Book Description
Boston, that historical center of colonial charm, splendid parklands, superior universities, and technological development, is an endlessly fascinating place. It is the cauldron, not just of American freedom, but also, arguably, of modern democracy itself. The great names of Boston—Revere, Hancock, Adams, Kennedy, Lodge, O'Neill—are American legends. The stops along the Freedom and the Black Freedom trails are cornerstones of Early American life. Luckily for visitors, this old port city is compact, easily walkable, and eminently photogenic.
Gleaming skyscrapers have asserted their place in the skyline, but Boston seems little changed from the days when Henry David Thoreau dropped in on the Old Corner Bookstore. In this stunning new collection of over one hundred city portraits, renowned photographer Carol M. Highsmith captures the principal historic landmarks from the Old North Church to John F. Kennedy's birthplace in Brookline; neighborhoods from tony Beacon Hill to the eclectic South End; thriving downtown shops and restaurants; the major universities and celebrated museums; and the "Emerald Necklace" of parklands. A lively, information-packed introduction and captions by award-winning writer Ted Landphair offer the perfect complement to Highsmith's outstanding images.
Boston: A Photographic Tour celebrates the enduring elegance of New England's hub city. It is the perfect souvenir of a memorable visit, and the ideal gift for anyone who savors history, unforgettable architecture, cultural vitality, and high-tech innovation—the diversity that is truly Boston.
Customer Reviews:
Boston.......2002-09-01
This is a good book as a souvenir and after having visited Boston six times, I know many of the places photographed and can vividly recall the moments I spent there. There's a detailed introduction looking at all aspects of Bostonian life, including some fabulous old photographs. The rest of the book presents the modern-day town, from the architecture to its people, traditional and contemporary. A lot of the photographs focus on detail, with some good camera angles, but I feel some more general views could have been used to get a better impression of this fantastic town.

Book Description
Interactive Financial Accounting Lab, Version 3, by Smith/Birney offers over 40 hours of exercises and feedback to help students learn financial accounting concepts. This software places the student in an office environment as if they were working for a company. After they complete each exercise they will be promoted and will receive salary adjustments based on their performance. The software provides students with immediate feedback, and allows instructor¿s to monitor the progress of their class on an individual basis. With the introduction of new technology, distance learning courses, and new accounting terminology, our authors met with our users to discuss changes needed to improve this market leading software. These changes will allow us to address the needs of students in the new millennium, and provide instructors with a more flexible product. Some of these changes include more evenly paced modules, the ability to communicate and update exercises via the Internet by students, and a more network friendly interface. In addition to new pedagogical changes, instructor¿s will be excited to see that the managerial aspects of this already powerful software got even better with the inclusion of spreadsheet type data to keep track of student performance throughout the year.

It is what it says it is.......2006-03-21
I had to buy this for a class, I didn't look at any alternatives. This software itself however is basically what you expect from the title, a bunch of accounting exercises. The software interface is a little awkward until you get used to it. Also the "story-line" pretty cheesy. Also it was annoying that this software does not work on apple computers. (Since that is what I use) In the end I think it helped me understand some accounting concepts better so it wasn't a total waste of time.

Lincoln from Primary Sources.......2003-05-31
This book, first published in 1971, presents the life and career of Abraham Lincoln through the pages of the newspapers that covered it. This work is, therefore, essentially a biography written with multiple voices and from differing perspectives by the journalists who watched Lincoln's public life. It contains all of the virtues and vices of the reportorial profession. At times the reprinted articles are eloquent and insightful, at others they present gross inaccuracies and exaggerations. All come together to offer a complex portrait of arguably the most significant president of the American republic. Overall, they offer a fascinating representation of Abraham Lincoln and his times.
Editor Herbert Mitgang makes clear that the individual articles reprinted in this collection should never be considered objective accounts of Lincoln's activities. Instead, the newspapers of that era were overtly partisan. Even a relatively small city like Lincoln's Springfield, Illinois, had two newspapers, one ardently supportive of Lincoln and the Republicans, the other rabidly hostile. And both reported the same events in strikingly different ways. Readers see repeatedly in this collection the differing reportage of events in Lincoln's life. For instance, accounts of the Lincoln-Douglas debates are sensationalized toward one side or the other depending on the political allegiance of the newspaper reporting them. Mitgang appropriately notes that these reports "presented history in the rough" (p. xxiv).
While this collection ranges across the life of Abraham Lincoln, well over two-thirds of the work is devoted to his presidential career and the Union's victory in the Civil War against the Confederacy. Almost every major military action is discussed in some detail, but more importantly the role of Lincoln in reshaping the nation with the abolition of slavery receives considered attention. The struggles to maintain a ruling coalition and to manage both the radicals of Lincoln's own party and the peace Democrats enter the discussion. Of course, the assassination of Lincoln and succession of his vice president to the oval office gains attention.
This is a marvelous entrée for students into the primary sources of history. Newspapers have shaped our understanding of political events since the birth of the nation and this collection goes far toward illuminating the career or Abraham Lincoln. The reports and opinions of journalists show a person and a time in both its ambiguity and complexity. Its availability in this paperback reprint provides excellent grist for students.

Book Description
As a founding member of one of the most influential bands of the past 30 years, Wolfgang Flur played a crucial part in the development of modern music.
Customer Reviews:
The Human Side Of The Man-Machine.......2006-10-11
Wolfgang Flur was a founding member and long-time percussionist for Kraftwerk. Surprisingly - as he writes in I Was A Robot - within the myriad of contracts, he was not an "official" band member in the group started by Ralf Hutter and Florian Schneider-Esleben.
Flur takes the reader through his years with the seminal electronic group, his very strong feelings on how others were mistreated professionally or written entirely out of the band's history and the optimism generated through a variety of projects in the post-Kraftwerk years.
There has been a mysterious cloak of aura - perhaps as metallic as the outer shell of ASIMO, without the programmed human characteristics - surrounding the band almost from its inception. It has increased over the many years of being pathfinders in electronic music, the sporadic tours and recording in anonymity within the confines of their own studio.
Flur's contractual status with the band came back to haunt him personally and professionally after he left the group. There are several quite bizarre moments chronicled by Flur when attempts were apparently concocted by his former bandmates to squelch his public appearances and writings concerning the group.
Flur invented the "Electro-schlagzeug," drum controllers with six metal pads that was played with metal drum sticks. It was a bridge to the analog era - the merging of pop music with electronics - that is taken for granted today.
I Was A Robot will remain an important first-person account of the band at its height of creativity and experimentation.
Kraftwerk: I Was a Robot.......2005-03-19
Flur presents the human side of Kraftwerk and it is not as prestine as one would have thought. Greed, bickering, people filled with self importance and pride line the pages of this very one sided autobiography. The writing style also presents several problems. It is very dry and he jumps all over the place with random dates seemingly. I find that he probably should have had a sterner editor that should have told him to organize the book a bit better since one does feel lost at times and some of the chapters talk about like absolutely nothing which is a "no no" for an author (like when he speculates about conjoned twins). Even so it is an ok autobiography that could have been much better.
For skimming, not reading........2004-03-25
Unfortunately this book is not what I had expected, which was an honest account of the highs and lows of being a member of the ground-breaking quartet called Kraftwerk. It is more like the diary of a teenager who is miffed at his parents.
While there are some interesting passages about the members and the mechanics of Kraftwerk, those are awash in a sea of irrelevant passages about everything from global politics to Flur's speculations on the sex lives of conjoined twins. Two entire chapters chronicle a dream Flur once had.
Flur also seems to see his lack of success after Kraftwerk as a vast conspiracy of some kind. While there was indeed plenty of legal wrangling going on, to take it to the level Flur suggests veers disturbingly close to paranoia.
I was interested in a book about Kraftwerk and its members. What I received was a litany of grievances, tales of sexual conduct (and misconduct - one of Flur's conquests was apparently thirteen years old) and oddball musings.
"I Was A Robot" is more like a blog than a book. At least with a blog you can say you got what you paid for.
the text contributes little to the Kraftwerk story.......2004-02-03
I've been a fan of Kraftwerk for decades now, and part of the allure of the band was always the mystery that surrounded them. Their consistency with putting forth a mannequin-like appearance and robotic rhythms told such a great story on its own. Wolfgang Flur was a member of the quartet during their most exciting and creative period, so his I looked forward to hearing his story.
What I got was a child-like biography, poorly written and revealing in all the wrong ways. He talked little of the equipment and the song-writing procedure, however he was extremely open with information on his love-history and even (I swear this is true) bodily fluids. His narration comes off like a crybaby who in hindsight, thought he deserved more. To be truthful, Flur rarely wrote songs, handed the creative mantle to other members and contributed little aside from filling the 4th Kraftwerk suit and making sure the drum machines fired on time.
This book is less about Kraftwerk and more about Wolfgang Flur. His story *should* be exciting, but it falls flat. Although this book contains some personal photos of Kraftwerk's most interesting period, the text contributes little to the Kraftwerk story.
Wolfgang Fluer proves he's more.......2002-08-09
In case one is not aware, Kraftwerk have been one of the most influential bands in the past 30 years. Every form of music created since the end of the Vietnam War that is decidedly different from "traditional rock and roll" was affected by if not created by this most Fab Vier from the "land of poets and thinkers." I dare say they were more revolutionary than the more notorius Sex Pistols. Contrary to the opinions of some, Kraftwerk didn't actually kill rock and roll as the genre was perceived to be dying as early as 1972, if not earlier; rather they created a blueprint for a new kind of sound which would prevail should the demise of rock and roll actually occur.
Ralf Huetter and Florian Schneider are commonly viewed as the creative nucleus of Kraftwerk as John Lennon and Paul McCartney were to the Beatles or Lou Reed and John Cale were to the (early) Velvet Underground
No slight intended to Huetter and Schneider, but it is Wolgang Fluer, along with another former bandmate, Karl Bartos, who contributed much of the "soul" if you will, to Kraftwerk's sound and added an anchor of accessibility to what could have been an insufferably dry, sterile, sonic environment. Reading Fluer's book, while comparing the Classic Kraftwerk era (Autobahn to Electric Cafe) to the post Fluer/Bartos Mix and Expo, as well as to the early, hard to obtain, "traffic cone" albums, one is left with an appreciation for the contributions for these so-called "lesser" members of Kraftwerk.

Book Description
Bob Stubenrauch is sadly not with us to see Cat Thirteen published. This brave, gentle and patriotic man passed away in 1998. His legacy will live forever. Bob was there, in some of the biggest battles of World War II as a combat photographer in the 6th US Infantry Brigade. He rarely left the front line and was decorated for bravery. CAT13...Combat Assignment Team 13 is the fictional memoir of a corporal as he fights and photographs his way through the killing fields. This book is a startling insight to the hardship, bravery, tragedy and ultimate victory that hundreds of thousands of GI's faced during the years of fighting to free Europe. Every word of every page is a testimony to the endless sacrifice of young men and women in the brutal advance following the invasion of Fortress Europe. The reader is thrown into the daily hell and the humanity of a WWII GI. This is the story of our fathers, our uncles, and our mothers. It is for the reader to decide if it will be the story of our children. War is War, no matter when it is fought, the experiences are the same.
Customer Reviews:
Breathtaking.......2004-11-14
This wonderful, wonderful book left me speechless. It is full of passion and emotion and it is all based on Bob's Stubenrauch's true experiences. What a brave and honourable man he was. A true American hero. DO NOT MISS THIS BOOK
Cat Thirteen.......2004-09-10
This is without a doubt the best book I have ever read about WWII. In fact, it may be the best book I have ever read. I remember so many WWII veterans. This book showed me a side of the war, no one ever shared with me. I was enthralled by each and every chapter. I couldn't put the book down and it has more than 500 pages. And the pictures tell a story of their own. This book should be read by young and old. No one should miss it. It is a gem of a book. Thank God, the author wrote his stories down. A shame if they had died with him. Bob Stubenrauch, bless you.

Lesbian scholar and activist Karla Jay's memoir is rich in sexual detail and family trauma, but may be enjoyed best as a personal history of the turbulent era in which its author came of age. She brings fresh first-hand reports on some of the most pivotal events in the rise of the New Left--from the 1968 student riots at Columbia through the Stonewall riots to the 1970 feminist takeover of the Ladies' Home Journal, which Jay describes as "without a doubt the most successful one-day action taken by the Women's Liberation Movement."
At times nostalgic, at other times clear-eyed and critical, Jay recounts her close involvement with both the Gay Liberation Front and radical feminist groups. In an atmosphere of increasing paranoia (Jay's own phone was tapped, and there is evidence of FBI infiltration of the meetings she attended), she came to terms "with the likelihood that I would spend some part of my life in prison." Enlivened, here and there, by waspish recollections of Rita Mae Brown and other activists, Jay's memoir takes its place beside Jan Clausen's recent Apples and Oranges in tracking the inception of the gay rights movement and the glory days of women's lib. --Regina Marler
Book Description
A fast-paced memoir, serious and hilarious in turn, of the struggles and scandals, politics and personalities that made up the women's and gay liberation movements of the 1960s and '70s
Karla Jay, a direct participant in the dramatic history of the women's and gay liberation movements, brings on stage a dazzling cast of unforgettable characters and gives voice to the sweeping tale of the activists who struggled for their vision of social justice and sexual liberation.
"Karla Jay's intimate account of life in the early years of feminism and gay liberation is as irresistible as a novel, but as credible, humorous, and unexpected as real life." -Gloria Steinem
"A glorious guide to the perplexed seeking the complex, a history that illuminates a way out of passivity and despair." -Tony Kushner
Customer Reviews:
Feminism 101.......2005-10-18
Oh, what a fun read! This is one person's perspective, one person's story. Karla Jay does not claim to speak for all feminists, and it is important that those willing to take the time and energy to write their experience do so -- it is in so doing that herstory manifests. We all have our own perspective on the time in which we live -- just note how many people yell at the TV while watching the news!
I loved reading this book. It helped me to remember my own time during the 60s in which I missed out on much of the fun Ms. Jay experienced, but have certainly benefited from the work she and her cronies did. For that, I am truly grateful.
I loved this book. It captures a sense of "being there" that too many books lack. Her history of family dysfunction is far from uncommon, given the numbers of traumatized children and that trauma, without treatment, tends to be intergenerational. It's part of the story, certainly. After all, isn't Patriarchal madness part and parcel of the history of the world?
Karla Jay chose not to avail herself of therapy. On the other hand, she had access to Academia that escaped me, and it supports her today. I probably have more confusion around that. Interestingly enough, we both managed to live our lives without ever driving a car. I know there are more of us out there!
A great book, again, a fun read. Definitely a "Feminism 101" reader.
Interesting times, but this account lacks introspection.......2000-10-17
I found reading this book a little like looking through a high school yearbook. It has a certain "those were the days, my friends" feel to it. It's interesting mainly because the times were interesting, and it's fun to look back. But it left me wanting something more substantial.
There are details galore about the titillating (sex, drugs, agents provocateurs, etc.). In contrast, there's very little of the emotional candor or 20/20 hindsight one might expect after the passing of thirty years.
In the Epilogue Ms. Jay writes "It is hard for me to explain how the protagonist of this memoir emerged as a tenured full professor ... I am no longer the person at the center of this political autobiography, not even vaguely..."
And that's exactly my problem with the book. Jay offers a chronicle of events -- large and small -- but there's little of the introspection and reflection I expect in a personal memoir.
An accurate celebratory account of very special days........1999-04-19
I shared some, though by no means all, of the exciting times described by Karla Jay in her book. I am very proud to have worked with her on four books, and pleased to remain her friend. This shouldn't disqualify me from recommending this book to friends and stranger alike. The word "liberation" in the title of this book is key. Read this book to find out more about the pioneers of feminism and gay liberation. You'll learn a lot and have a good time. I laughed out loud at some lines I've heard before, and some that were new to me. You'll surely enjoy Karla's humor, too, along with her honesty and compassion for her fellow human beings, male and female.
Fabulous background on early rad-fem and gay-lib.......1999-03-19
Karla Jay gives the most intimate-and politically interesting-view of the early years of radical feminism and gay liberation (roughly 1968-1971) that I've seen. Alongside the moving sketch of her own tragic family, the book gives a close-up view of some of the movements' then-key players, the political thinking of the time, and lots of 1960s-era sex. Very clear-eyed in its political assessments, giving both a sense of how seductive it was to be a 'radical' then-without any excuses for some of the era's whackier ideas. Essential and fabulous background for understanding today's lesbian and gay politics.
Memoir of one woman's journey through turbulent times.......1999-01-23
I was lucky enough to snag a pre-publication copy of Tales of the Lavender Menace. This is Karla Jay's affecting memoir of her transformational journey through the heady early years of the women's and gay liberation movements. Jay writes with courage, humor and complete candor, starting with her difficult family and her student life at Barnard College. Her first-hand experience with political protest and police brutality caused her to begin to question her original values. Consciousness-raising groups, lesbian dances, and a generous helping of sex complete the picture. She does not spare the reader any intimate details, as we learn how she literally re-invented herself, from a middle-class college student to a radical lesbian feminist. Not just a witness to, but also a participant in the rapidly changing history of the sixties and seventies, Jay takes the reader on a hilarious, whirlwind tour of the era. I was amazed at how much detail she remembers. For her, and for the reader, the personal really becomes the political. Buy (do not burn or steal) this very engrossing book; I couldn't put it down.
