Travel in Croatia.......2005-02-05

Nice little travel book, paperback with plastic (or vinyl) cover. It's small size (96 pages) made it easy to pack and take along on our trip. There are lots of maps and beautiful color pictures. Similar in presentation to other well known travel books with numbered destinations on the maps and corresponding numbered explanations in text. I found it most helpful.

Abby Maria Hemenway's life and work offer a unique portrait of a 19th-century literary woman. Hemenway is chiefly remembered as the editor of the Vermont Historical Gazetteer, a five-volume compendium of the state's local history published between 1860 and 1892, a monumental work that is still in constant use today by historians and genealogists. Hemenway never married, and at the age of 36 she formally converted and entered the Catholic Church, which anchored her life for the bulk of her professional career.

For 30 years, Hemenway managed her own publishing empire, engaging hundreds of people to write for her and countless others to help in various ways. No one else in the US attempted to do what Hemenway did: to collect and publish single-handedly the history of every town in her state. And she accomplished this feat in spite of obstacles posed by her status as a single woman, and a devout Catholic, not simply in post-Civil War New England, but also in a field of endeavor overwhelmingly dominated by elite Protestant men. Frequently told that "history is not suitable work for a woman," she persevered and eventually triumphed, though not without considerable adversity.

Hemenway's life is a wonderful and gripping story of survival and accomplishment, struggle and betrayal, driven by her passion for storytelling, oral history, spiritual experience, and the sacredness of everyday life. Hers is an epic life principally because she viewed her work of preserving Vermont's history as a holy cause, worth fighting for at all costs. She endured floods and conflagrations, chronic indebtedness and lawsuits, yet she never let any of these difficulties hinder her work. To this day, our knowledge of Vermont history, and the light it sheds on community life in the early republic, owes a great debt to Hemenway and her Gazetteer.

Deborah P. Clifford, author of two previously published biographies, is herself a gifted storyteller. She skillfully narrates Hemenway's life story with verve and insight.

Pretty useless.......2006-11-03

I am using this textbook in a 200 level college American history class. I am so dissapointed the professor didn't require a better book for us. It barely grazes over key important points in history. I find myself constantly on the internet trying to get more information to write my papers. It seems like it's written for high school level readers, but I wouldn't recommend it even for that. It's impossible to get a good understanding of what went on for any given topic. Also, it is very hard to reference information. Each chapter has timelines in the front which are helpful, and there is a website for quizes and such. In addition, the authors frequently make references to "people" when they simply mean "rich white males". Isn't it enough that our forefathers thought this way - the writers of history books in 2006 have to continue this tradition?? If only Howard Zinn or L. Loewen had written complete history books that can be used in the classroom. They write wonderful books exposing the lies and ommissions of standard history books, but they cannot in themselves be used in the classroom I believe.

This book by Malcolm Brown is thoroughly researched and contains the most important of Lawrence's writings, aside from Seven Pillars. As Malcolm Brown is a well-known expert on TE Lawrence and on World War I, no other books on Lawrence's writings are as well selected for historical importance or for their revelation of Lawrence's military and literary genius. M. Brown himself has a special genius for understanding and communicating to us the importance of history in the most exciting writing style.

Clotel would have historic interest simply by virtue of the fact that William Wells Brown appears to have been the first African American to write a novel. But it's not merely a literary curiosity; it is also an eminently readable and emotionally powerful, if forgivably melodramatic, portrait of the dehumanizing horrors of slave life in the Ante-bellum South. Brown, himself an escaped slave, tells the story of the slave Currer and her daughters, Clotel and Althesa, and of their attempts to escape from slavery. The central conceit of the story is that the unacknowledged father of the girls is Thomas Jefferson himself.

There is an immediacy to the stories here--of slave auctions, of families being torn apart, of card games where humans are wagered and lost, of sickly slaves being purchased for the express purpose of resale for medical experimentation upon their imminent deaths, of suicides and of many more indignities and brutalities--which no textbook can adequately convey. Though the characters tend too much to the archetypal, Brown does put a human face on this most repellent of American tragedies. He also makes extensive use (so extensive that he has been accused, it seems unfairly, of plagiarism) of actual sermons, lectures, political pamphlets, newspaper advertisements, and the like, to give the book something of a docudrama effect.

The Bedford Cultural Edition of the book, edited by Robert S. Levine, has extensive footnotes and a number of helpful essays on Brown and on the sources, even reproducing some of them verbatim. Overall, it gives the novel the kind of serious presentation and treatment which it deserves, but for obvious reasons has not received in the past. Brown's style is naturally a little bit dated and his passions are too distant for us to feel them immediately, but as you read the horrifying scenes of blacks being treated like chattel, you quickly come to share his moral outrage at this most shameful chapter in our history.

The autobiographies of former slaves contributed powerfully to the abolitionist movement in the United States, fanning national--even international--indignation against the evils of slavery. The four texts gathered here are all from North Carolina slaves and are among the most memorable and influential slave narratives published in the nineteenth century. The writings of Moses Roper (1838), Lunsford Lane (1842), Moses Grandy (1843), and the Reverend Thomas H. Jones (1854) provide a moving testament to the struggles of enslaved people to affirm their human dignity and ultimately seize their liberty.

Introductions to each narrative provide biographical and historical information as well as explanatory notes. Andrews's general introduction to the collection reveals that these narratives not only helped energize the abolitionist movement but also laid the groundwork for an African American literary tradition that inspired such novelists as Toni Morrison and Charles Johnson.

"In 1944, I was aware of three youth groups committed to the compelling idea of an independent Jewish state: Hashomer Hatza'ir (The Young Guard), Young Judaea, and Habonim (The Builders).

Hashomer Hatza'ir was resolutely Marxist. According to intriguing reports I had heard, it was the custom, on their kibbutzim already established in Palestine, for boys and girls under the age of eighteen to shower together. Hashomer Hatza'ir members in Montreal included a boy I shall call Shloime Schneiderman, a high-school classmate of mine. In 1944, when we were still in eighth grade, Schloime enjoyed a brief celebrity after his photo appeared on the front page of the Montreal Herald. Following a two-cent rise in the price of chocolate bars, he had been a leader in a demonstration, holding high a placard that read: down with the 7cents chocolate bar. Hashomer Hatza'ir members wore uniforms at their meetings: blue shirts and neckerchiefs. "They had real court martials," wrote Marion Magid in a memoir about her days in Habonim in the Bronx in the early fifties, "group analysis, the girls were not allowed to wear lipstick." Whereas, in my experience, the sweetly scented girls who belonged to Young Judaea favored pearls and cashmere twinsets. They lived on leafy streets in the suburb of Outremont, in detached cottages that had heated towel racks, basement playrooms, and a plaque hanging on the wall behind the wet bar testifying to the number of trees their parents had paid to have planted in Eretz Yisrael, the land of Israel.

I joined Habonim -- the youth group of a Zionist political party, rooted in socialist doctrine -- shortly after my bar mitzvah, during my first year at Baron Byng High School. I had been recruited by a Room 41 classmate whom I shall call Jerry Greenfeld..."

A journal by the every-day Richler.......2005-11-09

As an Arab and a former Montréaler with an interest in the Middle East, I was looking forward to reading this book. Besides the joy of reading about the city's past I found interesting how Diaspora Jewish communities dealt with their place as Jews in Western societies and with Zionism since and before the establishment of Israel.

It was fascinating to see how closely-knit (or self-obsessed?) Jewish communities were. Through his childhood, Richler only seems to interact with Jews (as do other members of his community), only getting access to the real world when he leaves Montreal and his conservative community. Having been raised there, Richler had spoken better Hebrew than French.

Richler also reveals, as he discovers himself, that Zionism is not as rosy as it is perceived. Much of the Zionist 'training' Jews received is implied to be a sort of brain-washing, promoting the idea of Palestine as a 'land without people for a people without land'. The strong Zionist solidarity among children, as well as patriotism for a land they had never seen, could not have come without it.

His critical attitude towards Zionism and recognition of what he sees as the need for Jews to have a place to call home comes together to make a good read. This book is not overly political or disturbingly ideological. It's just Richler in an average person's shoes.
