Not impressed.......2006-08-08

This book was very disappointing; I expected more from Fodor's. The paper is that pulpy newspaper stuff, the type is too small, and the font isn't easy to read either.

It's actually got too much information, I think, in that it's difficult to wade through everything they stuff in there. They should have split it up into island-specific guides.

There are only a scant few items with a "Fodor's Choice" star by it. But they never say WHY it's a good choice. What does a star rating entail? What qualifies them for selection? They just say their staff found it to be "the very best." No further detail as to what amenities or features earned them that designation.

There are no photos. Their maps are all in black and orange, and everything looks dingy that way.

Their sample itineraries are not appealing. They're too busy and spread out.

It's important to understand that different people have different needs and expectations from a guidebook; this one just didn't suit mine. It has lots of info, so if you really want to pore over every little thing, and you can concentrate on those big chunks of text in that little type on those dingy pages, then you might like it. Me, I'm going to keep looking.

Top - Rate.......2004-03-23

This travel book is excellent. The best thing about the Fodor's series is that they give you great ideas of what to do with your days traveling around places. Obviously this one deals with Hawaii, and it deals with it quite well.

Places to eat, places to sleep, places to surf, this book has it all and the information is easily accessible to the layman who does not know Hawaii very well.

I am very impressed with Fodor's and this version in particular.

Shocking, silly, stupid, scandalous. With a subject like Celebrity Tantrums, who needs fiction? This book is well researched and thoroughly entertaining. The author's playful sense of humour makes even the most obnoxious celeb an entertaining subject. A great read!

Glorious gossip!.......2003-05-09

I don't trust anyone who says they don't like gossip. It's just not normal. For the rest of us, the vast majority who take secret pleasure in the titilating faux pas of the rich and famous - Lisa Brandt has something for you! Celebrity Tantrums is the most entertaining read you're gonna find - without having to delve into the "adults-only" section anyway! So many stories of how stars get away with the most unusual (and down right naughty) behaviour. I don't know where the author dug all this stuff up from? Either she's a genius at research, or perhaps she has celebrity stalking issues?
If you want to be the hit of your next social engagement, this is a must have. Finally, a book that's as entertaining as any prime-time celebrity gossip show on network televison. Whether you read it all at once, or pick your favourite star's story first, you will eat up every juicy detail from each one of these sordid moments in lives of Hollywood's elite. Lisa has uncovered events that must be certainly turning the hair of the celebrity PR folks gray.

Great Idea Book.......2006-03-10

This is one of a series of books published by teNeues that are really idea books on how the best of things are being designed right now. The hotels described here are not the normal Motel 6's in either amenities, or (I suspect) room rate. They range across the world from Europe to Asia, South Africa, and both North and South America.

Golf is featured at all of these places, but the non-golfer would not find himself out of place visiting any of them. They all have every feature you could possibly expect of a Luxury Hotel. These hotels offer a lot more than simply a place to put ones head down for the night.

The book is of large format, profusely illustrated with color photographs and printed using a very high quality printing process on very good paper. Anyone looking to design such a hotel, or even looking for a high end business entertaining location can find a lot of good inspiration in this book.

A Great Primer!.......2001-05-15

The New Grove Beethoven is one of a series of biographies on great composers. The text was originally written in the 1970's.

I used this book during an upper division class on Beethoven at UCLA, and I loved it. Why? Because I knew nothing about music, but I loved Beethoven's music. What is refreshing about this book is that it will provide a background on the life of Beethoven that is wholly understandable even if you don't have a music background.

This book is a little over 150 pages of text. The remainder is notes etc. It reads very quick. The book is largely broken up into chronoligical sections and ends with a quick breakdown of Beethoven's music and his impact on music.

The New Grove Beethoven does a great job of delving into Beethoven's frustration with the onset of deafness and how he felt estranged from society as a result. It also treats Beethoven's deep desire to be respected as this desire continually butted up against his dislike for preferential treatment to nobility as "superiors." In short, he wanted to be like them, loved like them but his attitude estranged him from them.

If you are looking for a quick primer on Beethoven that is readable and quite enjoyable, pick up the New Grove Beethoven!

Most Historically Accurate Info.......2000-04-30

This book is being used in my music class at Dartmouth College that's focusing on Beethoven. It contains very accurate information about the Maestro himself and does not add to the myths about the composer as other books do. It's very easy to read and there's a lot of satisfaction and knowledge that a Beethoven admirer can gain from this magnificent biography.

Outstandiing semi-hard to find book. Talese does a wonderful job of bringing to life the world of ironwork "Boomers" who built the Verrazano Narrows Bridge. I recommend it to all who would like to learn more about the men (few women) who build our towers of capitalism and the country's infrastructure.

The Bridge - severing connections with the working class.......2007-03-05

I confess to having enjoyed this book, but correctives are absolutely necessary....

In his Pulitzer prize winning "The Power Broker," Robert Caro (1974) inferred that mover/shaker Robert Moses needlessly destroyed homes to build highways. With all but the rich and powerful, Moses was able to easily bulldoze opposing positions and properties. Simultaneously, metropolitan NYC's mass transit infrastructure was seriously neglected.

Suggesting that he saw them as monuments to himself, Caro also maintained that Moses coveted bridges, while detesting tunnels. He detailed how Moses was able to politically sabotage the car/train tunnel between Brooklyn and Staten Island, which had been started before World War II.

Recalling the already existing Third Avenue route of the Gowanus Expressway, crossing the Narrows through railroad yards at 62nd Street (en route to similar railroad yards in St. George) would seem to have been far more logical route than cutting a swathe through Bay Ridge, en route to Fort Hamilton. While eliminating the need to destroy homes, however, the resultant bridge would have been in a far less dramatic spot, than the entrance to NY Harbor.

Gay Talese appears to share Moses' insensitivity toward working class victims. Looking back in the mid 1960s, he noted that although "the eight hundred buildings that stood in the path of the bridge's approachways had now all disappeared, many people had long memories and they still hated the bridge. Monsignor Edward J. Sweeney, whose parish at St. Ephrem's had lost two thousand of its twelve thousand parishioners, thus diminishing the Sunday collection considerably, still became enraged at the mere mention of the bridge" (p. 116). My aunt, uncle & cousins constituted 8 of Msgr. Sweeney's 2000 displaced parishioners. In that era, 2000 displaced parishioners meant 250 displaced single income families. With a free parish school that was still unable to accommodate all its children, Msgr. Sweeney's advocacy for his parishioners was absolutely not based on financial self-interest.

While Moses may have bulldozed opposition and homes, Talese's specialty seems to be bulldozing reputations.

In the interest of disclosure, I was one of the altar boys at Msgr. Sweeney's funeral, somewhere around 1970.

The Best of New Journalism.......2006-12-02

There are more famous titles linked to the New Journalism genre, but none better than this captures the craft. Each page encapsulates days of reporting and note taking. You'll get caught up in the story because the characters are so compelling, but never forget to remind yourself that every detail on every page is true.

Brilliant. A whole new perspective on 'The Verrazano'........2006-10-06

I was born in Brooklyn, and have always had a unique relationship with the Verrazano Bridge. It started when I was a young boy and my father and mother would drive over the bridge en route to my aunt and uncle's home in Staten Island, with me in the back seat of the car ... looking down in fear at the deep dark water below. That fear continued thru my early years, as at times I would feel the wind sway the car across the roadway as my eyes stayed focused on the marvel of construction that was the building of the Twin Toweres. Yet the Verrazano opened up a new world to me . . . funny, I considered my travel to the fifth borough to be a trip to the rustic countryside! How things have changed.

Gay Talese is one of New York's most prolfic writers, and I am a fan of Mr. Talese and applaude Mr. Davidison in their work in this insightful and enjoyable historical tale of the building of The Verrazano Bridge. It was with great interest that I learned the details of the political issues involved with the building of the bridge, and how the bridge essentially created two of New York's most beloved neighborhoods: Bay Ridge and Bensonhurst. I consider myself a lover of bridges, especially New York bridges. Yet I always seemed to feel, thru my love affair with the Verrazano, that there was something missing -- a walkway similiar to the Golden Gate Bridge or the Brooklyn Bridge. After reading 'The Bridge: The Building of the Verrazona-Narrows Bridge' I have a sense that this wonderful bridge that is the longest bridge in North America, and the sixth largest in the world is not a bridge for pedistrians and is in fact 'perfect'.

The insights and tales of the lives of the workers who built the bridge: a migrant work force made of courageous ironworkers: from native north american indians to newly arrived immigrants who traveled from one bridge project to another was extraordinary. It is in the understanding of their lives that Talese and Davidison re-create a time capsule that brings you back over forty years ago to a time when the New York skyline and all that has come to be was in the creation period. Wonderfully done.

A few gems here among the essays and companion CD.......2006-07-30

I was given this book/cd combination as a gift by a well-intentioned friend after I had recovered from a long illness. It's an ambitious project - attempting to inspire and comfort through a compendium of essays on mortality, grief, healing, illness, ritual, etc., and through a CD of original compositions that address these same themes. The individual pieces don't always measure up to the project's big intentions. Some fall flat. The tone of the collection is wide-ranging -- some pieces are light, some sad. There are a few stand-outs that I have turned to more than once. Among the essays, a piece by Diane Arieff (who is also the book's editor) is smart, moving and wise. Another essay by Robin Kramer is also beautifully written. Another piece, by a woman whose name escapes me, is also very haunting - as it describes the brutal murder of her young son and his classmate, and her efforts since that tragedy to find meaning in such a cruel, arbitrary event. Among the musical selections, the performances of Alberto Mizrahi, Neshama Carlebach and Debbie Friedman are the stand-outs.

I recommend it.

I am not as eloquent as some others who have provided their perspectives, but I wanted to share my thoughts on this great book and author nonetheless. I live in NYC but grew up in Champaign, IL recognizing that Rabbi Neuman was and is a very bright and strong-willed man who packs great wisdom into relatively few words. But only after reading this book, and the brutality and hardships he faced, obstacles so great they are hard for most of us to even fathom, could I, or most anyone, fully appreciate the depth of his strength and courage. I have read very good books that more fully illustrate the details of the day-to-day murder and brutality (books such as Ordinary Men and Treblinka), but Rabbi Neuman makes it clear that not only were numerous innocent people murdered, but many wonderful communities and ways of life were forever destroyed. And yet, he, like many others, found the strength to move beyond the worst event in human history in order to make a difference and help others. This is among the must read books for anyone who wants to understand what was lost, particularly in Poland, in the genocide and devastation of the holocaust, all the while getting to learn about the courage and strength of survivors like Rabbi Isaac Neuman. Thank you for everything Rabbi Neuman!

The Story is told in a calm and matter of fact manner, leaving the adjectives describing the German brutality to the mind of the reader. Thus, the reader can get a much broader picture of the times without getting hung up with anger at specific transgressions. Most everyone would enjoy this book, but especially anyone who is old enough to remember the time when all this was happening.

In the Narrow Bridge: Beyond the Holocaust, Isaac Neuman set himself the most of difficult of tasks to write the "silent song of my vanished people.

He succeeds so well in invoking the presence of those who are absent that this reader feels as if he had sat at the study table of Reb Mendel as he taught a page of Talmud and told ancient stories that echo again and again the most contemporary of wisdom. The memoir is passionate and deep, religious in its intensity, and yet so very compassionate in its understanding.

Isaac Neuman makes the characters of his past come alive. We gain an insight into the world that ways and is no longer. We learn the streets of his beloved cities and its courtyards, more importantly we are privileged to enter the inner lives of its inhabitants. Unlike most Holocaust memoirs, which are most intense in their portrayal of the evil the survivors experienced, Neuman is most passionate about the past that has vanished and most successful at calling it forth.

Religious Jews will hear the echoes of Jewish legends in the last moments of minyan of martyrs who accepted their decree with dignity and had more faith in the divine that a God present in the Holocaust could ever possibly merit. Secular readers will read of Passover in the camps and glimpse the power of tradition to speak forth even in the most atrocious of circumstances. They will experience the consolation of the invocation of a miraculous, redemptive past in a world without miracles, without hope.

This lyrical work will touch the soul. One laughs, one cries, one mourns and indeed one even celebrates. Restrained prose glisten with insight. The work is deep, passionate, charming -- and ever so welcome.

The Breslow teacher Chaim Kramer has in this work tried to distill the practical wisdom of Rebbe Nachman. The chapters are: Simplicity, Joy, The Good Points, Truth, Faith, Torah and Prayer, Torah Study, Prayer, Hitbodedut, Peace, Day and Night, Daily Needs, In the Home, Earning a Living, Charity.The Seven Candles, Tzaddik, Rosh Hoshanah, Eretz Yisrael. The Holy Land, You Can Too.
The book is a compilation of teachings and often there is a choppiness to it. But there is a great deal of inspirational teaching here .
Here is a citation of one teaching of many, many.

"When we have faith , then our livelihood is like receiving manna from Heaven- we can rely on Heaven to send it to us.This way, we are content with whatever we receive, and have no desire for more and more.Conversely, when a person does desire more than what he is given, he destroys his whole life with the desire for wealth, for there is no manna in that. ( Likutey Halakhot, Netilat Yadayim li'Seudah 6:85)"

As this little excerpt illustrates "Advice is Wise only when it is wisely taken." There is also of course a temptation to interpret such a verse in a way which would free oneself from the need to make any effort at a livelihood. I may be wrong, but I don't think Rebbe Nachman is saying this.
In any case I wish that the reader will have the Siyata d'Sheminyah to read wisely even the wisest of works.

One of the Most Inspirational Books.......2005-05-17

"Crossing the Narrow Bridge" is truly one of the most inspirational books I have read. I am baal teshuvah for many years and find this book as important now as when I first began the journey. It is well written and conveys a tremendous amount. The book will definitely make you think. One of its greatest feats is demonstrating the luminous beauty of Torah Judaism. Whether you are just investigating a Torah life or are frum from birth, this book has something for everybody.

Hasidism with heart!.......1999-12-03

You don't have to be Hasidic to get a lot out of this book! It dispells forever the stereotype of Hasidic Jews as "letter of the Law." This book reveals the heart behind many Hasidic/Orthodox practices, helping any Jew to start where s/he is at and move forward at his/her own pace toward greater lov of God.

The title comes from the famous quote by Rebbe Nachman of Breslov: "All the world is just a narrow bridge, but the main thing is not to fear at all." Rabbi Kramer tells us how to cross that bridge to greater faith. He explains the heart of daily Hasidic practice in plain, use-friendly language, too. The chapters are arranged by topic, so you can read the book from cover-to-cover, or start with the areas that most interest you. Highly recommended!

Soul with its boots on !.......1999-07-02

I've probably read more than most people have on the teachings of Rebbe Nachman of Breslov, and I definitely consider this book to be the most comprehensive, well organized, and practical introduction to the topic. It presents even the deepest concepts with surprising clarity and delivers them right to the heart. I discovered "Bridge" about eight years ago, and it literally became a bridge for me over all kinds of turbulent life situations. I've given it as a gift many times and if I could award it ten stars instead of five, I would. Chaim Kramer's comfortable, straight-forward style is full of warmth and humor. This book definitely has become one of my most cherished "friends".
