Customer Reviews:
Great source of Extra Income.......2006-03-15
I checked this book out of the library hoping to gain and idea or two on making some extra income. Boy was I surprised to gain an overabundance of ideas. This book includes many ideas that you can start with little or no money and little or no experience and training. This is exactly what most people are looking for. With the ideas gained from this book, I'm well on my way to earning some extra cash.
GREAT INFORMATIVE BOOK...............2000-11-04
Great book with over 100 ideas on earning extra income. This book offers great information on marketing, advertising, crafts, publishing, and many useful ideas for stay home moms. this book is well written and easy to follow. I graduated from High school last year. I go to college part-time, have my own place, a full-time job and thanks to the knowledge I gained from this book, I now have a part-time job, putting in my own hours whenever I can. This may not be the best book ever written, but it sure helped me out.... I recommend it highly, especially for young women just coming in to the work field.....
Not impressed.......2000-09-13
I really think this book would have been good if we were in the 1930-1950. We are in the year 2000 and all the extra income opportunities stated in this book are outdated. The author should keep up with the century we are in. You can't expect women in the year 2000 to raise animals for a leaving, nor cook for extra money, don't we do this already. What ever happened to computers? This book was offensive to me as a women!!!!
Excellent Source of Information.......1999-10-25
This book is a great source of ideas and information on making extra money. This book has something for everyone. The book also lists additional sources of information, ideas on finding clients, and sample pricing. I highly recommend this book to any woman that would like to supplement her family's income.
Good book but short.......1998-10-16
I would say get this as an accompaniment to the best home based businesses, I dont see the difference between the part time jobs she lists here and her full time jobs in the other books, but maybe you will. A good book but shorter than the others

Book Description
The foreword by Frank Lloyd Wright's grandson is a nostalgic and warm introduction to the absorbing account of the restoration. Each chapter takes the reader step by step through the fourteen-year project; the history of each building is amply illustrated with photographs of both the people and places. Biographical sketches and floor plans clearly delineate the changes to the original structures.
Chapters describing the fund-raising efforts, and the detailed planning that accompanied the restoration, bring to life the incredible dedication, time, and attention to detail from both volunteers and professionals that went into this massive project. The main chapters--the restoration of the Home and of the Studio--are fascinating accounts of what was uncovered from the original buildings, the innovations Wright had used through the years of his work on the place, and how the restoration was accomplished.
Throughout beautiful, full-color photographs reveal the depth of Wright's design acumen and the intensive labor lovingly lavished on the Home and Studio, while historic photographs and asides present compelling information. Wright's granddaughter, in the Afterword, reminds us all of the continuing need to protect Wright's message that "design matters." This book is a fitting tribute to his dictum. Published with The Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust.
160 pages, 118 full-color and 65 black-and-white photographs, and 10 floor-plan reproductions. Paperbound book, with flaps. Size: 8 x 11.5",

From a Bookseller.......2005-11-20
"The seeds of Frank Lloyd Wright's architectural philosophy are found in his Home and Studio at Oak Park, Illinois. It was here--from 1889 to 1909--that Wright tested his theories, which would coalesce into his famed Prairie style. Always experimenting with materials, forms, colors and the shaping of space, Wright constantly remodeled the Home and Studio, adapting to the changing needs of his family and work. By the 1970s, after the Home and Studio had been remodeled still more and sold several times, the unique structure, fabrics, and materials that so defined Wright's establishment had all but disappeared.
"Recognizing the importance of the Home and Studio, the city of Oak Park and the Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust (then the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio Foundation) set out to revitalize the community and preserve the historic building. Building a Legacy is a fascinating pictorial story of the incredible thirteen-year restoration effort.
"With conversational text, informative sidebars, and historic and present-day photographs and drawings, the book commemorates the dedicated efforts of community volunteers and paid workers. Covering the grassroots efforts to raise money, the detailed plan for the restoration, and the painstaking efforts necessary to complete the project, Building a Legacy documents this successful achievement of saving an intimate creation of one of the world's greatest architects."--Borders

Book Description
Frank Lloyd Wright's residential architecture in and around Oak Park, Illinois, in the early part of this century constitutes some of the architect's most recognizable and distinctive work. From the Oak Park Home and Studio itself, where Wright lived and practiced during this time, to the signature Robie House in Chicago, the extraordinary work from Wright's Prairie period embodies the intense creativity of his early career. Taking his cue from the vast, virgin grasslands that surrounded the Chicago area, Wright produced homes that reflect the land upon which they were built-- with unbroken roof planes, sheltering eaves, and dramatic, sweeping lines. This volume offers a succinct, site-by-site showcase of Wright's first major contribution to American design: the Prairie House.
Among the homes selected are the Frederick C. Robie House, the Mrs. Thomas Gale House, the William H. Winslow House, and the Dana-Thomas House. Exceptional color photography of Wright's finely wrought interiors-- including his own drafting room at the Home and Studio-- as well as bold exterior perspectives offer readers an inspiring view of Wright's unique architectural mission. With an informative introduction, excerpts from Wright's own writings, and rarely seen archival photographs, Frank Lloyd Wright and the Prairie is a must for all those interested in Wright's work and this definitive period in American architecture.
"We of the Middle West are living on the prairie. The prairie has a beauty of its own and we should recognize and accentuate this natural beauty, its quiet level."--Frank Lloyd Wright, 1908

Book Description
In the field of psychology, beginning in the 1950s, Eleanor J. Gibson nearly single-handedly developed the field of perceptual learning with a series of brilliant studies that culminated in the seminal work, Perceptual Learning and Development. An Odyssey in Learning and Perception brings together Gibson's scientific papers, including difficult-to- find or previously unpublished work, along with classic studies in perception and action. Gibson introduces each paper to show why the research was undertaken and concludes each section with comments linking the findings to later developments. A personal essay touches on the questions and concerns that guided her research.

Book Description
R.E.M.'s debut album, released in 1983, was so far removed from the prevailing trends of American popular music that it still sounds miraculous and out of time today. J. Niimi tells the story of the album's genesis - with fascinating input from Don Dixon and Mitch Easter. He also investigates Michael Stipe's hypnotic, mysterious lyrics, and makes the case for Murmur as a work of Southern Gothic art.
Customer Reviews:
Between thought & expression.......2007-04-24
"Murmur" is to me what "Sgt. Pepper" is to listeners fifteen or twenty years older: a touchstone that, for its unevenness and eclectic mishmash manages to somehow sum up an era. I only "really" like maybe 7-8 of its dozen tracks, in fact. While less than perfect, it does leave a powerful impression. To me, it reminds me more than any other album of music heard in my dreams. As the band's name and the record's title represent, REM's full-length debut conjures up a murky sensibility, an idealistic yearning, an inchoate pre-lingual substrate, and a literary aesthetic that I admire. This CD fluctuates, shimmers, and subsides. Different listenings can reveal unstable tectonics and shifting echoes.
So, I came to J. Niimi's book with curiosity and a bit of dread-- for instance, I have not read the lyric sheets that conclude his study. I prefer to keep veiled their mystery. But, I agree that this quality of being suspended between multiple meanings as a listener to "Murmur" accounts for this album's primary merit and justifies most of all its inclusion in this series.
This factor, what a reviewer below called "indeterminacy," is crucial to Niimi's locating this album within a variety of social, theoretical, and practical aspects of its genesis and realization. Less of a song-by-song obsessive studio detailed book than others in the 33 1/3 series, Niimi's analysis takes it more from an English major's perspective. But he goes beyond the expected, if correctly applied here, references to Flannery O'Connor, Faulkner, and Walker Percy. The thought he gives to literary criticism and theories of language I found refreshing and unexpected. This contribution may put off some readers, but perhaps since I share Niimi's training I enjoyed this section most.
Like many younger writers, he combines personal reminiscences from his formative years in suburban Chicago and his later stint in Georgia itself. A good detail is comparing the boombox he played his "Murmur" cassette on to that of John Cusack, a native of the same area and about the same age as the author, who played another music-addled doppelganger of Niimi in that period's film "Say Anything." His descriptions reach beyond suburban malls, however. From his own Georgia residence, his vignettes convey well to those of us unfamiliar with this cluttered landscape and musty terrain that REM knew its own eerieness and its haunted aura. and affective reactions with reflections on the New South, kudzu, the graphic design, the cassette as an symbol of the early 80s, the Reagan administration, and a considerable amount of "poetics" as he engages in a "close reading" of REM's artifact.
The book, for all its strengths, does share with other 33 1/3 books a tendency to gush over the musical genius of its creators. For all my admiration of this album, I simply do not find some of its tracks that effective. I would contend that it is not as successful song by song, but (the "Sgt. Pepper" comparison holds here) still manages the have its sum add up to more than its parts. Considerably less attention than I expected is given to the actual recording of this album. This is the book's notable shortcoming. Don Dixon and especially Mitch Easter's production needed more in-depth treatment to better convey the technology that enabled the pre-mechanical sounds and the pre-20c feel of this album paradoxically to emerge.
Niimi has linked this album to his own intellectual growth, and shows what cultural criticism of popular art can do when planned well. He defends "Murmur" as part of the canon, and goes beyond his own reception of the record to place it within sophisticated contexts that its makers themselves probably half-understood. Niimi takes the challenge of delving into an LP that hovers between thought and expression, one more nuanced and elusive than many more straightforward and calculated LPs that have been included in the 33 1/3 series as typical fan favorites and critical darlings. I did notice the typeface did shrink here compared to other 33 1/3 entries. This suggests that Niimi invested considerable effort in delivering to the publishers as thorough a study as he could within what were presumably a limited number of pages, given the series' CD-sized format. Under these implied restrictions, Niimi did well. I may disagree with a few of his assertions, but he makes his claims carefully and backs them up efficiently. He's prepared a solid, thoughtful, and suitably wide-ranging investigation into the album as a relic of his own past and a product of its own time.
The Key to the Album.......2007-03-12
Even twenty plus years on, Murmur is still as hauntingly evocative as it was on its release. The novelty of the sound has diminished with the passage of time, but the details still compel -- the subdued, echoing vocals at the beginning of Pilgrimage, the backwards guitar in Perfect Circle, the strange instrumental bit between Shaking Through and We Walk, even the eerie images on the album cover. Niimi's book is a unique in-depth look at the the Murmur recording sessions, and the environment that gave birth to it. It is utterly indispensable reading for anyone touched by the album, or the band.
Niimi is at home in the recording studio, and provides a blow by blow account of the production details. I'd recommend reading it as you listen to the album - details buried in the song will emerge that you hadn't notice before. Throughout, we get a sense of the band's breathtaking originality and willingness to take risks. Buck and Stipe's contributions are well-known, but Niimi highlights the unique contributions of less obvious figures. Mitch Easter's production flourishes are all over the album, and are responsible for much of its unique, timeless quality; Easter and Don Dixon's song sequencing gives the album a strong, novelistic flow; and Bill Berry emerges as the unsuing genius of R.E.M., as composer and multi-instrumentalist.
I've read a number of books in the 33 1/3 series, and to my mind they should all be like this one. When you love an album, you want to get into it as deeply as you can. Niimi's meticulously-researched, vividly written work says all that needs to be said about the album and its unique place in rock history.
S'alright.......2006-11-07
The problem with J. Niimi's Murmur of the great 33 1/3rd series of books about specific albums, is that it's ironic. Unlike Murmur, which is more a landscape of words set to another landscape built by music, Niimi gets all academic and a bit bloated when attempting to look in-depth at R.E.M.'s first full-length album. In a chapter on lyrics, Niimi criticizes those who try to analyze Michael Stipe's lyrics, and spends pages upon pages criticizing two critics who did. This makes me wonder if all that stuff we're introduced to regarding Southern Gothic and the influence of the New South on R.E.M. holds true.
Like the rest of the 33 1/3 series, the best part of the book comes when Niimi tries to reconstruct the making of the album. Other than that, Murmur is a high-falootin' college paper. Not bad, just not my style.
Arguably the most profound 33 1/3 Book.......2006-08-15
"Murmur" was extremely important to me when it was released and over the past 20+ years, so I avoided this volume of the exquisite 33 1/3 series for a while. I wasn't familiar with Niimi's writing at the time, and had too many passionate feelings of my own about the album's psychogeography and visionary expressionism to tolerate someone so much younger doing a hack job. After skimming over the excellent lyrical analysis and the origin of kudzu as 'background' for the musical milieu behind the record's imagery, I knew I had to own this 33 1/3 as well. It turned out to be a must re-read last year, just as "Murmur" itself was placed time and time again on my turntable the hot summer it was released in the mid-80s. I kept Niimi's sweet tome in the pockets of my baggy pants for weeks, his creative extrapolations of the album's content and musical statements roiling around in my mind at bus stops covered in debris and fauna, skimmed again and again before sets bands played at clubs. A perfect read for a perfect album -- I actually think new copies of "Murmur" should be sold with the book inside the cellophane.
Sorry folks, too pretentious for rock and roll.......2006-05-06
This, to me, is the weakest in the great 33 1/3 series that I have read. While the author is certainly knowledgable and learned, the prose is thick and I found myself skimming through long passages. This album was a seminal one for me as well (although I was slightly older than the author at time of release) and so while my interest in the topic was very high, I didn't feel this book added anything to my appreciation of it, other than some interesting sequences regarding recording details. I believe that rock and roll can be written about from a serious and analytical point of view, but this reads like a bad thesis from a general studies major.

Good and thorough.......2000-06-18
Platt's book is excellent. Thorough accounts of the recording sessions that lead to Murmur, a fine (if idiosnycratic) song by song attempt at interpretation and an excellent overview of the album and its reception. My minor quibble relates to Platt's Michael Stipe - centric view of the band, but the book is still a great read and a nice addition to the "R.E.M. canon." :)
