Best restaurant travel book out there.......2004-08-26

This is without a doubt, the best investment I've ever made for travel. I can't tell you how great it was to not have to worry about where to eat while traveling alone in Montreal. 4 out of the 4 restaurants I went to were stellar. I didn't try any more because one of the restaurants I ended up going back to 2 more times and the B&B I was staying at served HUGE breakfasts, so I only ever had to worry about dinner. This book was invaluable. I urge anyone going to Montreal, Toronto or New York City to grab a copy of this book to help them navigate through the often difficult process of finding good, clean food for a reasonable price in a city they are visiting. Everything was exactly as stated in the book. No meal was over $15. Every restaurant was clean and the staff courteous. Also, the store fronts were unassuming so the idea that I could've found these on my own is ridiculous. This book is worth every penny. 5 Stars!! Thank you Cheap Thrills.

Book is great, software related to the book is not.......2006-12-09

The graphical presentations and practical explanations are very helpful to valuation practitioners. I was so impressed I purchased the related software that is promoted in and modeled after the book. It never functioned correctly, and after a week of trying to reach technical support I finally reached them and they didn't really try to resolve the software's Visual Basic malfunction. Book is great, but ignore it's promotion of the software.

Having read his sixth edition, I was impressed enough with the 10th edition that I use it for the college class I teach. Unlike most books in this area, Dr. Helfert's book is easy to read and VERY practitioner oriented. I truly believe that if you have an interest in financial analysis, either as an investor or from the perspective of running your own organization, this is the single most valuable resource you could own. If I didn't believe that was true, I'd have my students using a different book.

The Few, The Proud, The Engineers!.......2006-03-07

The title above refers to the fact that there are VERY few memoirs, diaries or published letters relating to the engineers in the Civil War, even though the engineers were considered the "elite" of the army. "Bridge Building in Wartime" is a great addition to the literature of the engineers. As a field officer, Brainerd was "in the know" about many behind the scenes occurrences in the 50th New York Volunteer Engineers. Because the memoir was not for publication, but written chiefly for his son, it contains many honest and frank comments about his colleagues and superior officers that might not have seen the light of day had his reminiscences been published while he lived.
Ed Malles, the editor, needs to be thanked for bringing Brainerd's memoir to the public. He does a good job of explaining things Brainerd takes for granted in the memoirs. The only disappointment is that the memoirs end about the time the siege of Petersburg begins in June of 1864. Hopefully, the rest of the manuscript (if available) will be found and brought to light in time...
I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the War Between the States and especially for those who want to know more about the war fought by the engineers.

Unique and Useful.......2004-12-28

There is nothing like this book out there. You can search library online catalogues forever and not find articles and books on topics relating to Moslem women as neatly arranged as this book. It is limited to things published before 1995 or so but that is plenty for starters. Titles by Moslem women are especially welcome; not enough attention has been directed at efforts by the women to speak for themselves instead of having men dictate the religion for them.

A time capsule of reviews of Ella through the years ..........2005-01-19

This book is a must have for fans of Ella, the redoubtable first lady of jazz who could take even a trifle of a song and turn it into a gem with her distinctly buoyant, sunny, sure, fluid and gorgeous voice.

Ella was Frank Sinatra's favorite female vocalist -- for "The Voice" to single her out for this kind of acclaim was, and is, praise of the highest order. For all her talent, for all her celebrity and acclaim, however, Ella Fitzgerald ultimately remained a very private figure, an enigma to most, owing to her extreme shyness. This book gives glimpses not only into the modest woman behind the huge voice, but also the way she came up in the ranks through hardscrabble, honest work and the boosters in her life who recognized the greatness in her -- and made sure the world heard it.

The book is a compendium of commentary (reviews and reminiscences) published throughout her career. It is clear that Ella's talent was recognized during her own time, though many of the details of her personal life with its various disappointments were shrouded -- sublimated, perhaps, so that she could focus on the thing that made Ella the happiest -- singing. Sing she did, like very few others, pouring out her heart and the sunshine that gladdened the hearts of legions of fans (and still does today). If you don't yet know Ella's work -- or if you do -- this book is worth a read. And if you *don't* know Ella's work, don't waste any more time! The woman was almost supernaturally gifted with pipes of gold.

Great overview of a lifetime career........2002-08-22

This book is a compilation of articles, linear notes & book excerpts plus a selected discography and bibliography of Ella Fitzgerald, "The First Lady of Jazz."
Follows her from orphan to icon - gives you an oversight of how the singer was discovered in Harlem and rose to be the highest-paid jazz singer in the world.
Not an actual biography this book collects writings about Ella Fitzgerald and her career from a variety of sources and follows her achievements over the years.

Boring........2002-03-04

I don't know if it's this kind of "essay collection" book that I don't like, but now I'm looking for a more complete biography on Ella. But the text is most of the time very journalisticand boring, and way too positive to sound like a biography. I should have paid attention to the title "seven decades of commentary". My bad.
