This is a big "coffee table" type book, filled with luscious photos of exotic locations and peoples, tons of old maps and history, and did I mention the glorious photos? Anyone who loves the South Pacific and its peoples will want this book. A great gift for world travelers, too.

Some nice picture - needs an editor.......2002-03-04

The sub-title "Myths and Wonders . . " is a misnomer. Unless you count the author's apparent fascination with celebrities, I did not find many myths. Any island that has movie stars as frequent visitors, or has actually had a film made there is, by default, high in the author's estimation.

The production quality of the book far exceeds the content. The photos are brilliantly reproduced, with deep blues and greens of the ocean, and nice aerials of many islands. The content of the photos, however, is very inconsistent from region to region. Some geographic areas have a nice mix of landscape and cultural shots, while others are only a series of aerial prints (nice but not sufficient.) In the "Tonga" section, we read of an interesting royal burial ground consisting of numerous pyramids, but only see a dozen photos of the island from a distance.

The editing and translation can be blamed for the frustration in reading the book. One of the more annoying layout aspects it's the placement of the photo captions. No effort seems to have been made to place them near the pictures they describe. The captions are also written in an inconsistent mix of broken sentences, quotes from the text and irrelevant facts - in many cases not even describing the photo's content.

There are several errors in distances and heights of mountains, which can be ascribed to conversion during the translation process; mountains are described as "5,456 feet (1,723 feet)" in height.

There are references to "mass" for individuals attending a protestant church service. In describing the "Bounty" mutineers' arrival on Pitcairn Island, the ship is said to have wandered the seas for "years" while the dates given only cover a few months.

So, in summary, the book is not what it claims to be, though it does have pretty pictures.

I was given this book as a gift and it is a wonderful book, both for its amazing photography and narrative. I highly recommend it!

The book is just a collection of very short stories written by Jack Jefford describing many of his adventures in Alaska. He lived a life very few of us could imagine, and it is mildly entertaining, but it comes across a bit too quaint. Only a die hard pilot and reader can enjoy this book, even though it is a very quick and easy read.

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER ride behind a semi. You are behind eight retreads. If one of them shreds your trip is over. The hailstorm of rubber and wire that hits you in the face will be the end of it. I have crossed country both ways from California to Key West, from San Diego to Yellowstone, Montana. I almost got it from a semi tread less than fifty miles from home in Ohio.

I found this book easy & extremely enjoyable to read. Being owners of a Goldwing, my wife & I are planning a similar trip. This book has help me, through very detailed descriptions of route and sights,to get a better idea of the path we would like to take. A quick, easy, dreambuilding travelogue.......1998-11-07

I found Gary's book an easy read. Although I've never ridden a big bike, I have traveled around the country in an open Jeep and could relate to his concerns about the weather, traffic, vehicle reliability and the like. His book got me to dreaming and planning my own "Grand Adventure"!

this book is one of the best books i've ever read (and i've read a lot of books!!!) i loved it so much i went and brought the rest of the series!!!!!!! i love it and re-read it often!!!! i am 13 and the reccommened age is 9-12 but i reeckon that is all wrong i think that this book is suitable for anyone who can relate to it and i can!!!!!! so well done Annie Dalton and please write some more!!!!!!!!!!!!

She's got Wings!.......2003-04-19

This is the first in collection of books about a young girl who finds herself at an Angel Academy after she dies in accident not long after her 12th birthday. Beeing a trainee Angel isn't what Mel Beeby expected from life...er death that is. She still misses her mother and younger sister and she isn't sure at first if she's cut out for the duties of an Angel, duties which include Time Travel and helping people when they need it most back on earth. Also being an Angel can be dangerous work, there are the "others" the [bad] ones who try to thwart the work of the Angels and there are other distractions too in the guise of good looking boy Angels who go by the name of Orlando.

This is a great book for a pre-teen or early teen reader. I wouldn't be surprised if this book and its equally good sequels were eventually made into a TV series. A quality fun read for all those kids who like a fantasy read that sparkles from page to page.

An important, compelling, and well written testimony.......2001-02-10

This is an important, interesting, compelling, and well written testimony by Mr.Mielnicki. It is the kind of work that will take one beyond the well known general statistics and facts of the holocaust, and also into the realm of the heart. In particular it is highly informative regarding events in the Bialystok Region, from which hundreds of thousands of Jewish people were murdered. I read it in one sitting, and paused only when in it's pages I unexpectedly found Mr. Mielnicki's first hand account of the destruction of my families town of Zabludow Poland on June 26th, 1941. I highly recommend this book. In fact,it is a book that in an ideal world would be read by everyone. It contains a very good introduction by Sir Martin Gilbert, and is well illustrated with maps, and interesting and well chosen photos. This is a book to own
