Carpenter's Gothic (Penguin Twentieth-Century Classics)
William Gaddis Manufacturer: Penguin Classics ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0141182229 |
Book Description
This story of raging comedy and despair centers on the tempestuous marriage of an heiress and a Vietnam veteran. From their "carpenter gothic" rented house, Paul sets himself up as a media consultant for Reverend Ude, an evangelist mounting a grand crusade that conveniently suits a mining combine bidding to take over an ore strike on the site of Ude's African mission. At the still center of the breakneck action--revealed in Gaddis's inimitable virtuoso dialoge--is Paul's wife, Liz, and over it all looms the shadowy figure of McCandless, a geologist from whom Paul and Liz rent their house. As Paul mishandles the situation, his wife takes the geologist to her bed and a fire and aborted assassination occur; Ude issues a call to arms as harrowing as any Jeremiad--and Armageddon comes rapidly closer. Displaying Gaddis's inimitable virtuoso dialogue, and his startling treatments of violence and sexuality, Carpenter's Gothic "shows again that Gaddis is among the first rank of contemporary American writers" (Malcolm Bradbury, The Washington Post Book World).Customer Reviews:
Talk, talk, it's all talk.......2006-07-17
a pretentious criminal atrocity.......2003-09-27
it is written in a style that is quite difficult to read, which is fine with me, but afterward you question why you wasted all the effort and concentration in reading when the book wasn't worth it anyway.
the only good plus i can see in this book is if you want to read it, and pretend you like it, just so you can discuss it in a pretentious book group and get with a pretentious girl or boy. other than that it really has no value.
Not his best work.......2002-10-26

Transformational Learning: Renewing Your Company Through Knowledge and Skills
Daniel R. Tobin Manufacturer: Wiley ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0471132896 |
Book Description
In their headlong rush to transform themselves to meet the challenges of global competition, companies have invested millions in new technologies and grand reengineering schemes. In all too many cases, the outcomes have been smaller, disgruntled staffs and, from a competitive standpoint, business as usual, or worse. As Daniel R. Tobin demonstrates in this groundbreaking book, while technology may help to facilitate change, change always originates with people. That's why today's most successful businesses are those in which individuals at every level—from the mailroom to the executive suite—are committed to acquiring new knowledge and skills that will help their company win the battle for market share. While the concept of the learning organization is not new—it has been a major theme in corporate America ever since Peter Senge's 1990 classic The Fifth Discipline—until now, no single source provided the tools needed to translate that vision into everyday reality. The first nuts-and-bolts guide to building a learning organization, Transformational Learning supplies step-by-step guidance and the tools you need to put learning organization concepts into daily practice. You'll learn how to align your group's learning initiatives with long-range company goals, develop a renewable learning system, measure the group's learning "vital signs," develop partnerships with key leaders throughout the organization, and much more. And with the help of many instructive and inspiring case studies from major North American and international companies, including Corning, PPG, Amoco, and Sun Microsystems, you'll discover how real people have successfully implemented transformational learning principles to help their organizations bounce back from crises, sustain and magnify successes, and forge a powerful new competitive edge.
Drawing upon more than 20 years of experience as a leading corporate education expert, Tobin also introduces an array of original tools and techniques that have yielded remarkable results in case after case. He describes a dynamic new model that helps companies maximize the capture and use of crucial information. He details a revolutionary approach to benchmarking that helps you zero in on and exploit the best knowledge and skill resources available both within and outside your company. And he provides a comprehensive new method for building a knowledge network and tying it effectively into your company's transformational goals.
A comprehensive guide to making learning organizational principles a practical reality in your organization, Transformational Learning is a must read for every manager, executive, and team leader.
"The solid linkage Dan Tobin forges between the core value of continuous learning and the never-ending quest for profitability is an essential extension to the idea of the Learning Organization. Small, medium, and large companies can use Tobin's ideas to create a learning strategy that directly supports corporate renewal and long-term growth." —Theodore B. Kinni Founder, The Business Reader
"To survive in this constantly changing new world, a company will have to renew itself many times in its life cycle; the key to renewal will be learning. This book is a must read for both the CEO and the training manager of the company who want to better understand their roles for that life cycle and the attainable future." —Ray Morrison, PhD Administrator, Lockheed Technical Institute
"Transformational Learning focuses people on a vision of what they need to learn to take action and ownership for changing themselves and their jobs. It is the engine that drives people to achieve their company's strategic goals . . . that is what measures the real success or failure of a corporate training function." —Joe Slezak Mercury Marine
"This is the best book I know of that can be used by leaders to build organizational commitment to understanding and achieving excellence." —James R. Marchant Vice President, Human Resources Avenor, Inc.
"Dan Tobin's Transformational Learning: Renewing Your Company Through Knowledge and Skills aids business leaders in understanding how to use information technology, not be victimized by it. I recommend that business leaders expecting to prosper beyond the next five years read this book." —Steven J. Bomba Vice President, Technology Johnson Controls, Inc.
"This immensely readable book can help improve any manufacturer, large or small." —Joan Carvell Vice President California Manufacturing Technology Center

Reengineering Corporate Training: Intellectual Capital and Transfer of Learning
Robert E. Haskell Manufacturer: Quorum Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1567201482 |
Book Description
Haskell emphasizes that traditional, industry-based methods of training are inappropriate, and in fact, unworkable in today's complex, knowledge-based organizations. Instead of simple rote, task-limited, short-run training, organizations must find ways to give their employees thought-based, task-extended, high-performance, and long-run learning. Haskell thus shows that the goal of training is the transfer of learning, and this is not just simple training. What it is, how it works, and how organizations can achieve it are explained in a highly readable, thought-provoking and challenging way. Traditionalists may be skeptical, but Haskell's approach provides a general framework to help understand how to think in terms of learning transfer. His book will be important, compelling reading not only for those in the academic community, but for training and development professionals throughout the public and private sectors. Haskell argues that the training function must be reorganized from the traditional format that most organizations use to one that emphasizes the true acquisition of knowledge. In order to make this change, a fundamental concept--"transfer" of learning--must be understood. Based on a review of 90 years of research as well as his own experiences and findings, Haskell presents a new transfer of learning framework integrating all of the current training systems, mental models, systems archetypes, and generic thinking in the workplace. In doing so he provides the missing instructional foundations for all training and learning, and especially for what have come to be called "learning organizations." He argues that half the $70 billion spent on training in business and industry is wasted, simply because what people are taught in "class" is not transferred to and maintained on the job.

The Persistence of Youth: Oral Testimonies of the Holocaust
Josey G. Fisher Manufacturer: K G Saur Verlag Gmbh & Co ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0887365485 |
Book Description
This volume is a collection of fifteen first-person accounts of growing up during the Nazi era. The selections cover a broad range of personalities and circumstances. Included are testimonies from the daughter of an anti-Nazi German family, the son of a mixed marriage in Germany threatened with deportation, a German Gypsy who witnessed Mengele's experiments, a Polish Jewish girl saved by her teacher, a Prague teenager escaping to Denmark and Sweden, a Polish Jewish youth in communist Siberia, a partisan, an eleven-year-old in Auschwitz, a young Yiddish actress exiled to Tashkent, and a Polish Catholic child deported to work camps. Drawn from the Holocaust Oral History Archive of Gratz College, each testimony is a unique story of survival through defense, adaptation, and resilience. The introduction to the book, written by Professor Nora Levin, provides the historical background of the rise of fascism and Nazism in Germany and the social and political dislocations that ensued. Editor Josey Fisher integrates the testimonies into the framework of adolescent development in the preface. Brief introductions to each chapter set the historical framework and describe the unique set of obstacles challenging each child. "The youth of the Holocaust were caught in the time of their growing. Their external world had real enemies and unspeakable danger at the same time that their physical, psychological, and social development were propelling them toward adulthood. Internal intensity was intertwined with external threat. . . ." (from the preface). Persistence of Youth provides a unique perspective on child development and psychological issues and will be of value to researchers in these fields as well as historians and others concerned with the Holocaust.
