incredibly disorganized, and outdated too.......2004-04-27

this ranks as the worst casebook I've ever had the ill-fortune of being forced to read throughout my three years of law school. The fact that it is outdated and thus incorrect on many points is annoying enough. But, even worse is that the book has no sense of organization or direction, and most of its notes are worthless. I definitely expected more from the Aspen Law & Business publisher, whose text books are usually pretty good. You're almost better off not reading this book at all.

The book is 25% a glossary and 25% a full partnership contract of very little value. Only 61 pages of 163 have any pertinent information. Apparently written by a quickie formula on how to start a business, establish contacts and work hard. Very litte meat of conducting a second mortgage business. Nothing on usary or regulations. Nothing on the mechanics of discounting or county filings, repossesion. Better buy: Smart Trust Deed Investment In California by George Coats, ISBN 0-934581-01-0

Not as excited.......2006-12-30

I was really looking forward to getting this book, but was disappointed. As a Rev War Reenactor I was looking for some really good insights. However, I was disappointed to find that the book was originally printed in 1940 and that many of the resources were previously published books (so read pre-1940!) Current research is much more advanced than it was in 1940! (For those of you who aare like me - remember the English Bodice!)

Dates were very general and any portraits or art were undated.

If you are a generalist, than this book mught be OK, but if you are someone looking to interpret a time period accurately, I'd recommend Linda Baumgarten, Sharon Burnston or Aileen Ribiero instead.

As for me, I'm returning the book!

For this revised edition of Hildegard's liturgical song cycle, Barbara Newman has redone her prose translations of the songs, updated the bibliography and discography, and made other minor changes. Famous throughout Europe during her lifetime, Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179) was a composer and a poet, a writer on theological, scientific, and medical subjects, an abbess, and a visionary prophet. One of the very few female composers of the Middle Ages whose work has survived, Hildegard was neglected for centuries until her liturgical song cycle was rediscovered. Songs from it are now being performed regularly by early music groups, and more than twenty compact discs have been recorded.

I haven't read the second edition, actually, but I did read the first (1988) and I'm using it at the moment. In addition to fabulous translations (literal and artistic) of Hildegard's poetry, Barbara Newman provides a great depth of description, background material, explanations, and information regarding Hildegard and her work. It's a sound scholarly reference and the poetry is breathtaking.
