Product Description
The Mediterranean coast of Egypt stretches for 1,000 kilometers from Sallum in the west to Rafah in the east, exhibiting a variety of littoral landscapes--rocky shores and white sand beaches where the Western Desert meets the sea, low-lying wetlands along the edge of the Nile Delta, and rolling dunes in northern Sinai. Along the way are Egypt's second city, Alexandria, the battlefield of al-Alamein, and the historic town of Rashid. With this new fully revised edition of their popular guide, Jenny Jobbins and Mary Megalli traverse the entire coast, guiding the curious visitor on what to see and what to know, where to swim and where to stay, how to get there and how to get around. The guide is an informative companion for all travelers, whether their interest lies in sightseeing or nostalgia-seeking, archaeology or birdwatching. It offers information on recent excavations, submerged antiquities, places of interest, museums, hotels, and restaurants, as well as a comprehensive history of the coastal region and facts about its geography, wildlife, and natural environment. Detailed route and travel information are included for motorists, as are listings of bus, rail, and air services. Illustrated with detailed maps and 30 color photographs--and now revised with the most up-to-date information and practical advice--this convenient guidebook is an ideal companion for anyone traveling to this multifaceted region of Egypt.

Book Description
In recent years, the absence of frontier checks has enabled the elimination of millions of customs documents. On the other hand, it has required the introduction of new taxable transactions and administrative formalities. In this book, members of Coopers & Lybrand Global Indirect Tax Network analyse the main features of the new rules. In clear, practical terms, A Guide to VAT in the EU explains how each European Community (EC) country has implemented the Council Directive 91/680/EC and amending directives. This update includes information on the three recently added European Union (EU) members (Austria, Finland and Sweden) and a commentary on the Council Directive 95/7/EC, applicable as from 1 January 1995 (which introduces definitive changes to the Sixth Directive and amends the 1993 transitional regime). Appendices include tables and a specially prepared integration of the Sixth Directive and the amending directives. Its succinct style makes A Guide to VAT in the EU a practical, easy-to-use guide for practitioners.

As Hippocrates said, "Leave your drugs in the chemist's pot if you can heal the patient with food." Seems people didn't listen to him, because as the U.S. Surgeon General said more than 2,000 years after him, "Two-thirds of all deaths in 1997 in this country could be attributed to diet." They'd both likely advocate the information contained in Prescription for Dietary Wellness, a massive reference aimed at preventing and treating disease through diet. The Balchs, authors of the 3-million-plus bestseller Prescription for Nutritional Healing, which focuses mainly on supplements and herbs, have created another masterpiece. This book gives a solid education in nutrition basics, with references to the latest research. It also includes flavorful, antioxidant-packed recipes, and adds advice that has been proven effective for treating various ailments using specific foods and supplements. The book also includes:
- Charts with warning signs of disease and nutrient deficiency, along with guidelines to help start the healing process
- Charts that detail the nutrient needs of various organs, and which foods best supply the nutrients
- Lengthy chapters on specific categories of foods, such as beans, cruciferous vegetables, oils, and grains, explaining how best to cook them and the health benefits they confer
- More than 100 pages of quick, healthy, mostly low-fat recipes designed to pack the most nutritional punch for the calories
The Balchs add advice about live juice and herbal preparations and cleansing (i.e., fasting and enemas, including a specific six-day cleansing diet). While this guide can feel a bit overwhelming at times (there are so many nutrients to consider, so many veggies and whole grains to consume), it's certainly not too technical, even for folks who could use a copy of Nutrition for Dummies, and it certainly succeeds in its mission of helping foster better dietary habits for good health.
Book Description
Like its companion books--the number-one bestselling Prescription for Nutritional Healing and the newer Prescription for Herbal Healing--Prescription for Dietary Wellness offers authoritative information that is research-based and clearly written, making it easy for the reader to quickly find the subjects in which he or she is interested and to incorporate the dietary recommendations into his or her daily life.
Updates in this second edition include:
 phytochemicals and antioxidants
 foods that boost immunity
how to choose the most nutritious foods
 "standout" healing foods
how to design a diet for your individual optimal health, taking into account special dietary needs such as those of women, children, vegetarians, and others
 food combining
diet-based healing techniques such as juicing, fasting, and detoxifying
how to avoid potential dietary dangers, including threats to water safety, foodborne diseases, food additives, food irradiation, antibiotics, genetically engineered foods, and undesirable substances such as caffeine, cholesterol, and sugar.
While not a cookbook, Prescription for Dietary Wellness also includes a number of easy, wholesome recipes and advice on cooking methods. It is a complete, practical guide to eating for good health.
Customer Reviews:
Content okay . . . Details Missing!.......2006-05-31
I have searched long and hard for a reference book and this was a let down. I felt the content was mediocre at best and the details behind their "research" and claims were missing. I found a better resource on Inner Health that was very impressive at librarydepot.com It contained a Nutrition Benefits Chart that is unlike anything on the market.
confused by content.......2005-05-18
I was greatly impressed with "Prescription for Nutritional Healing" and when buying this book had that in mind. Both Ms. Balch and Dr. Balch (husband?) produced a very informative work with that title and I'm very thankful for it, regardless of my thoughts toward "...Dietary Wellness".
I picked up a copy of this book today and have been reading it. I was struck by the counsel for total avoidance Ms. Balch gave to all forms of Capsicum (pepper), and the advice that one should avoid both black and white pepper, as well as rice.
I found no remarks as to why this should be the case (which would seem a no-brainer considering the obvious health benefits of Capsicum, assorted Piperaceae and rice in ones diet). 'Leaves me somewhat mystified.
Excellent reference book.......2004-02-10
This book should be an intregal part of anyone's library, because it is full of information for every being's (including pets) health. The information is vital for one's wellness.
empowering information.......2000-08-18
I fond the information in Balch's book empowering. I try to eat a
balanced diet, but I can tell my body isn't getting "enough"
. Her book, although poorly organized in places, gave me the
knowledge about which vitamins, minerals and supplements would be best
for me to add to my diet in order to give it "enough"....
Great Reference Book.......2000-04-11
I have both this book and the other(Pres. for Nutritional Healing). I have found this book to be a great resource. I recommend it to all my friends and family whom I am trying to turn on to nutrition. It is a great "starter book" for people just into diet and nutrition and want to be educated about the things they put into their bodies. It is very informative and an easy read. It is a must for everybody out there wanting to learn about food, their bodies, and how they interact. A wonderful book.

Valuable Biographical information on the Bach family.......2005-01-13
The Bach family, perhaps Germany's most illustrious musical name, included an amazing variety of musicians. With chapters on most of the major Bach composers, I found the chapters on J.S. Bach, C.P.E. Bach and W.F. Bach especially interesting.
There are also some valuable biographies of earlier Bach's such as Johann Christoph Bach, a contemporary with Pachabel and Johann Michael Bach, the father-in-law of Johann Sebastion.
With each composer, a comprehensive list is provided of the extant as well as compositions known to have been composed but are apparently lost.
Anyone wanting to understand music in Germany during the baroque era will want to check out this book.

What a sad little man.......2006-06-22
What the author of the book lacks in logic he makes up in angry rethoric. Feder simply makes no attempt at following the most elementary use of logic. His conclusions are pure dogma. For example, he (rightfully) criticizes Nazism and Communism for causing much horror throughout their respective history. However, when discussing Christianity, Feder argues that it cannot be judged because of all the bloodshed and wars it has caused because human beings distorted a good idea. In other words, it is ok to use empirical evidence to criticize ideologies I don't like, but not those I like. In other passages, Feder suggests that conservatives are a tiny persecuted minority. Which is all fine and well if it wasn't for the fact that they control the presidency, the House, the Senate, and the Supreme Court. The whole book is littered with similar examples of glaring contradictions. A classic case of "my mind is made up. don't confuse me with facts."
Great for non-Jews.......2006-03-24
As Marxism/Liberalism dominates all platforms of religious, political and social areas of todays "civilized" society Mr. Feder's writings place light onto the fraud and misguided direction of social, political and legal morality. This book is a fabulous disection of today's "freedoms/right" as propigated by those on the G0dless, immoral and anti-moral absolute activist Left. Might I suggest a few books also explaining this trend and the reasons behind them: "The Perestroika Deception" - A. Golitsyn, "Naked Communist" - Skousen, "Decline of the West" - Spengler and "None Dare Call It Education" - Stormer. A good education behind the fascist leftward shift today and the guiding forces of it. I'd also suggest reading "The Communist Manifesto" - Marx. The outcome is to enlighten those to the end goals on the misguided and propagated Liberal/left. "The Professors" and "UnHoly Alliance" - D. Horowitz are also political reads to inform the reader as to many of the causes of todays grim political and moral situations.
Is Feder joking? Is it all a put-on?.......2005-09-11
"Can an eleven-year old tell the difference?" To quote Feder himself there. Oh, think of the children.
First thing I did when I received the book was read the back. Includes endorsements from Pat Robertson and Oliver L. North. The guy who recently got in some trouble for calling for the assassination of Hugo Chavez, a democratically elected president of a sovereign nation endorses this book. And Oliver North, that other guy who secretly and illegally sold arms to Iran in order to make money to overthrow Daniel Ortega's democratically elected government in Nicaragua.
So, this book is endorsed by high-level criminal masterminds and wannabes. But, those are just endorsements the publisher added, not the actual book. I'll still give it a chance.
Don Feder opposes the pagans of America. Pagans are essentially defined here to mean all those who aren't Judeo-Christian. Particularly those who are moral-relativists and those with poor work-ethic. These two traits go hand in hand for the pagans apparently.
One of Feder's most interesting examples of a pagan is Frank Zappa. Zappa has actually talked about striving to act like a true pagan, so Feder seems to be onto something. Just, apparently, the wrong thing. Zappa was that guy who wrote a lot of really complex and interesting music. Well he didn't just write a lot, he wrote a tremendous amount. Being an employee for Zappa was compared to being in basic training for the Marines. And Zappa was most demanding to himself. So work ethic's apparently not missing in this pagan. And then also every step of the way in Zappa's highly prolific life his resolute ethics was left in his wake. He espoused free-association for all and commonly railed against the situational ethics he saw around him. This is probably why Zappa's music was listened to behind the Iron Curtain. Listened to surrepetitiously by people who saw hope and beauty in Zappa's music when they were under the oppressive control of the Soviets. Lithuania even has a publically-installed bust of him in Vilnius commemorating the joy he brought people of the country. But, as Feder says, he named his daughter Moon Unit, so he doesn't have any credibility. I guess because Moon Unit is a weird name and people who do weird, anti-social things like that just gotta be no good, socially-destructive pagans. Like the Rolling Stones.
According to Feder the Rolling Stones made this song called Murder by Numbers which advocates the killing of family members. Oh, but Feder is wrong twice in one sentence. But this is no suprise at this point of the book(about three quarters through). The Police wrote that song. And is doesn't advocate killing family members. It actually expresses the evil of some politicians and how they kill people. But talking about murder and telling stories of murder must be advocating murder I guess is what Feder is saying. Maybe because eleven-year-olds can't tell the difference? Perhaps someone should tell whoever wrote the Old Testament this. Seems to be a lot of murder and sodomy in that thing. Eleven-year-olds might start sodomizing and murdering because of it. The author should probably convert to an Abrahamic religion...but not Islam, maybe just Judaism or Christianity, and then repent for such disregard of the social fabric of America.
The most interesting bit of information Feder supplies is a poll. A "1989" poll where something over 60% of people responded that they believe life starts at conception and another something over 60% of those still believe it would be alright to kill that unborn life at the advice of a doctor. But alas, no more information on where this startling poll came from. Does anyone know?
There's a lot more of the same. Bizarre characterizations of people, statements of facts I've never heard with no references to check and statements of facts I know to be wrong. The only thing that seriously sticks with me from this book though is him mentioning Frank Zappa.
Why can't Feder make something which critiques immorality without being cynical, like Zappa's satires? Zappa questioned moral relativism and the evils and stupidity in society while remaining hopeful and positive. Feder looks at the world and can do nothing but speak cynically and disrepectfully because he's apparently blind to all of the good things that are out there.
Two stars for trying to help the world, but only two because Feder should help himself before he tries to help others. Kind of like when the oxygen masks come down when the airplane depressurizes. You put your mask on first, then your kid's. Feder should try to see the good that is right there in front of him before demanding everyone look for it in Judeo-Christianity and nowhere else.
No Personal Attacks, Please - If You're Perfect, Then Throw the Stone.......2005-07-06
You can't help but love the guy. Witty, to the point, and on target, 99% - you can't ask for more than that. In my opinion, he sometimes makes things more complicated than what they are by adding lots of extraneous facts and figures, but then again, others may appreciate it, and find that interesting. At any rate, round off the the total score and you get 4 stars.
SO WHAT about his kid's problems? (with reference to another reviewer). Even the best teachers and philosophers and great thinkers have had occasional family problems. Take Einstein, for instance. He disrespected his wife terribly, and didn't know how to maintain a positive relationship with her. But if he were to write a book today, I would not criticize his book by pointing to his private life. That would be wrong. Also, if people really knew Einstein's politics, many would not consider him so smart. However, there's a difference between being "smart" and being "intelligent". The man was intelligent, no question about it.
As another example, if it were a requirement that religious preachers be perfect, then none could teach. Even the most hypocritical preacher in the business, can still preach the truth, and benefit those who take that truth seriously. IT MATTERS LESS IF HE IS "HYPOCRITICAL" IN HIS PERSONAL LIFE, BUT MORE THAT HE SPEAKS THE TRUTH.
Hypocrisy matters mainly when a person is running for office, or holds a judicial seat, and they try to impose laws than would likely not affect themselves or their loved ones. It also matters when you investigate their voting record, and you find that it doesn't match the so-called position that they claim to have.
All in all, I highly recommend this author's book, and his others, as well. Not only is his perspective unique and interesting, the information he imparts is vital knowledge that needs and deserves to be heard across the board. I like reading his writings so much that I've signed up for his newsletter, and I occasionally go to his website for addition news and comments. It is well worth the read.
Rantings of a hypocrite.......2002-06-20
Don Feder was so busy focusing on other people's families when he wrote this book that his own son got expelled from the entire state public school system as a danger to his fellow classmates. Feder goes apoplectic over gays and lesbians, Dr. Benjamin Spock, Puerto Ricans, and anyone else who doesn't fit his narrow view of what is right, but would his own skills as a parent survive such scrutiny? In on piece, Feder rants about how "father-absent homes" produce children more likely to commit crimes and engage in violent behavior. ...

"What does it mean to be a Conservative Jew?".......2002-10-08
Compiled by Neil Gillman (Aaron Rabinowitz and Simon H. Rifkind Associate Professor of Jewish Philosophy, The Jewish Theological Seminary of America), Conservative Judaism: The New Century is a informed and informative collection of anecdotes, testimonies, black-and-white photographs, and more covering the history of Conservative Judaism, its interaction with the Reform and Orthodox branches of Judaism, its influence within the nation of Israel, and a great deal more. A highly recommended addition to personal and academic Judaic Studies reference collection and supplemental reading lists, Conservative Judaism is a welcome and extensive history and combined with individual insights providing as thorough an answer as possible to the difficult question, "What does it mean to be a Conservative Jew?"
Not Orthodox, Not Reform.......2002-08-19
Rabbi Gillman provides a fascinating history of the origins and development of the Conservative Movement, including its struggles to articulate a philosophical/theological basis for its position somewhere between Orthodox literalism and Reform individualism. I was unaware that the Reconstructionist Movement had its origins in those struggles (and indeed that Reconstructionist thought still plays a significant role in the Conservative articulation of its mission). I found the chapters on Conservative decision-making (concerning the admission of women to the rabbinate and the drafting of Emet Ve-Emunah) particularly enlightening in the emphasis on the role of the community and the viability of minority positions.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the origins of the modern American Jewish movements, as well as anyone interested in the Conservative Movement in particular. Rabbi Gillman admits that he is a partisan of the Conservative solution to the dilemma of practicing Judaism in the modern world, but he is generally fair and unbiased in his discussion of the other movements (although like most non-Orthodox he is unhappy with the role of the Orthodox rabbis in Israel). The book is well written and engaging, striking just the right balance between theoretical discussions and "mini-biographies" of the leaders of the Movement. Rabbi Gillman's ultimate concern is with how to nurture a community of committed Jews in the modern world, and that concern informs every page of this informative and thought-provoking book.
Enlightening, thorough and objective historyý.......2001-01-14
"Reader from Stony Brook" and "William Adam Friedman" (reviewers here) have summarized this volume `dead on.' They missed a couple of things that impressed me, however. First, the selection of photographs and illustrations (all in black and white) is astounding. These flawlessly complement the adjacent text, and deserve special mention for their historical relevance. (Rabbi Gillman gives appropriate credit in the Acknowledgements!). As a work of history this volume is excellent - those outside Conservatism (and outside of Judaism) will find it of permanent reference value. A second feature I liked is that the significant figures of modern Judaism get both photos (or equivalent) and historical sidebars (set outside the text as if Talmudic commentary). From the 19th century peer the faces of Moses Mendelssohn, Zechariah Frankel, Samson Raphael Hirsch, Isaac Mayer Wise, Alexander Kohut, and Sabato Morais. A dozen more figures from the 20th century American Judaism appear on these pages in their chronological turn. Third, readers should be aware that Rabbi Gillman is on the faculty of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, and served on the commission that drafted the 1988 Statement of Principles of Conservative Judaism. Consequently he personally knew many of the giants of the Conservative movement - his insights into personalities and events are keen (and sometimes sharp!). And finally, there is, interestingly enough, quite a lot about Reform, Orthodox, and Revisionist figures and ideas. When Rabbi Gillman's explains how Conservative Judaism diverges from other currents (sometimes forcefully) he is fair and factual in describing these differences. He even spends several pages elucidating the origins of the Union for Traditional Judaism, which split from the Conservative movement in 1990. This book is a bargain; having read it I would have paid triple the price (though I'm glad I didn't!)
The best popular history of Conservative Judaism.......1999-01-08
This book answers every question you wanted to know about how Conservative Judaism developed, what its theological and legal principles are, and how it differs from the other Jewish movements (Reform, Orthodox and Reconstructionist). More importantly, it starts off with a summary of how all how the Jewish movements we know today developed. Many readers will be surprised to learn that Orthodox Judaism isn't the oldest movement - Reform Judaism is! Reform Judaism developed in the early 1800s in reaction to the Enlightment movement and Emancipation. Due to the radical positions taken by its founders, a reaction took place in the rest of the Jewish community. One reaction led to Samson Rapahel Hirsch developing Neo-Orthodoxy, the progenitor of Modern Orthodox Judaism. Another led to Agudah Yisrael and Haredism (Ultra-Orthodox). And most importantly (for this reader), the next step was the most vital. In response to the extremes taken by both the Reformers and Orthodox, Positive-Historical Judaism was then developed by Zechariah Frankel (Germany). This was the progentor of Conservative Judaism. Indeed, the Conservative movement is still sometimes called the Positive-Historical school of Judaism. This book is written by an insider, a professor of philosophy at the movement's primary seminary, and it is surprisingly frank and objective. The movements inherent tensions, strengths and weaknesses are all analyzed and discussed. Issues such as Zionism, women as rabbis, homosexuality, and the observance of the laity are discussed in an open fashion. For those who enjoy this book, or are interested in Conservative Judaism, I would also strongly suggest these two books: "A Guide to Jewish Religious Practice" by Rabbi Issac Klein, and, "Conservative Judaism: Our ancestors to our descendents", published by the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism (USCJ), by Rabbi Elliot N. Dorff

Book Description
Lubavitchers are active in the civic life of their communities and so should be considered good citizens by advocates of participatory democracy. However, their obviously nonliberal worldview tends to elicit rancor in precisely those quarters. The notion that democratic political institutions require the support of a democratic political culture is pervasive in political theory. Many scholars treat democratic virtues and liberal values as synonymous. As a result, nonliberal groups are viewed with suspicion: if they reject liberal values, they are also seen as rejecting democratic ones. Jan Feldman focuses on a subset of Chassidic Judaism known as Lubavitch, or ChaBad, to explore this assumption.
Lubavitchers make an excellent test case, she explains, because they are informed, politically active, and democratic on the one hand, yet embrace nonliberal values on the other. Unlike the Amish or Hutterites, they do not rely on rural isolation for group survival but function remarkably well in secular, urban settings. They embrace rather than withdraw from political life. Although they do not use the state to promote their worldview to a wider audience, their entry into the public realm often generates hostility and fear.
Feldman does not claim that liberal values are irrelevant to democracy nor does she argue that all nonliberal groups are equally benign. "What Lubavitchers allow us to investigate," she writes, "is the common assumption that liberal and democratic attitudes are inextricably linked." Through numerous interviews in the centers of Lubavitch life in Montreal, New York, and Washington, D.C., she not only illuminates a group fascinating in its own right but also provides insights into long-held assumptions about the relationship between liberal and democratic values.

Load of Garbage.......2007-07-05
This book was HORRIBLE! From premise to conclusion this book really had no firm ground to stand on. What a futile exercise in intellectualism!! Look elsewhere to read about the Chabad Lubavitch sect, such as the Rebbe's Army...
Lubavitch as Hippies.......2003-10-03
I have always thought of the Lubavitch as the "Hippies" of the Hasidic movement, since they are viewed as way left by absolutely all of their Hasidic neighbors (some sects won't even talk to these "infidels", and in my observation have drawn lots of secular lefties from around the world. I'm not a Lubavitch but love em! Kinder, wiser, less judgemental people you cannot find -- the way they love G-d is admirable by all who have had a less than ideal religious background.
