Review of Gleim Financial Accounting Questions & Explanation.......2001-03-25
Gleim offers a wonderful study guide with the Financial Accounting Exam Questions and Explanations book. A recent college grad, this book was used as a supplementary study aid by my accounting instructors that gives multiple choice type questions with suppoting explanations of both the correct and incorrect answers of recent CPA exam questions. It is a great asset and I plan to use it in preparation of the CPA exam.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2000-04-27
This book is great! The questions are very helpful and relate well to the chapters in my intermediate textbook. The explanations to the correct answers are also very helpful when you get a question wrong. The CPA exam questions used in the book are challenging, but are a good preparation for the CPA exam. Also, the many professors like to use questions directly from this book, for their exams!

Product Description
Readers learn how and live happy, full lives again after challenging times. During painful, hard times, the author says that people form beliefs and come to conclusions that just are not true. Uncovering and changing those beliefs frees us to heal from the past and move toward what we really want.
Customer Reviews:
Changing self limiting beliefs.......2002-10-18
Travelling Free is a book that provides 12 written exercises for you to systematically find out what old patterns or beliefs are running your life and causing unhappiness.
I take out a pen and paper with each chapter and find myself getting happier. The tried and true questions and exercises are taken from the author's 20 years of experience working with people privately and in workshops around the country.
This book has a freshness to it and before you realize it, you're actually shedding emotional baggage so you really can travel free.
My well worn copy of this book has stayed by my bedside for 10 years and I sleep peacefully because of it.
Works with 12-Step programs, too........2002-08-11
Travelling Free is for anyone and everyone who struggles to let go of things from their past. Mandy Evans' unique insight and helpful stories from real life guide you to an understanding of the beliefs that continue to limit your life. It is enjoyable to read, uplifting and absolutely usable. I have had my copy for over a decade and I re-read it from time to time just to remind myself of the possibilities available to me. This book is positive and pracitcal. There's no fluff in Travelling Free - just the helpful tools you need to fly.
Let Experience Be Your Guide.......2002-02-04
Travelling Free is a modest little gem packed with a wealth of rich information. In a day of abundant self-help books, this one could go unnoticed in its rather unassuming package. However, for anyone really interested in "doing the work" of releasing the emotional weight that binds us, this is a treasure. Mandy shares with you a host of experiential exercises, that if followed provides the reader with invaluable personal information. Her work is deep and insightful, coming from the wisdom of long experience. In her casual, yet profound style she provides us with a clear pathway to exploring the inner landscape of our self-defeating beliefs, and equips us with the tools to change them.
If you're serious about change, don't overlook this one!
A Real Breakthrough In Recovery Books.......2001-12-02
A must read for anyone involved in the recovery field. As a Drug and Alcohol Counselor, I have read numerous books that are valuable and inspiring, but that frequently seem to be saying the same thing in only a slightly different way. TRAVELLING FREE, however brings readers to examine their past in a new and indeed freeing way so they can gain understanding and most importantly, move on! This is the most helpful book I've read and recommended to clients; it enables them to move through self-defeating belief systems that have been holding them back.
How to get over almost anything and move on........1996-12-01
A truly useful life changing book, Travelling Free mixes case studies with easy to do exercises and an interesting approach to human belief systems.
Takes some work and courage for the reader, but well worth it.
The thing I liked best was that concept of creating a new life became very real by the end

Customer Reviews:
Too generic to be of any use..............2007-09-07
I bought this book because I knew the author and thought she might have something interesting to say. As a person that has spent the last four years researching the divorce industry and its impact on people especially children, I believe I have a better understanding of it than Dr. Appell (who has been working in this field as a professional for many, many years). The author does make a few good points but it takes too many pages to get those few points across. Most of the book is so generic and high level that it is useless. The complexities of the issues she tries to cover can't be done without a true understanding of the what causes them and this book misses the point.
Save your money and time!!!!
Covers working with 'problem' personalities, domestic abuse, child custody, alternatives to litigation, and more........2007-03-06
"Divorce Doesn't Have To Be That Way: A Handbook For The Helping Professional" by Jane Appell (a private practice psychologist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Tufts new England medical Center, and President of the Massachusetts Association of Guardians Ad Litem) offers marriage counselors and family therapists with a complete guide to divorce counseling with an emphasis on providing healthy support to clients that is family centered and non-adversarial. Step-by-step therapeutic intervention procedures are outlined and explained covering all of the key elements of the divorce process from initial decision to relevant legal issues. Highly recommended as informed and informative reading, "Divorce Doesn't Have To Be That Way" covers working with 'problem' personalities, domestic abuse, child custody, alternatives to litigation, and more. Also strongly recommended from Impact Publishers' 'The Practical Therapist Series' for therapists counseling couples considering or engaging in divorce actions is "Defusing The High-Conflict Divorce: A Treatment Guide For Working With Angry.
Divorce should offer opportunities for growth.......2007-02-07
Seeing divorce as a growth process is no easy feat when you're bogged down in the needs, responsibilities, and emotions surrounding your breakup. As author Appell points out, most of the professionals you turn to for help are committed to using their power in an intelligent, wise manner. They want to do what they can to minimize pain, protect the kids involved, and promote a peaceful dissolution of marriage that doesn't have to leave anybody devastated. That's the ideal. The problem is that there hasn't been much in the way of good training materials to guide helpers in keeping the big picture in view and steering clients through divorce in a healthy, positive way.
Appell wrote this comprehensive handbook to give helping professionals a practical reference for honing skills and developing instincts in today's complicated divorce environment. There's a lot of information available, she says, but not much solid advice on how to apply it. That's what she does here, addressing each issue from her own experience as a custody evaluator, parenting coordinator, mediator, and psychotherapist. She knows that what seems like help is often actually a hindrance in the long run; that helping is not always about being an advocate in the aggressive sense of the word, fighting to help your client win custody or keep the house or nail an abusive ex with a restraining order. Those things might constitute a kind of support, she explains, but they're not always in the best interest of the client. Appell strives to make professionals -- marriage and family therapists, psychologists, social workers, guidance counselors, physicians, clergy, and others -- aware of the ripple effects every divorce decision has.
This book includes a concise summary of the divorce system and its key players, as well as an overview of the societal context of divorce. It details alternatives to litigation, and offers descriptive scenarios and tools for keeping conflict to a minimum and clients "at the maximum level of functioning" throughout the process. Appell advocates a holistic approach to balancing the needs of individuals, couples, and families, so they can transition as productively as possible under the circumstances. Since this is a highly charged area to work in, helpers must be objective and rational as well as sensitive if their ultimate goal is to be a force for healing. This is an empowering, well-written guide for anyone working in the helping professions.

Healing the Trauma of Domestic Violence: A Workbook for Women (New Harbinger Self-Help Workbook)
ASIN: 0803973802 |
Book Description
"I found this book to be penetrating, easy to read, and very thought provoking. . . . It really is an excellent treatment of a sensitive subject. I highly recommend it." --Nicolette Jackson, Re-Entry Center of Orange County Community College, Costa Mesa, California "Mollie Whalen's book Counseling to End Violence Against Women is subversive in the best sense of the word. She has tackled head-on the challenge of a social action approach to working with abused women. The book is provocative, challenging the reader to pursue fundamental social change in the practice of counseling victims of domestic violence." --Ruth A. Brandwein, The University of Utah "After years of heavy psychologizing discourse, a book has finally come along that places initiation into the women's movement at the core of counseling violated women. Mollie Whalen cuts through professionalization and brings the political back into the process of counseling women. A wonderfully subversive work." --Bonnie Burstow, Private Practice, Toronto Feminist theory has viewed violence against women as a result of a male-dominated society, but traditional counseling models for battered women have largely failed to encourage social change as a solution to this disturbing epidemic. Offering challenging arguments on the power of the counseling relationship to initiate change, Counseling to End Violence Against Women unites feminist and radical feminist theory and counseling practice to promote women's liberation from violence and sexual oppression. In her comprehensive model, author Mollie Whalen examines the historical roles of the women's movement and the battered women's movement in relation to the development of a politically subversive approach to counseling. Whalen's model focuses not only on empowering individual women but on seizing the collective power of women to end their victimization. Grounded in theory, this practical model also addresses professional issues that confront counselors in their work with battered women. In Counseling to End Violence Against Women, Whalen reconstructs the role of counseling with victimized women and promotes a valuable model for use in treatment and training. Counselors and counseling students will find her perspective challenging and invaluable.

Book Description
Written by one of this country's leading experts on American Judaism, this book offers a snapshot of Orthodoxy Jewry in the United States, asking how the community has evolved in the years since World War II and where it is headed in the future. Incorporating rich details of everyday life, fine-grained observations of cultural practices, descriptions of educational institutions, and more, Samuel Heilman delineates the varieties of Jewish Orthodox groups, focusing in particular on the contest between the proudly parochial, contra-acculturative haredi Orthodoxy and the accomodationist modern Orthodoxy over the future of this religious community. What emerges overall is a picture of an Orthodox Jewry that has gained both in numbers and intensity and that has moved farther to the religious right as it struggles to define itself and to maintain age-old traditions in the midst of modernity, secularization, technological advances, and the pervasiveness of contemporary American culture.
Customer Reviews:
mostly insightful, occasionally superficial .......2007-01-14
The basic purpose of this book is to explain the growth of hareidi Orthodoxy (that is, Orthodox Judaism that tends to be not particularly interested in Americanization, and more interested in religious stringency) as opposed to modern Orthodoxy (which tends to combine strict adherence to traditional religious practices with Americanization). The two forms of Orthodoxy are not separate denominations, but merely divergent tendencies within the Orthodox movement- more analogous to vague categories such as "conservative" and "moderate" than to membership organizations such as "Democrats" and "Republicans." Both tendencies flow out of the same tradition, and a person or synagogue can be "hareidi" in certain respects and "modern" in others.
Heilman suggests that hareidi forms of Orthodoxy have grown and that modern Orthodoxy has become more strict. (This conclusion is based on more conjecture than data; however, it is not clear to me that there is any easy way of proving the point). Why? Heilman lists the following possible causes:
1. As American culture has become more permissive on sexual matters, the American mainstream has become less attractive to Orthodox Jews (who oppose premarital sex and homosexuality).
2. As modern Orthodox Jews have become more educated and materially succesful, fewer modern Orthodox Jews have become interested in less renumerative fields such as Jewish education and the rabbinate. As a result, modern Orthodox children are often educated by teachers and rabbis from hareidi backgrounds.
3. Hareidim tend to have more children than modern Orthodox Jews; as in other religions, demography favors traditionalism.
As other reviewers pointed out, this book focuses heavily on metropolitan New York where hareidi Jews tend to live. I would love to read a book showing how these tendencies play out in communities too small to support hareidi-oriented synagogues and neighborhoods - but to be fair, that's not really the book Heilman set out to write.
An Important Topic.......2006-10-10
This was a well written book that provided many reasons for the apparent shift to the right amongst Orthodox Jews in America. Especially interesting were the analysis of the day school movement, and the lack of modern orthodox educators in this field. I thought that the book should have focused more on American Orthodoxy as a whole rather than just looking at a few neighborhoods in New York. Also, Heilman didn't really address the fact that much of this right wing shift may be on the superficial level only having to do with outward appearances. I thought the section devoted to analyzing posters was too long and didn't really add to the thesis of the book. Even with these weaknesses, I am glad that Heilman wrote this book, and I hope more books on the social aspects of Orthodox culture will be published in the future.
Disappointing.......2006-09-28
Overall, I found this book disappointing. In its defense, its basic thesis of the movement of Jewish American Orthodoxy towards the `right' (more closed and intensely religious) is interesting, and I am sure accurate, and Heilman's analysis of its evolution is insightful and well-researched. However, I was extremely bothered by the lack of any attempt to portray Hareidi society through the prism of its own value system, or in fact any attempt to understand their values at all. Heilman accepts his own world view as absolute and obvious to the reader, and in this context denigrates a society with an entirely different set of goals and aspirations. Examples of this include his assumption of the primacy of feminism and the worth of secular culture. Hareidi society has its own worldview which, although too complex to elaborate on here, has valid and very real reasons for its hierarchy of values, reasons which Heilman completely disparages or ignores. (For an example of a book that is not written by a religious author, yet is able to appreciate Hareidim from their own perspective try "Real Jews" by Noah Efron). In general, I found his view of religion as a mere sociological construct (i.e. a defensive reaction to the Holocaust) to be grossly insensitive to the Hareidi intense religious belief founded on thousands of years of tradition.
The latter half of the book I found a pathetic attempt to draw conclusions from insignificant pieces of information. For example the juxtaposition of poster A condemning something to a poster advertising B implies that poster A is condemning B as well. Or two posters (put out by the same company) advertising two different types of music indicates that the community is embattled over the appropriateness of one type of music.
In conclusion, although I eagerly awaited this book and found a fraction of it interesting and intelligent, my overall impression is negative due to the authors biased approach and manipulative use of insignificant information.
Fascinating Book.......2006-08-31
This book brings Samuel Heilman back to looking at American Jewish Orthodoxy. His trenchant and persuasive analysis shows how and why there is a move to the religious right among America's Orthodox Jews. The book also provides facinating analyses of the role of the Holocaust in all this, provides a good review of the numbers of Jews who are Orthodox in its various streams and then takes us into the neighborhoods and the institutions for a closer look, including a review of posters. There's even a hilarious and revealing look at the orthodox on the internet. A great read!

The War Between the Jews.......2001-03-06
It's always assumed that there were no observant Jews in America prior to the great Eastern European migration that began in the 1880's. Rabbi I. Harold Sharfman, the author of "Jews on the Frontier" and the founder of the "Half-Moon K" Kashrut Organization, has gathered a sampler of sermons, journals and synagogue records to show the rise of Reform and the resistance of Orthodox Judaism from 1840 to 1860. The only flaw I could find in this book is the lack of footnotes, although if citations had been included the book would be much longer than 750 pages! Nevertheless I highly recommend this to anyone who is studying the history of Judaism in America.
Book Description
Far from simply vanishing in the face of modernity, Orthodox Jews in the United States today are surviving and flourishing. Samuel C. Heilman and Steven M. Cohen, both distinguished scholars of Jewish studies, have joined forces in this pathbreaking book to articulate this vibrancy and to characterize the many faces of Orthodox Jewry in contemporary America. Who are these Orthodox Jews? How have they survived, what do they believe and practice and how do they accommodate the tension between traditional Jewish and modern American values? Drawing on a survey of more than one thousand participants, the authors address these questions and many more.
Heilman and Cohen reveal that American Jewish Orthodoxy is not a monolith by distinguishing its three broad varieties: the "traditionalists," the "centrists," and the "nominally" orthodox. To illuminate this full spectrum of orthodoxy the authors focus on the "centrists," taking us through the dimensions of their ritual observances, religious beliefs, community life, and their social, political, and sexual attitudes. Both parochial and cosmopolitan, orthodox and liberal, these Jews are characterized by their dualism, by their successful involvement in both the modern Western world and in traditional Jewish culture. In painting this provocative and fascinating portrait of what Jewish Orthodoxy has become in America today, Heilman and Cohen's study also sheds light on the larger picture of the persistence of religion in the modern world.

One Traditional Subculture's Blueprint For Revival.......2002-06-06
While this book does have some minor shortcomings--such as a restricted sample and neglect of the "ultra-orthodox" wing of Judaism--I still give it five stars, in part because the authors have done us the rare favor of delving into the subject of how a traditionalist, religious subculture can not only survive but thrive in the midst of an alien dominant culture. It was not that long ago when assimilationist Jews and non-Jews alike were confidently predicting the inevitable demise of traditionalist Judaism... Yet at the same time there were other Jews who foresaw that the assimilationist or integrationist strategy could only lead to extinction. They imported traditional Jewish rabbis from the old country to lead their communities and funneled as many of their children as possible into Jewish religious schools, which the authors regard as decisive for traditionalism's unexpected success. Consequently, their faith remained sufficiently intense and their social cohesion and collective identity sufficiently strong to maintain birth rates comfortably above replacement level, high rates of religious observance, and low defection rates, even while their more secularized counterparts saw their birth rates plunge to a level persistently below replacement and their children begin to outmarry at a high rate. Not only did traditionalists defy the integrationists'confident prophecies of doom, but they seem to be growing even more traditional; that is, judging from the sample used for this book, the younger generation is actually *more* religiously observant than their traditionalist parents... Although the literary style of this academic treatise is dry, I very highly recommend it to anyone interested in the survival of embattled or endangered subcultures...
fundamentally flawed study.......2001-07-18
This book presents itself as a sociological study of the Modern Orthodox Jewish population in North America. Included are discussions of this group's religious attitudes and values, its voting patterns, and its orientation towards American society and culture in general.
Unfortunately, this book's basic approach to the subject is so fundamentally flawed that you are more likely to be misinformed than to learn anything when you read it.
For one thing, the authors took almost half of their statistical data (490 responses out of 1023) from questionnaires answered by members of the Lincoln Square Synagogue in Manhattan's Upper West Side, a truly vibrant congregation with dynamic adult education and outreach programs, but obviously not representative of the rest of Modern Orthodox community in New York, or anywhere else for that matter!
But the main problem lies in the categories of religious observance Heilman builds out of thin air, and upon which he bases his arguments. Most of the discussion focuses on a middle group of Modern Orthodox Jews, which Heilman confusingly terms the "centrists," despite the fact that he uses the very same term in other places to refer to the Modern Orthodox population as a whole. To make his middle category, Heilman groups people who are completely religious but still eat cold salad with non-kosher utensils (when visiting friends' homes) together with people who turn on lights on Shabbos. Heilman excludes members of this category from the "traditionalist" right-wing group merely because they will eat cold salad on non-kosher dishes, even though that act is often completely permissible even according to the strictest interpretations of Jewish law! We can understand why, as Heilman admits, many respondents found the survey's questions problematic and wrote lengthy notes to explain their answers. (Unfortunately, it doesn't appear that the book makes much use of their clarifications.)
The result of this is to create a large grouping which will necessarily appear ambivalent and divided over key issues of religious dogma and behavior. So it comes as no surprise when only 54% of this group "agree strongly" that "the Torah was revealed by God to Moses at Sinai"! And since Heilman doesn't give us any statistical breakdown within his made-up categories, it is impossible to know how many of the strictly observant do NOT feel strongly that the Torah was revealed at Sinai, and thus any useful inferences or insights that we might have drawn from the responses are lost and beyond retrieval.
Another general problem with the book: Although it is indeed true that members of the so-called Modern Orthodox community are likely to be less punctiliously observant than their "right-wing" brethren, Heilman seems to believe that all Orthodox Jews who actively engage and participate in wider American society are NECESSARILY ambivalent about basic Jewish law and theology. In many sections, he seems to confuse and lump together more strictly observant Modern Orthodox Jews with the "picturesque" ultra-right-wing Orthodox. It would seem that according to his categories, most of the theologians and scholars of Modern Orthodoxy wouldn't be considered Modern Orthodox.
The usefulness of the book is also severely limited because it doesn't even include the text of the questionnaire. (Although an appendix with the exact wording of the questions is promised in the text, none can be find anywhere in the volume!)
In conclusion, this book is simply not representative of the talents of Heilman, who is one of the world's leading sociologists of the American Jewish community.

Book Description
The last in a series of three volumes edited by Marc Lee Raphael surveying some of the major rabbinic and lay personalities who have shaped Judaism in America for the past two centuries, this work focuses on Orthodox Judaism. Along with a basic description of the achievements of some of the most notable leaders, a bibliography of their writings and sources for further study is included as well as an essay on Orthodox rabbinic organizations and a survey of American Orthodox periodicals. Of interest to scholars, students, and lay persons alike, this volume will inform readers about the earliest communities of Jews who settled in America as they developed the institutions of Orthodox Jewish life and set a public standard of compliance with Jewish law. These early American Jews followed a Spanish-Dutch version of Sephardic customs and rites. Their synagogues used traditional prayer books, promoted the celebration of Jewish holidays, established mikvahs, acquired Passover provisions, and arranged for cemetery land and burial services. While many of these Sephardic immigrants did not maintain halakha in their daily regimen as did their European counterparts, they set a public standard of compliance with Jewish law, thus honoring Jewish tradition. Further immigration of thousands of Jews from Western and Central Europe in the middle of the 19th century brought a world of traditional piety and extensive Jewish learning to America, exemplified by Rabbi Abraham Rice, who served in Baltimore, and Yissachar Dov (Bernard) Illowy, who served communities from Philadelphia to New Orleans. Such men marked the beginning of a learned and scholarly rabbinate in America. This volume provides valuable biographical insights regarding some of the most notable religious leaders in American Orthodoxy.
