A reward book for gardeners.......2003-09-07

Reward yourself for gardening. Most of the gardeners I know love to get their hands in the dirt and work at whatever it takes to make their garden beautiful. But there comes a time to sit back, either alone or with friends and family, and just enjoy what you have created. This book gives you plans for twenty shady retreats where you can sit back, relax and just enjoy.

Each of the 20 retreats is shown in a painting by Gary Palmer (the idea of a painting rather than a photograph is a novel approach and it worked well with this topic) and a detailed design layout is provided too. I would have found it helpful if more construction details were included, but this is an idea book rather than a how-to book.

The strength of this book lies in the recurring themes such "Colour in the Shade" and "Ideas for Great Design" that enrich each of the major designs. There are also ideas of plants to selct for each and a goodly list of favourite shade plants at the end of the book.

The illustrations throughout the book are right on target with the theme and illustrate ways to incorporate your own requirements - peace? an active area? a working space? entertaining? - into a design for a shady retreat.

Muhammad Amin al-Husayni, the principal leader of Palestinian nationalism during the British mandate, was one of the modern Arab world's most controversial figures. He played a role in the 1992 Wailing Wall disturbance, took part in the Iraqi revolt of 1941, and was the target of British and Zionist assasins during World War II. Philip Mattar now offers the first full-length biography of this intriguing figure, weaving a fresh and objective revisionist account.

Mattar clarifies al-Husayni's role in the politics of Palestine in the mandate era and the Palestinian national movement. He describes his rise to religious power as Mufti of Jerusalem and head of the Supreme Muslim Council. He also demarcates two major phases in al-Husayni's career. During his first, between 1917 and 1936, he was a cautious and pragmatic leader who, while opposing Zionism, cooperated with the British mandatory officials. The second phase, however, after 1936, was marked by militancy, frustration, and ultimately failure.

This booklet was written to outline el-Husseini's involvement in facist, anti-Jewish, anti-democratic, and anti-allied causes and activities from c. 1929 until his disappearance from France in 1946. It is an exact reprint from the orginal publication-- before computers, and put together (including the typesetting, apparently) by the author himself.

Much of the material concerning el-Husseini was still classified and not released at the time. One of the most enlightening and horrifying connections to come to light through this book is that el-Husseini and Eichmann were very close, and apparently el-Husseini was the reason the extermination of European Jews was accelerated up to May, 1945.

As the "grandfather" of the PLO, now morphed into the PA, this man is the reason there are no Arab moderates, and why the call for extermination of Jews continues.

Multiple spelling errors and poorly organized review.......2006-09-06

This book provides interesting information but is plagued throughout by mispellings and organizational issues. As such it does not read as a biography per se. Its most useful feature are the full text of letters and speeches. The photos are of limited quality. This book would be an extremely worthwhile reference if it were re-written to improve the organization and quality of the content. Having said that, readers interested in this individual have very few alternatives and the information discussed is important.
