Yoga for many is not just a way of getting in shape or a way of reducing stress--it is more of a way of life or a path. As a result, yoga for these people tends to inform much of the decisions in life from grocery shopping to planning trips.
This is a great book for the later. I am presently using this book to plan a trip in the Winter, and there are so many great yoga adventures profiled that it will be hard to decide.
This is truely a wonderfully written and organized book for the people out there who want to put their toes in the sand and relax in the tropical breezes, but who also want a well-instructed yoga class to do once or twice a day.

Good but..........2007-03-26

When I placed the order for this book I was looking for the latest edition of this title but in paperback (to cut cost) but unfortunately I rushed in my order and did not notice the word "Working papers" on the cover. When I received the book i was shocked to see it was only a 700+ pages book with only empty tables and place to answer the exercises which were listed in the main text book!!!
so I returned the book the same day! yet I am rating the book 4 star because it looked like a good help and a handy book for collage students to answer the exercises and practice. The tables were well organized and clear.

Family, Economy, and Covenant Theology.......1999-05-16

The Greek word "oikos," from which the word "economy" is derived, originally referred to the economy of the household. This premodern conception of the relationship between the household and the economy was "home economics" in the truest sense. In this book, one of a number of excellent titles from the Religion, Culture, and Family Project at the University of Chicago Divinity School, Max Stackhouse shows how the economic systems and ideologies that so profoundly influence family life are, in turn, shaped by theology.

The structural changes in our society as it has moved through its hunter-gatherer, agricultural, and industrialized phases have gone hand-in-hand with changes in our economy, ranging from capitalism, to socialism, to postindustrialism, to the new globalism. All of these changes have had a profound impact on the structure, purpose, and well-being of families. Perhaps the most coherent and comprehensive of the theological models that have sought to navigate these changing social, economic, and familial tides is the "covenant theology" that arose within the Calvinist Reformed tradition. That theology places the emphasis on choice and consent that characterizes so much classical and contemporary discourse within a framework of the interrelation of the "created orders" of church, state, and family.

In laying out this theological and economic theory of the family, Stackhouse touches on many of the most pressing issues in the family debate, such as the Protestant debate over homosexuality, the normative structure of sexuality, the impact of materialism and consumerism on the household, the libertarian reduction of individualistic rational-choice economic theory, the division of household labor, the impact of poverty and welfare on families and children, and the idea of covenant marriage and relationship. For those who follow American politics, Stackhouse's book is a particularly provocative integration of the liberal emphasis on economics and the conservative focus on the family. In the end, it is a timely study of the theological basis for our commitments to what Freud identified as the central features of personhood, namely, work and love.

I honestly don't like giving my fellow Vietnam warriors five stars. We've all had so many rose petals and awards placed in our paths throughout the years, I worry about overdoing it. Still, Al Sever gets five from me simply because he's a Vietnam veteran who has somehow given up drugs and killing babies long enough to write a book, a good book. Hell, I flew some 1100 hours in the war and I didn't know that, "It's a lot easier hitting small targets if the AC watches the target through the chin bubble at his feet and gives the command to drop the grenade. Leaning out the door to the left while moving forward makes it difficult to be accurate when you throw the grenade." If I ever get my hands on a helicopter and a buddy to drop the grenade, I'll remember this when we get to Washington. Sever's book, "Xin LOI, Viet Nam" is what I call an energetic, entertaining, and crisply written book. I'm Bob Miller, author of "Kill Me If You Can, You SOB" (hint).

Al Sever is a unique individual. In his book, he credits me by name for training him as a crewchief. He writes as if my training intensity was somehow special or above the call of duty. I didn't think of it that way. I thought of it as doing what I could to survive, and to help my brothers survive. It was frankly comforting to me to know that the crewchief in the gunship behind me knew what he was doing when he covered our tail. And he did. The only thing that he did wrong was to volunteer for a second tour in Viet Nam. And that brings me to his uniqueness. Al survived his second tour both physically and for the most part, psychologically. Most of the men who re-upped for a second tour didn't get back in one piece. I'm glad he did because he wrote a helluva book with an incredible memory for details. I honor him for his service and for his insights into the politics and sadness of that war.

Every detail is true for the period we served together in '68 and '69 flying out of Cu Chi.

Xin Loi, Viet Nam is loaded with ironies and the title carries the most. Read the book.

Xin Loi, Vietnam is a realistic view of the War. .......2007-05-12

Having served 12 months as a door gunner in 1965-1966 with the 1st Cav Div, I know a little bit about being a door gunner. This book is very realistic in what it portrays. I am amazed at the author's memory. His discriptions of everyday events are remarkably true to life. I highly recommend this book for the Veteran or anyone who wants to know how it feels to be a Veteran.

Anyone who fought in Vietnam will love this book, anyone who didn't (which has to be the vast majority of us alive today) NEEDS to read this first hand account of a soldier's day to day life in country.

Speaking of a childhood friend who lost his legs after only eight days there, Sever writes of those sent home early, "Their war was finished quickly and while their bodies were torn, their souls had not been scarred. They had missed the day after day mind numbing fear and brutality of guerrilla warfare that worked as a dull rasp to slowly wear away frivilous civilian emotions and fraudulent morals until nothing was left but harsh truth....Only new guys wondered why so many guys smiled during a firefight."

For those of us who have experienced conflict with an opposing force. You know how hard it is to relate that experience to someone who wasn't there. So, you just keep your past to yourself. After all it was a long time ago, and no one really cares anyway.
Besides, most of the best war stories have already been told by people who weren't even there. They all seem to remember the gorey details of ambushes and attacks, and they all will admit to being scared, and how they survived by the grace of god and a fighting spirit they didn't know they possessed. These heroes can still smell the odor of burning flesh and remember with graphic detail the missing body parts of their best friends. What they can not ever seem to remember; was the unit they were assigned to, or the fire support base they lived in, let alone what Corps area they were fighting in.

Al Severs book Xin Loi, Viet Nam gives all those "wanna bees" a true and graphic experience of what it was really like in a real unit, with real people, at real places during his tours in Viet Nam.
And for all the real people out there who want to read how somebody else did the same things you did. You'll find this book very moving as you will identify with every page in the book. The author didn't invent the tactics but he relays them through words in a clear and familiar way that you will identify with and remember.
If you weren't there, then this is the last book you will ever have to read about relationships, thoughts and feelings from somebody who has experienced daily combat for much longer than he had to, but not long enough to quell the pure excitement of yearning for one more mission with a team that did not understand the meaning of quit.

Al Severs style is exceedingly easy to read. His style is personal and directly from his heart. While the subject matter is sad, the writing is so good as to qualify as "art", and art is always humane.

Xin Loi touches your heart whether you know nothing of the experience or whether you were there with him.

Well done, gripping, funny and shocking by turns, and hard to put down. A book not to miss if you want to know what it was like in the Vietnam War from a few hundred feet up.
