You couldn't find a blunter or more accurate title for Larry McMurtry's third work of nonfiction. Roads is indeed an automotive odyssey, in which the author traverses America on one highway after another. As such, the book has a long and honorable pedigree, stretching back to Tocqueville by way of Kerouac, and many readers will compare it to William Least Heat-Moon's bucolic ramble, Blue Highways. That, however, would be a mistake. The last thing McMurtry has in mind is a leisurely tour of small-town America--he's interested in the interstates themselves, "the great roads, the major migration routes that carry Americans long distances quickly." No wonder the speedometer seldom dips below 65 mph throughout the entire narrative. McMurtry is a man on the move, and even his meditative moments fly by in the linguistic equivalent of fourth gear.

Actually, there may be another reason the author is reluctant to apply the brakes: his distaste for various towns, villages, counties, and entire states. Planning a trip to the Texas hill country? McMurtry notes that "the soil is too stoney to farm or ranch, the hills are just sort of forested speed bumps, and the people, mostly of stern Teutonic stock, are suspicious, tightfisted, unfriendly, and mean." Missouri is "a place to get through as rapidly as possible," Ohio and Georgia "really aren't pleasant," and woe to the traveler who lingers in the one-horse towns of the West, "where it's not even wise to roll down one's windows--if you avoid getting murdered you might still breathe in some deadly desert germ."

This crankiness does have an undeniable comic appeal. Yet Roads turns out to be a sentimental journey after all, in the course of which McMurtry hopes to resurrect some of the élan vital he lost in the wake of his 1991 heart surgery. Driving, like reading itself, just may prompt some remembrance of things past:

As I prepared to drive those same overfamiliar roads again it occurred to me that my effort was obliquely Proustian, a retracing of my past that is analogous to the many rereadings I've done in the last few years, always of books I read before the surgery. In these rereadings and redrivings I'm searching, not for lost time, but for lost feelings, for the elements of my old personality that are still unaccounted for. I'm not anguished about these absentees, just curious and somewhat wistful.
Indeed, anguish is largely absent from McMurtry's account, and he doesn't dwell often on this scenario of loss and recovery. Still, it comes through particularly strongly at the end, when he compares his own, transient experience of place to his father's. These final chapters cast a sadder and more substantial light on the preceding ones--and make this circuitous, sometimes tetchy book a trip worth taking. --James Marcus

        Book Description

As he crisscrosses America -- driving in search of the present, the past, and himself -- Larry McMurtry shares his fascination with this nation's great trails and the culture that has developed around them.

Ever since he was a boy growing up in Texas only a mile from Highway 281, Larry McMurtry has felt the pull of the road. His town was thoroughly landlocked, making the highway his "river, its hidden reaches a mystery and an enticement. I began my life beside it and I want to drift down the entire length of it before I end this book."

In Roads, McMurtry embarks on a cross-country trip where his route is also his destination. As he drives, McMurtry reminisces about the places he's seen, the people he's met, and the books he's read, including more than 3,000 books about travel. He explains why watching episodes of The Mary Tyler Moore Show might be the best way to find joie de vivre in Minnesota; the scenic differences between Route 35 and I-801; which vigilantes lived in Montana and which hailed from Idaho; and the history of Lewis and Clark, Sitting Bull, and Custer that still haunts Route 2 today.

As it makes its way from South Florida to North Dakota, from eastern Long Island to Oregon, Roads is travel writing at its best.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, quick overview of US Interstates.......2007-03-23

McMurtry provides a good macro level take on various US Interstates. If you're looking for minute details of each route, this book is not for you. But if a brief synopsis of what the whole highway system and the literature particular to each region mean to him sounds like an intriguing topic, I encourage you to check it out.

His observations for the handful of roads with which I am familiar, were spot on, particularly I-35. This gave the rest of his reports instant credibility and allowed me to trust with increased confidence his opinions. I really liked his analogy of the interstate system to rivers (he refers to the beginnings of roads as headwaters and talks about highways' merging like the juncture of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers).

Furtherly enjoyable were his notes on various other writers. As a novice literature enthusiast, his recommendations and anecdotes were very helpful; although, perhaps to a more grizzled book veteran, this wouldn't be nearly as beneficial. Overall, I enjoyed this quick read.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Its Genre.......2006-03-30

I came to this book with perhaps an unusual background in that I'd not read much, if any, of McMurtry's fiction (although like most filmgoers I'd seen a lot of his overall product). On the other hand, I have read much of the American "on the road" travel literature from Steinbeck to Theroux to Least Heat Moon to Bryson, but I didn't enjoy any of them as much as Larry McMurtry's present book and it's difficult for me to explain why.

It's not simply that the author avoids autobiography and philosophizing, because he does not. When McMurtry goes off on these tangents, however, it's always in measured portions and is never tedious or preachy. He visits with people on the road but, again, doesn't overdo it by attempting to make icons or archetypes out of the ordinary. These sidebars always seem to help support the ongoing narrative and are almost always informative. What McMurtry really does best of all though is to recreate the feel of an Interstate Highway journey. For someone (like myself) who treasures these kind of journeys, there is a cinematic pleasure in reading his writing, which is present whether McMurtry is describing a road I've already traveled or one I may never see. This is actually the sort of text that a lot of photographs might detract from.

As I said, it's really very tough to explain exactly what is so pleasurable about reading this book (actually, I listened to an Audible.com reading and then bought the paperback for reference afterwards) other than to say it's very much like being on the road on a cloudless spring day in the open country, in no hurry to get where you're going, and being happy just to pick up what the author gives along the way. For me that's more than enough to warrant the highest recommendation.

        1 out of 5 stars How boring.......2006-03-15

'Nuff said. Dense, uninteresting, and a work of complete vanity. I wish I could get away with writing a few hundred pages of blither at the end of a road trip probably on someone else's dime.

Paging through a road atlas is much more exciting.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting insights and observations.......2005-09-12

Briefly, I thought the book provided the reader an interesting and fresh perspective on American locales and culture. I found it a valuable alternative to Blue Highways styled narratives - not deriding them - just commenting on the welcome change. Additionally, I found some of his literary references helpful.

2 out of 5 stars One Should Not Drive This Aimlessly.......2005-07-08

This is a pretty mediocre little travel book, and I agree with some previous reviewers in that this kind of self-indulgence could only be published by an established writer who has had greater success previously. Here Larry McMurtry has created an odd mix of memoirs and literary observations by way of a series of half-hearted road trips that he wasn't really enthusiastic about taking. His commentary on sights and characters during his travels is occasionally interesting, in a cynical and curmudgeonly fashion. A good example is his savage comparison of delayed commuters at the airport with refugees in Kosovo. But such coverage of scenery and people, which is what makes great travel books, is rare here. Instead, McMurtry mostly muses on his own foibles, talks about his own books, and reviews the works of other writers who happened to be from the places through which he drove, quickly.

Hence the road trips become merely a vague backdrop for exercises in reminiscing, and McMurtry unloads some poorly defined justifications for taking the journeys, relying on stock gibberish about finding oneself on the road, exploring the soul of America, and the like. Worst of all, during each trip McMurtry often starts complaining partway through that he has lost whatever inspiration caused him to start out, and in a quite annoying anti-travel fashion, he spends more time describing why he decided to avoid certain highways and even large regions. One horrendous example is his dismissal of the entire state of Idaho because of its small population of Aryans, while he has little good to say about any large city he traverses, nor many of the small towns. The only thing saving this book from total oblivion is the many times McMurtry praises other travel writers, which will encourage you to explore books far more enjoyable than this one. Book Description

Written with a clear and concise style, this book provides a solid foundation of theory and a clear demonstration of effective practice. It also: covers the tools of financial engineering; defines each instrument and describes the markets in which they are traded; explains how each product is priced and hedged.

          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource For Practical Financial Risk Management.......2002-02-23

This book emphasises the relationship between the debt and currency markets. This relationship can be summarized by the international fisher equation, however this book addresses topics that are typically not addressed in more theoretical texts. If you really want to understand how the international currency and debt markets operate on a practical level, including a rather comprehensive coverage of Swaps, Caps, Collars, FRAs, etc., then this book is a must. The mathematics in this book are rather simple and should pose no problem for a beginner or intermediate level student of finance.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book and Worth Buying.......1999-07-23

This book is excellent for both academics and practitioners. Because of its low level of mathematics, it can be used at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The exposition is clear and concise but not formal. The book covers a lot of ground and is written by an expert in the field. Almost each section has plenty of good real world examples. It can be used as an introductory reference to advanced topics such as interest rate option modelling and the Brace-Gatarek-Musiela Approach.

However, the book needs a new edition to include the latest topics in the modelling of interest rates. A visual basic computer disc for practice could improve the book considerably.

At less than $50 the price of the book makes it a bargain.

4 out of 5 stars Informative read about an obnoxious character.......2006-12-01

Frank Klement's bio of the most controversial and yet largely forgotten figure of the Civil War era is one that all scholars should read. It is also interesting enough to tickle a general history reader's fancy. The one flaw is that Klement likes his main character a bit too much. Clement L. Vallandigham was an obnoxious, negrophobic, Republican-hating gadfly (the title of one of the chapters) whose stick-it-in-your-eye attitude both in and out of Congress made him unappealing even within his Democratic party. Klement regularly refers to Vallandigham's severest critics as "bigots" (largely true), but never does he label Vallandigham with that title, even though he deserved it. Klement's explanation as to why Vallandigham lost the Ohio governor's race in 1863 is lopsided, just bad luck after the victories at Gettysburg and Vicksburg and the repelling of John Hunt Morgan's raid into Ohio. Klement seems unable to admit that many people passionately hated Vallandigham, not the least of whom were the soldiers fighting in the field for the cause against which he spoke so vehemently. (Sound familiar here in 2006?) Nonetheless, Clement Vallandigham was a force during his time and became an icon to civil rights after Ambrose Burnside ordered his arrest and trial and Lincoln banished him to the South. He never accepted the fact that war might require a different approach to civil liberties. (Speaking of Burnside, there is an extraordinary error on page 122. Klement refers to Burnside's defeat Dec. 13, 1862, at the battle of Chancellorsville and repeats it further down the page. That battle, of course, was Fredericksburg. Chancellorsville occurred the following May. Forgive Klement. That kind of error is easy to make even when you know better, as he surely did. But where was the editor?)

          5 out of 5 stars Well-Researced: Highly Controversial.......2001-05-30

Author Frank L. Klement (with tongue firmly in cheek) once told an audience that there were only two imortant central figures in the Civil War: Lincoln and Clement L. Vallandigham; the subject of this disputable biography. One must understand that Frank L. Klement is a revisionist historian with 62% of his 221 published items anti-Lincoln. Attacking Lincoln, the most sacred icon in American history, for blatant illegalities in violation of civil liberties caused a sensation in the histrorical community when it was first introduced. Klement's contention that the Copperhead movement was not a threat to the union has generally been accepted by major Lincoln scholars including James Macpherson. The question remains how far can civil liberties be protected before they endanger national security. In the case of Clement Vallandigham the outer limits were reached in a time when many, including Lincoln, felt that constitutional liberties would lose the nation. Klement's thesis has gained more respectability since the dissent of Viet Nam, but the problem presented by Vallandigham has really never been resolved. Vallandigham won two out of eight elections for congressman from Ohio. Preaching preservation of the union with slavery intact, he believed the South could not be coerced into reentering the union. The Ohio congressman was the spokesman for many in the midwest who favoured agriculture over industry, opposed equality for blacks, and wanted to continue the balance of power the midwest played in the rivalry between North and South. Had this been all to Vallandigham he would have been written off as a hopeless reactionary. But the Dayton congressman was also a liberal, speaking out against arbitrary arrests, executive usurpation, as well as supporting abolishment of capital punishment, Jewish rabbis as army chaplains and free trade. The Ohioan was also-according to James Horan-a child prodigy learning the alphabet at age two and learning to speak both Latin and Greek at age twelve. (see Horan's CONFEDERATE AGENT,PA.18). No physical coward, Vallandigham courted martyrdom by defying federal authorities. He was sentenced to two years imprisonment by General Burnside (upheld by the court in EX PARTE VALLANDIGHAM). Wisely, Lincoln dumped him over the border into Dixie, ignoring the gadfly wdhen he attended the Chicago Democratic Convention of 1864. Klement's Vallandigham comes across as an insufferable self-righteous prig who was neutralized by Lincoln. But Vallandigham-the faithful son of a Calvinist Huguenot minister-always believed he would be vindicated by history. While defending a client in a murder case Vallandigham grabbed the wrong pistol and killed himself. He has largely been forgotten by posterity. The bullet that ended Lincoln's life, on the otherhand, made him immortal. Such is the verdict of history.

Manes Sperber won the German Book Trade Peace Prize in 1984, the year of his death. His unique capacity to describe living history makes "The Unheeded Warning" a stirring portrayal of life in Vienna in the 20s and in Berlin in the early 30s. He became attached to Alfred Adler's school of Individual Psychology, was for a time quite active in the Hashomer Hatzair (a leftist Zionist pioneering youth movement) and later an energetic Communist Party member in Germany. The book ends with his arrest -and release- in Berlin shortly after the Nazi rise to power, allowing him to see the easiness with which Reds became brownshirts.

            Book Description

The fascinating parallel narratives of three men who influenced the era between 1920 and 1950--Wright, Henry Ford and Franklin D. Roosevelt--are interwoven with provocative details about other lives, historic events and personal insights to demonstrate how Wright's ideas have shaped modern America. Describes how the architect's vision failed and succeeded and how Usonia was realized in expected and unexpected ways.

5 out of 5 stars Usonia: Frank lloyd Wright's Design for America.......2003-04-20

The architect Frank Lloyd Wright was eager to jump on the New Deal bandwagon in the 1930s to help reshape America across a sprawling countryside. His anti-urban regional planning ideas are well documented in this fascinating story that identifies the influences on Wright's sensibilities, from Lewis Mumford, Henry Ford, FDR, and others. Rosenbaum, who grew up a Frank Lloyd Wright Usoinan house built by his parents in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, weaves the story of the house (now a house museum open to the public) with early developments in manufactured housing, the Tennessee Valley Authority, greenbelt communities, and other federal initiatives of the era.

4 out of 5 stars The Rosenbaum Usonian Experience.......2000-10-26

In 1993 my wife and I visited Florence Alabama and learned that there was a Wright Usonian home that was built in the 30's. My wife qualifies as a true "Househugger" so we called and made an appointment to tour the home. We were met at the door by Mildred Rosenbaum, a delightful person, who shared the experience of having Mr. Wright design and build the house(of course through his assistants). This home is a piece of art that has been kept true to FLW's ideals and with the exception of the furniture (Mrs. Rosenbaum said the original furniture was very uncomfortable)which is compatible with the original construction. Oh, the story she told. . . This book enhances that story and puts all in perspective with the times and the area. In Sheffield there is a building that Henry Ford built when he wanted to buy the Wilson Dam Generating Dam to create an industrial empire in the south.

Mrs. Rosenbaum no longer lives there and the City of Florence owns the house. Read this book and visit the home. Both will give you an experience that you will not get anywhere else. The author was born there and raised there. He shares experiences that happened in the house and the diversity that existed in this small part of the south.

            2 out of 5 stars Somewhat disappointing.......1999-08-12

If you are an absolute Wrightophile, then I guess you might want this book. You will not learn anything new about Wright, and you wont see any outstanding photography either. 195 pages of double spaced text. Not much bang for your buck.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful parent guide .......2007-09-04

The book helped me see how my parents effected me in certain ways,
particularly about my self esteem, and how I have carried that through
to my sons. Because of this I have become much more aware of how I
talk to my kids and I pay attention to how they react to me.
My husband I and I talk to each other more now since the book about
what we see in each other's behavior towards our kids.
It is the only book I have ever read that really talks about the
emotional side of sports. Reading it was such an education and so
helpful in understanding how much emotions play a role in my son's
approach to sports. I knew it to some extent, but not near to the
extent I now am aware of it.I found that this book is not really just about sports, but about
parenting, and it can apply to all areas in my son's life.
Not assuming that I always know how I am impacting my sons with my
behavior. I pay much more attention to how I speak to them,
particularly the tones in my voice when I am disappointed with them.
Until I read the book I did not understand how often my frustration or
anger (often it didn't have anything to do with my kids) was negatively
effected my sons, not only in sports, but in our relationship.
Learning how to be more supportive, by listening to them a little
differently and encouraging them--by asking more questions--to talk
about how they feel about things. Appreciating to a greater extent how
            important this is.
Understanding much more about how their birth order effects how they
approach sports and everything else in their lives.I was honored to do a book signing and Q&A for our son's school, the author was kind enough to attend. The school sold over 60 books and parents responded possitivally to all ascpects of the book.
I would recommend this book to anyone.

2 out of 5 stars Review of Will you Still Love me If I Don't Win.......2006-01-30

I got some good information out of this book once I got to the journaling/exercises. Until then it really made me feel like I was going to screw up my kids and that everything I said or did was going to be either too pressure-inducing for them or too unsupportive! I almost quit reading just because it made me feel bad, but I kept going. I kept telling myself that it couldn't be all THAT bad...and as I said, the journaling/exercises were helpful.

I also thought it was very repetative. The same thing was said over and over in about 20 different ways..."you really MUST examine your feelings."

Anyway...I don't think I would recommend the book EXCEPT for the journaling/exercises in the last section.

                  Book Description

This is the moving account of a nurse charged with establishing a hospital at Belsen concentration camp at the end of World War II. When British troops arrived at the camp in April 1945, they found 40,000 desperately ill men, women, and children and 10,000 unburied dead bodies. Chief Nurse Muriel Knox Doherty arrived soon after with the task of creating a hospital, scrounging for supplies, and saving as many of the camp survivors as possible. In letters written to her mother and friends in Australia, she describes her experiences at Belsen in moving detail. She tells of the plight of Jewish survivors unable to return home and the appeals from desperate families trying to find their loved ones among the former prisoners. One of the few accounts of a concentration camp written by a non-Jew, this remarkable collection of letters is illustrated with period photographs and striking drawings by one of the Belsen survivors.

                  Book Description

“I find it hard even now to get into focus all these horrors, my mind is really quite incapable of taking in everything I saw because it was all so completely foreign to everything I had previously believed or thought possible.” British Major Ben Barnett’s words echoed the sentiments shared by medical students, Allied soldiers, members of the clergy, ambulance drivers, and relief workers who found themselves utterly unprepared to comprehend, much less tend to, the indescribable trauma of those who survived at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp.

The liberation of Bergen-Belsen by the British in April 1945 was a defining point in history: the moment the world finally became inescapably aware of the Holocaust. But what happened after Belsen was liberated is still a matter of dispute. Was it an epic of medical heroism or the culmination of thirteen years of indifference to the fate of Europe’s Jews? This startling investigation by acclaimed documentary filmmaker and historian Ben Shephard draws on an extraordinary range of materials–contemporary diaries, military documents, and survivors’ testimonies–to reconstruct six weeks at Belsen beginning on April 15, 1945, and reveals what actually caused the post-liberation deaths of nearly 14,000 concentration camp inmates who might otherwise have lived. Why did it take almost two weeks to organize a proper medical response? Why were the medical teams sent to Belsen so poorly equipped? Why, when specialists did arrive, did they get so much of the medicine plain wrong?

For the first time, Shephard explores the humanitarian and medical issues surrounding
the liberation of the camp and provides a detailed, illuminating account that is far more complex than had been previously revealed. This gripping book confronts the terrifying aftermath of war with questions that still haunt us today.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent account of post-liberation challenges.......2006-07-23

I purchased this book at the Bergen Belsen Memorial (sorry Amazon) at the end of my visit there between the USA's first two games at the 2006 World Cup.
My father (who is still living) was a US Army medic in World War II. A few days after the British Army liberated Bergen Belsen his company of medics (29th Div. 104th Med Bttn, Co. A) was assigned to Bergen Belsen and remained there for a day or so to provide assistance to the surviving Jews, Polish slave laborers and other internees.
Ben Sheperd's prose held my interest easily and I finished his book during my flight back to the states. Most accounts I have seen in print, film or other media cover little of what happended at concentration camps after they were liberated by Allied forces. This account is an objective look at both the successes and failures in the approach and actions of the British authorities who were in charge of the camp. One major area of criticism is that there had been clear pre-liberation indications and hard intelligence as to what was transpiring at the camps, yet the planning and approach was undertaken largely in ignorance of the conditions.
My only disappointment is that the book makes no mention of the (albeit brief) contributions of American military personnel like those in my father's unit. However as the book was written for a British audience by a BBC producer and the post-liberation operations were overwhelmingly performed by British civilian and military personnel, that is quite understandable. The book does mention the volunteer efforts of American Friends Service Committee personnel.

                  5 out of 5 stars A remarkable book.......2006-07-13

This is the finest book about the holocaust, and perhaps one of the finest books that I have ever read. It should be required reading at the high school or college level, as well as for heads of state.

                  5 out of 5 stars Superb writing.......2005-11-27

Mr Shepard did a superb job of illuminating the story of the liberation of Bergen Belsen by the British. The writing is very clear and compelling. It is definitely in my top collection of ""top 10 most clearly written books", making the reading of a very sad chapter of human history very rewarding indeed.
