Worse than the Internal Revenue Code.......1997-12-31

Granted the area of partnership taxation and S corp taxation are confusing, this book is actually even harder to understand and follow than the actual code section itself. The organization of the book is hard to follow. In programming terms, it's like a spaghetti. Links point to everywhere of the code section but does not follow a logical pattern. You're better off reading the internal revenue code itself.

This is a fantastic book because of its uncomplicated questions and common-sense answers that are to the point.

I bought the book about a year ago (mid 2005) from the Community Associations Institute and paid $23.95 for a brand new copy. Asking $29.95 for a used copy is no bargain.

I read it and wept. What a load of nonsense. This woman sued her Homeowner's Association over a mold issue and has the nerve to write this book?

Thje best part is, that all her friends reviewed it and gave it 5 stars. Take a good look. All the 5 star reviews are done by people who only reviewed this book and no others. Coincidence? Please.

The book is a fraud, just like Hickenbottom. The HOA queen and an industry beneficiary who makes money from all this stuff.

Being that I got my copy for free from a personal friend of mine at the CAI, I really hate to complain.

But being an expert on HOA's through my personal experiences and triumphs, I must state that I could have done a better job reporting the issues.

All in all, a good attempt, but next time a little more research and fair and balanced reporting.

I know this Hickenbottom. She was the one writing for the LA Times misleading people back then before they fired her. She makes money of Homeowners Associations so how can she be subjective???

She is a CAI member and only out to make money off the HOA industry.

I tried to read the whole book, but got sick to my stomach with the lies and misrepresentations.

Read Privatopia instead. Unless you are a wanna be dictator on an HOA board that is.

Life meets Literature.......2002-01-28

"American Commander in Spain" is a vivid account of the last years in the life of Robert Merriman. The book was written by his wife, who followed Merriman when he went to fight in the Spanish Civil War. The book will not be helpful to the profesional historian, save perhaps a few anecdotes that could link specific historical characters to specific places during the war. The book is also not a novel and cannot be read as a work with high literary intentions. Rather it is an interesting portrait of a man whose life has the special quality of blending reality and legend. Merriman became fiction when Hemingway, who met him during the war used him as the basis for his character Robert Jordan in "For whom the bell tolls." The work will therefore be of most interest to those readers looking for the sources where Literature drinks from Life and with some emotional attachment to the historical context.

...For when one reads about Robert Merriman it becomes clear that he was an american patriot searching for solutions to get his own country out of the Depression and later trying to stop the rise of Fascism in Europe. That his countrymen were so blind then (and it seems still now) cost them dearly in WWII. The insensitivity shown by these reviewers hurts most those of us who look up to the american volunteers in awe, not for their ideological beliefs, but for their sense of sacrifice and love for freedom. It is a sin against Humanity to see Merriman's death any other way. If there is a God and these other reviewers are ever judged, I only hope that all their sins will be remembered.

The Lincoln Brigade fought ON the side of the Communist Left ( Republicans) and participated in the many attrocities such as executions of the clergy, press,ect. They were funded by Eleanor Roosevelt who was a "closet" Communist,trained and sent to Spain to help send Spain into the Soviet orbit.

An eye-opener.......1999-10-15

Interesting, if for no other reason than to see for yourself the nature of the "true believers" of the Left. We now know that Americans participated in Stalin-inspired Trotskyite hunts within the ranks of the International Brigades. While Merriman almost certainly met his end at a Nationalist firing squad, how many American Reds met their end at Merriman's orders? The writing style of the book was in the nature of a justification of a cause that was morally bankrupt, even in the context of fighting fascism. I recommend the book to anyone who wishes to better understand the mindset of liberal thinking . . .

How to book for financial success.......2005-06-15

Dan Dorval really did a good job of starting with basic principles of money management, saving, and investing early in the book so that his later recommendations could be easily understood even by simpletons like me. Almost anyone would be well served if they followed even half of his recommendations. I don't know many people who do. Lack of knowledge combined with lack of discipline leads most people down the wrong path, but this book is so easy to understand, and gives such simple-to-follow instructions that there's no excuse not to just get up and do it already.

Financial Success.......2004-08-27

Dan Dorval not only explains in detail the general aspects to financial planning, but he gives you a step by step recipe for success. There are many examples in the book that will breakdown different financial situations we will encounter in our lives; whether just starting out or approaching retirement. Many of the examples he uses are even drawn up from his own personal experiences, which really adds to the validity of his advice. This also gives the book a warm feel, instead of a dry textbook feel you get from other financial books. I highly recommend this book and its a must for anyone looking for a bulletproof budget.

Helpful.......2004-06-29

I think that most financial advice is geared towards generating fees for the advice giver. This book does a great job of exploring this issue and provides assistance on avoiding this trap.

I found the section on Cash Management to be particularly helpful. A very clear example for a way for couples to run their checking accounts and avoid financial friction was provided.

It may be obvious to many in the financial world, but I had never heard of rebalancing a retirement account. This book gave a good explanation of why to do so. I modified my retirement account immediately after finishing the book.

A Very Impressive Lady!.......2006-01-27

Grace Hopper's contributions to computing were very impressive - I knew that before reading this book because I was a COBOL programmer. Nonetheless, "Admiral of the Cyber Sea" provided a very informative and interesting biography of this lady. It was also interesting to learn of the signal achievements of her siblings - reminding me of President Eisenhower, one of many "stars" in his household.

Born in 1906, Grace Hopper graduated from Vassar, and got a PhD in mathematics from Yale in 1933. She married in '43, and divorced 15 years later. During WWII she followed her grandfather (an admiral) and joined the Navy - WAVES division. At that time she wrote programs for the Mark I computer housed in Harvard - focus was on ballistic trajectories, and accomplished at the speed of 3 operations/second. The Mark I was an electro-mechanical giant - 50' long, 8' tall, and 8' deep, with 3 million wire connections and weighing about 5 tons, and only having 72 words of storage.

The term "Bug" came about when the Mark II was stopped by a relay failure - a moth had been trapped inside one of the relays. The moth was fished out, and taped to the computer's log book.

Hopper then went to work on compiler development, having foreseen their potential for drastically reducing programming efforts while reducing "bugs." Retired from the Navy Reserve in 1966 as a Commander.

However, the Navy soon realized it needed Hopper's continue service, and brought her back. She was impatient with bureaucracy - and displayed it with a clock that ran backwards and a Jolly Roger flag on her desk. One might suspect that Hopper would be one wedded to the "big iron" computers of her day - however, she early on saw the potential and value of microcomputers, and for networking minis.

Commodore Hopper received her new rank (equivalent to today's Rear Admiral) in 1983 at a White House ceremony attended by President Reagan. Retirement took place 12/86 on the deck of the U.S.S. Constitution - the Navy's oldest commissioned ship. The very next day civilian Hopper, twice retired from the Navy, reported for full-time work at DEC.

Grace Hopper died in 1992 at the age of 80, having worked and given almost daily speeches cross-country until the prior Summer. Truly an inspirational achiever!

An admirable lady described by less admirable author.......2005-01-25

I had a chance to hear Grace Hopper speak in 1970's in the early days of my own computer career. She was impressive then, and, after reading this book, I'm even more impressed by her career and her accomplishments, which were underrepresented in the 'computing history' to which I had previously been exposed. Through interviews and delving into untold amount of original source material, Ms. Williams has found MANY fascinating tidbits about Grace and the environment in which she lived and worked. For example, Grace DIDN'T invent the term computer bug. However, the interesting facts are strung together in an oft times confusing narrative - it took me much longer to read than usual. And the index didn't mention her engaging physical representation of a nanosecond. A worthwhile book, nonetheless, for those interested in computing history, and/or women who made a difference in technology.

The Admiral was a lady........2004-12-13

I was at a coctail party at a computer show when this lady in a white Navy uniform came it. It was Grace Hopper. Someone asked her for an autograph. Admirals don't need to carry pens around, so I promptly offered her mine. And after she signed one of her business cards for him, I said that I'd like one also, so she signed another. I still have it.

This all came back to me as soon as I saw this book. I picked it up, I opened it to a page where it talks about her first reporting to Howard Aiken at Harvard to work on the Mark I computer. Aiken handed her a manual and told her to write a program. Almost exactly twenty years after she was given the manual, the Army did exactly the same to me - here's a manual, here's the equasion I want solved.

Even in her advanced years at the time I met her, she was still one very bright lady. This was in the very early days of the PC, and she had a basic understanding that enabled her to predict many of the things that were going to happen while the rest of were stumbling around thinking about word processing.

Grace Hopper was quite a lady, and that's reflected in this book. Between 1934 and 1937 hers was the only Ph.D. in mathematics awarded to a female. It was quite a life that she led, and that too is reflected in this book. Adm. Hopper lived in a time when women didn't need to be educated, they were just going to be housewives, and they certainly weren't going to be Navy Admirals. This book is a story of one remarkable woman, but more than that it's the story of computing and of our changing times.

Meir Abulafia (ca. 1165-1244), commonly called Ramah, was born into the old Jewish aristocracy of Muslim Spain and educated in the best Judeo-Arabic tradition, but lived his whole life under the new political and cultural realities of Christian Spain. Mr. Septimus portrays Ramah's career as a lawyer, exegete, poet, and theologian in an age of rapid cultural change. His book describes the intellectual cross-fertilization and conflict that resulted from new connections with European Jewish communities to the north. It focuses, in particular, on the great controversy over the philosophical rationalism of Maimonides, which Ramah initiated and in which he played a major role.
