Awful .......2005-01-23

Just finished Schultz's and Trenerry's "Abandoned by Lincoln" which is a study of John Pope. Awful. Simply awful. In the biographical note of Wallace Schultz itis noted "Pope has been his passion." Alas, this becomes clear in the book as even Second Bull Run is considered a success since the army lived to fight another day. By that logic Lee's Gettysburg campaign was a tremendous victory and so was Burnside's campaign at Fredericksburg.

The book casts Pope in a positive light (while admitting to his failings as a man which is odd since the authors also continue to insist that evidence reveals little about Pope's personal life). Everyone else-McClellan, Fitz John Porter, Halleck, Lincoln, Stanton - comes under heavy fire.

The authors trash Lincoln for abandoning Pope. They credit Pope with great political skills and note that his father in law was an influential Congressman from Ohio and that Chase in particular seemed to want to advance Pope's career. I think Pope had great political connections but that does not mean he had great political skills. Chase seems more guilty of abandoning Pope than Lincoln did since right after Sharpsburg he found a new general to champion, Joe Hooker, who was recuperating from a foot wound in Washington. While Lincoln knew Pope and had been close to Pope's father, I think it is fair to say the President was forced to abandon Pope.

One episode seems to capture the flaws of the book. The authors note that Pope's scathing report on Second Bull Run was released on Sept. 8, 1862 in the New York Times, a day after Pope left DC for Minnesota. This report essentially blames Franklin, Porter and McClellan for the defeat at Second Bull Run. Stanton, Lincoln and Halleck, who had seen Pope's report before it was released, refused to publish it since it was so scathing, the facts were not all in, and McClellan, who Pope takes to task, was commanding Washington's defenses in one of the most pivotal moments of the war. It is not going out on a limb to think that the politically connected Pope, the son of one of a leading Whig in Illinois, the son in law of a Congressman, who had spent the summer of 1862 basking in the glow of the Republicans in Washington, leaked the report to restore his reputation. In a Cabinet meeting on Sept 12, according to the diary of Gideon Welles, Lincoln came out and said exactly that while Monty Blair argued that Pope was useless against, of all people, the rather inconsequential Caleb Smith who thought Pope still had some merits. It's not unreasonable for Lincoln to have dumped Pope overboard after having leaked the report, undermining the commander of the army which was defending the North against Lee's invading army.

Somehow the authors miss this. They comment sympathetically on Pope's harsh views of Lincoln and Halleck. They even note at one point that Halleck was something of a protégé of Pope which is just absurd. Halleck, for all his faults, was much savvier than Pope at political infighting, had a greater reputation before the war, and held more important command during the war.

But why stop at Halleck ? The way the authors make Pope out he was a mixture of Caesar and Washington:

"He seems to have had every good quality, including an unfounded trust in subordinates and an unrewarded faith in the democratic government that handled him roughly. In the end he lacked the deviousness that went with success."

Huh ? How the hell does a trust, even if unfounded, on such inept commanders as say Banks and Siegel (two of Pope's corps commanders) rank as a good quality ? And Pope was plenty devious, as Lincoln and Blair noted at the 9-12-1862 Cabinet meeting. The authors chronicle Pope playing his political connections before, during and after the war but somehow that is not devious. They note that he was willing to blame subordinates for his defeats, trample on treaties made with Indians, and even call President Buchanan a traitor and an imbecile in a public lecture WHILE STILL IN THE ARMY WHEN BUCHANAN WAS PRESDIENT, not to mention studiously avoiding the chain of command by going over his superior's heads when he was in the Topographical Engineers before the war but don't worry, the authors reassure the reader, Pope was not devious.

I'm forced to tackle Peter Cozzens' book on Pope as well as his memoirs to get a better take on this important commander. Unless you want to read a warning on what happens when a historian gets too emotionally involved with his subject, I would suggest avoiding "Abandoned by Lincoln" as much as possible.

Decent-Good for what it's worth, but far from complete........2007-03-02

I am giving Mr. Steinberg Four Stars for his good work.

Mr Steinberg says in his introduction that he regrets omissions, but does not intend to apologize for anything he DID include. Well, if I were him I would retract that; as I will show, he makes some inclusions that are hardly earth-shattering.

He omits Berlioz's Te Deum (one of the works he regrets leaving out), yet he includes several of the smaller Brahms works! I'm not anti-Brahms or anything, but why would you leave out a work like the Berlioz Te Deum in the first place? And however interesting it may be, why include the Mozart-Handel Messiah? If Mr. Steinberg had chucked out that work, the smaller Mozart and Brahms pieces, he would have had space to include Berlioz, Bruckner, Poulenc, Monteverdi, and at least one more Haydn mass, the "Nelson", which is the work he should have included.
There are several great settings of the "Gloria" by Antonio Vivaldi which are wonderful, though I don't say Steinberg should have done all of them. I would have suggested Vivaldi's "Dixit Dominus". Poulenc's "Gloria" is also a wonderful work which deserved to be included, as did Dvorak's Requiem...whatever George Bernard Shaw's opinion of it may have been.

One of the most unforgiveable omissions was Monteverdi's "Vespro della Beata Vergine", but of course Mr. Steinberg doesn't apologize for it's omission like he did for obscure Pfitzner, Gerhard and [less obscure] Delius. A work like Monteverdi's Vespers, even though it is a collection of pieces, is now accepted as one of the greatest choral works.

As I see it, to choose the right works for a book like this, what you do is choose ONE work by each major composer until you have all the big guys covered. Then you expand the amount of works by some of them. In Bach's case, obviously the two Passions should be included in addition to the Mass in B minor. In Berlioz's case, you would expand to include the Te Deum....and so on.
In this book, Steinberg includes "Genesis" by Wuorinen, "Lilacs in the Dooryard Bloom'd" by Roger Sessions, and what I think is an excessive amount of Stravinsky: the Requiem Canticles, Symphony of Psalms, Mass, Sacred Canticle, Persephone, and The Wedding. I am in no way wondering why Stravinsky is represented. Obviously he should be. But six works by Stravinsky, and only one of Haydn's Masses? This is a VERY unbalanced book in terms of the choices of works to explore.

But enough criticism. Let's go over the real positives of this book. Now, the actual exploring of the pieces is very good. It is very hard to talk/comment on music without being either too technical, or too rhapsodic and reminscing. Steinberg strikes the balance perfectly. He stars out most often by interesting you with his anecdotes. When he goes into detail describing the actual music, he is careful to stick to 'regular people language', even still those areas are a bit sticky for the lay listener. He uses notated musical examples often enough, which make this book more than just a regular read for those who know their music theory.

When Mr. Steinberg gets to do an "update" for his book, I expect to see a far wiser inclusion of great works.

This book is for anyone who wants to re-live a special place.......2004-11-23

The last thing I wanted to do was read a book about someone else's vacation. But to my surprise it wasn't anything like that. The author did a great job of sucking me into the book. I was re-living memories from my childhood and adulthood of special places and times. I laughed and I cried...I swear the author followed my family on vacation. His writing style was both funny and at times somber. The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is because the book ended and I wanted to keep on reading. For me, it was very theraputic to read this book, especially in today's hectic life style. I was able to sink into a book that a reader could relate to on a personal level and take a trip down memory lane.
