Useless unless you're a historian..........1999-06-19

I worked in Turkmenistan for two years organizing seminars and training programs, sponsored by the US government, for Turkmen government officials on areas related to business law and the development of an attractive investment climate.

Needless to say, the reality of Turkmenistan is that any book or publication on any law, but especially business law, is potentially outdated before it even hits the printer. I came across this particular publication, "Turkmenistan Business Law Handbook", while I was there. Aside from being the only English language publication on Turkmen business law, the translation was very poor and had already been superceded by numerous presidential decrees and specially negotiated concessions to foreign investors in preferred sectors. In short, what's the point of having a book of "laws" that may or may not be current or translated properly (the official Turkmen language version takes precedence)?

Spurb Guide from Sunflower Landscapes.......2003-01-11

Jonnie Godfrey and Elizabeth Karslake's superb guides to Crete, eastern and western, are my first introductions to the Sunflower Landscapes guides. On the basis of these two guides, I would not hesitate to purchase any of the other Sunflower Landscapes guides to other travel destinations.

My wife's sister married a Greek; they live in Iraklion, and my wife and I have spent more than eight weeks together (so far) on Crete at various times, travelling with them or on our own. I have done several of the hikes described in the guide for Western Crete, and I can attest to the accuracy and usefulness of the trail descriptions. The descriptions include frank and accurate assessments of ease or difficulty and, most usefully, sections where those who are vertigo-prone may experience difficulties (my wife has this problem; I had to talk her through the tricky section on the Loutro-Sfakia trail which is flagged in the guide and of which there is no mention in Loraine Wilson's guide). The blurb on the back cover says the books cover "walks for all ages and abilities," and this is absolutely true. Best of all, at the back of each book is a fairly detailed foldout road map of Crete on which are indicated all the walks, car tours, and picnic sites covered in the book, making it quick and easy to locate an outing described in the text, or to check out what is recommended for a particular location which one might be visiting. These two little books contain much more detailed and practical information for the car tourist and hiker than you will find in any other guides to Crete that I've seen. Very well laid out, easy to use, and excellent value for money.

Stay AWAY!.......2000-01-25

This book is a looseleaf collection that does not teach anything at all about proofreading. I had hoped to see some pages of marked text. Nothing! The papers have an abundance of errors for you to proofread for yourself, but not a word about how to do it. The collection was designed for use with an instructor who would tell you what to do, leaving you to practice on the sheets that comprise the book. The material is for test purposes only; there is no instruction. I urge the writer to issue a new addition with the ANSWERS, i.e., with the same sheets MARKED, rather than left for the reader to mark.

A good book for beginners has great photographs.......2007-07-08

This is a good book for beginners. It is really an overview. The information is well organized with a table of contents and index so the reader can find the answer to most queries. This book is similar to How To Be a Jewelry Detective although, Secrets has better photography and higher production values. The title promises Secrets and How to Buy More For Less. I am not sure that these claims can be supported.

There is good section on findings. For example, did I buy a fur clip or a dress clip? Secrets to Collecting Jewelry includes clear photos of findings so the curious reader can discover the difference. Another question that pops up monthly on one of the online jewelry forums I belong to is answered here with more clear photos, "What are those quirky ear findings, they can't possibly be for pierced ears!?!". Yes, there is a photo of those quirky wing back ear findings.

There is a section is called Examples of Specific Types of Jewelry, Materials and Styles or what I would call an illustrated glossary. It is thorough from applejuice bakelite to watch pin. There are some really interesting and unique inclusions such as Prison Rings, Book Chains, Kum-a-Part cufflinks, Negligee Necklaces and more. But some inclusions are silly such as a photo of leather and satin and suede cord! Not really necessary even for a rank beginner.

Secrets to Collecting Jewelry has a notable section on Bakelite and Plastic Jewelry the photography is compelling and the pieces selected are lovely.

Textbook perfect.......2005-10-13

This book is THE textbook you would use if you took a course in collecting vintage jewelry. Leigh gives a definition and then shows you exactly what she is talking about, and she has made this learning interesting and easy. It is great for novice collectors, but even better for brand new collectors.

What a fabulously comprehensive book. Perfect size to carry with you too! Being somewhat of a beginner in the true "collection" of vintage jewelry, I have of course been burned. I am forever learning and have found this book so helpful. I learned about pieces I currently have that I didn't know the names or era of and found on my first thumbing! I have all of this authors' books. I think she is so great with information. So many of the vintage jewelery books have pretty pictures and prices but no information. This is definitely an instructional book as well as a source for beautiful photographs of vintage jewelry. Write More Soon!

This is a very well written book with great photos. Easy reading detailed information on specific gems mixed in with interesting tales of travel to exotic lands. Made me realize my thoughts of international jem trading had better be prepared with years of experience. For thousands of years neophytes have been seperated from their money by professional,usually generational traders. This book saved me alot of money just by convincing me to continue as a hobbyist, albeit a better educated one now. If you are interested in colored stones, I highly recommend "Secrets Of The Gem Trade"

I was absolutely smitten by the beauty of the projects in this book. While I have done some beading in the past I have not tackled flowers so I jumped in. Unfortunately, I soon found out that the instructions are not well written. If you can read you should be able to make anything described. There are many steps left out. What a waste. I would not recommend this book for the beginner to learn from.

Ooooooooooooooooh, I *LOVE* this book. The photos are gorgeous; each time I see them, I feel greatly inspired. The directions are clear. Although I still consider Virginia Nathanson's and Virginia Osterland's beaded flower books the best ever written,
this book contains numerous clear diagrams -- as well as innumerable gorgeous, diversified projects. I highly recommend it.

Although this book has beautiful photos of each finished project, it does not include step-by-step illustrations, relying almost entirely on verbal directions. This book is great for people who are already familiar with bead/wire techniques and can translate mental pictures from the directions. It is less beneficial for those who are new to the subject.

Okay, but definitely not the best on the market.......2001-06-17

I love beading, so ordered this book with rush shipping because I couldn't wait for it to arrive. Unfortunately, however, I was very disappointed. It has some lovely pictures, ideas, and directions, but lacks the "specialness" of similar books by people who truly love to bead. (Since the author has written books on a variety of subjects, I suspect that this is more of a passing interest to her than to the others. That's okay, and it is still a beautiful book -- just not on a par with books by people who truly love beading.)

For one thing, I would have liked a good Resource section. Although *I* know where to order beads by mail or online, I'm sure that there are many others who can't buy them locally, and would have liked to know this.

The beginning mentions different types of beads, including silver-lined -- but does NOT add that the linings disappear after a period of time, thereby ruining your design. It also fails to even mention the importance of facets, and difference between faceted glass and plain acrylic. Although the latter is often a financial necessity, I feel that the distinction should have been made clear just in case it makes a difference to someone.

I also would have liked the authors recommendations for the best beads for specific projects ... e.g., 4-cut, rounded, or whatever. Although options could (and should) have been provided should the "best" prove unavailable or prohibitively expensive, this would have been nice to know in case someone wanted to make the "best", and needed help determining which beads would help achieve that result.

It also might have mentioned bead spinners -- the dramatic difference in quality between the plastic and the wood, how unbelievably helpful the latter are in stringing loose beads onto wire, and where to buy the good ones.

Don't get me wrong -- it is a lovely book, and others may be extremely pleased with it. However, I, myself, would have liked a lot more help locating the best beads, information about bead spinners and where to buy hanks of strung beads if no bead spinner is available, the different cuts available, which type bead is best for each project (e.g., 4-cut or smooth), etc.

The Sinusitis Help Book changed and saved my life........2000-09-25

For a number of years, I frantically searched for any information I thought I could find on sinuses. I was, unfortunately the kind of patient who had undergone numerous surgeries and evaluations to no avail. I was a more serious case and felt that I would eventually die if help were not found soon. I was racked with fever, pain, and pressure. I had exhausted myself visiting every Ear Nose and Throat doctor within a two hundred mile radius of my home. Despite my insistance that these problems had become serious, most doctors disregarded my problems as being insignificant. The Sinusitis Help Book gave me every piece of important information I needed to validate my condition for myself, and to continue forward in my pursuit of a doctor who would listen. Next this book gave me the proper questions to ask that would eventually save my life. My condition as it turned out was a rather serious infected cyst. Doctor M. Lee Williams answered questions that no doctor had been able to answer. I was amazed at his passion in his feild. Most doctors had given me few answers or options. This man made me realize that there are many, many conditions of the sinuses, many symptoms to suggest this, and many treatment options. I am not embellishing one bit when I say that I would be dead had I not read this book. My condition was crescendoeing just as I was to find the proper questions to ask. Doctor Williams is a genius, noting in his book certain symptoms that most doctors have never heard of. It was a tremendous help to me . I am now nearly well and I have doctor Williams to thank for that. I really believe that every Otolaryngologist in this country who is learning or practicing should consider reading this significant and comprehensive bible of sinusitis. The temptation to tell people what's really wrong with them is almost irrisistable once you've read this book. You recognize all the symptoms; are pretty sure you know some of the treatments. During the Holocaust, thousands of Jews from Germany, Austria, Czechoslovakia, and later Hungary were transported to Latvia, where they were concentrated in the Riga Ghetto and in extermination camps--joining the thousands of Latvian Jews who were already interned there. Only a few hundred survived. Gertrude Schneider, herself a survivor of the death camps, traveled Eastern Europe, Israel, and the United States to collect statements of other survivors as well as documentary evidence on the lives of the inmates, guards, and others who witnessed the Latvian Holocaust. Collected in The Unfinished Road are the remembrances of survivors. Each personal account is combined with a note on the individual's subsequent life. The volume concludes with a general bibliography and index. To begin to understand the Holocaust, one must somehow personalize the numbing statistics of the millions who were transported, concentrated, and killed.
