This was written by three of my former professors at the School of Taxation at the University of Florida. The text mirrors why I enjoyed their classes and took 38 hours under them. It puts a rather complicated IRS Code interpretation into easy to understand practical applications.
Difficult To Understand The Main Issues.......2005-06-19
This text includes cases that involve a lot of the accounting numbers without a lot of explanation about the tax principles that were used in deriving the numbers. The best supplement I have found is the Eighth Edition Federal Income Taxation supplement by Stephen Lind and David Hudson put out by the Black Letter Series by the West Group recommended by my professor which was written by one of the authors of the casebook.

Decent Primer for Beginners.......2004-01-12
This is an excellent introduction to analyzing financial statements, at least for those who have never done so before or who have no background in business. It even is of benefit to seasoned financial people who don't necessarily spend a lot of time reviewing financial statements.
It covers quite a bit of information in a relatively small number of pages: taxation, inventories, cash flow, depreciation, capital investments, and even intangibles like Research and Development and market position. It is well organized and presented in plain Englsih, much to its credit.
However, keep in mind that this is more of a starting point. If you plan on spending a lot of time doing indepth analysis of financial statements, I would recommend starting with this book to provide the basics and then moving on to a more technical and detailed volume. You might want to pick an accounting and/or finance course along the way, too.

I bought this guide to financial statements, and I was impressed on how much was covered in such a short book. However, much is vague and misleading to the reader. I would recommend questioning why all the reviewers that rank this book so well are from PA. Those reviews are undoubtably from people representing the authors. You may want to look elsewhere for more thourough input on financial analysis.

This is a good book if you do not know anything about financial statements analysis. However, since it belongs to the "Pocket MBA series", one would expect more advanced content.

a visual treat.......2007-02-01
I have to admit a weakness for coffee-table books about palaces, stately homes etc, but this sumptuous, oversize volume is among the better ones of the genre. It is a detailed history of Hampton Court Palace - its origins, construction, additions, renovations, decoration and gardens, but also it touches on the lives and motivations of its people - builders and architects, kings and princes, bureaucrats and functionaries, tenants and visitors.
Richly illustrated with floor plans, drawings, paintings, prints, portraits, and photographs, this account of Hampton Court brings the story of the famous palace up to the 21st century.
When I last visited Hampton Court a quarter century ago, both house and gardens were looking decidedly shabby and, apparently, it got much worse before it got better. Tourists were passing it up in droves. Scandalous mismanagement, including a 3 million pound contractor fraud, dismantled fire detectors and gateways too narrow for fire engines, led up to a disastrous fire in 1986 and resulted in 2 deaths.
Although this is a serious work, one (unintentionally?) hilarious episode described in the book is the comic-opera visit to view the fire damage by the then Secretary of State for the Environment (& the man ultimately responsible for Hampton Court), Nicolas Ridley. Ridley, a chain smoker, his wife who was claustrophobic and ten other dignitaries were descending in the lift when it jammed between floors; the emergency manual door-opening device failed to function; the elevator maintenance man could not be located. Two hours later the Fire Brigade forced the doors open with a hydraulic jack. Heads rolled afterward - if only metaphorically.
New schemes have since been put in place for restoration and refurbishment, for improved property management and to enhance the attractions of the historic old palace for new generations of visitors.
TUDOR MEETS STUART.......2006-03-19
Britain does not possess a Versailles or a Caserta, but Hampton Court is about the close as it gets. Hampton Court is really two palaces, one built for Cardinal Wolsey, stolen by the gluttonous Henry VIII and finished in magnificent style by Sir Christopher Wren. Its history is really more interesting than the building itself. Hampton Court, though spectacular in many ways, will make nobody forget Fountainbleu or the Lourve. This book has wonderful images and the text is sholarly and enlightening. I highly recommend this book to anyone with any interest in British history, or storied structures.

A comprehensive listing of the Irish "big houses".......2007-07-28
As he explains in the preface to this book, Mark Bence-Jones' goal is to provide a description of "every Irish country house . . . whether still standing, or ruinous, or long demolished." This he does, with brief summaries of their location (by city and county), origins, architecture, and ownership. The entries themselves make for interesting reading, as Bence-Jones inserts micro-histories about the houses and the families who owned them. The listings themselves are alphabetically arranged by the name of the house, with an index that allows the reader to look up information by architect (though not architectural style), family, and historical personages associated with the location. Supplemented with an introduction providing a brief overview of the history of Irish country houses and a glossary of architectural terms, the book is an extremely useful guide to its subject, one that nobody interested in the topic should do without.

I went home and devoured the book - went to a concert at my church in between chapters and had the taste of wedding cake in my mouth. The personal nature of the "journal entry" chapters give an insight into love, exclusion, confusion, certainty, planning, joy. I found for me it highlights what being single has meant in the midst of a coupled/married Other.
Creates a beautiful landscape.......2006-03-16
This is a lovely book. The chapters are like soft bits of snow, falling gently, one at a time, and creating a beautiful landscape when they all come together. I often found myself smiling reading these touching and humorous stories of love and home. I look forward to reading more from this talented writer.
An opinionated and playful voice.......2005-12-17
I enjoyed this book more and more as it progressed, and I think this is because I enjoyed the development of the author's voice, the sense of this honest, liberal, somewhat opinionated and playful individual talking. The book is really a personal essay, a journal-like memoir, as much (or more) about the author as about a gay marriage. As a straight person, I found it eye-opening to hear about the many situations in which Ms. Wescott and her partner, Kathleen, felt they had to hide their relationship. "Gayness" is a theme of the book in that sense - how it has felt in the life of the author. But I think one reason the story of this marriage comes across as complex and real is that gayness is one element of the story, but it isn't the story.
Funny and touching.......2005-12-06
A delightful episodic journey through the life of a woman who married her female partner shortly after gay marriage became legal in MA. Details of the wedding planning are funny and touching, but the book offers more: quirky insightful observations, revelations about intimacy and relationships, and musings about finding one's place in the world. This is a wonderful book for everyone -- male and female, gay and straight.
As you read, you recognize yourself. .......2005-11-08
I couldn't stop reading--engaging, direct and heartfelt. If you have ever planned a wedding (or bar mitzvah...or commitment ceremony...or any public ritual), this is the book for you. We can all relate to the struggles and triumphs that come as you try to make a public celebration into a day that reflects who you are. The author draws you in with spirit, humour and wit.

Great, but...........2006-06-06
As a JD fan I think that this book is great! But there are some flaws with it.
One. The author Robert Stockdale, puts too much emphasis on the early, pre-Jimmy Dorsey band, recordings. Which I guess is Stockdale's specialty.
Two. When it comes to the discography of the Dorsey band, circa 1936-1949, the author borrows heavily from the earlier Joyce Record Club Discographies. They date from 1980 and a revised edition of 1988. This is the case even with carrying over the errors from the Joyce books.
One error is the incomplete listing of the second battle of the Dorsey Brothers orchestras on 9/25/46. Joyce totally ignored this broadcast recording, even though Joyce records had issued an LP of part of the broadcast on Joyce 1101. While Stockdale leaves out the JD tune, "South America, Take it away" he does list the other JD tunes in this broadcast. However he transposes three tunes from this broadcast("South America,Take it Away","The Language of Love" and "Perdido") to another broadcast from 8/21/46. Coincidence? That they are the same tunes? Could be but one of the LP's listed as an issued recording is the Joyce 1101 LP.
An even more visible error is the total mistake in the Joyce Discography of 1988 of attributing six of the tunes in Golden Era LP 15016,dated in Joyce to a period from April to July 1946,to JD. Stockdale copies the six tunes into his discography and dates them between June and July of 1946. The tunes are "MO-Mo","Blues for Me", "So, What's New?","Sweet thing", "Lullaby in Rhythm" and "Flying Home". Six tunes that JD performed only on that date! Except for "Flying Home", which he performed one other time with TD's band in the 1950's. However, I have Golden Era LP 15016 and the Artist performing these tunes is identified as Georgie Auld and his band. An audio check of the recording shows this to be the case. JD had nothing at all to do with these performances!
I mention the above two cases to show that Stockdale is rather perfunctory when dealing with the JD Orchestra of 1936-49 or so.
I tend to prefer the JD band of this later period. But, by and large, Stockdale's book is still the best reference for this period.
However, on the early days of JD and TD and all the bands they were part of and all the myriad records that they made, THIS BOOK IS PRICELESS!! Nearly half the length of the book is devoted to those wild days of the twenties and early thirties. Bob Stockdale is meticulous in listing all their records.
Another, minor flaw, is that there could have been many more pictures. Particularly of the JD big band in the Golden Age of American pop music and that thing called jazz circa 1936-1947.

Delightful and Informative "a must for the Swing Era lover".......1999-06-08
This book, written mostly by Herb Sanford, was extremely informative and easily filled in some blanks in my knowledge of the Brothers Dorsey. Their trials and tribulations as Stars of Radio and Movies, and most famously, the Big Band Stage, also touched on their roles as Family Men, and personalities which lead them down the paths they took. Mac and Lad, pet-names for each other, were as close as two brothers could be, even though they always had distant opinions on the same subject. As a relative to these two cornerstones of Big Band and Jazz, I am especially glad to feel I was able to participate in the enjoyment of their lives and music by reading this book. Even though they have passed on, I know their souls are within these pages.

Survival in Siberia - not only physically.......2000-05-17
The Rachlin family were jewish and in the between the two worst ditators ever seen. 5 miles from their home in Lithuania, Nazi Germany and 100 miles to the East, Stalin Russia. Two days before the German attack on the Soviet Union in 1941, the Rachlins were deported to Siberia. The irony is that it saved their lives. None of their family in Lithuania survived the Holocaust. The story is not about the camps. This family was "only" deported. But for any family that would be a tremendous tragegy. The fact that it was worse for many other families could hardly be expected to give any comfort. They survived 16 years in deportation in different places in Eastern Siberia. But the true victory over the cruel system was, that they got out and not only that: Through all these years and the years after their escape, they continued being loving, caring and decent people. This in spite of the undecent state that almost crushed them. It is also the story of the so called "capitalist decadent West". Rachel was Danish and her Danish family tried to help her and her family out. The Danish Prime Minister used much time trying to get them out and in 1956 he succeeded. Kruschov became very angry: "Now we should negotiate about oil tankers, and all you can talk about is one single family! ". Then he said that he would look into it, and the family was freed. So this is also a story about a small country caring for even one single family on the very highest level. And one final thing: The family was very fond of Russia and her people. However, to the Stalinist and communist system they did not have much good to say. This is a story that could have been your own story if you were born in a wrong place like Yugoslavia, China and the like. This is why you should read it!
