Sometimes less is more, as in Don Philpott's guide to Dominica, St. Lucia, Martinique, Grenada, St. Vincent, and the Grenadines. A book on the whole Caribbean wouldn't allow for the detail on camping, festivals, sports, shopping, restaurants, and whale watching. A small Grenadine island such as Bequia would get short shrift, if it got any mention at all, but Philpott not only includes it, he tells when the ferries sail and how much they cost. Philpott describes the Windward Islands so well, it's tempting to extend the vacation and check out a few more islands while you're there.

Customer Reviews:
Best book on FSA I have ever read.......2007-09-28
I like its strategic focus and case-oriented approach. The FSAP is terrific. In this book, financial statements finally found its correct place: describe the strategic decisions made by management. This book is never dry. Instead, it is vivid, fascinating, and a great reading for anyone who is serious with a career in equity research.
Worst textbook ever!.......2007-04-30
After three years of graduate school and two Master's degrees (MPH/MBA)I have to say this was the WORST textbook I was unfortunate enough to encounter. I wish I could get a refund for both the cost of the book and the pain and suffering I endured while trying to read it. If a professor tries to get you to buy this book please say "NO"!
HORRIBLE BOOK EVER.......2007-02-22
I am in an MBA program too. I have to use this book as a textbook for the course, Financial Statement Analysis. I have taken Managerial Financing before and done a very good job on that course. But it doesn't help me a lot to understand this terrible book. It isn't that course's fault. I appreciate that I have taken some financing course before I use this book. I can't understand this book very well totally because this book is terrible. Both textbooks for Financing and this course are published by the same publisher, Thomas?..I couldn't believe how different those two books are.
In this book, Pepsi case keeps confusing most readers. Most equations are not highlighted so you can not find them easily and quickly. Homework is not designed for the students who are studying this book but for the authors themselves. Fortunately, our professor sends his master copy to us. It will help us understand homework more, but unfortunately after we have handed in our results.
If anyone who teaches FSA, please do not use this book as your textbook for your students. Pls, pls, pls..Even though you are an expert on accounting or finance, your students will still suffer from your course and almost learn nothing from this TERRIBLE book.
This book sucks if you're learning for the first time........2006-09-26
This book is TERRIBLE. I am an engineer in an MBA program. The book is supposedly for non accountants, but I don't see how it's possible to understand this book if you're not an accountant. If you're unfortunate and have to use this book, find a good book that you can actually read to supplement the subject.
There's a lot mumbo jumbo using technical terms that could be much easier stood with a table and reference to specific numbers in the table. There has got to be a better way to learn finacial statement analysis.

Customer Reviews:
Thorough treatment of financial statement analysis.......2006-08-14
Stickney's book is not for beginners to the subject, as I believe many of those who have rated the book poorly have found. For those with some background in basic accounting however, it is indispensable.
Great book for FSA.......2006-07-29
I'm a rising second year MBA student at one of the prominent business schools. I used this book as one of the text books for FSA class after basic accounting and footnote accounting classes. This book is very useful in bringing the picture together to analyze and model a company. It is very practical. I have used it as a reference throughout my internship at an investment management firm.
I have read a few other books on security analysis and financial reporting. Most do a great job in discussing the individual topics but don't help in how to apply them in building a model. This book assumes that you know your accounting basics as well as in depth knowledge of certain accounting topics e.g. Revenue recognition issues, securitization, etc. This book does a great job in going through the steps when your boss asks you to analyze a company, prepare its model and do a pro-forma.
The authors used the real world example of a complicated company (Pepsi) to demonstrate the FSA steps. This was invaluable.
The only reason I gave this book a 4 star is that I'd like to have seen a better job on Industry Analysis. But, nevertheless, it is a very useful book.
This is definitely not for hobbyist. As the expensive price indicates, the authors are targetting this book towards business school students who, because of already high 100+k opportunity cost of attending b-school, would not balk at paying a hefty sum to fill in a definite gap amongst FSA books. This book fills that gap well.
Don't judge this book by its cover! Not for beginners, but definitely for the future accounting professionals.......2006-01-27
This is a very highly detailed accounting book. It is definitely not designed for novices. If you already have a good beginning foundation in accounting, this book is an excellent sequel to help you better fine tune and master those accounting skills!
Excellent Treatment of Financial Statement Analysis.......2005-07-08
I bought this book for my MBA financial stmt analysis class despite a couple of negative reviews here on amazon. I'm glad I did. Contrary to what some have said I found the book to be very well organized - I read it straight through, and now I use it as a reference. It provides a great overview of of statement analysis and does a great job of examining the accounting theory that goes into those statements. This book is definately not for someone who hasn't had any accounting courses previously though - it assumes some level of understanding of basic accounting concepts, which may explain why a couple of the reviewers found it confusing. This is not for you if you are an "investment hobbyist" without much prior accounting. If you're looking to go beyond the basics of debits and credits and need to develop a better understanding of financial statements, this will do it for you. The only thing I would like to have seen is some of the more advanced topics addressed since that seems to be lacking in all fin stmt analysis books out there, but I suppose the book is long enough as it is at 1100 pages!
Expensive but Confusing.......2004-08-02
If you would like to learn more about Financial Statement Analysis, this should probably not a right book of you. The author have put many simple ideas into complicated words, not to mention the poor demonstration of cases. The examples are based on too much assumptions, but the basis for these assumptions are not clearly explained (which should be one of the most crucial parts). In addition, the questions in the "industry analysis" are set by the answer, (that means he already know company A is an airline, company B is a computer manufacturer, then he merely give the financial statements to you, and analyse it as if he doesnt know which company was in which industry), so he must be able find his way to draw his conclusion--that A's statement is A, B's statement is B, no matter how similar the two statements are. Ridiculous!
By the way, What you can learn from this book can be found on the internet, without charge.
The book does not deserve its price.

Book Description
In its more than 200-year history, the office of the President of the United States has undergone a variety of dramatic changes. Because our founding fathers left the privileges and responsibilities of the job constitutionally vague and ill-defined, each occupant of the office--from George Washington to Bill Clinton--has tried to set the limits of presidential power as he has seen fit based on the domestic and international circumstances of the day as well as on his own ambition and abilities. In The Power of the American Presidency, Michael A. Genovese, one of the best known and respected scholars on the presidency, takes students on a journey through the personalities and politics of some of the most fascinating and at times powerful men in American history. Organized chronologically, the text offers an overview of the evolution and elasticity of presidential power by providing case studies of each president's personal characteristics and the defining historical events of each administration. From Abraham Lincoln, who stretched the boundaries of presidential power during the Civil War, to nearly forgotten presidents like Van Buren, Garfield, and Fillmore, who led weak administrations with limited power, Genovese presents the history of our country's highest office with insight, balanced judgment, and humor. The Power of the American Presidency will be widely used in undergraduate courses on the American Presidency as well as in courses on American history, American studies, and political science. It will also be of interest to anyone who wishes to gain a keener insight into the workings of the presidency.
Customer Reviews:
This is OK.......2003-12-12
This book gives very brief descriptions of most of the presidents. If you do not know much about the history of the presidency, this book might be useful. However, I would recomend a much more detailed book.
Genovese uses his own ranking system to put the presidents in order. He seems to base most of the ranking on whether or not the president improved the power that the office had not on actual policies. Therefore "administrative" presidents do not do well in his system no matter what policies they implemented.
The tables that Genovese uses contradict each other. Presidents are given different rank numbers in different tables. He also uses the same quotes multiple times for some of the presidents.
This book is ok for a quick overview of the presidency, but does not provide for many detailed profiles outside of a few presidents.
Growth of Power.......2003-04-23
I like this book! "The Power of the American Presidency" is an informative and enjoyable book to read. Genovese gives the reader a broad view of the roots of the American presidency and its powers. Readers will see how some presidents excelled while others lagged behind, how some presidents developed and strengthened presidential powers to lead the country forward while others weakened them and failed to lead....
Genovese describes how a president was accused of breaking the law, or at least? steered around the US Constitution? in order to save a nation, how some loved the position of president while others couldn't wait for their term to end. Genovese shows us the presidents that made the top of the list of great presidents, those who landed on the bottom, and how others took the deep plunge into presidential obscurity. The reader will also discover which president served the longest term, which served the shortest, which president disliked politics.... But most importantly, Genovese explains the development of the American presidency and the expansion of its power.
"The Power of the American Presidency" entices the reader's thirst for knowledge and serves as a good jumping point for further study on the American presidency and presidential powers. Genovese's writing is smart, crisp, and at times witty but always clear. I like that this book can be read from beginning to end, as I did, or it can be used as a reference tool, as I frequently do. I wholeheartedly recommend this book.

Book Description
Use of military force without a declaration of war has been a weapon in the arsenal of U.S. presidents for the last 200 years. Force has become an increasingly more (relevant) foreign policy action in the post-Cold War world. This comprehensive resource approaches the study of the use of force from several theoretical approaches: the historical record, which includes regional analyses of Latin America/the Caribbean, Europe, Asia, the Middle East/North Africa, and Sub-Saharan Africa; the data sets that focus on the use of force; the international level, which includes democratic peace, multilateralism, and Yugoslavia; domestic politics, which includes Congress, the media, and public opinion; executive-congressional relations, including political and constitutional issues; ethics; and theories of decision making on the use of force. The volume includes a list of important concepts and terms and a selected bibliography, as well as suggested readings following each entry, and an index. It will be of interest to students and scholars in political science, U.S. history, international relations, and foreign policy. Academic libraries and selected public libraries will also be interested in this comprehensive volume.
Book Description
The Georgian-style house--whether a classic building on a Georgetown street or an elegant brick house in a leafy suburb--is considered by some to be the most desirable and comfortable of homes. The Georgian style has stood the test of time. Houses built over two hundred years ago still stand as proud and dignified as when they were first erected, and the style continues to be popular in contemporary domestic architecture.
The first part of this book describes the development of the Georgian style, beginning with its introduction in the early eighteenth century in Britain and the colonies. In the 1740s, metropolitan areas on America's east coast, particularly the cities of Boston, Philadelphia, Charleston, and Alexandria, were beginning to show excellent examples of Georgian architecture.
In the second part of the book, a chapter is devoted to each element of the house--roofs, stonework, brick, doors and windows, fireplaces, and moldings are examined, stressing the need for today's occupants to understand the ideas, techniques, and materials employed by the original builders. This book enables the preservationist, historian, architect, carpenter, and decorator to understand the craftsmanship and context of the Georgian house.
Written with the owner of a modest family house in mind, the text also devotes due attention to the great houses of the period. The book overflows with practical advice on paint colors, wallpapers, and other decor, and provides an invaluable guide to suppliers and sources of further information.
Customer Reviews:
From the home of Georgian architecture.......2004-02-12
This book talks mostly about British examples, but should be all the more interesting to Americans because of it, since everything here is but a copy of everything there. The first few chapters contain a lot of interesting and detailed history, but the emphasis eventually turns to restoring windows, doors, floors, wallpaper, and so on, to genuine Georgian.
The author scoffs at the readily available low-cost reproductions, often pointing out their inaccuracies--pure white was never used for windows, for instance--but then again, what do you expect from a book with a Forward by the Queen of England? Abundant photos accompany the text, fully justifying the book's price.

Book Description
For the first time in operatic history, this revealing and long-awaited biography uncovers the tragically short yet elegant life and glorious career of the beautiful California soprano Sibyl Sanderson. A great read for opera romantics of all generations and a true story with all the drama of period fiction, this biography is enhanced by Jack Winsor Hansen's complete access to the Sanderson family archives and decades of dedicated research about her life in Europe and the United States. It includes exclusive, previously unpublished correspondence, diaries, memoirs, and extensive interviews with the people who knew Sanderson and those around her. Hardcover.
Customer Reviews:
SING OUT SIBYL!!.......2006-09-20
Maria Callas had Oristotle Onassis to complicated her life and jepordize her singing career, Sibyl Sanderson had Jules Massenet. I doubted a four hundred page book was necessary about the life of this opera singer, but by the time I finished the story, I wanted two hundred more pages of information. This book is well written, researched and informational. I thought I knew who Sibyl Sanderson was - a one operatic hit soprano (THIAS) who coasted through a singing career under the lustfilled eyes of composer Jules Massenet. How wrong I was! I couldn't put this book down once I got into the story. It's as much about the life of Massenet as it is Sanderson. The author captures the period perfectly. He takes you on Sibyl's path of self destruction to the point where you want to shout out "be careful!" Beautifully written. Buy it!
thorough biography of early, tragic opera diva.......2005-03-29
Born in 1864 in Sacramento, CA, Sibyl Sanderson was the first in a long line of celebrity opera singers running to Maria Callas and Beverly Sills in recent years. Yet, the first of this line of modern divas, she was vulnerable in ways that those following her were not--vulnerable both to illusions she created in her own mind and also to the designs of others on her. These others included Gilded Age tycoons and European royalty she met as she performed throughout the U. S. and Europe. Her marriage to a Cuban Lothario named Antonio Terry was especially destructive. With little protections against the harmful penchants of her own nature or guidance from any cautionary tales in the new environment of celebrity, media, high financial stakes, and notoriety by association that many sought from her, Sanderson suffered breakdowns onstage and practically continuous emotional pain and confusion. She died at 38 from an illness made worse by her ignoring her doctor's advice; which led some to believe she had intentionally brought on her own death. Hansen's is a voluminous biography of this latter 19th-century opera star whose fame in her day has been eclipsed by others who followed in her pattern of international fame, cult-like adulation, and impetuousness. With research from papers kept by Sanderson's relatives--often quoting from these--and a skillful balance of the many sides of her life, it's a basic resource for any study of Sanderson. Winsor uses his impressive background in music for a biography that is sympathetic and insightful.
The Sibyl SAnderson Story.......2005-03-26
This is an interesting story not only of a famously wilful and brilliant singing actress, but also of life in late Nineteenth Century Paris. It mentions many key figures in opera of the period, and serves as a cautionary tale for aspiring artists as well as a good read for aficionados and those who love a good story - in this case a true story.

Book Description
On November 7, 1938, Herschel Grynszpan, a 17-year old Polish-German Jew, walked into the German Embassy in Paris and shot Third Secretary, Ernst vom Rath, who died shortly after. Vom Rath's death triggered the destruction and mahem which became known as Kristallnacht, or The Night of Broken Glass, resulting in the death of hundreds, the razing of 265 synagogues and 200 houses, the demolition of 7,500 business establishments, and the incarceration of 30,000 Jews in concentration camps. Herschel Grynszpan was immediately arrested. France's foremost criminal lawyer took over his defense. On June 8, 1940, two days before the French Government evacuated Paris, the youth was indicted for murder. A month later he was in Nazi hands, being interrogated by the Gestapo in anticipation of a major show trial. Little has been known in the past about this extraordinary young man. Using German documents never before revealed, including a startling coded testament, Gerald Schwab examines his background and the events culminating in the shooting. The book describes, in considerable detail, Grynszpan's experiences in French and German hands and his trial which was to become Nazi Germany's justification of the Holocaust. It also challenges some commonly held ideas about the cause of the shooting and its aftermath. The Day the Holocaust Began describes the life of a mixed-up, emotionally immature youngster who developed into one of the most amazing and unlikely heroes of modern history, demonstrating the power of the human spirit against overwhelming odds. Anyone interested in modern European history, the Nazi Government, the persecution of the European Jews, as well as students of the Holocaust and its many ramifications, will find The Day the Holocaust Began invaluable reading.
