Book Description
I Am Happier to Know You is the story of the people, culture, sights and fragrances of Egypt and the Middle East viewed through the eyes and heart of a single, midlife woman. Concurrently, it's a memoir of the joys and challenges author Jeanne M. Eck embraced when, on wings of faith, she left her Western culture behind and moved to Egypt.
Customer Reviews:
i am happier to know u.......2007-05-14
loved it, loved it, loved it...my kind of book....easy to read, extremely interesting & informative...if you have a desire to learn more about the muslim culture & to have a greater understanding of the people of egypt this is the book you must read. the author with her wit & charm has done a wonderful job at making you feel you are there with her sharing her experiences. will definately order more copies to give to my friends (there not getting my copy)who i know will think twice before critising the muslim culture & hopefully have a harder look at our own culture.
I am Happier to Know You.......2006-03-26
Written with humor, honesty and genuine caring, I am Happier to Know You takes the reader into a rich and varied culture with social and political perspectives so necessary to our understanding of today's world. This story of a lone, American woman as she finds personal strength experiencing a totally new life is insightful and compassionate. I felt as if I were in Egypt. Her sense of humor took her through many trying circumstances, but brought with it acceptance and understanding of a country and a people she truly loves. I am Happier to Know You provides both learning and understanding of Middle Eastern customs through non-judgmental eyes and an inspiring, courageous story of personal growth.
Easy to read.......2006-02-25
This book is written in a easy way to read, entertaining and informative in some parts but the writer was misinformed in some other parts. I am an Egyptian and while was reading some parts I was feeling like she was talking about another country than the one I know. Either she was misinformed as I said or didn't understand some aspects of the culture. Overall, it is a good book. At least she took the time to know another culture. I salute her.
Love is the Answer.......2005-11-15
"I Am Happier to Know You" written by Jeanne M. Eck is a memoir of a journey within and without. Written with honesty and clarity Jeanne's voice offers the reader to experience Egypt through her eyes and heart. Her growth and wisdom expands in this faraway land and this growth and wisdom transcends the pages for all to grasp. Ultimately, her message is really very simple and beautiful, " Love is the answer, it is the answer to everything.
I Am Even Happier To Know Jean Eck & Her Wonderful Book!.......2005-11-13
What can I say? Jean is so honest when she writes and I truly love this quality in her latest book "I Am Happier To Know You." As an expat living in Egypt, myself (for 7 years), I truly could not of said it any better than Jean. She captures every little detail of life in Egypt. Her indepth explanation of the sounds, smells, and tastes of Egyptian life is brought to life in-front of your eyes, as you read her book. At times, I felt I wasn't reading - I was just mearly watching her life unfold hear step by step and inch by inch. She has truly done the unknown and remarkable endeavours to create this book. Going were most people don't dare go; she went full force into a life of the unknown and came out to tell about it in "I Am Happier To Know You." I highly recommend this book to anyone that simply once to be able to let go of all you ever known but, just can't! Jean Eck makes it all come true for you in "I Am Happier To Know You."

Customer Reviews:
Essential for any woman traveling to Egypt.......2001-08-08
As an American woman who had already been to Egypt and experienced many different things with regard to cultural differences, I decided to purchase this book before returning again . It was a relief to get some insight on certain situations to avoid (as a woman) and how to enjoy this wonderful country while maintaining a deep respect for it's people's beliefs and customs.
A Good Read.......2001-03-20
There are two types of travel books: Those we skim through and those we read. As a book to skim, it's ok. It does not have much to reference quickly, if at all. However, as a book to read and to contemplate, it is very good. If you buy this book, take the time to read it carefully from cover to cover. Unlike a lot of commentaries on foreign culture, which tend to be trite, this author is very respectful of Egyptian culture without being ingratiating.
superb resource for the traveler.......2000-07-25
Wilson's book provided me with the "cultural common sense" that made for a successful stay in Egypt in June 2000. Her chatty tone invited me, as a reader, into her own experiences living in Egypt and set a context for me to be open to the warmth of the Egyptians as well as to be prepared for the very real challenges of travel here. While other books provided guidance to the sights, Wilson's provided guidance to the people and customs. I'll be returning to Egypt for future work and will rely on her book as a continuing resource.
Must Buy for anyone moving or travelling to Egypt.......2000-06-22
Thank God for this book! I recently have been accepted for a job in Egypt and boy did this book help me prepare. Without it I don't think I would have made it through. It's content is rich and full of great tips on local custom and it is truly in depth about the "do's & don'ts" when you get there. Highly recommended.
Essential reading!.......1999-12-20
Before heading off for Egypt, make sure that you read this book. It is invaluable!

Customer Reviews:
A very accurate description of what to expect.......1999-10-18
I found this book to be 97% accurate of what my experiences were for the week I spent in Damascus and immediate areas. I highly recommend anyone planning a trip to Syria to use this book as a guide to understanding Syrian customs. Coleman South's attention to the details of everyday life helped immensely. The Syrian people were indeed friendly and became even more so when they found out I was an American. I would only add that since Culture Shock: Syria! was written, information access is widespread, as judged by the forest of satellite dishes seen on rooftops and CNN in my hotel rooms.

Customer Reviews:
If you have completed a dot-to-dot puzzle, this is for you!.......2000-06-03
The system that Michelle Carley has developed is simple in its design and powerful in its application. If a small business owner can do a "dot-to-dot" puzzle to generate a picture, following the numbers and letters in the EZ Bookkeeping system will generate a financial picture of her/his enterprise. With this picture in hand, the entrepreneur can make informed business decisions. Not only that, but the entrepreneur really understands the details of where the accounting information is coming from, an skill that all entrepreneurs need to understand. I would encourage any entrepreneur to use the EZ Bookkeeping System for 6 months to get a good feel for how the numbers on the financial statements are summarized. If the process is applied consistently, it can make the difference in the profitability and success of the enterprise.

Antislavery Moderate.......2000-03-30
This is a biography of Leonard Bacon (1802-1881) a Congregational minister from Connecticut, a newspaper columnist and social reformer, a moderate opponent of slavery and an advocate of African colonization.
Bacon, like many white Northern clergy of his day, considered African slavery an evil, but advocated gradual, rather than immediate abolition of slavery. For many years he supported the American Colonization Society, which sought to settle freed African-American slaves in Liberia, a privately owned colony in Africa. The ACS saw itself as a humanitarian and missionary endeavor, which would facilitate the gradual abolition of slavery and help to Christianize and civilize Africa in the process. The ACS made the implictly racist assumption that free blacks could never flourish in the predominantly white United States.
Bacon, as an advocate of colonization, was at odds with proslavery southerners, who objected to any interference with slavery. He also clashed with immediate abolitionists, like William Lloyd Garrison, who saw colonization as a cruel scheme to deport free blacks.
Hugh Davis does an excellent job in presenting primary source material in its historical context, weaving an engaging narrative of a figure who was neither a glamorous hero nor a notorious villain in this chapter of American history. This book would be helpful for anyone who wishes to understand a moral stance on slavery that has lately been discredited, but was once the opinion of many northern Americans.
Davis also describes other aspects of Bacon's career and his personal life, including his efforts to organize the national structure of the Congregational Church and his sister, Delia's, infamous attempt to prove that the works of Shakespeare were really written by their ancestor, Sir Francis Bacon, and her consequent descent into insanity.

Professional counselor Pam Vredevelt constantly hears the question, "How do I let go of the pain I feel?" Whether it is a soured friendship or dissatisfying job, a wayward child, or unrealistic expectations, every person has to deal with lingering disappointment and its clouding effect on attitude and relationships. God does not intend that pain to cripple, distort, and consume his children. Getting "unstuck" is possible, Pam writes, through the use of a few simple and practical tools that lead to peace of mind and tranquility of heart. We've all heard the expression, "Let go and let God." With compassion and warmth, Pam Vredevelt shows how.

a CLASSIC must-read.......2005-07-19
Smokey Robinson is truly one of the most-gifted talented singers-songwriters, producers, writers, arrangers, composers, etc. ever been 'round in the music game since we grew up in the likes of Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye, Barry White, Satchmo, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Patti Labelle, Luther Vandross, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, etc. which we talked about alot in the world and creativity of music. Yet David Ritz is such a Fantastic music writer and critic (as MisterMaxx said in 2000) who talks about the lives, trials and temptations of various artists (i.e. Marvin Gaye, Bill Withers, Aretha Franklin, Barry White, Etta James, etc.) incl. songwriters, producers, movie and TV stars, etc. He's truly one of my heroes and also my all-time favorite. I luv him to death. I dig him on permanent basis or else on frequent basis I mean. He maybe the sounds of world's famous authors out there who are ill and real underrated y'know that discusses what's going on between the music scene, the movie scene, politics, religion, education, etc. If u luv David Ritz, I recommend u'll luv some good I mean best well-known authors or book writers like Michael Eric Dyson, Cornel West, Kevin Powell, Mark Anthony Neal, Nelson George, Marc Eliot, Leonard Feather, Gene Lees, Gary Giddins, etc.
Ok back 2 what I said on the memoir by Smokey (whose real name is William Robinson) is b/c this book is very interesting and mostly good 2 read. He truly is the baddest man in the music world since Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye, among others. It deals w/ his past as a music star, dealing w/ family problems incl. his mom leaving him behind at an earlier age, how did he created and formed the group SM & the Miracles, when did he met & worked w/ Berry Gordy, the founder and creator of Hitsville Records now known today as Motown, how he got addicted 2 drugs and soon gave his life up to the Lord and so on and on. He did had a gospel album put out last yr. so hopefully sooner or later I'll cop it. I 'member 1 time I wasn't into 'cuz that's not the gospel side of Smokey IMO, so I changed my mind 'bout that to see it's still good or not.
Books I recommend are:
1) Divided Soul: The Life of Marvin Gaye
2) Brother Ray: Ray Charles' Own Story (get the '04 edition that incls. the final days of Bro. Ray written by author David Ritz himself)
3) The 9 Steps to Financial Freedom by Suze Orman
4) Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill
5) Dianetics by L. Ron Hubbard
6) Emerging Church and Emerging Worship all by Dan Kimball
7) How to Make Friends and Influence People and How to Start Worrying and Start Living all by Dale Carniege
8) Man in the Mirror by Patrick Morley (One of my fav. authors to date!)
9) The 7 Habits of Very Effective People by Stephen Covey
10) On Becoming a Leader by Warren Bennis
There sum more I may add a lil bit later on. So enjoy the bk.
Love, Drugs and Redemption.......2005-01-30
Smokey has been such a major influence in R&B, and is such a prolific songwriter, that I don't see how you can not find his life interesting. I love his music, and liked the book. It's as though he recovered from drug addiction and was washing himself clean by spilling his guts. It covers the influence of his family upbringing in Detroit; his rise to fame; the MOTOWN years; love and loss. You feel close to this man after you read his story. He's not perfect but he has a whole lot of soul.
This book only takes you up to 1987...and it's 2005. Since he released an inspirational gospel lp- Food for the Spirit- in 2004 one can only assume the faith healing had a major impact. The writing is fast and breezy, an easy read. I'd buy it if I were you.
Smokin'!.......2004-07-10
Just returned from seeing Smokey in concert tonight. He is an awesome performer you should see if you get the chance! This book lets you see inside this man's mind as his music lets you see inside his heart.
Pat's Opinion.......2000-04-07
Smokey Robinson is not afraid to honestly and frankly outline the events that have transpired in his life. One has to appreciate the clarity and detail he uses in expressing the downfall of his marriage and his drift into drug use. Clearly a movie should be in the making.

Book Description
Stanley Ely says that when the fiftieth or so person confronted him with a skeptical, "You mean you're Jewish, and you're from Texas?" he decided to do more than smile and say, "Yes." The result is this funny, caustic and nostalgic tale in the tradition of popular regionally and ethnically focused memoirs.
Around the beginning of this century, Ely's parents (as young children) and grandparents immigrated to Galveston, fleeing oppression as Jews in Russia and Romania. Their arrival sets Ely's memoir in motion. Combining the stories of the author's grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, siblings and friends and including an abundance of family photos, the book continues until today, as Ely faces his own senior years living in New York. Though the book is not a typical "coming out" story, the reader also learns of Ely's gradual and at times reluctant acceptance of himself as a gay man.
The story of Ely's family and their friends reflects the impressive growth of Dallas and its Jewish population in the first half of this century. As he narrates the building of new lives in Texas, Ely also portrays the integration of a minority segment of Jewish immigrants in America outside the great cities of the North.
Of himself, the author tells of growing up in Dallas within the security of an intensely Jewish society. Then he prepares for the moment of his first departure for college in the North, and he thinks of his mother's arrival from Russia as a girl of eight. Of his own first significant step away from Texas, he says his mother "probably knew-and later I also realized-that that was the eventual crossing of an ocean for me."
By now, Ely has lived in Manhattan for four decades. Yet he finds himself telling friends, "I'm going home for Passover" as he prepares for another annual trip to Texas. Once there, he takes a fresh look and concludes that Texas Jews are different from those elsewhere: they have dual citizenship, in Judaism and in Texas.
