Needs more detail, update.......2002-01-15

Provides little other than business names. It contains much less information than any other Amsterdam guide that I've seen. This 4 year old quide needs to be updated.

Enlightening: In A "like-it-is" Sense!.......1999-07-21

As expected, this book provides the ignorant traveler with a wealth of gay life information and resources unlike like its somewhat conservative competitor--Fodors Gay Guide to Amsterdam. Though its referred hotels are somewhat questionable in an undescriptive sense, the remainder of the guide picks up where Fodors leaves off. THIS is not by any means a sole travel guide-use it to compliment a trusty Traditional Foders etc.,....but when the sun goes down this Damron will be the Gay traveler's best friend. Appealing to both Older men, and Young teens...It gives the nitty gritty about all clubs, events, activties, and scenes--devoting only a single page to dyke life. (THANK GOD!) Its choice of restaurants also prove note status. In addition to that, you'll get some great pocket size maps, and some general travel info. Excellant for everything but attractions, walking tours, etc... Bottom line: Don't leave home with out it.

The designs in the book are all easy-to-see, and it progresses through the book from simple to elaborate. There are 24 plates in all. They include instructions for transferring the patterns to dark fabric and to wood. Neat stuff!

When I ordered this book, I was afraid that a lot of the designs would be from the "Celtic animals" and "Celtic Iron on Transfers". Fortunately, they're all unique. They are all larger than the the designs in the other books.

The art is great and the transfers are of high quality. The transfers are all different sizes, from full page designs to small trim pieces. Several of the designs can be chained to create borders. Some are mirrored and others are matched multi-part designs. Excellent quality and great variety.

Superb iron-on tranfers of Celtic animal designs.......2000-03-29

These dazzling transfers are exciting and varied. You won't be able to contain your creative impulses when you look at them. These designs are the stuff of late night art projects. Mallory Pearce has given us a very fine collection.

Wow! What a book on the greatest musical artist of modern times.......2007-09-30

I just finished reading this book and am amazed at the insights into Elvis' life that the author showed. He covered a lot of things that have been covered ad nauseum by others yet made it read like a novel. And, he adds so much more detail to the day-to-day life of Elvis that provide a much fuller description of his life. Even the footnotes are fascinating reading.
For a true Elvis fan, this is a must have for your collection. I could hardly put it down and this is not trivial reading, given that the book is more than 700 pages. Mr. Guralinick's 1st book on Elvis ("Last Train to Memphis: the Rise of Elvis Presley") is a must read also.

And I wasn't even interested in the King - until now.......2007-08-31

Elvis had always been a cliché to me. "The King" - yeah, yeah, that old fat guy that tabloids claim to still be alive (Impressionists going, "Thank you, Momma baby..."). To me The Beatles and The Beach Boys were rock and roll . . .

But the anniversary of his death inspired me to pick up this book. I wasn't really interested in early Elvis; I wanted to know about the 1960s and 70s Elvis - the one who was on t.v., the one who bought cars for strangers, the one who created Graceland. 50s Elvis was "cool", but later Elvis was "weird."

I knew that Peter Guralnick's Last Train to Memphis: The Rise of Elvis Presley was well-regarded, so I took a chance on this, the book that that just happened to overlap the years I wanted to know about. I figured I'd skim and skip about. WRONG! I could not put this book down, and now I am listening to Elvis's music and watching his movies.

"Careless Love" covers the late 50s (Elvis in the Army) up to his death in 1977. And it is definitive. The activities of practically each day are spelled out. Guralnick's research is top notch. He has used video and audio recordings, memoirs (extracts from Priscilla's autobiography are particularly effective), and interviews with those who were there to give us not just the facts, but genuine insight into the man. We see how the demands of performing drove him to stimulants, which then required downers to get him back to normal, and the vicious circle that began.

The surprises never stop coming: Colonel Tom Parker's amazing background - as an illegal immigrant, the origin of the jumpsuit look, Elvis the Pelvis was surprisingly not that sexual . . .

If you grew up watching him this book will show you what was happening behind the scenes. But if to you he's just a guy on a stamp that your mother talks about, there is no better introduction to a man who shaped music (despite the Beatles and the Stones). "Careless Love" addresses all the music (re-creations of recording sessions let you in on the creative process), love-life (hello Ann-Margaret, hello Priscilla), and behavioral (what he liked to eat and when) points you want to read about without ever being trashy or exploitive. Indeed, the book is almost scholarly. It's book about The King that you can read in public without feeling like you're a tabloid hound (dog).

THE GREATEST ON THE GREATEST.......2007-05-14

Following straight on from 'Last Train To Memphis', Guralnick's exhaustive account of Elvis Presley's life is a benchmark of biography. With its hundreds of pages, it may look like it's going to be a long haul. But in truth, it's a quick read because the author expertly places you right alongside Elvis and his fellow travellers. Guralnick is the definitive Elvis author.

A REALLY GOOD LOOK AT ELVIS'S LIFE. WELL WRITTEN AND EASY TO READ. I WOULD RECOMMEND READING "LAST TRAIN TO MEMPHIS" BY THE SAME AUTHOR BEFORE THIS BOOK. THE TWO GO TOGETHER, AND TELL THE STORY FROM START TO FINISH.

A terrific story from beging to end...you sense you are there with the real elvis...a bit hard at first to get to grip with all the people in elvis's life but a well worth read...bring on the second book...

In Careless Whispers, Ms. Alers tells us Dyana Randolph's story. Dyana is a young woman who after being burned by deception of mistaken love and stood up at the altar, Dyana decides to hide away from love should it ever come along again. After leaving home and moving in with her unmarried aunt, Dyana launches herself into her work at Pinnacle magazine. She also feels safe with the magazine's publisher, Michael Dalton, an older man and a fatherly figure, who is also widowed. Dyana feels obligated to Michael and helps him out as a hostess after hours and serves as his date on many occasions. However, good intentions, Dyana and Michael are the brunt of many office whispers of a romantic involvement between the two. The whispers are not only cruel, but they are careless whispers that are untrue.

After Michael decides to retire, a younger and renown journalist, Nicholas Bradshaw takes over the businesss. Nicholas is smitten with Dyana and becomes enamored of her. Although he has heard the whispers, he sets out to form his own opinions. Nicholas thinks its strange that Dyana is drawn to Michael and there are some doubts, but Nicholas also gives Dyana the benefit of the doubt. After several encounters, Nicholas is not only drawn to Dyana, but Dyana's heart unthaws and she begin to see Nicholas as a love interest. Can love possibly be in the picture for Dyana, who desperately wants to love again? Can she get pass the most ultimate betrayal by her first love? Alers Is My Favorite!.......2007-01-03

I searched high and low to find each novel written by Ms. Alers. I felt a loss when I came to the end of another and estatic when the next arrived (mail order). Careless Whispers was no exception. Well done!

Brief, forgettable, and amateurish..........2004-07-02

Rochelle Alers's first novel "Careless Whispers" tries to be a different romance, but the story bored me to tears, but luckily it was only 186 pages. Dyana, the magazine writer heroine, starts to fall hard for a maverick Pulitizer-prize winning photographer after someone rams their car in an accident. Dyana starts to see Nicholas(the photographer) in a new light. Then they work together on a "tell-all" book from a convicted spy, and naturally, they're smitten with each other and marry. But both have heavy baggage from exes that cheated on them. Will they repeat the same mistakes? Or will they learn to trust each other completely. Only merits 2 stars.

THIS IS WHAT DELAYED MY ENTRY INTO BLACK ROMANCE 10/23/02.......2002-10-24

It took me to get to chapter 4 before I realized I read this book before. I read this book back in 1989 when I picked up my first African-American romance. I am an avid reader and I also collect books. I have my original copy of this book with a different cover. Back then I honestly believed that white writers were writing these books because the format that was followed was similar to Harlequin Romances. Everyone knows that a Harlequin had a guy, a girl, and an unlikely situation. The whole romance was based on a look, a one time kiss, or reactions and dialogue that was way over the top and supposed to pass for sensuous. This was the type of African-American romance that made me not want to read any romance that was supposed to have African American characters in it. I didn't pick up another African-American Romance until 1995. Overall, I absolutely love Ms. Alers later stories the Hideaway series and her Anthologies but as for this story and Gentle Yearnings they are not what I would call hot, sexual, or sensuous stories. They are luke warm like older Harlequins they leave you wondering why you wasted your time.

PLUS, SHE CRIED TOO MUCH. I'VE HEARD THAT MRS. ALERS WRITES GOOD BOOKS. WELL, THIS WAS THE FIRST BOOK OF HERS THAT I HAVE READ. THIS MUST NOT HAVE BEEN HER BEST.
