5 out of 5 stars An engrossing eyewitness account of the Civil War..........2007-06-09

John B. Jones (1810-1866) was a proslavery Northerner who moved South when the Civil War began. A native of Baltimore, he spent most of his youth and young adulthood on the frontier in Kentucky and Missouri. He eventually made his way back to Baltimore and began a career as a newspaper editor. In the 1850's he lived in New Jersey, where he published and edited the "Southern Monitor", a proslavery newspaper which examined the growing crisis between the North and South from a "Southern Viewpoint". When Abraham Lincoln (whom Jones detested) was elected President in 1860 and several Southern states seceded soon thereafter, Jones decided to move South and give whatever support he could to the new Confederate government. He took his wife and children with him, and he soon found a job as a high-level clerk in the Confederate War Department in Richmond, Virginia, the Confederacy's capital. In essence, Jones became a top assistant to the Confederate Secretary of War, which put him in an excellent position to view the conflict from both the "High Command" perspective and the view of an ordinary government worker and city dweller. In April 1861 Jones decided to start a daily diary describing the historic events taking place around him. He faithfully kept the diary until April 1865, when Richmond fell to Northern troops and the Confederacy was destroyed. Jones died from a sudden illness in February 1866, but his diary survived and has become a classic of its kind. It is often used as a "primary source" document by Civil War historians who want a first-hand, eyewitness account of what it was like to live and work in the Confederacy's capital city during the war. Jones is a good writer, and his diary includes almost every aspect of life in Richmond during the war, from the grand to the mundane. Great battles (and the rumors that often accompany them) are mentioned, the elation of early Southern victories to the despair of knowing that "the cause" was lost by the spring of 1865, the petty infighting and personal jealousies that tore the Confederate government apart - all of these are described in detail by Jones. He offers insightful accounts of Confederate President Jefferson Davis; the hated General Winder, who ineptly handled military rule in Richmond for most of the war; the long-winded and ineffective Confederate Congress; Stonewall Jackson's dramatic funeral in May 1863; and the flight of the Confederate government from Richmond and the burning and looting of the city before Northern troops could arrive and restore order. But Jones also includes "smaller" and more personal details about the growing struggle to simply survive in Richmond as the North's naval blockade cut off necessary supplies of food, medicine, clothing, etc. Rampant inflation, food rationing, overcrowding, starving mobs of women marching through the city demanding food, and a thriving black market are all described by Jones (often in biting and sarcastic detail). To be sure, some things written in this book are offensive (or should be) to modern eyes. Jones is a contradiction - in his diary he emerges as a devoted father and husband who worries about his family's safety and fortunes. Yet he is also an unabashed racist who loathes Jews (and often blames them for everything from food shortages to financial issues, with no evidence to support him), and he supports slavery as the "best method" of dealing with blacks. He claims that slaves are generally well-treated and even boasts that the slaves would prefer their condition to being freed and "left on their own, with no support" by Northern abolitionists. Yet at the end of the diary, as Richmond lies in ruins and the war is lost, Jones seems less bitter than simply exhausted and glad that his family has survived. "A Rebel War Clerk's Diary" is still one of the best first-hand accounts of what it was like to live and work in the Confederacy's national capital by a government "insider", and it should be read by every Civil War buff. Recommended!

5 out of 5 stars An engrossing eyewitness account of the Civil War..........2007-06-05

John B. Jones (1810 - 1866), was a proslavery Northerner who moved South when the Civil War began. A native of Baltimore, he spent much of his youth and young adulthood on the frontier in Kentucky and Missouri. He eventually made his way back to Baltimore and started a career as a newspaper editor. In the 1850's he lived in New Jersey, where he was the editor and publisher of the "Southern Monitor", a proslavery newspaper that promoted the "Southern viewpoint" in the growing crisis between the North and South. When Abraham Lincoln (whom Jones detested) was elected President in 1860 and several Southern states seceded soon thereafter, Jones decided to move South and give whatever support he could to the new Confederate government. He took his wife and children with him; and he soon found a job as a high-level clerk in the Confederate War Department in Richmond, Virginia, the Confederacy's capital. In essence, Jones became a top assistant to the Confederate Secretary of War, and was thus in an excellent position to view the conflict from both the "High Command" perspective and from the view of an ordinary government worker and city dweller. In April 1861 he decided to start a daily diary describing the historic events taking place around him. Jones faithfully kept his diary for the next four years, ending it only after Richmond fell to Northern troops in April 1865 and the Confederacy was destroyed. Jones died from a sudden illness in February 1866, but his diary survived and has become a classic of its kind. It is often used as "primary source" material by Civil War historians who want to get a first-hand, eyewitness account of what it was like to live and work in the Confederacy's national capital during the war. Jones is a good writer, and his diary includes every aspect of life during the war, from the grand to the mundane. Great battles (and the rumors that accompany them) are mentioned, the elation of early Southern victories to the despair that occurred when it was obvious that "the cause" was lost, the petty infighting and personal jealousies that tore the Confederate government apart - all of these are described in detail by Jones. Jones offers insightful accounts of Confederate President Jefferson Davis; the hated General Winder, who ineptly handled military rule in Richmond for most of the war; the long-winded and ineffective Confederate Congress; Stonewall Jackson's dramatic funeral in May 1863; and the flight of the Confederate government from Richmond and the burning and looting of the city before Northern troops could arrive and put out the flames. But Jones also includes more personal and "smaller" details about the growing difficulties of simply trying to survive in Richmond as the North's naval blockade cut off food, medicine, clothes, and other necessary supplies. Rampant inflation, food rationing, overcrowding, starving mobs of women marching through the streets demanding food, and a thriving black market are all described by Jones (often in biting and sarcastic detail). To be sure, some things written in this book are offensive (or should be) to modern eyes. Jones is a contradiction - in his diary he emerges as a devoted father and husband who often worries about his family's safety and fortunes. Yet he is also an unabashed racist who loathes Jews (in the diary he often blames them for food shortages and other problems, even though he has no evidence to support his claims), and supports slavery as the "best method" of dealing with blacks. He claims that slaves are generally well-treated and even boasts that slaves prefer their condition to being freed and "left on their own, with no support" from Northern abolitionists. Yet at the end of the diary, as Richmond lies in ruins and is occupied by the hated "Yankees", Jones seems less bitter than simply exhausted and glad that his own family has survived. "A Rebel War Clerk's Diary" is still one of the best first-hand accounts of what it was like to live and work in the Confederacy's national capital during the Civil War, and it should be read by any Civil War buff. Highly recommended!

I recently used this text during my Menswear Marketing class. Pros: Quick and easy read; most concepts are clearly illustrated in line drawings. Cons: dated material; some concepts (such as personality types) seemed drawn out just to make the book longer. Suggestions: good if you like uncomplicated drawings as opposed to photos; works well if you have a professor to update the text verbally. Since its original publication, Composing a World by Leta E. Miller and Fredric Lieberman has become the definitive work on the prolific California composer Lou Harrison, often cited as one of America's most original and influential figures. Composing a World presents a compelling and deeply human portrait of an exceptionally beloved pioneer in American music.

This paperback edition is an updated version of the highly acclaimed Lou Harrison: Composing a World. The product of extensive research, as well as seventy-five interviews with the composer and those associated with him over half a century, this new edition features an updated works catalog reflecting compositions completed after 1997, adds a brief description of the circumstances of Harrison's death, and corrects a few minor errors. It also includes an annotated works-list detailing more than 300 compositions and a CD featuring over 74 minutes of illustrative Harrison compositions, including several unique and previously unrecorded works.

Extending beyond simple biography, Composing a World includes chapters on music and dance, intonation and tuning, instrument building, music criticism, political activism, homosexuality, and Harrison's Asian influences, among other topics. This indispensable study of Harrison's life and works--currently out of print--will be welcomed back by performing artists, students, and scholars of American music.

"West Coast" composer Lou Harrison (born 1917) is another in a long line of individualist Americans including (primarily) Charles Ives, but also pioneers such as Henry Cowell and Harry Partch. Born in Oregon, Harrison came East after studying with Cowell and was briefly one of Virgil Thomson's stringers on the New York Herald-Tribune, while also editing some of Ives's music. He returned to the West Coast in the early 1950s, where he settled into a life of teaching and composing.

Harrison's love affair with the various musics of Asia began at this time and coincided with his affinity for dance rhythms in his music. With his longtime companion Bill Colvig, Harrison invented many sounding instruments (influenced by those in the Indonesian gamelan), which he employed in his symphonies and other compositions. Harrison's development of a tuning method (which he calls "just tone" in contradistinction to "mean tone" or "equal temperament") has become central to his compositional practice and receives in-depth discussion.

Miller and Lieberman (a musicologist/performer and an ethnomusicologist/composer, respectively) began this book as an oral history, but it evolved into a thoroughgoing study of the music as well as of the man. After a brief biography, there are a variety of discrete chapters (e.g., on dance, tuning, homosexuality, politics) with a plethora of music examples. Harrison's lifelong interest in typefaces is also addressed, with examples given. The book includes a catalog of his works and a CD of excerpts from his compositions.

In the last 10 years or so, Harrison has enjoyed many more performances of his music, and his position as one of the leading American composers of his generation has been solidified. This affectionate volume--if more for the specialist than for the casual listener--is an appropriate tribute. --Patrick J. Smith

                                                  Book Description

Lou Harrison, who celebrated his 80th birthday in 1997, has often been cited as one of the America's most original and influential composers. In addition to his prolific musical output, Harrison is also a skilled painter, calligrapher, essayist, critic, poet, and instrument-builder. During his long and varied career, he has explored dance, Asian music, tuning systems, and universal languages, and has actively championed political causes ranging from pacifism to gay rights. As an articulate and outspoken observer of the contemporary musical scene, he is frequently quoted in the media; yet until now no comprehensive study of his life and works has been published. The present book, supported by extensive archival research and nearly 70 interviews, examines the ideas that have shaped Harrison's creative output, as seen through the eyes of the composer and his his associates. A detailed biographical section is followed by individual chapters focusing on Music and Dance, Intonation and Tuning, Instruments, Asian influences, Gamelan, Music and Politics, Music Criticism, and Compositional Processes. In a separate chapter, the authors describe the historical background of the San Francisco gay community, Harrison's literary and musical statements on gay rights, and possible "gay markers" on his musical style. An annotated works-list details over 300 compositions, and an included CD illustrates the text in sound, including several previously unrecorded works. This engaging study of Harrison's life and works will be indispensible to students and scholars of American music and to performing artists and programmers.

Heartening to see how the authors's cronies have rallied to the defense of this tiresome and mindless random heaping up of information. Nevertheless:

If it were truly a "scholarly" work, I think the author's would have something reasonably intelligent to say about Harrison's acoustical "theories", which were, in fact, to cut to the chase, wack.

If more of the information heaped up were firsthand, this might at least be of some service to real Harrison scholars (if Harrison scholars we must endure). Instead we have, for example, a passage about Harrison's long-term stay at a mental institution lifted directly from John Cage's "Silence". Better to skip this and read the Cage.

5 out of 5 stars Lou Harrison Alive.......2003-12-05

With the death this year of composer Lou Harrison, the West coast lost one of the most inventive and seminal figures who have ever graced its soil. Happily, Harrison's music remains, but, while enormously sensuous and attractive, it is also an enormously complex music--borrowing from the finest of avant-garde American traditions as well as from the East. Harrison has rarely been written about with such sensitivity and understanding as one finds in "Lou Harrison: Composing a World" by his friends Leta E. Miller and Fredric Lieberman. The book also contains a wonderful CD-- itself worth the price of the book--which is a kind of chronicle of Harrison's development. "Lou Harrison: Composing a World" is a marvelous introduction to a great American composer whose work is only now beginning to be understood in its true range. The book is simultaneously excellent biography, fine musical criticism (both authors are musicians), and intelligent, shameless promotion for a great artist whose work deserves no less.

5 out of 5 stars Lou Harrison's stature continue to expand.......2003-11-17

After the release of this volume in Autumn, 1998, I wrote a review that ran in Coast Weekly (see archives, 10/29/98, coastweekly.com) in which I expressed not only admiration toward authors Miller and Lieberman but amazement over the countless other details of Lou's life that I had not previously known. Amazement, because I knew the man for forty years, starting in 1963 when I was a student at San Diego State University and he was touring a program of Chinese music with Richard Dee, a long-time associate. Lou once descibed himself to me as a "glandular optimist," and so he was, in every creative and thoughtful way. His artistic example will continue to influence the music, and other arts in which he excelled, far into the future.

5 out of 5 stars A hard act to follow!.......2003-11-16

In this book, Leta Miller and Fredric Lieberman have given the music-historical community a much-needed (and to be sure, a greatly appreciated) account of a composer who is essential to American art music of this century. Combining biography, aesthetic studies, music analysis and even newly recorded material in a thoughtful and clear manner, Miller and Lieberman have set a standard that later scholars will no doubt find a challenge to equal. Both worked closely with Harrison, yet their work is not a passive recounting of his words; both are trained scholars of contemporary music, yet their prose avoids all needless jargon for the sake of true communication. It is a book of tremendous importance, and has been and continues to be rightly admired by enthusiasts of American and/or contemporary art music. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

There are other sources of information about Lou Harrison, such as "The Music of Lou Harrsion" by Heidi Von Gunden and "The Lou Harrison Reader". There are much better biographies of much better and more significant twentieth-century composers, such as "Gyorgy Ligeti" by Richard Toop. There are much better biographies of colorful American figures associated with twentieth-century music, such as "Woody Guthrie: A Life" by Joe Klein. In short, I don't think we ought to put up with this piece of clumsy mannered hackwork. (By the way, the chapter on Lou Harrison's sexuality is ridiculous and unnecessary: Take him at his word.)

I am reading "Pilgrim Among the Shadows" by Boris Pahor (Orlando, FL, 1995, Harcourt Brace & Co.), a translation by Michael Biggins from the Slovenian of "Nekropola." It appears to be the only work by Pahor to have been translated into English.

Pahor's experience was in Natzweiler -- and later in Dachau. He tells the
grisly tale of how Italy persecuted the speakers of Slovenian and
Serbo-Croatian in the areas it annaxed after World War I and expanded into after the outbreak of World War II. For Pahor, a Triestino Jew barred from speaking his own language and whose main memories are of gravestones on which the names were italianized and of the main Slovenian library in Trieste being burned to the ground by blackshirted fascists, Natzweiler (he does not explain why he ended in that camp high in the Vosges mountains of France) proved that the ties among "Yugoslavs" were strong despite the signs of breakup after the death of Tito.

This is a literary memoir -- awfully hard to read with constant flashbacks
from present to past and back again -- that does flesh out some horrors.
For example, the hot water in the showers at Natzweiler came from boilers placed above the crematorium ovens (something I did not find in
                                                        Buchenwald).

Peculiarly, Pahor hardly mentions his own Jewishness.
