Book Description
One Woman Who Helped Changed the Course of the Civil War
A New Book on Anna Ella Carroll, a National Heroine from Maryland
"...Miss Anna Ella Carroll is the head of the Carroll race, and when the history of this war is written, she will stand a good bit taller than ever old Charles did."
-- Pres. Abraham Lincoln, as quoted by Rep. William Mitchell (R-Ind.), 13 May 1862
New York, NY (Release Date: June 23, 2004) - Hundreds of biographies have been written about the men and women of the Civil War, yet none has fully presented the life and crucial contributions of Anna Ella Carroll, Pres. Abraham Lincoln's political adviser. In her new book, Great Necessities: The Life, Times, and Writings of Anna Ella Carroll, 1815-1894, C. Kay Larson provides a penetrating account of this Southern lady who broke all the rules for women of the era.
Anna Ella Carroll was the daughter of Maryland Gov. Thomas King Carroll. Under his tutelage, she honed her exceptional skills in political and legal analysis.
During the 1850s, Carroll became a nationally-known publicist for prominent Whig and American (Know-Nothing) party candidates. When the secession crisis roiled the country in 1861, Carroll provided invaluable assistance to Gov. Thomas H. Hicks in keeping their state loyal. She also wrote able political/legal tracts for the Lincoln administration that helped maintain support for the war effort which were widely circulated in Washington and Maryland.
In Great Necessities, new evidence also is presented that clarifies Carroll's, President Lincoln's, and Secty. of War Edwin M. Stanton's roles in the Tennessee River campaign. In this strategic advance, Brig. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant and Flag Officer Andrew Hull Foote led combined army-naval forces which captured Confederate Forts Henry and Donelson. These constituted the "first real" victories for the Union during the Civil War.
Other fresh material on American political history and the colonization of freedmen, among other topics, also is included in the book.
Great Necessities brings to the fore the spirited life and works of Anna Ella Carroll, arguably, the most important woman involved in American politics in the nineteenth century. This book will greatly enhance Carroll's stature as a heroine of the state of Maryland, and the nation.
Customer Reviews:
Underrated Civil War woman.......2005-01-26
C. Kay Larson is one of the pioneering scholars on the issue of women who served as soldiers and in other capacities during the American Civil War. In this scholarly and thorough treatise, she does justice to a remarkable Maryland woman who played a prominent role in state and national government in the 19th Century, including the Civil War period. This is a meaty biography of an underrated, intellectual, and highly influential woman who interacted with Senators and Presidents.
A Must Read for Lincoln and Grant students.......2004-10-04
C. Kay Larson has a lot of contextual material in this book, ranging from the first English translation of the Bible; to the history of Presbyterianism and its relation to the Know-Nothing movement; to Baltimore labor strikes; to the politics of the Mexican War, the 1860 election, postwar Maryland, and Reconstruction.
But for Civil War and Lincoln buffs go right to the Secession and Tennessee River campaign chapters. In these are apparently new facts on Confederate plans to stage a coup of Washington DC in April 1861 and Lincoln's appointment of Stanton (see James Wheeler's analysis above) to carry out the Tennessee R. campaign.
Carroll, herself, directly contributes with 3 newly discovered "Hancock" columns on Seward's, Bell's, Bates's and Botts's candidacies in the 1860 presidential election. Reprinted here also are her 4 most important pamphlets that Carroll wrote for the Lincoln administration on the war powers of the presidency and the suspension of the writ of habeas corpus.
This book may upend much thinking on the war as it seemingly takes us to new places. It just doesn't resift the same facts and myths. The extensive reprinting of primary sources solidifies arguments and makes for great reading of eloquent spokepersons.

A good set of scholarly essays.......2004-09-11
The Chancellors provides a series of biographical essays on the British Chancellors at the end of the 19th and during the first half of the 20th centuries. Jenkins has chosen not to treat each Chancellor in the same way, given differences in the careers of each man. Thus there is no attempt to offer a biography of Churchill in a brief essay, but the analysis of Simon is expanded to include more than just his tenure of 11 Downing Street. The essays do make cross references to one another, but can essentially be treated as stand alone works.
Jenkins' style of biography was, of course, honed over the years, and though these essays may not live quite to the standard of his longer works ("Gladstone", for instance) they remain enjoyable. There is a certain amount of contemporary analogy in some of the pieces, which may date the book (and certainly did not tend to appear in Jenkins' other works), but this in no way detracts from an objective and scholarly set of essays.

Thorough and Detailed.......2007-01-02
This is a thorough and detailed book which covers a wide range of tips that you should find useful and important in enhancing your communication skills. The book covers all the critical aspects of communication including the communication process, the need for effective, active listening, verbal, non-verbal and writing skills, being assertive, effective negotiations, effective public speaking and presentations, among others.
Most of us are poor listeners, as we tend to listen with intent to response rather than to understand what the speaker is really communicating to us. With self-control and discipline, the book gives us tips that we can follow to be effective and active listeners.
This is a self-help that is easy to read and understand and follow. It has a lot of tips and practical advice that should help you change to become a more effective communicator.
Comprehensive Compendium of 1042 Communication Tips.......2006-06-20
A comprehensive compendium of 1042 tips belonging on every committed communicator's reference shelf. Whether a neophyte or accomplished communicator, you will find a useful tip or reminder, each time you open this book.
Easy to Read.......2006-02-24
Dianna Booher writes with clarity and detail, and her book is so easy to read. We're all communicating in one way or another, and Dianna's insights are extremely valuable. You also might learn something about yourself as a listener. I highly recommend this book.
Essential for anyone.......2002-12-25
While this book has a business focus, there are many techniques shown that can be used in all facets of life - in the family, with friends, or in organizations and sports teams. It's a huge (1000+) list of tips for various situations. How do you deal with someone who's not pulling their weight? You don't have to be a manager at work - you can have unresponsive kids, friends who take much more than they give, and committee members who are just along for the ride.
All the points are obvious, but in real life we forget, communicate badly, and then make a bad situation worse. This book has the sort of information that someone gives you when they say, "In that situation I always do . . ." and you could hit yourself for not thinking of it at the time. If you read and re-read this book you'll begin to have these ideas when you need them, not afterward.
The tip formula is excellent. Too many books try to put ideas across in ordinary text and become confusing and unclear. Each tip and its supporting text is complete. You won't be left wondering what the author meant.
I teach people to make presentations and there is plenty here I intend to pass along. My order is in for Booher's forthcoming "Speak With Confidence," because if it's even half as good as this book, it will be invaluable.
One last thought. Think about the times you didn't communicate that well. Think about the stress, the bad relations with other people, and all the negative things that resulted. Now look at the price of this book. Isn't it worth that price just to communicate effectively one time, let alone all the times this book will save the day?
RIP OFF.......2002-02-18
The only thing exciting about the book is the title. I could not wait to get the book and read it. I can't remember being this disappointed in a book - ever. There is nothing of any value in this - just warmed over hyperbole. I am so po'd that I wasted money on this rip off.

Right on the money.......2006-08-18
As a veteran communications trainer with over 20 years of training and leadership experience, I found this book encompassed very 'actionable' advice, practical insights, and meaningful guidance for those sincerely interested in becoming better communicators, leaders, and people. I strongly recommend it.
I have not read this book.......2006-06-04
Nothing makes me come out of my reviewing-books-I've-actually-read-procrastination-pit quicker than when I see a pattern like this one:
Between May 3 2003 and May 13 2003 this book receives 10 of its 13 reviews, all of which are five stars...hmm...
This really sucks. I try not to write negative reviews like this but I just can't stand the thought of all us innocent ("...") people out there using the review system to help us make decisions when the system is, in cases like this one, blatantly and disrespectfully abused for shameless self-gain.
Boo-hiss, you're rubbish!
Tips for spotting potentially fake-reviews:
- Tight date-clusters (someone sits at home and knocks off a set of reviews, perhaps for a couple of weeks after book release/the idea first comes)
- A whole bunch of short reviews, often lacking in range or style-variation (all 5-star, naturally) with no bias or 'downsides' to the book (the fake reviewer wants you to buy the book: reviews are all written by one person- often incapable of writing in different reviewer-styles, short because they can't be bothered going to great imaginative lengths (they primarily want to improve the average star-rating; the prime decision factor for joe-buyer))
- a stack of reviewers who have only ever reviewed THIS book (i.e. names 'reviers' give in Amazon are purely for the purpose of writing this single review: sure some probably only DO review one book or forget their old reviewer name or whatever, but not 20 out of the 22 reviewers, surely? One book was 5-star reviewed by 20 people in a space of a month, most of them with "real name" signatures - which is time consuming because you have to verify your name with a credit card- but none of them, despite having gone through the process of name verification bothered to review any other items despite two years passing since their first book review...odd methinks.)
Of course there was one book which had only received 4-star ratings (less-suspicious), but it met all the criteria: large number of short, unimaginative reviews, with flaky-names, all in a one-month date cluster, all by reviewers who never reviewed any other book... hmm...
As before - I'm giving a three star-rating so I myself don't adversely affect the rating of what may well be a good book.
OK, so clearly I need to get out more, but was it helpful that I pointed this out to you?
Anyone else from Scottsdale?.......2004-01-03
I wonder what the odds would be of yet another reviewer from Scottsdale, AZ giving this book five stars?
I wish Amazon had a better system of cleaning up obvious abuse of its ratings system. I've already suggested a "Ratings Abuse Notification" option through their email customer service which is yet to be acted on. Would be a good idea if readers of Amazon reviews could make it a point to alert others of suspicious book ratings.
a must read book.......2003-09-10
After reading "Say it Right the First Time" through for the third time, my prevailing and dominant thought was " I wish I could have had this book 10 years ago". the importance of this book cannot be overstated. 'Say it Right the First Time" should and will eventually finds its place on the shelf next to Dale Carnegie and Napolian Hill as "must reads" for anyone who wishes to succeed in the business world...and in life.

"Say It Right" lacks psychological insight.......2003-08-24
Ms. Malandro's book "Say It Right the First Time" has surface appeal, yet ultimately fails as a self-help communication manual, primarily due to its inability to understand the psychological principles (such as unchangeable self-interest) behind much miscommunication. The book is full of advice that seems intuitively right, but when put into practice does not pass the "reality" test.

"LIFE IN THE SLOW TRACK" ...is a track you'll enjoy !.......2001-03-27
"LIFE IN THE SLOW TRACK" is a delightful and charming way to learn a little more about "how it was" back in 1939. The exuberance and dreams of three spirited young lads are aptly described in the tale. The boys' idea of riding their bikes from Baraboo, Wisconsin to The New York World's Fair comes to life as Wichern recounts the story of their preparation and planning, the actual journey, and the trip back home.
The simple story-telling style is captivating as the author shares some thoughts, emotions and conflicts involved in forming an alliance with two other people as the three of them pursued their common goal. The writer seems eloquently truthful and non-defensive as he relates mistakes made and lessons learned. He brings to light the goodness of people met along the way, some very special friendships that developed, and of course the fun they had on their quest for "New York, or Bust." The creativity used for funding the trip and the boys' love of music and talent for harmonizing are woven throughout the story.
The epilogue brings more history and human interest from the wartime era, and the pictures scattered throughout are one more way of skillfully capturing the feeling of what it was like for three young boys experiencing "Life in the Slow Track."
