Ho Hum boring........2001-11-12

Lots of useful info, I guess.
It is not what I expected.

Every county is listed. What industries, how many people, what kind of government. Ho Hum.

More like a Colorado Civics book than a book that would provide me any incentive to move there.

Where are the pictures? Colorado has such a variety of geographical landscapes, it would be nice to see an example of each region. Mountains? hills? flat? what?

What about school scores? I really would be intrested in that. How many kids go to college? What are their average SAT scores? That would significantly impact where I moved if I wanted to move.

Small business concerns are mentioned a bit, but a more thorough coverage would be handy.

If I am thinking about moving to Colorado, what do I need to know:
1. I am probably bringing my business there -OR- going to need a job. (I need employment data and small business data)
2.I am going to bring my family (real estate prices, common sizes of properties, school INFO!)

3. Weather (Covered!)
4. Geography (hmmmm not enough)
5. Entertainment (Is it an average of 50 miles to the nearest town with a theatre?)

Anyway. The author would do well to get a welcome packet from a Realtor. Those may be more handy.

Great resource for those new to Colorado.......2000-04-12

I've lived in colorado over 12-years, and this book would have been a great help when I first moved here. And now as a current resident, I see several parts of the book that can still be helpful to me. The 12-chapters include info. on moving tips, Colorado history, schools, taxes, motor vehicles, business start-up info. & high altitude living. This book would be a great resource for any one recently moved to Colorado, or planning to move there.

Ok basic, but not too helpful.......2006-02-26

This book gives a good basic overview of the health care finance. Its best feature is that it is applied to health care only, so you don't have to go through other business models. I cannot see using it in the future though - if you are planning to manage your office/work on a budget/evaluate your organization from a financial stand point, this is not the book you will need.

The Real U.S. Grant.......2005-05-25

The twenty-six (and counting!) volumes comprising all the known extant writings of Ulysses Grant are indeed a remarkable example of published primary source material. While every volume contains much material that is admittedly of trivial importance to even the most rabid Grant scholar, each book in this series also contains fascinating nuggets of information not found anywhere else. Anyone with even a casual interest in USG is sure to discover something worth reading in every volume. In gathering together not only all of Grant's known correspondence, but relevant peripheral documents, the editors of this series are doing a truly Herculean job and deserve great commendation.

I have only a few quibbles with the series. The first involves something over which the editors had no control. I refer to the fact that, in the first few volumes (particularly Volume One,) Grant's descendants insisted that certain passages in Grant's letters to his fiancee-turned-wife Julia Dent that had been crossed out (either by Julia or other family members) not be published. This idiotic decision is not only extremely frustrating for the reader, but, ironically, damaging to Grant himself. By all accounts, the deleted passages contain nothing that could be considered detrimental to Grant's good name, but by leaving them out, these descendants unwittingly gave the impression that there was something to hide. Hopefully, in an "Appendix" volume at the end of the series, the editors will be sporting enough to include whatever deleted passages can be transcribed, and the series will at last be considered complete.

My other complaints about this series are more minor. While each volume contains copious, and frequently illuminating, footnotes, the editors occasionally fail to provide enough context. That is to say, a brief, undetailed letter of Grant's will frequently be followed by several pages of footnotes providing other letters and documents on the same subject, without giving much information explaining what, exactly, it all meant. The reader who is not already fully informed on the subject being addressed is sometimes left feeling confused about what exactly is being discussed, and what its relevance may have been.

Another drawback is, simply, the price. While these books are certainly handsomely--and obviously expensively--printed and bound, those of us who study history as a hobby rather than as a profession could wish for editions that were more cheaply done, and thus more affordable. Unless you are fortunate enough to have access to a good academic library, these extremely expensive (even when you buy second-hand) volumes are simply out-of-reach for many people. That's a great pity, because in these books is an "insider's view" of Grant that does not fully come across in any regular biography.

A masterful achievement.......2000-07-03

Volume one was published in 1967 and there are now twenty-four volumes in the series. People who follow Grant's career are aware of the inestimable value of this project. Susan Miller's Unplanned Journey is a must read for anyone who finds themselves thrust into the unwelcome role of care giver for an Alzheimer's patient. But it is so much more than a poignant rant against an undesirable fate. In her mid 50's, Susan learns that her husband Don is a victim of early-onset Alzheimer's disease. The unspeakable sadness and anger experienced as a life-partner is gradually transformed into a dependent invalid. Most moving was the loss of the small everyday events that are shared by all couples, such as the kiss that had been the traditional end of every Vermont get-away weekend.

This book is about the terror of Alzheimer's disease, but it is also a poignant lesson about how we must strive to live our lives even in the best of times. Read Susan's moving verse and ponder her willingness to share so much of her inner self, let yourself cry as you feel the destructiveness of a terrible disease, then renew your resolve to live your life fully every day.

Why buy a book? A video is so much nicer........2006-01-14

I'm turned off by these dummies books. Is there ANYthing they don't have a book on. ANd I'm not a dummy. It's so much nicer to look at a DVD, especially when there's not only baby massage info, but information from a QUALIFIED therapist on baby development and natural exercises and interaction to do with your baby to make sure he is developing well. I recommend Aimee Ketchum's DVD (very inexpensive for the top quality and plethora of information in it) and WEE Exercises (also very well done).
