Great travel writing.......2005-04-12
Zaire isn't easy to get through, but the author certainly gave it her all making the trek. As a travel piece, I'd give it five stars. However, I'm deducting a couple of points for the politics. I disagree strongly with the author's conclusions/assessments. She and her partner shouldn't have been so surprised by their "arrest" just before leaving; while others were left to rot in jail, tortured, etc. they were able to feast at the embassador's residence under a sort of "house arrest" until Mobutu finally got sick of toying with them and gave their passports back.
What an adventure!.......2003-06-14
This book was truly fascinating. I read it shortly after reading The Poisonwood Bible, which had sparked my curiousity about central Africa. The author and her boyfriend set out on a trip across Zaire with no real idea of how they would get to their destination, and ended up dealing with situations that were so far beyond my frame of reference that I could scarcely imagine them. The author generally writes well and conveys a good sense of the tribulations and frustrations - as well as some moments of optimism - they encountered along the way as they got an unusually close-up view of the people and culture of the country. My only quibble with the book has to do with the inordinate number of typos.
Excellent story of travel to Heart of Moubutu's Zaire.......2002-01-31
"East Along the Equator: A Journey Up the Congo and into Zaire" is an excellent account of a journey across Central Africa (in what was then Zaire) in the early 1980s. Winternitz and her companion traveled by river barge along the entire navigable portion of the Congo river, from Kinshasa to Kisangani. The Congo river barges are legendary among 'extreme' travelers. The end of Belgian colonization of the Congo meant the end of roads, making the river the only practical way to travel between Kinshasa and Kisangani. These river barges are (were?) floating villages, complete with markets and nightclubs populated by traders who make their livelihood onboard, as well as travelers going from place to place. From Kisangani the journey continues overland, to an eventual return to Kinshasa by air. In Kinshasa the pair are arrested and interrogated by the secret police after interviewing a politician opposed to president Moubutu. Winternitz gives an even-handed and interesting account of the journey, along with relevant history and background information. The book contains a good bibliography. This book was journalism when it was first published, and it is still worth reading today, as a document of the Congo under Moubutu.

Simply, A Great Book.......2000-05-30
This book is a rarity. I have read histories of Africa and I've read travelogues set in Africa and on other continents. But never have I read such a readable and illuminating mix of the two. If you're interested in Africa, read this book. If you like fine writing, get this book.

Book Description
The Crisis in Telecommunications Carrier Liability addresses the important public policy issues underlying liability rules for common carriers in the context of telephone companies. These public policy concerns must be evaluated for their compatibility in achieving other public policy objectives, such as universal service, imposed on the telecommunications industry under the Telecommunications Act of 1996. This book offers the industry and policymakers, as well as those hoping to influence the public policy process, both the means and recommendations for designing more appropriate liability rules in order to achieve the numerous social objectives for the telecommunications industry.
Customer Reviews:
An Excellent Book.......2006-10-06
The concept of common carriage is generally assumed and universally misunderstood. One aspect of the historical mythology that is contorted beyond recognition is the liability of common carriers for the goods carried. If a telegraph, telephone (or dare I say Internet network) mangles the message and causes harm, what liability does that carrier have - and more importantly - why? Barbara Cherry looks at the theoretical underpinnings of the regulatory position and how liability faces new challenges in the post telecom act of 1996 era.
Bringing Order to Chaos.......2000-04-01
Among the myriad works attempting to explain what, if any, fundamental logic guided Congress's 1996 decision to amend the 1934 Communications Act, only an exceptional few succeed. One that does, however, is Professor Barbara Cherry's "The Crisis in Telecommunications Carrier Liability."
Cherry's work employs an historical and institutional approach to decipher seemingly counter-intuitive liability provisions saddled upon incument local exchange carriers and inter-exchange carriers. Rather than focusing exclusively on the text of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, Cherry weaves together a rich tapestry of legal and regulatory history on the one hand, with social policy objectives such as universal service on the other hand. This warp is deftly manipulated with a weft of institutional context to provide one of the most coherent and complete explanations of the state of telecommunications law as it exists today in the United States.
The contradictions between social policy objectives and the over-arching concern for opening the last mile to competitive entry by unbundling the network elements (Section 251)is thoroughly addressed in Cherry's work. She manages this tension well and proposes well-informed policy remedies obviously aimed at a lawmaking audience.
Cherry's work benefits from her industry experience as well as her academic style. It is a must read for any student of telecommunication regulation theory as well as telecommunications policy-makers everywhere. It should be included on the syllabi of communications programs nationwide.
I unequivocally give this book my highest recommendation, and hope that it will spark the kind of informed policy debate it was intended to generate.

Great Help.......2006-05-31
I used both the review books and the CD rom with practice exams and passed the first time!
BISK BEC Book and Software .......2005-11-04
I have serious issues with the quality of the BEC Review by Bisk. I have successfully used all four sections of Bisk's review, but I want to warn potential purchasers of the lack of quality in this volume. Sure, the BEC section is "new", but the editing was terrible on both the book and the software, simple mistakes as mentioned by the other posts. For the amount of money review materials cost - it should be mistake free. THE REAL PROBLEM THOUGH, is the lack of information in the IT section. They use AICPA developed questions for their practice sections, but fail to discuss nearly half of the answers in the text. I read the chapter two times before taking the practice questions, and had NO IDEA where some of the q's were getting pulled from. On the software, it has a link that says "click here for in depth solution." This takes you to the text where the answer is supposed to be found, many times, it was not there. Often times, impossible to infer the answer from the text as well. I would not waste money on Bisk's BEC section.
Better CPA review than most!!.......2004-07-27
For the money, Bisk is hard to beat. The strongest part of the Bisk review, in my opinion, are the Audio CD's. They don't just read from the book, like some audio CD's. They actually engage you in a friendly, often humorous, manner. This really helped me to remember key concepts. I believe Bisk has the best examples in their books of all the providers. Except maybe for Becker...but you can't buy Becker books without buying their WHOLE program. And you can buy these books dirt cheap on Amazon. Like any review program, it is only good if you use it. And if you don't put the time and effort into it, it won't work. I also take issue with the other reviews on the BEC book. I think Bisk has done a great job with the BEC section.
Errors galore.......2004-07-08
Yes, this book was very poorly edited. All the new parts such as Economics have incorrect answers in the back. Very distracting when you're trying to hunker down and study. There's one part where the answer key actually says 3 + 4 = 5 . Which, if you were just glancing over the answers, would really throw you for a loop. But on a positive note, i passed the BEC section with an 82.
Some mistakes in multiple-choice results.......2003-12-20
Some mistakes in multiple-choice results. This book really needs to be corrected. Also they don't send free stimulation CD as they promised when we buy this book.

Book Description
The Diary of Dolly Lunt Burge is the compelling story of an ordinary woman rising to meet extraordinary challenges in nineteenth-century Georgia. Dolly Lunt Burge's full life was remarkable for the range of roles she filled and the variety of her experiences. That her life coincided with critical transformations in America and that she recorded her experiences within this historical context make her diary all the more noteworthy.
Burge moved from Maine to Georgia with her physician husband in the 1840s. By the time she began her diary at age thirty, Dolly had lost her husband and her only living child to illness. A devout and self-sufficient schoolteacher, she soon married again, to Thomas Burge, a planter and widowed father of four. Upon her second husband's death in 1858, Dolly independently ran the plantation, located in Mansfield. She remained there during the Civil War, witnessing Sherman's famous march through the area. Dolly married a third and final time, in 1866, to Rev. William Parks, a prominent Methodist minister. Through it all, Dolly recorded the changes in her life and her country, describing her surroundings, friends, family, and feelings in thoughtful, moving language.
Originally published in part as A Woman's Wartime Journal: An Account of Sherman's Devastation of a Southern Plantation (1918), this journal was published in its entirety in 1962. This full version, first published in 1997 and based on a new transcription from the original manuscript, incorporates the relevant scholarship of the intervening decades. It also draws on extensive census and probate records, includes additional family photographs, and offers expanded genealogical information on the African Americans from the Burge plantation.

Book Description
The Milkweed Ladies the memoirs of poet Louise McNeill, is written our deep affection for and intimate knowledge of the lives of rural people and the rhythms of the natural world. It is a personal account of the farm in southern West Virginia where her family has lived for nine generations.
Born in 1911, McNeill tells the story of her own growing years on the farm through the circadian rhythms of rural life. She presents the farm itself, “its level fields, its fence row, and hilly pastures . . . some two hundred acres of trees and bluegrass, running water, and the winding, dusty paths that cattle and humans have kept open through the years.” She writes movingly of the harsh routines of the lives of her family, from spring ploughing to winter sugaring, and of the hold the farm itself has on them and the earth itself on all of us.
By the 1930s, the farm and the surrounding community had been drastically changed by the destruction left by the lumber companies, by the increased access to the outside world resulting from railway and automobile, and by war. McNeill herself left the farm in 1937 to complete her college education and to persue her literary career.
Throughout The Milkweed Ladies, McNeill juxtaposes the life of the farm with the larger world events that impinge on it. But the larger world moves closer and closer to the world of the farm as McNeill herself moves away from it. The book concludes with McNeill’s perspective on the events of August 5, 1945. As she sits in the Commodore Hotel in New York City, reading the headlines about Hiroshima, she understands that she can never see the farm in the same way again.
The Milkweed Ladies is filled with memorable characters - an herb-gathering Granny, McNeill’s sailor father, her patient, flower-loving mother, and Aunt Malindy in her “black sateen dress” who “never did a lick of work.” With her poet’s gift for detail and language, McNeill creates a world, forgotten by many of us, to some of us never known.
Customer Reviews:
A gentle and profound memoir of an Appalachian family........1998-10-22
Louise McNeill was the poet laureate of her home state of West Virginia, and this book is poetic in its evocation of the richness of rural life in that state. She makes you feel the variety and delight of nature, the security of family and friends, and the uncertainties of change. I reread this book about once a year, and I find it fresh and inspiring every time.
