Hits all the points.......2001-02-26
Susan Richards does a good job with the subject. She doesn't just tell you what to find out about your parent's finances but also discusses thoughtfully how to approach your parents on the topic. She addresses the psychological aspects of these issues.
One caveat: the book does not address how to handle your parents' finances if there are too few assets. For instance, it may not provide many answers for adult children of very poor parents. The book assumes your parents have at least some assets to protect/manage.
Much of the information applies to all, though. I'm sending copies of this book to my brothers and sisters even though it will be several years before we need it.

Book Description
Francis Bicknell Carpenter wrote Six Months at the White House after the unexpected popularity of a series of articles published in the New York Independent relating to Abraham Lincoln following his assassination. Carpenter, a Civil War portrait painter, was originally hired to capture President Lincoln in the picture, First Reading of the Emancipation Proclamation before the Cabinet. During the six months occupied in painting this picture, Carpenter enjoyed constant interaction with the President, as well as the various members of his Cabinet. Lincoln was enthusiastic in helping Carpenter, even letting him use the state dining room as his studio.
The incidents given were not in any sense isolated exceptions to the daily routine of Mr. Lincoln's life. The aim of the author was to portray the man as he was revealed to him, without any attempt at idealization. Carpenter has woven into the book personal reminiscences from various individuals, published and unpublished, which bear intrinsic evidence of the genuineness of the great man, Abraham Lincoln.
Written in a spirit of enthusiasm and affection, Six Months at the White House is a simple, matter-of-fact record of daily experience and observation, fragmentary but true, in all essential particulars of life in the White House as observed by Carpenter from February to August 1864. This edition is a facsimile reprint, As Published in 1866. A great gift for any Lincoln History buff.

Book Description
All the books written on Céline so far were biographies, with more or less reliable facts to support the life story of that mega-star. No book has really achieved to be precise, factual and reliable (except the English biography I contributed to correct).
No book can be used as an ultimate reference tool for the facts around one of the most extraordinary careers in the show business history. No book can be picked up by a fan or a reporter on a deadline and serve as the reference for all the achievements of "la p'tite québécoise".
That's the objective of that book I'm proposing. I want to create a book that will be able to serve as a reference and tool with confidence that the facts are reliable.
A book for the average fan to get fully impressed by the achievements of Céline A book for the die-hard fan to check up and improve his knowledge on Céline facts A book for the collector to check out how to improve his collection with reliable reference numbers A book for the journalist in need of a unique and reliable source for his work A book for music professionals to do serious research work A book for record sellers to better evaluate the value of different items A book for the Awards fan to compare Céline distinctions with other artists A book like no one else has done for any artist. The concept seems to be ambitious, and when you see the page count, you'll think it's impossible to do... yet I have more than half of it already done and ready to publish.
About the page count... who would consider seriously a "reference" book that is a hundred pages thick? Céline had a very rich career of 21 years, she started from nothing and ended as being #1 in two languages at the same time around the world. That cannot be related and expressed completely in a small book, at least certainly not with the factual reference it has.

Great book for the collectors.......2005-08-02
Hi I think this is a great book for the collector, not for the "I'm just a fan" fan. I've used this book myself as a source of information for our own website (www.celinedion.nl). Translated the information and sometimes add some info to it. I admit there are a few mistakes. But that still makes it a great book, I'm using it a lot really it's always on my desk so I can grap it when I need it. For me it is like a Céline Dion dictionairy, even sometimes I just joke about it that it is one of my "Céline"schoolbook :)
Don't Spend Your Money.......2005-02-09
I think I now know more about the person who wrote this book than I do about Celine. Buddy, no one cares!
According to Mr. Beauregard, Sony and the entire music media business would crumble and collapse without him. His "passion" for Celine goes far beyond being a fan and straight into obsession. I think it would serve Ms. Dion well to post a guard outside her door when this guy is around.
There is some interesting stuff in the book, but it's nothing that's not in any of the other books about Celine Dion.
It gets one star because zero was not an option..........2004-12-04
Sylvain Beauregard is WIDELY known to die-hard (and average) Celine fans as having a very large ego, not shutting his mouth, and insulting every other Celine fan out there. Take the "Syl" off, and you have his real identity. I have never read this book, and I never will. Endorsing this man and his work is an insult to Celine herself. Sylvain says he has all these contacts with Celine, her staff, etc. but he has never met her, which I find very odd. If you REALLY want to know about Celine, read her AUTHORIZED biography and autobiography. If you really love and admire Celine, DO NOT humor this man.
Slightly flawed, but no less informative........2004-08-10
"Passion Celine Dion: The Book" is, to begin with, the contents of the old "Passion Celine Dion" website. Though the webmaster, Sylvain Beauregard, closed the "Passion" site's virtual doors in September 2003, the extent of his work continues to live on through this book.
This book is intended neither as a biography nor as a picture book. It's a reference guide, containing exhaustive information on the singer's releases of albums, singles, b-sides and chart information. While several b-sides, rare songs and remixes are not listed, the author does his best to cover as much as possible in the 244 pages of information.
In fact, the only thing missing from the book that was on the website are the lyrics and translations. However, that is understandable as the lyrics are under copyright and cannot be reproduced for the purposes of gaining a profit. The information contained within the pages of this book go from her humble beginnings to March 2002 -- the release of the "A New Day Has Come" single and album.
I, for one, have gotten as much use out of this book as I did with the website. The book provides for at least one of my reasons for visiting the "Passion" site. One reason was for the extensive discography information, which I have since expanded upon for my own Celine Dion fansite. The other reason I visited his website was for the lyrics, which I am also working on providing in my website.
This book is not for the new fan. It is for one who's already a diehard, like myself. Forget what you've heard about Sylvain and judge the book on its own merit. It has much to offer, especially for those who are curious as to the statistical data of her career up to Spring 2002, the music-oriented geeks, and the fans who must have EVERYTHING pertaining to her on their book and CD shelves. However, if you want a biographical account of her lifestory, you will want to look elsewhere.
Passion Celine Dion Lost On This Reader.......2004-04-10
I have many problems with this book. I am indeed a fan of Celine Dion's, yet, I feel too many meaningless boring books have been written about her life. I am not a huge Dion fan yet I have read most of the English texts on her life.
I am not farmilar with who this author is and I do not understand why he goes on and on about his education, his affiliation with Dion, and the work he put into his self proclaimed "Best website ever on the singer". This indeed does not sell the book, it only builds up to what I have found to be a pointless factual boring book. This book is great if you are interested in chart performance and album sales.
If you are looking for a great read on Dion's life stick with the Authorized Biography or the book that Dion wrote herself, much more entertaining. This book is much hype and leaves the reader totally dissapointed and confused about why they purchased it. Please don't waste your money! I feel this book is a product of some type of twisted obsession and it's almost like this person thinks Dion owes him something because he simply created a website for her???? Did that make her the global superstar she is today?? I think not! Yet, he has used her name and image to further his own projects and has made money off Dion's name. This book is no better than the other trash that has been written about the singer. Please, don't waste your money.
Book Description
A compelling account of the development of a great artist, and a portrait of the tragic character of an entire era
The uncompromising achievement of Elias Canetti has been matched by few writers this century. Canetti worked brilliantly in many forms, but the three volumes that comprise his autobiography are where his genius is perhaps most evident. The first volume, The Tongue Set Free, presents the events, personalities, and intellectual forces that fed Canetti's early creative development. The Torch in My Ear explores his admiration for the first great mentor of his adulthood, Karl Krauss, and also describes his first marriage. The final volume, The Play of the Eyes, is set in Vienna between 1931 and 1937, with the European catastrophe imminent; here he vividly portrays relationships with Hermann Broch and Robert Musil, among others.
Customer Reviews:
Great for the Specialist, Good for the Casual Reader.......2005-09-04
Canetti, a Nobel Prize winner in Literature (1981), is little known but his works and ideas remain for the interested reader. This autobiography is a long read but worth it for those interested in early 20th century Europe and in the German literature of that period.
The highlights of the book are the fluid, likable prose and the rich characterization offered. Canetti draws some very memorable characters, some of which went on to people his writings. The most valuable aspect of the book will be to those with a passion for German literature because Canetti offers his personal impressions and insights about many of his era's great writers, especially Bloch and Musil. He also charts the inspiration and development of his own great works.
Reading some of the other reviews I think is misleading. Nice a read as this book is, I hardly found it to be the masterpiece that so many others claim it to be. It is a major investment of reading time and should be taken only by those with particular interest in the subject matter. Pound for pound, I think Canetti's most famous writings (Crowds and Power, Auto-Da-Fe) are a much better introduction to this thinker. The insights he offers in his long autobiography are relatively sparse. And, as warm and personal as the style of the autobiography is, I would hardly class it `candid.' He doesn't get racy in any way; one would assume his love affairs were all about literary conversations. And the impressions he gives are usually reserved and non-confrontational. One reads about his mother's incredibly controlling behavior but never does he rail against the irrationality of it and express what are surely his true feelings about her. I expected a lot more about the burgeoning Fascism and atmosphere of horror that was rapidly closing in on Europe in the 1930s. Instead, all of this is represented in inchoate concerns about the future. I would have greatly appreciated hearing about his own flight from the Nazis and his feelings about that whole nightmare. He stopped the autobiography well before WWII leaving it as nothing but a looming specter.
But, all in all, it is a nicely done autobiography. His respect for his mentor, Dr. Sonne, speaks volumes about the missing father in his life. His sum-up of Dr. Sonne's agenda gives a wonderful design for the book as a whole:
"What a man touched upon, he should take with him. If he forgot it, he should be reminded. What gives a man worth is that he incorporates everything he has experienced. This includes the countries where he has lived, the people whose voices he has heard. It also takes in his origins, if he can find out something about them. By this he [Sonne] meant not only one's private experience but everything concerning the time and place of one's beginnings. The words of a language one may have spoken and heard only as a child imply the literature in which it flowered. The story of a banishment must include everything that happened before it as well as the rights subsequently claimed by the victims. Others had fallen before and in different ways; they too are part of the story. It is hard to evaluate the justice of such a claim to history. To Sonne's mind history was eminently the area of guilt. We should know not only what happened to our fellow men in the past but also what they were capable of. We should know what we ourselves are capable of. For that, much knowledge is needed; from whatever direction, at whatever distance knowledge offers itself, one should reach out for it, keep it fresh, water it and fertilize it with new knowledge."
I don't know anything better........2001-10-04
I have never known better literature. I myself am not a good writer so I'll just say is this: Canetti heightend my sensitivity towards life - fundamentally. His autobiography showed me how complex and interesting life can be, if you see it through a mind like Canetti's who is able to describe his perception in a more profound yet boad way than anybody and who chose a corresponding path of life. I'm glad I read him while still in college, because otherwise I had not known how narrowminded I really was before I met Canetti.
My favorite book.
(PS. English is not my first language so please excuse whatever you don't like about my writing.)
A Genius Way Ahead of his Time.......2001-08-08
I first read Auto-da-Fe on the recommendation of my German teacher at school. Even then, I was astounded by Canetti's humour and intelligence. I was delighted to come across a rather shabby hardbound copy of The Torch in my Ear on sale for £1.00 outside Surrey County Council Library recently.
I settled down to reacquaint myself with Canetti and, like a reunion with an old friend, I was overjoyed to rediscover his warmth, his wit, and his searing intellect. For such a clever man, though, Canetti is still aware he has a reading public eager to hear tales of the famous names, with whom he rubbed shoulders during his very brief time in Berlin. To learn that the great George Grosz was indeed a misogynist and Brecht a slave to fashion gave me that wry smile that I remembered from reading Canetti before.
For anyone wanting to gain a really deep insight into Central Europe in the 1920's and 30's, this is the book to read and not the titillating, ever-so-British accounts of Christopher Isherwood.
a perfect piece of literary fiction.......2000-03-27
what a book, what a writer! having read plenty of literary autobiographies, i am still stunned at the depth and insight of these three volumes. the first, tongue set free, is the most lyrical; the other two focus more on young canetti's developement as a writer and thinker. such is canetti's art that only after reading the books several times the reader notices all the things he is not told... although this autobiography is a great source of enjoyment to everyone who is interested in literature, it should be read with a bit of caution: never to forget that this is, despite everything, literary fiction. i am not implying that canetti is lying (he is not), but he has more purpose than just presenting his times and lifes, and some scenes (like the describtion of café museum) seem to be just describtions while they are full or literary quotes etc. i think it is this that sets canetti's work apart from other writers of the era.
Wonderful: A High Point of 20th Century Literature.......1999-04-20
I'm at a loss to convey how great this book is. I think anyone who enjoys literature and fine writing should read it. Canetti was one of the leading writers and intellectuals of the 20th century, and he brings all his formidable talent and insight to this work.
The biography is excellent on many levels. First, it works as a simple biography. Canetti led a very interesting life, and he does an excellent job presenting the important events and influences that shaped him. Because of this, it is a required read for anyone who has enjoyed his other major works (_Auto Da Fe_ and _Crowds and Power_.)
Second, it is great literature. Canetti was an excellent writer, clear and lucid without being bland, with a wonderful ability to see and present the fundamental elements of individuals. His memoirs are full of rich and fascinating characters, which Canetti is able to present either in a few quick strokes or in full detail, depending on their role in his life.
Third, it is a fascinating record of the time. Canetti came of age during and after WWI, and spent much of his early adulthood in the intellectual turmoil of interwar Vienna. Canetti focuses mainly on the intellectual life, describing his interactions with Robert Musil, Bertolt Brecht, Hermann Broch, Karl Kraus, Isaac Babel, and others. Inevitably, though, the memoirs also give some details of everyday existence in central Europe during this chaotic period.
The memoir is not told as a single continuous narrative. Instead, the book gives a series of vivid incidents and characters, the things that Canetti remembered about his life. Because of this, his memoir has a universally high level of power and detail, without long flat stretches of filler. It was his autobiography that finally generated enough support for Canetti to be awarded the Nobel Prize. In my opinion it is is best, most accessible work, and one which can stand with the greatest of 20th century literature.
