A pocket guide that won't make you look like a tourist!.......1998-07-15
The catch is, it's more of a handy map than a traveller's guidebook. I wish the maps had scales (guides to indicate, for example, that 1 inch equals a mile). Other than that, I'm happy with the book.

Conceptual Communal Home Design: The Functional and Efficient, Land-Conscious Way
Christopher John Eldridge Manufacturer: Trafford Publishing ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 141201820X |
Product Description
Although we'd all like to forget the absolute failure of 1970's-era communes, such a form of living can actually offer a far higher quality of living than middle-class Americans will ever be able to achieve on their own. This isn't even that hard to demonstrate. Ten ordinary/humdrum living rooms, for example, just don't compare to the 32-seat movie theater, racquetball court, library, and game room/sports bar that can be built in their place! Being able to work from home in sub-industrial-scale shops and in professional offices without the need to travel is also held in sharp contrast to the deficiencies of single-family living. Indeed, high performance features, which most people would find unheard of, carry through to all parts of these homes. This book contains the conceptual floor plans for ten communal homes. There are thought provoking four- and seven-bedroom extended-family dwellings that far outperform contemporary homes. There are 11- and 16-bedroom units with extensive shop and office facilities. There are larger 42- and 81-bedroom units with more activity areas than most small towns have. There is even a theoretical 21-level mid-rise facility offered that would fill the core of a professional sports stadium. All of these designs have emergency-enhanced features (such as extensive visitor accommodations) to help families better cope with region-wide disasters.
All floor plans are presented in an easy-to-understand, clutter-free format. This allows readers to focus on the design's true performance, not its aesthetical appearance. Readers are provided with a wealth of supporting information. Chapter by chapter details describe just how functional, efficient, and even how downright enjoyable such arrangements can be when homes are specifically designed for such intensified living conditions.
No longer do we have to embrace a lottery mentality of foolishly thinking that we can simply win our way to a better life. When we go about life so decisively as this, we can systematically achieve a far higher standard of living as well as lowering land consumption 60% to 95%! With lower level parking garages, flat/usable rooftops, and hydroponic greenhouse gardens, no home could ever get anymore environmentally friendly than these!
This is a full-size 8.25" X 10.75" book containing seven chapters, seven appendix sections, and 50 B&W line drawings and photos.

The New Cancer Survivors: Living with Grace, Fighting with Spirit
Natalie Davis Spingarn Manufacturer: JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY PRESS ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0801862671 |
Book Description
Surviving with cancer, Natalie Davis Spingarn tells us, means seeing yourself differently and recognizing that others may see you differently. It means worrying more about work and money. It means facing your mortality. It means dealing with the medical system by learning how to be a good consumer of health services -- including making choices among different doctors, medical centers, and insurance plans.
Diagnosed with cancer in the early 1970s and now an independent writer specializing in health and social policy issues (particularly for the Washington Post), Spingarn uses her experiences as the basis for describing and critiquing what experts say about the emotional, physical, family, and practical issues involved. She helps others deal with such issues by relating her own experiences, good and bad, and offering practical encouragement to readers in similar situations.
Lively and empathetic, The New Cancer Survivors will appeal to persons with cancer who, thanks to modern medical science, are "hanging in there with illnesses that once evoked only submission or surrender" -- as well as to their families, friends, and caregivers. Throughout, the author shines a bright light on the cancer experience, providing good reason to be hopeful as well as insight into how to respond when things do not go so well. Because she has suffered recurrences, she can compare treatment in the seventies (week-long hospital stays, for example, and extensive surgery and chemotherapy) with treatment in the nineties ("drive-through" precision surgery, genetic testing, the incorporation of some "complementary" therapies into mainstream medicine) and weigh the differences. The New Cancer Survivors digs deep for the truth and serves it up with humor and attitude -- offering a wealth of information, comfort, and inspiration.
Praise for Natalie Davis Spingarn:
"Spingarn... gives encouragement to others in similar situations, drawing on and citing the wealth of literature dealing with various aspects of cancer to supplement her own observations." -- Library Journal
"Deals with many topics traditionally considered taboo in talking to those with life-threatening illness, including problems with money, work, friends, relatives, and erratic health insurance coverage." -- Boston Globe
"The most important ingredient of the Spingarn recipe for 'hanging in': A generous dash of hope seasoned with the self-discipline of making choices and a willingness to take risks." -- New York Daily News
"A Baedeker for cancer patients and their families." -- Washington Post
"Natalie Davis Spingarn's great talent is finding the most common denominator that is not the lowest common denominator. She offers herself to her fellow cancer survivors as a favorite aunt who will 'talk about it' when no one else will. Every cancer survivor, no matter how well informed already, will find information and affirmation in this book. Medical professionals who want to learn what their work looks like from the patient's perspective will find a mirror view in which they can improve their practices." -- Arthur W. Frank, University of Calgary, author of At the Will of Body: Reflections on Illness and The Wounded Storyteller: Body, Illness, and Ethics

A Great Help on the Journey.......2000-02-24
Recommended for cancer patients -- and those that love them........2000-02-04
A gift to the curious cancer survivor........2000-01-30
This book reads like a mixture of biography -- the author's personal story is compelling -- history, philsophy, and social commentary on the state of cancer care in the U.S. It would probably not be the first book that I would pick up if I was just diagnosed with cancer as this book deals with complex issues. I would need something more practical and simple and easy at that stage of the game. But for the millions of survivors who are mentally and emotionally ready to explore cancer on a deeper level and try to make sense out of it all, this just may be one of the best books available. It describes how we got to where we are today and where we hopefully are going. It is honest in descibing both the joys and successes of cancer care along with the tragedies and challenges. It is a pragmatic book about cancer and hope.

A direct and honest account of one man's life.......1998-07-02
It's interesting because it's written almost disingenously, from a very European Jewish point of view, that one must take advantage of all possible ways to make money. The thinking is clear; this is often edited nowadays to reduce antiSemitism. I found the book at a San Francisco public library book sale for $1.00 and have passed it around to friends for its sheer honesty.
Anyone interested in health might also enjoy it.
