ASIN: 2068554011 |
Book Description
Who hasn't dreamed of exploring Petra, the hidden mythical city of the Nabateans, carved out of shimmering rose-red sandstone; of strolling around the colonnades of ruined Palmyra by moonlight; or of meditating on the sumptuous carpets in the Omayyad mosque? This book guides you through the spice-scented maze of souks in Aleppo and Damascus, recommends good hotels, restaurants where you can sample the best mezze, hammams where you can relax, and explains the subtleties of Syrian and Jordanian hospitality. Suggested itineraries and maps will take you from the thousand-year-old sites of Ougarit, Ebla and Mari to the Roman cities of Jarash and Apamea, from the Byzantine Dead Cities to the crusaders' fortresses of Kerak, Margat, Saladin's citadel and the Krak de Chevaliers...

"Which Way?" The Driver Said and Other Tales.......2000-12-29
Having needed to help my guide/driver navigate the backroads of Syria a month ago, I can say with total confidence that Neos Guide is an "Absolute Must Have" book along with the Lonely Planet "Syria". The city maps especially are extemely clear and necessary, the cities and historic sites are well described, and the recomended selection of sites to see, is superior to suggestions offered by local guides. Trust your book, your guide's actual travel experiences may be limited.
Acceptable hotel accomdations are a bit problematic in Syria and the Neos Guide was indespensable; hotel descriptions were accurate, the location maps clear, and the prices as quoted. In the final analysis I was always best off selecting a hotel recommended by Neos.
The section dealing with culture and customs was helpful in avoiding social snafus. The historical section was brief and concise.
This is simpy a excellent and necessary guidebook for the independent traveler to Syria and Jordan, for business or pleasure.

Confusing, Tricky and Frustrating.......2005-07-15
This is by far one of the worst textbooks I have ever used in my life. It made my life EXTREMELY difficult, the problems are tricky and at times they will be give you information that will completely throw you off until you are too frustrated to try to figure it out. The text is of little help when it comes to answering some of the questions. I definately would not recommend it to anyone who has not had experience with accounting.
Extremely Frusterating.......2004-01-30
I bought this book to better understand Financial Accounting. This book is loaded with errors. The end of chapter problems do not balance correctly. I had a CPA do the same problems, and he came up with the exact same totals as me!
Another annoying thing to point out is that the book only gives answers to a small select random of problems. Of course they are the easier ones. I would love to get answers/explanations on the incorrect ones. I have written emails, and none have been responded. I am not suprised...

Good Intro to Financial Accounting but many Drawbacks.......2004-12-10
The book "Financial Accounting" gives a very good overview of the technique of financial accounting, but falls short on the analysis port.
The good: The book starts with the basics and builds up on the covered material. I did like the writing style and the book is easy to read. The basic concepts (are there really concepts in financial accounting?) are carefully introduced step by step, illustrated with simple examples and
backed up by extracts from real financial reports. Every chapter contains one or more mid-chapter and end-of-chapter summary problems (with answers) and an extensive set of exercises for each chapter.
The bad: There are several aspects of this text I didn't like too much. Although the book covers the basics, it is often kept too simple. While this is ideal for the first learning experience, a lot of real life problems are left uncovered. You will get an overview, but your far from being an accountant after the lecture of this book.
The financial statements presented in the book do not follow a common pattern. There are a gazillion different cash flow examples and none look alike (ok, maybe to an accountant, but certainly not to me). Following the style and purpose of the book, more care should have been taken in structuring the statements.
While I liked the extensive set of exercises, I was annoyed that no solutions are provided. A solution manual is available to teachers, but this contains a lot of errors.
The section on analyzing financial reports is way too brief and should probably omitted completely. There are better texts covering this issue in depth.
And the ugly: This thing is way too expensive. The binding is rather cheap, my copy started to fall apart after 2 month (or did I just have to learn harder than the average Joe?).
The CD provided with the book is neither bad nor good. Just useless. Excel files with the data for all exercises would have been far better than the provided material.
Overall, the book gives a good introduction to financial accounting, but there are too many issues to make it a really recommendable choice.
Worst textbook I've used.........2004-03-30
This textbook is really bad. Not very informative at all comparing it to other financial accounting books. It gives very broad descriptions and definitions that make it feel more like a grammar school book than a college-level. I was very unhappy that my professor assigned my class with this book. If you do not need to buy it, please don't, it's horrible.

A healthy cookbook for real people........1998-11-17
We love this book. We bought it on a whim when it was new and have used it hard ever since. We were looking for an every-day cookbook that was healthier than the ones our Mom's used. We liked this one because the recipes use primarily ingredients we already have on hand. Preparation times vary from quick to long, allowing for recipes to use in a variety of situations. This cookbook contains chapters on appetizers, main dishes with meat, main dishes without meat, and desserts as well as other sections. We appreciate the diversity, nutritional information, clear instructions, and lists of ingredients, most of which are readily available in our grocery store. We have not tried every recipe in the book, but we have liked and repeated almost all the recipes we have tried.

Erik Satie: an obsession for creativity.......2007-01-19
The Orledge's Satie Remembered, translated into English by Roger Nichols, is a nice suprise for those who wants to build up a picture of who was and what was importance of Satie to modern music. Through a collection of writings of his acquaintances, artists friends (e.g. Ravel, Debussy, Stravisnky), and even people who did not go along with him, we learn a lot of his genius and a sort of obsessive thrive to innovate, to create and introduce new concepts based on his particular views and the way he saw not only music, but art in its several forms and his excentricity in a Paris from the beginning of XIX Century. It is amazing that you can find 1,250,000 citations about E. Satie at Google, but for sure it is much more pleasant and worthwhile to know who was Satie through Orledge's book. I recommend this book and congratulate the author for his fine job.
Satie by his peers.......2000-04-01
Robert Orledge is an expert on Satie. From his hand is the excellent book 'Satie the Composer'. In this book Orledge assembled citations from peer artists about the great French artist and composer Erik Satie. It's great to read these first hand passages and anecdotes. A must for every Satie fan and lover of French culture. Erik Fokke, Amsterdam - The Netherlands

A magician plunges into the Mississippi River with wrists manacled together.
A doctor comforts children before injecting them with an experimental vaccine he hopes will save the lives of millions.
A law student, turned away from the Harvard library where women are not allowed, begins a career fighting for equal rights that leads to her appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court.
These defining moments, described in vivid detail, introduce young readers to Harry Houdini, Dr. Jonas Salk, and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, as well as ten other distinguished Jewish Americans. By focusing on one key scene from each of thirteen people's lives, ac-claimed author Doreen Rappaport and noted artists Cornelius Van Wright and Ying-Hwa Hu give young readers an exciting introduction to the great history of Jewish Americans.

Defining moments in the lives of thirteen Jewish Americans.......2005-08-12
When young readers look at the faces on the cover of "In the Promised Land: Lives of Jewish Americans," they should immediately recognize Steven Spielberg. Depending on how much they now about history and the news they might recognize Harry Houdini and Ruth Bader Ginsberg from the faces on the cover, and maybe Judith Resnick. But they will not recognize most of the faces any more than they will recognize most of the names of the thirteen distinguished Jewish Americans for whom author Doreen Rappaport and illustrators Cornelius Van Wright and Ying-Hwa Hu have picked for this book. For example, I recognize the name Jonas Salk, but I do not know his face the way I do Albert Einstein.
In his Author's Note at the beginning of the book Rappaport says that the first Jews who fled persecution and violence to come to the New World arrived on the "Sainte Catherine" when the ship landed in the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam in 1654. After the American Revolution there were about two thousand Jews living in the United States, while in the 1830s and 1840s more than 200,000 German Jews arrived. From the 1880s to the 1920s more than 2 million Jews from Eastern Europe fled anti-Semitic violence to make a new life in America. The common denominator of their experience was that each wave of Jewish immigrants found themselves barred from certain professions, schools, neighborhoods, and organizations. Sometimes there were actually laws barring them and sometimes they were unwritten codes reflecting such prejudices. But the stories told here are about those who broke through these barriers to become successful (Rappaport points out the Jewish women face the double exclusion of religion and sex).
Each two-page spread tells of one key scene in the lives of each of these thirteen people, whether it is Harry Houdini (Ehrich Weiss) plunging into the Mississippi River with his wrists manacles together or young law student Ruth Bader being barred from entering the Lamont Library on Harvard's campus. The other people young readers will meet in this book are Asser Levy, who wrote petitions against unfair treatment by the governor of New Amsterdam, Ernestine Rose, who demanded women should have the same rights as men and be given custody of their children if divorced, Solomon Nunes Carvalho, who took daguerreotype-types of the terrain when John Fremont was mapping out a railroad route through the Rocky Mountains, Jacob W. Davis, who created what we now know as Levis Strauss jeans, Lillian Wald, who started the Visiting Nurse Service in New York City's Lower East Side, Pauline Newman, who led a strike of garment workers in New York City when she was only 19, Lillian Copeland, a Olympic champion discus thrower, and Ira Hirschmann, who pleased for Turkey to accept "illegal" refugees fleeing Nazi Germany.
At the end of this 2005 publication young readers will find themselves on more familiar ground, with Salk inventing the polio vaccine, Ginsberg ending up on the U.S. Supreme Court, Resnick dying on the space shuttle "Challenger," and Spielberg creating E.T. In the back of "In the Promised Land," Rappaport explains about the research done to pick each pivotal event in the lives being told, while Van Wright and Hu talk about the difficulties of painting people for whom there are no known paintings or photographs. Selected Research Sources are provided where young students can find out more about these people in books or On-line. This particular trio has collaborated on a similar volume, "We are the Many: A Picture Book of American Indians," which teacher and students should find of interest as well.
A picturebook for grades 2-4.......2005-06-14
Here's a new approach to biography: a retelling of pivotal moments in the lives of notable Jewish Americans in In The Promised Land: Lives Of Jewish Americans, a picturebook for grades 2-4, embellished with drawings by Cornelius Van Wright and Ying-Hwa Hu. 'Notable' doesn't necessarily translate to 'famous', as these stories show: among the featured are frontier tailor Jacob W. Davis, who invented the durable overall design Levi Strauss came to sell, Harry Houdini, master of magic, and Asser Levy, who fought against unfair treatment of Jewish citizens in Amsterdam - in 1654. Thirteen extraordinary Jewish people are treated to one-page detailed biographical sketches.
