Comprehensive guide.......2007-09-10

This book is a good comprehensive guide to the island of Ibiza. It covers just about everything, backgound info, restaurants, beaches, clubs/bars, shopping. I'm not sure why the other reviewer called this a "clubbers book", I think they must have meant a different book. There is info on clubs, which is a large part of the island's draw for many people. However, it is by no means the majority of info in the book. It also covers the island of Formentara, which is a definite must-do day trip. I would have liked a better island map, although driving around is fairly easy as the roads are pretty well marked with directional signs. Definitely a good purchase, I took the book with me everyday.

This book is for Club Kids. If you are not a Club Kid, buy the Eyewitness book that also covers Minorca and Maellorca. That book is for a wider audience.

While I'm sure this volume will help all the clubbers out there find the "Iberian Beat" it was NOT specific about other things-- like beaches or restaurants! I read it cover-to-cover before arriving on Ibiza, yet it was awfully difficult to get the lay of the land.

If you care about DJs more than navigation or advice, try this book. Otherwise, pick another one!

A superb piece of the large civil war picture.......2000-08-29

As an avid Civil War reader, I was very impressed with this book. While there are an endless number of books that specifically deal with the civil war or reconstruction, Jones eloquently tied the two together by focusing on 14 diverse leaders. It was particularly interesting to see how some of the central characters of the war turned out when the fighting was over; some for the best & others for the worst. It is a very readable and fascinating book!

Great for Civil War Buffs, but overall a Disappointment.......2000-08-06

This book has a very interesting premise, how fourteen men helped to shape the Post Civil War era.But ultimately the author fails to establish just how men like George McClellan, John Bell Hood and JohnS. Mosby helped to shape the postwar era.As for those of His subjects who genuinely did help to shape the era Dr. Jones has nothing new to say and what He does say is pedestrian and superficial.The role of Robert E. Lee is overrated and that of U.S. Grant is underrrated.At the conclusion of His chapter on Andrew Johnson Dr. Jones concludes''Johnson may have been a racist.'' This is rather like saying that Calvin Coolidge may have been a Republican.The book is supposed to be about those who shaped the postwar era but their are no chapters on Frederick Douglass, Thaddeus Stevens or Charles Sumner.The book just does''nt live up to the premise of it's title. If Paul Harvey had written this book it would be titled something like''The Civil War;The Rest of the Story''Also if Paul Harvey were the author it would have been much better written.If you are a Civil War Buff you will find this book pasably interesting but certainly not to be ranked along side the works of Shelby Foote, Bruce Catton and James McPherson.If you are not a Civil War Buff this book is a waste of time and money.

Interesting theme, but..........2000-05-28

As a Civil War buff, I thought the concept of focusing on the lives of fourteen major figures in the war would be original and a unique addition to my library. Unfortunately, the cursory writing and loose editing reminded me of the Classic Comics of my youth...flashy but not to be kept on the bookshelf. The lives of the "fourteen" and their impact on the post-Civil War era are given only a once-over-lightly, and little is included in the book that has not been reported by other authors in more substantive and definitive texts.

Why anyone would spend money on Levine's book just to find out what happened to some peripheral character with whom she once worked is beyond me.

"I've been lucky, very lucky. In fact, we should all be so lucky," says Kathy Levine. Actually, Kathy Levine sets clear goals and takes action to achieve them. When she makes mistakes, many of which she details in this book, she refuses to be crushed, and gets up and tries again. This was a pleasant read, chatty and truthful, like a letter from a relative you haven't seen in a long while.

Just a Diary..... Ho Hum........1998-11-24

This book was very different from the first book. Kathy basically just took her past 2 years experiences since book #1 and put them between 2 hard covers. I could have done that. And what was with that diet thing anyway. My goodness, she devoted almost an entire chapter to a weight watcher list of have and have nots...but I think it was from the Zone. We knew she was on that Phen-Fen for quite sometime. That was a very strange thing to list in a book. I was very disappointed when I finished it and did NOT like the last chapter. Yes, she is very fortunate to have a great job and meet lots of celebs, but she is a LOSER when it comes to the love dept. She tends to put men down if they are not showering her with baubles and gems. It was a quick book with larger print and less pages than the first one. When I finished it, I felt like I had just wasted my time. I did however, sympathize with her over the loss of her ex-husband. That chapter held my attention, but the rest of the book just sounded like an old broad complaining about men. Not my style. I think she is hanging around Joan Rivers too much.

I bought this book to see what happened to Jeffery Hewson. She mentioned him but I still don't know what happened to him. I really don't like Kathy Levine much and the book just confirmed my original opinon. She loves herself!

Kathy Levine, the Pushy Diva of QVC, reveals how self-absorbed she really is. This book is absolutely nauseating...makes you want to ask Kathy, "Why are you so pushy!" Read it with the knowledge that Kathy is a materialistic, obnoxious woman, with almost no concern for anybody else.

Leslie Stuart (1864-1928) was a British songwriter best remembered as the composer of the hit show, Florodora. He began writing popular songs as a teenager, first for blackface and vaudeville performers, and eventually for more "legitimate" shows and revues. Florodora (1899), written in collaboration with London's most fashionable librettist, Owen Hall, was a musical-comedy sensation. Its combination of the traditional slow love ballads and waltzes with more rhythmic and long-lined numbers made it a worldwide success. He continued to compose through the first decade of the 20th century, laying the groundwork for the coming innovations in British and American musical theater.

An Engaging Biography of an Colorfull Personality.......2003-02-01

This book presents a cradle-to-grave biography of this most interesting musical composer's life. Leslie Stuart output falls into a category of composers of an almost lost generation of musical theatre - Edwardian Musical Comedy. Up until Andrew Lamb's opus, the biographical information on Stuart and his times was scant and highly innacurate. Thanks to Lamb, we have an interesting view of Stuart as a talented musician, impresario and composer - rather than the short shriff given him which usually covers only bankruptcy and Florodora.

Stuart's career spanned 40 years during which he met, encouraged, and even promoted some of the most famous artists of his time. He had a remarkable sense of good music and musical talent. Starting in Manchester and moving to London, he was generous, flambouant and had an almost unerring eye to presenting entertaining the public.

His flambouance ran him eventually into trouble, but not before he campaigned for musical copyrights, launched many musical careers and wrote some of the most memorable songs of the period.
His status and reknown in his day was something like that of Andrew Lloyd Weber today - yet remarkably his achievments, until this book, were largely, as the title implies, forgotten.

Andrew Lamb presents his biographical information with incredible detail including letters, documents, news articles and cast lists from all over the world. My favorite item is a photo showing Stuart in New York at a concert with all of the other once-and-future great compoers of the day including Herbert, Kern, Sousa, Friml, etc.
