Although this book does not go into great depth about the subject, it is well written and will leave the reader longing to make a trip to the lake. The author presents the controversy about the damn in a well balanced manner and keeps the focus of the book on the existing treasures of the lake.

this book is exemplary of an aristocratic book that has no tangible value for anyone who reads it. As a Financial Analyst I found some of the reading very dull and and unrelated to the topic of financial analysis.

Practical Handbook.......2001-06-08

I bought this handbook based on a review by another customer. I found it to fit my purpose and I'm glad to had made the purchase. The handbook is a practical source guide for financial analysts. It is not another academic regurgation found in other texts. The author, Vincent Muro, had brought his diverse experience, knowledge & innovativeness to bear in this practical guidebook for the busy financial practitioner who could use it as a constant reference guide. The text blends well the theory with the practice and offered numerous illustrations. The charts & diagrams in the front & back cover as well as in the text itself puts into perspective how the various financial analysis techniques could be applied. Apart from the traditional techniques, new measures & analytic were offered as well, making this handbook a must-have & a good buy. I think this handbook should have a quick summary at end of each chapters and probably should make use more of visual aids for the busy practitioner, which would make it even better. Nevertheless is deserves a 5-star rating !!!

Useful corporate finance.......1999-04-02

I am happy to have found a book like this. Its explanations have a surgical precission and are superbly structured, leading you to very sofisticated financial analysis tools with easiness. It is completely useful for the professional and the student who want and need to learn about corporate finance with the maximum rigour and depth but also want to avoid losing time in unpractical stuff. I wish I had discovered this book before!!

A True Bible of Risk Management.......2005-04-08

Having worked on several risk management projects on Wall Street for years, I must admit that this is the best and most comprehensive book on the topic. It covers all the main areas of risk management (market, credit, operational) and saves you countless hours of looking for definitions and derivations of key risk management concepts (not everything is on Google, or at least not yet).

Disappointing.......2003-07-31

This book is billed as the "official reference book for GARP's FRM certification program" and "ideal for self instruction and in-house training".

Unfortunately, it falls short on both scores. It is definitely not a book for someone with a basic level of knowledge. Nor does it really seem to be written for the intermediate risk manager/practitioner.

Dr. Jorion undertook a rather ambitious and perhaps thankless task with this book. The subject is quite extensive. There is probably no one person with all the required in-depth knowledge to write the entire book. So there were bound to be areas of weakness. It also appears that he had scant assistance with the book, which placed an enormous burden on him.

As well, the book lacks a consistent pedagogical focus. It is not pitched to the basic student or to the intermediate level practitioner but seems to wander between the two. And therefore is probably not an ideal text for either audience.

If it is intended as a textbook for in-house training or preparation for the FRM exam, then it should be written at a much more basic level with careful ordering of the presentation of the material and fuller explanations rather than the text's at times elliptical and terse ones. For an example of a shortcoming in presentation, in the section on option pricing, the book discusses the Merton derivation (for income generating "underlyings") of the Black Scholes model and then presents a detailed example of the Black Scholes model. It would be more helpful to reverse the order and go from the simpler to the more complex.

Other areas for improvement are the section on statistics, probability, etc. These are at the heart of modern risk management. Sometimes the descriptions seem too terse to convey the material. The tables on the "moments" could be improved by including the denominator to show the exact formula for their calculation.

Notwithstanding the above, there is some very good material in the book - thematic comments on risk management and interactions between various risks and instruments. This "big picture" analysis is good. The discussion of "moments" is well organized though there is a shortcoming in the tables - the denominators are missing and so the student doesn't see the exact formula for each. However, as outlined above, without more detail and more structured presentation, the book's utility for the basic level student is diminished.

One would expect to see more evidence of a strong editor's hand from a book published under Wiley Finance imprint. It is a little acknowledged fact that most authors rely on an editor to catch mistakes and to ensure that the book stays on message. The author's task is even more daunting when preparing such a technical book. And the editor's role then even more critical.

There are some obvious errors in the book. For example, missing information in the sample question 11.4 on page 254. Poor spacing in the answer key to that question on page 260- where the square root of time and the 99% standard deviation factors are conflated. As well, the explanation of the solution could have been expanded to explain exactly what these factors represented and why they were used. This is very important in a basic training book. Also there are several extraneous words between two sentences on the top of page 291. These and others not mentioned here seem to be obvious catches.

Since the subject matter is so extensive and since this is a GARP official publication, GARP should consider enlisting several authors, each of whom could address areas of his/her expertise. Dr. Jorion then could serve as the senior author - providing the logical architecture to link sections together and highlight critical dependencies and linkages. That would improve the book materially.

Although collections of Matthew Brady's work abound, most are targeted at adults or armchair war historians. The American War Between the States was the FIRST war that civilians could "follow from home" and the first to be photographed. This book brings the war out of dry history books and into harsh reality for young readers. Nice addition to a buff's library as well.

A Gratifying Read.......2004-09-15

"Sometimes Rhythm, Sometimes Blues" is a collection of charming, poignant, honest, and unadorned relationship essays. It is as if Ms. Smith was given access to the personal journals of the featured authors, and then assembled some of their most heartfelt thoughts and secrets to create this book.

Though the works are said to focus on relationships from the African American perspective, I found it very refreshing that I could relate to these stories from many viewpoints - as a woman (smart, sometimes silly, strong, sometimes vulnerable, resolute, sometimes uncertain..), a a daughter, an ex-girlfriend, etc...

I truly enjoyed this book and have even bought additional copies to give as gifts!

Very sincere and intriguing read.......2004-08-13

I found this book to be very helpful. It was good to read these stories of various black women and their experiences with love and relationships. It is not a book bashing men; it is a collection of heart-felt work from everyday women with vivid stories. I think if we as black men take the time to listen to our women, everything would be much better. Hopefully, sisters won't give up on all black men, because all of us are not knuckleheads even though it may seem like it. Ms. Smith also gave brothers an opportunity to write a few pieces which brings the book a tremendous balance. I recommend this to anyone who has an open mind and is willing to pay attention. I'll be looking out for anything else Ms. Smith puts out.

Run, Don't Walk..........2004-03-10

To pick up what is undoubetdly one of the strongest works in it's genre in a long time! This book is a thoughtful, witty, insightful and most of all, a TRULY MOVING, exploration of modern love and relationships. These writers go beyond trite surveys of a lost love or an unrequited crush. They paint truly vivid portraits of 1.)what it means to have a loved one die, 2.)toying with the idea of dating outside of your race and 3.)how tough love can be when there is a class difference between two partners, among many other topics. These writers are to be truly commended for allowing readers to glimpse some of the most deeply personal moments of their lives.

A Must-Read!.......2004-02-26

I heard about this book and couldn't wait to pick it up. It really should be required reading for anyone hoping to develop a lasting, loving relationship. For the first time, real life stories of love and loss have been compiled into one, action packed book. The "Talking Back," section features five incredible essays by black men including Kevin Powell and Victor LaValle...the men in this book write openly and honestly and its a great way to find out what Black men are really thinking. I strongly reccommend this book!

It's About Time!.......2004-02-24

This book is excellent! Finally, a book that speaks on relationships from the African American perspective and experience. I was hooked from the very first page. One of my favorites was the essay written by Kiini Ibura Salaam. It's called, "When Conception Equals Confusion..." This is a wonderful essay that discusses the unfortunate issue of paternity testing and what a single black mother and her child or children must endure from conception to the doctor's office.

Tracy L. Ruffin's essay, "Marriage: The Unfulfilled Prophecy" was so on point, I felt as though someone had broken into my home and read my journals. It was very comforting to know and feel that I am not alone in all my dating experiences and the pressure that is sometimes placed on us women to get married.

But what I think makes this book such a wonderful anthology, is the fact that editor, Taigi Smith included a talking back section for the brothers. This enables us to get the male point of view. I thought Richard Symister's "Wilderness 101" should be mandatory reading for all men.

Overall, this is just a great anthology and an excellent read!
