Related to Jane & William Cazneau........2002-10-16
I am related to General William L.Cazneau 1807-1876 and his wife Jane McManus Cazneau 1807-1878, the subject of this book. I met the author in November 1999 in Texas. A great amount of research has gone in to this book and it took years to collect it all. I am a direct descendent of General Thomas Nugent Cazneau 1812-1873 of California, brother of William. I am sending copies to libraries and friends. God Bless You !!
I would loved to have been Jane.......2001-11-30
History is a passion of mine and this book is so very good. I can not imagine how long it took to do all this research. It gave me a different understanding of our government history. Just to think if our politions had had the foresight that Jane McManus and Aaron Burr had, Cuba, Doninican Republic, and Mexico just to name a few, could have been States today. I would love to have been Jane because she was so smart and brave. I found her one of the most fascinating persons in history. I loved this book.

A Woman's Place in the 1850's.......2001-03-23
Linda Hudson has done a wonderful job of following the travels and trials of Jane McManus Storm Cazneau from her youth in New York to her involvement in Texas land deals in the 1830's and her mission to Mexico City in the midst of the Mexican War in the 1840's to her life in Eagle Pass, Texas, (which she somehow did not at first realize was literally the middle of no where) to her exploits in Cuba and her return to New York City to play a role in the presidential campaign of 1852.
She has shown the complexity of the politics of the times especially as they relate to the question of slavery and its expansion into Texas. She has also related the very complicated life of a woman who was liberated long before being a liberated woman was considered cool. In doing so, she has created a far more complex view of society in the United States in the middle of the 19th century than many historians have uncovered...or been willing to admit to having uncovered.
It is a wonderful trip into the history not only of the United States but also of Mexico and the Caribbean that she has taken with Jane Cazneau and that she allows the reader to share.

Book Description
Are you tired of arguing with your spouse over the same old issues? Do you dream of a marriage with less conflict and more intimacy? Are you struggling under a load of resentment?
The key to creating a deeper bond in your marriage
may lie buried in your childhood.
Your early life experiences create an “intimacy imprint”–an underlying blueprint that shapes your behavior, beliefs, and expectations of all future relationships, especially your marriage. In How We Love, relationship experts Milan and Kay Yerkovich help you pinpoint the reason your marriage is struggling–and they reveal exactly what you can do about it.
Drawing on the powerful tool of attachment theory, the Yerkoviches identify four types of injured imprints that combine in marriage to trap couples in a repetitive dance of pain. As you discover how your relationship has been guided by these imprints, you’ll gain the insights you need to stop stepping on each other’s toes and instead allow yourselves to be swept along by the music of a richer, deeper relationship.

Hits the nail on the head.......2007-09-14
I've read books before that "categorize" your personality type, etc, and I have never heard anyone describe me... until I read this book. They nailed my personality or "love style", based on how I was raised. It really gave me insight into WHY I do things the way I do. And not only that, but it showed me HOW to work on those areas that need work. Great book... I am buying a copy of the book and workbook for some friends who are getting married. What better way to start off marriage, than to understand yourself better, before trying to understand someone else?! This book has also helped me understand my husband better too and be more compassionate and understanding of him. :)
This book saved our marriage!!.......2007-09-03
Being married for 29 years might prove our commitment to one another, but it by no means reveals the turmoil and hurt that has been exchanged. After seeing several counselors and reading a plethora of marriage/relationship 'self-imrovement' books, we could not seem to find the missing key to unlock the destructive patterns and 'dances' that had so encumbered our marriage. I heard Milan Yerkovich on the radio talking about this book and its accompanying workbook. I checked it out, purchased it, and we are now working through the workbook together (we each have our own copy). It has completely changed the way that we relate to one another, even after all these years. We are taking our time going through the questions, sharing with and learning things about each other that we would never have known otherwise. The change, especially in my husband, has been nothing short of amazing.
I would HIGHLY recommend this book and workbook to all couples. If more couples would use this book before going through with a divorce I dare to say that they wouldn't choose to divorce. The information contained in these pages will truly change your life!
love styles.......2007-08-29
"How we love", is an excellent book that helps you look at your styles of loving. It sheds light on why you might be having conflicts in your marriage or relationships based on the comfort you both did or did not receive as a children. It also looks at your different learned styles of emotional love and how these may clash with your spouses.
I've found it very enlightening, and plan on using the workbook soon as well.
Their overall message is resoundingly hopeful and their belief that people can change .......2007-06-06
Husband and wife Milan and Kay Yerkovich have compiled an intriguing body of counseling scenarios detailing their imprinted love styles. Thoughtfully presented, the text breeds understanding and compassion between spouses who are struggling to make their marriage work. The authors base much of their material on the premise that adults continue to live out in patterns of communication and intimacy largely based upon what they learned and experienced in their childhood home. Thus stated, the Yerkovichs offer lengthy case studies and examples of what each "love style" looks like and how it conflicts with others.
Between the two of them, this professional couple has over 25 years of pastoral counseling experience (Milan's) added to 13 years of marriage and family counseling (Kay's) --- not to mention the fact that they've learned a lot firsthand through the ups and downs of their own 33-year marriage. For openers, the Yerkovichs offer a single question upon which the foundational principle of the book is based: "Can you recall being comforted as a child after a time of emotional distress?" During the first 18 years of life, every person needs deep emotional comfort extended through meaningful touch, empathetic listening that validates feelings and some sort of soothing relief. If any of these elements are missing, then real comfort is lacking.
The authors write that roughly 75 percent of adults they surveyed did not have a single memory of receiving comfort from a primary caregiver as children. Thus, the answer to this key question will determine in large part how one responds in marriage when life gets tough. If a person was comforted early on, then they seek relationships as safe havens during times of trial. Conversely, if an individual lacked meaningful emotional comforting during childhood, reaching out for help from a mate will not come naturally. Hence, the birth of an impasse between the majority of married couples.
According to the Yerkovichs, there are five harmful love styles.
- The avoider doesn't place a lot of stock in feelings or in being comforted. He prefers space, autonomy and is highly task-oriented.
- The pleaser recoils from rejection and criticism. He moves quickly through any conflict and dreads emotional distance from his spouse.
- The vacillator is overly sensitive. Fluctuating between being angry or disappointed with others, he often feels conflicted.
- The controller responds to disorder by dominating people and situations through anger and intimidation.
- The victim takes a passive role to protect against pain yet is inwardly resentful and angry.
Following a thorough examination of each love style, the authors provide a section on the damage that results from these marriage "duets" when not properly recognized and addressed. Readers will find the various combinations both fascinating and grievous, as they observe the inner pain that both partners unwittingly unleash upon one another. In the final segment, solutions are presented through carefully constructed patterns for emotional growth and health. Individuals first must become aware of their own love styles and that of their mate's, learn to engage safely and lovingly, and then explore via active listening for eventual resolution to problems.
The Yerkovichs supply thought-provoking, if sometimes painful, exercises for couples to engage in, yet their overall message is resoundingly hopeful and their belief that people can change through this methodical system is convincing.

Where is the hidden camera?.......2007-04-29
After reading just a few chapters of How We Love, I got the distinct impression that someone had been following me around, reading my mail, and using me as subject material for a book. Milan and Kay show great insight into the intricate "dance" of our relationship with our spouse. Although much of the information in their book is gleened from other sources, they have woven that information, their personal experiences, and examples from therapy sessions into a wonderful tool to improve the relationship between a husband and wife. Reading this book has prompted new conversations relating to our past, and our family relationships.

A Must have with the book.......2007-04-14
I purchased this book set for my husband (& I) for Christmas. I also bought a large blank journal book. We have been working through each chapter of the book/workbook while answering in the journal (me on the right and my hubby on the left). It has been PIVITOL in our relationship and has really helped us change the way we not only relate to each other, but has helped reframe our total thinking & forgiving process. If you are going to start somewhere - this is the place to do it. Milan is also featured on "New Life Live" radio - and he is the 'real deal.' It will be the best money (and time) you have ever spent!
Wonderful eye opening book about how we connect.......2007-01-19
This is a must read for anyone having marital issues. I believe this book brought to light many of the reasons my wife and I have not connected.
Easy to read and understand and even enjoyable reading. I plan on purchasing more copies for others. It's a book that I feel I will re-read several times to absorb every detail.

A Great Book for Children's Writers.......2007-02-09
Ms. Lee has put together a book that is full of information to help an aspiring author write, market, promote, and sell a children's book. It is an overviewof hot-to get your book published.
She takes you through the process step-by-step so you can make the choice which path to take to publication, from traditional to self-publishing. Ms. Lee includes chapters on how to format your manuscript, how to make a good first impression for publishers and how to grab and keep a readers interest.
The end of the book features two appendixes that focus on Writer's Organizations and Magazines as well as a list of books that will be helpful to writing and publishing your book.
A small book that has all you need to help you along the path to publishing your children's book. Ms. Lee has done a superb job.
Great for teaching other students and distilling the big picture.......2006-11-02
I teach writing and publishing workshops, and this book is a great low-cost addition to offer my students. The author has done a lot of work to supply vital information, including addresses needed in the writing and publishing industry, and to condense the enormous, almost overwhelming amounts of information out there down to the distilled basics. An historical famous author is noted to have said in a long-winded letter to a friend, "I would have written a shorter letter but I didn't have enough time." As a professional writer, I use this book to rescan and stay on top of the basics, where longer books (of which, of course, are also useful in different ways) would not suffice. From the writing "theme" to getting my work copyrighted, it can be easy to get lost in the depths of one or two basics and forget the others. It's a great jump-off point that keeps me organized and on track.
Not bad.......2005-11-05
This is a fair book, if your expectations are not too high. It's a lot like going to an evening talk at your library by a local children's author (which is quite possibly how this booklet started out). You learn some basics, lose some false concepts, get a view of the territory, benefit from tips drawn from the author's personal experience, receive some handouts from more authoritative sources (about a fifth of the book is reprinted from membership materials of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators), and get pointed to additional resources.
In other words, it's enough to get a feel for whether you want to explore the field more seriously, for which you'll need other, more complete guides.
If you're buying this book because "self-publishing" is in the title, though, you'd better know that only two pages are devoted to that, and the discussion is fairly general. But then, the low production values of this self-published booklet wouldn't lead you to expect more.
I was interested to read the book because it used to have a better sales rank, a higher customer rating, and many more reviews. Those other reviews (all anonymous, and all five-star, I believe) have now been removed. It would be interesting to learn why.
Anyway, Betsy has a pleasant and friendly enough voice to spend an hour with, if you want to get your feet wet in the big lake of children's writing.
A Concise Book For A Busy Lifestyle .......2005-08-24
I found Betsy Lee to be an enjoyable upbeat author. I was able to feel her love for writing in this concise little book titled,"A Basic Guide To Writing, Selling, and Promoting Children's Books:Plus Information about Self-publishing." It was very informative, positive and encouraging. Betsy's book was everything her title suggested. It was easy reading. I was able to read it along with by daily challenges. I later sat down with her book and my highlighter. I then proceeded to take many notes. Her book is now my bible and she's an author I will be looking forward to.
Insightful Ideas.......2004-08-05
I found this book to be well organized and filled with useable and practical ideas and information. The specific content was extremely helpful to me as an author. I also plan to use this with my middle school students to assist them with their own creative writing. The chapter entitled "How Do I Grab and Keep a Reader's Interest?" is an excellent starting point for all budding writers. Even though I have had two of my own books published, I learned a great deal of new information, especially about self-publishing, from reading this book. I think this book would be a wonderful read for anyone, young or old, who might be considering venturing into the world of writing. Nice Job!
Customer Reviews:
Really good introduction to the great pianists.......2007-10-12
This book basically traces pianists of note, starting from CPE Bach and continuing through to Horowitz and Rubinstein (late 80s). It is very informative and interesting, not at all dry.
It is not a biographical work. Only small excerpts of the lives of the pianists are presented and most of the book is dedicated to outlining the style of playing of each. Although, the usual amusing and amazing musical anicdotes are recounted to make for a good read. An important feature is that the information is all set into the context of the day and Schonberg goes to some length to lay out the broad features of each musical era and how this era affected the playing of the particular pianists, and how the pianist may have shaped the era.
It gives only a brief outline of most pianists, with a chapter devoted to the giants such as Mozart, Liszt and Hofmann. Some players, such as Bartok, are not given the attention they deserve I think, but this is not often. It is a informal and inspiring overview of the greatest pianists, and is well worth a read.
Great Pianists.......2007-03-27
An indispensable book for tracing the great teaching lineages from the past to the present.
A very useful guide........2007-03-20
If you want to know about the great pianists in history, this book will provide with a knowledgable and entertaining summary of the subject. Mr. Schonberg usually confronts several sources so one gets a very objective picture of many important and some not so important pianists.
One can see that Mr. Schonberg is not a pianist when he critics some people's views on such topics as technique, and one does not have to agree with his opinions about some pianists, but nevertheless this is a great book worth having as a reference.
Great but...........2005-03-26
where is Wilhelm Kempff? Don't you consider him a great pianist?
Other than that, a great and informative book that gives you insight into the ways of the giants of the 88
Incredibly written, entertaining, and informative.......2005-01-28
Mr. Schonberg knows how to put the reader at ease when writing about most any pianist. You feel comfortable with those great titans of pianism of years past, as if they were your own teachers. He paints vivid, honest pictures of each pianist, going into detail about how they played, their own peculiar strengths and weaknesses, about how they contributed to the overall history of piano-playing. Almost ALL the major and minor pianists of the past are described or at least mentioned. Also included are wonderful anecdotes giving insight into the personalities of the pianists involved. I had to laugh aloud when I read Chopin's disagreement over how rubato's should be played when arguing with fellow pianist Meyerbeer. The latter insisted that Chopin's playing of mazurkas sounds like 2/4 time, when Chopin was vehemently insisting that it was being played in 3/4 time (vehemence = screaming).
The only problems with the book is that Schonberg tends to stick to terms that become a little too commonplace throughout the book. He constantly refers to the "first modern pianist," "romantic," "ahead of his time," etc. He uses those terms so frequently that I forget which pianists were classicists, which were romantics, and which modernists. Also, the book is a little dated, the last publication being 1986.
However, if you're even MILDLY interested in the great pianists of the past please buy this interesting, thoroughly fact-packed book.

Mozart in Vienna, 1781-1791
ASIN: 0521583179 |
Book Description
Mozart was not only an extraordinary musical genius but a man who lived through the great change from the old society to the modern one in which we still live. He was one of the "new men" of the age--his music gives voice to anxieties and consolations that are still ours. This biography sets Mozart's life within the history of an age plunging into revolution and European war. Avoiding guesswork, it probes his crucial relationships with his father, his wife and his employer. It studies--in depth though in nontechnical language--characteristic examples of his music and asks what they can tell us about their author and ourselves.
Customer Reviews:
A brief and concise introduction to Mozart's life.......2002-08-08
Being a longtime fan of Mozart's work, naturally I wanted to learn more about the man himself. Too often I have found biographies to be dull, dry, and formulaic. This book provides a fresh and fascinating look into the life of the person many consider to be the world's greatest composer. The author writes with an engaging style, providing facts and some commentary. It truly is a great find, one that I particularly recommend to those whose only knowledge of Mozart comes from "Amadeus".
Tough read for a layman.......2002-01-23
The book claims to avoid guess work about the life of Mozart and it stands up to it. But you need to have basic knowledge of two things to appreciate this book - classical music and European history of the eighteenth century. Language is hard to grasp, and it seems to have been written for an English major. If I satified all these requirements I would have loved this book.
Book Description
Mozart's collaborations with the librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte led to the composition of three of the great masterpieces of opera. This book, designed to guide the reader to a deeper understanding and appreciation of these enigmatic works, charts the musical, cultural, and social context in
which they were written--the tastes and expectations of the contemporary opera audience, Mozart's intentions and aspirations in a period of rapid intellectual and political change, Da Ponte's views of opera, and the practical logistics of opera production at the time. Together, these strands
provide illuminating insights into Mozart's creative process and the functions of eighteenth-century opera.

A clear and concise treatment of a complex topic.......2003-03-25
Any complete study of the life and works of Mozart would take thousands of pages and hundreds of recordings just to crack the surface of this subject. Even merely the operas of Mozart cannot be adequately handled in a single volume (let alone the number of recordings involved). So on a much more modest scale, we have Andrew Steptoe's "The Mozart-Da Ponte Operas" from the Clarendon Paperbacks division of Oxford University Press (1988, reprinted 2001).
For those wondering about that title, Lorenzo Da Ponte was the fascinating character who wrote the libretti to three of Mozart's greatest operas. In fact, the subtitle of this book is "The Cultural and Musical Background to 'Le Nozze di Figaro,' 'Don Giovanni,' and 'Cosi fan tutte,' but the book does not even get to those works until page 98. Roughly the first third of the book gives us an excellently organized and clear background to the works and the chapter titles will tell you exactly what I mean: "The Social Context: Vienna and Her Ruler," "Musicians, Audience, and Opera in Mozart's Time," "Mozart and Vienna," and "Mozart and His Personal Circle." The next chapter deals with Da Ponte and the opera buffa tradition, and we finally have what we need to understand more fully what Mozart's audiences saw in these works that are all but lost to us.
The sixth chapter talks about "Cosi fan tutte" and how it reflected the moral climate of the day, while the next one discusses how Mozart treated the buffa plot from the musical standpoint. The remaining three chapters handle each of the Mozart-Da Ponte collaborations, and there are detailed synopses of the works in the appendix.
Although I have read most of this material before, I have never seen it put in so well-organized a fashion; and my next move is to reread it, putting margin notes in along the way. I plan to make much use of this book in my opera seminars, and the general reader (who will need some rudimentary knowledge of music to understand at least parts of this book) will find in it many a key to a deeper understanding of these three masterworks.
Book Description
Although there are many accounts of Mozart's life, and countless descriptions and analyses of his music, this is the first attempt to protray Mozart's creative life as a composer. Kuster selects forty works or groups of works covering virtually every important stage in Mozart's career, from the first keyboard works of the young Wunderkind to Mozart's final days and the composition of the Requiem. In between, each chapter deals with the developments and events in the lives of the Mozarts as associated with or highlighted by a particular work or constellation of works. The bulk of the book - the last 25 out of 40 chapters - is concerned with Mozart's life and compositions from his arrival in Vienna in 1781 to his death there some ten years later. Drawing on the tremendous advances in Mozart research over the last thirty years, and the publication of the New Mozart Edition, Kuster's book makes a major contribution to our understanding of the creative development of the composer who represents for most musicians and music lovers the highest pinnacle of musical achievement.
