is equally a hiker, a writer, and a Louisiana lover, and a shining example of all three. With excellent pictures, maps, and information on what to expect as far as animals, plants, and anything else one might encounter, this book is by far the best book on Louisiana hiking I've ever read. The stories about the area are just good Louisiana lagniappe. I can't wait to hike the Port Hudson trail!

Beautifully designed book!.......2005-10-24

I purchased this book for my 6 year old after he expressed a sudden interest in marionettes. He is not yet reading fluently, but sits eagerly by my side nightly as we read through this beautiful book together. He has learned much about the marionettes of Gustave Baumann. The photographs provide high visual interest, and the text with marionettes doing the 'speaking' is quite appealing to young children.

This book didn't go too in depth at only 122 pages, but this would be a good book for someone just toying with the idea of starting a gift basket service. It would help a person decide if this business was right for them. Also, there were quick tips on almost every page that I thought were helpful and informative.

Small, but fairly detailed and informative.......2006-11-07

Paul Griffith's study THE CONTEMPORARY COMPOSERS: GYORGY LIGETI was originally published in 1983, but considering Ligeti's immense productivity through the 1980s and 1990s, ending only a few years before his passing earlier in 2006, we are fortunate that Griffith was able to prepare a second edition. It still begins with the 1983 interview with the composer, before a London performance of "Le Grande Macabre", but it covers everything up to the first piano etude of Book III "White on White".

Because Griffith's book is not so widely distributed, it tends to be eclipsed by the lightweight Phaidon Press biography by Richard Toop, and by Richard Steinitz' large, nearly-definitive tome GYORGY LIGETI: Music of the Imagination. This lack of attention is, however, unfortunate, since Griffith's guide provide give many interesting perspectives on Ligeti's music. Unlike Toop's book, written for an audience that can't read music, Griffiths provides plenty of examples from the scores. He also has a greater knowledge of fragments and juvenalia. There is tantalizing mention of Ligeti's early conceptions for his first opera, before his librettist died in a car crash, and of his ultimately unrealized sketches for "The Tempest".

While there is much serious musicological analysis here, it is never terribly in-depth, but this is one of the strengths of the book. For Griffiths' presentation of the works is concise enough that, instead of getting lost in each, one can see the major trends of Ligeti's career. Unlike in Steinitz's biography, I can now better understand why exactly Ligeti retreated from total chromaticism in the late 1960s and rediscovery of harmony (and it wasn't just an addiction to morphine). Still, some works could have used better attention, such as "Clocks and Clouds", the "Piano Concerto", and "San Francisco Polyphony", for which Steinitz's guide serves well.

I must say I cannot understand complaints that Griffiths "mauls the English language" or engages in specious reasoning. The prose is smooth, and nearly all of his comments find corroboration from other sources.

So, if you're a Ligeti fan, Griffiths' guide is worth seeking down. Because of the vastness of Steinitz's work, and the fact he makes it all the way to the end of Ligeti's output, that book provides the best value for one's money and should be where you start, but don't neglect Toop or Griffiths.

Lux aeterna.......2006-06-22

I write this review within a week of the death of Gyogy Ligeti, in my humble opinion one of the greatest composers of the twentieth century, a gifted, talented human being with an impish sense of fun yet at the same time with a broader sense of pattern and colour in music.

This work is far from being the definitive work on the composer, that position being held by Steinitz 'Gyorgy Ligeti: Music of the Imagination', but neither is it such a poor study. One should remember that it was one of the earlier contributions on the work of Ligeti who only came to the attention of the wider public through Stanley Kubrick's unauthorised use of his music in 2001: A Space Odyssey.

I found this book a little hard going due to my lack of a musical education but I enjoyed the words of the composer himself in the interview which graces the early pages and the attributable comments throughout the subsequent chapters.

For those just coming to Ligeti's work, with formal musical training it is a useful point of departure but I would recommend further study of the excellent 'Gyorgy Ligeti: Music of the Imagination'.

As I walked through New York today I noticed a Missoni store and recalled that Ligeti was known for the sweaters from that particular source. It was a coincidence that I was in that location at a time so soom after his passing but I interpreted that as part of a complex pattern, much like his music. Indeed his time on this earth was part of such a complex pattern, and he perhaps played the part of the Cosmic Joker. In time I believe that his significance in music will be much more appreciated than it is now.

All I can do is concur. In all cases you should skip this book, but especially you should skip it if you have any regard whatsoever for the English language. If you are interested in Ligeti (whether or not you're a musician), you should read instead GYORGY LIGETI (20TH-CENTURY COMPOSERS) By Richard Toop.

To Toop first!.......2001-03-31

I'd rate this higher just because I find the subject so fascinating were not two very good alternatives available: Richard Toop's "Gyorgy Ligeti (20th-Century Composers)" and "Ligeti In Conversation". There is no need at all to suffer through "Gyorgy Ligeti: Contemporary Composer"'s extremely affected and nonsensical mauling of the English language, its banal observations, its specious reasoning.

One Of the Best Modern Composers........2000-06-09

In my opinion Gyorgi Ligeti is one of the Greatest composers of the 20th century and this book is a fine introduction on him, it was first published in 1983 but was updated in 1997.

After a short introduction there is an interview with the composer and in part two the author traces Ligetis career and his development as a Composer.

If you have not heard Ligetis music check out the great Sony edition of his works, for those who know him and want to know more about the man and the composer, this is a good book to start with, it is not long, about 180 pages so there is not room for a detailed analysis af his works but it covers the basics well enough and has some notation samples of some his major works. The book ends with a list of Ligetis Works and Recordings.

Another good book by Paul Griffiths is his Modern Music.

William Lowther Jackson was overshadow by his cousin Stonewall Jackson. Jee who wouldn't be, but William Jackson performances serving in the Confederate Army was out standing, even through most of the war his troops had to endure poor logistics, communications, reinforcements, you name it and the South was Short on almost everything.

As part of Jubal Early's Valley Campaign (Shenandoah Valley July-September 1864) his unit of less then 4000 cavalrymen seldom fought as a unit as it's services as scouts and flank guards were to important. On 11 July 1864, William Jackson's Brigade penetrated the defense of Washington D.C. as far as the Seventh Street fort near Silver Springs, Maryland. Intending to enter Washington the next day. Two Union divisions from the Federal Sixth Corps, were rushed over night in position to block Jackson. Jubal Early realised he did not have enough manpower to carry the new Federal position assigned Jackson's brigade to cover the withdrawal.

William Jackson was on his way to command a infantry regiment at Philippi when the first shots were fired in Virginia at Grafton. General George A. Porterfield was commanding a small force of about 800 rebels at Phillipi. these inexperienced soldiers abandoned their post on the road (from Grafton) that ran along the heights, that dominated the town of Philippi on the night of 2nd June 1861. These troops were soaked from heavy rains and sought shelter not knowing the Union army was approaching till a early morning 0430AM (3 Jun 1861)bombardment of the town send these troops running for their lives south. They did not stop till they reached Beverly nearly 40 miles away. William Jackson finally caught up to them at Huttonsville 5 miles south of Beverly. It was here that he started his war. He became very active and drilled his undisciplined men in to tough soldiers that was a characteristic of his for the rest of the war.

Though little known today, Mary Gove Nichols (1810-84) was once one of the most infamous and influential women in America, a radical social reformer and pioneering feminist who preached equality in marriage, free love, spiritualism, the health risks of corsets and masturbation, the benefits of the cold-water cure, and, above all, the importance of happiness. A victim of emotional and sexual abuse at the hands of her first husband, she made it her life's work to ensure that other women were better informed about their bodies and their opportunities than she had been. After leaving her first husband, she became a national figure in the 1840s and '50s by giving anatomy lectures around the country, attended by thousands of women, in which she openly discussed the needs, details, and desires of the female body. With her second husband, medical writer and social reformer Thomas Low Nichols, she embarked on an unprecedented intellectual and professional collaboration, and together they challenged the inequities of conventional marriage, demanded the right of every woman to have control over her body, and advocated universal good health.

Jean Silver-Isenstadt's book is an exhaustively researched and beautifully-written biography of this prominent nineteenth-century reformer, Mary Gove Nichols, and her husband, Thomas Low Nichols. In addition to the captivating life story of Nichols, Silver-Isenstadt inlcudes rich detail of American cultural history in the narrative, and in many enjoyable detours, she rounds out the picture of Nichols and her historical context by including information about subjects as wide-ranging as other health reformers, water cure therapy, and transcendentalist writers. All of this helps us understand Nichols' central and at times path-breaking role in several intersecting reform movements of her time.
A fine historical text, this book is a very readable and engaging book for non-academics and academics alike. Great for professional and armchair historians.

Beautifully Written; Carefully Researched.......2002-07-14

Too little is known of the advances of women in antebellum America. Mary Gove Nichols was an important and fascinating part of this scene, and she is brought to life in this interesting and well-researched biography. Nichols' personal quest for independence from a tragic marriage is agonizing, but only when she achieves such freedom does her real story begin. A writer and teacher, her move to New York City in 1845 led to her knowing some of the era's most important literary people---Poe, Bryant, N. P. Willis, Margaret Fuller, Frances Osgood, and others---and to her association with important social and scientific movements of the day---mesmerism, phrenology, Fouierism, Swedenborgianism, and especially water-cure. Criticized as an advocate for free love, Nichols toured the country, lecturing to women on such taboo subjects as female anatomy and masturbation. Her story is remarkable as is Jean Silver-Isenstadt's telling of it.

This book is that rarest of works--a wonderful read on an important, thought-provoking subject. As a biographer, Jean Silver-Isenstadt shows us how an individual life can reflect and reveal the ideas and ideals of a particular time and place, but she never reduces Mary Gove Nichols to a mere product of her era. Instead, the author deftly intertwines her subject's story with cogent and relvant insights into the history of health care and women's history, with the result that Mary Gove Nichols seems more--and not less--real.

When Medicine and Health Care were still interesting.......2002-04-18

The mental health care system today fills one with dread. Physicians with ties to the pharmaceutical industry, with some interest in curing you but with an eye on body materials, tissues, blood, and organs that can be harvested and sold at great profit confront us all. Reading this extremely well-written book provides a perspective at a very different moment in the history of medicine. Mary Gove Nichols advocated a wide variety of alternatives to standard medical care which, if one thinks about it, were not all that bad. They were undoubtedly far superior to what orthodox physicians prescribed at the time: blood-letting, mercury, leeches, purgatives, emetics, and the like. Individuals surviving that kind of treatment could truly be proud of their superior health! Mary Gove Nichols, feminist and physician, was one of the very first women to lecture on medicine to whoever would come and listen. She advocated a healthy diet, the water cure, proper exercise, and rest; ideas that have well stood up the test of time.
The book is very well written; the illustrations are wonderful. It is a true treasure!! And, for a book from an academic publisher, remarkably affordable.

Amazing pre-Civil War activist.......2002-04-14

All my life, I've thought of 18th and 19th century women as uneducated homemakers, good at making quilts or helping clear the land. Mary Gove Nichols and her second husband Thomas Nichols seem so absolutely current. She was out there, giving lectures to women on their anatomy and physiology, teaching publicly about healthy sexuality and about equality in marriage. For people who just know about spa history from the novel and movie, Road to Wellville, this book will win your respect and even awe.
And this book is a great read! It will spark up any women's studies, or 19th Century American studies, or history of medicine reading list. You'll pass this one along to your friends for a great summer read as well, especially if you are going to Upstate New York, or to Antioch and Yellow Springs. Her life was filled with adventures. This really does read like a novel.

This issue explores the force that information technologies exert on the direction of our society and its implications for democracy. The articles complement the 2001 National Civic League national conference on governance, titled Digital Democracy and explore a range of themes surrounding the ongoing development of "e-democracy."
