Fascinating Fire in the Sea.......2005-07-21

"Fire in the Sea: The Santorini Volcano: Natural History and the Legend of Atlantis" by Walter L. Friedrich is a uniquely fascinating scholarly natural history of the Greek island of Santorini, yet amazingly easy to read for a volume with such a wealth of geologic and natural history, as well as a thoughtful inclusion of Plato's writings on Atlantis. The author seems intent on making the secrets of the Santorini volcano and the catastrophic explosion which destroyed the island and made an impact on the Aegean area easily understandable to the average reader, even while discussing geologic formations and the nature of volcanoes. The many photos are quite helpful in understanding the island and its geologic makeup; it was truly
hard to put the book down and I was a little sad when I finished reading, as it had been such a joy to read. I highly recommend this book to amateur rock hounds, vulcanologists, and anyone interested in Santorini.

Clarification: Mount St. Helens erupted in 1980........2002-09-30

The first customer review's comment on Mount St. Helens requires a correction. Mount St. Helens erupted in May 1980, well before this book was written.

Ash particles from this 1980 eruption in Washington State's Cascade Mountains were thrown high enough to be caught up in the jet stream and deposited in a fine-grained plume that extended all the way around the world. This prompted publication of tongue-in-cheek picture postcards that proclaimed, "Don't come to Washington: Washington will come to you!"

But since the book was originally published in Germany, the authors may be forgiven for expecting comparisons with Stromboli and Vesuvius to have more interest for their target audience. An Indonesian author of a similar book might well have focused on comparisons with Krakatoa.

An approachable discourse on the subject.......2002-08-02

It was truly an exciting experience which found me capering about loose scoria ridges looming over the still fuming caldera several feet about the beach; I felt quite daring, especially as I am extremely afraid of heights! I learned a lot that I had missed by dropping out of my degree program prior to going on my summer field camp. There were examples of debris flows, unconformities, erosional channels, wind formations, faulting, uplift of sea bed strata with fossiliferous deposits, all an education in themselves. I also learned that hours on end in the hot sun plotting individual grains of rock for size, shape, color, angularity, and inclination is not my cup of tea. It makes a great summer vacation for the enthusiastic amateur, but I couldn't imagine it as a permanent, full time job. I decided I had missed nothing by remaining a nurse, and looked forward to a publication of results that I could enjoy in the quiet of my own home!

Just such a report has since be published (2000). I had the great good fortune to discover Walter L. Friedrich's volume Fire in the Sea while browsing the various Amazon links from another book on geology. Although it's not an in depth geological or archaeological survey of the research on the island, it is an excellent compendium for the page length of what is known about it with respect to these two topics. Above all it is an approachable discourse on the tectonic history of Santorini, both ancient and modern. There are wonderful photos of the various vistas around the island-many of which I recognized from my own visit there--and several maps that show the development of the site through time. Reports of volcanism and earthquake activity through the ages are included from earlier authors that give an almost biographical character to the story of Santorini or ancient Thera, and there are several illustrations of Minoan art work that help recreate the character of the island prior to the eruption for which the volcano is most noted and often cited, that during Minoan times ca. 1700 BC. At the end of the book in Appendix 1, the author has included one of Plato's Dialogs discussing the ancient tale of Atlantis with which the island has been linked by a number of researchers.

I found the book to be an excellent discourse on the geology of the island but was a little disappointed in that there was so little about the archaeological site of Akrotiri, especially as geologists-including Dr. Floyd McCoy, with whom I worked and who is mentioned in the volume-have been very helpful in illuminating some of the events of the city's last moments. The excavation site is fascinating, as the structures are preserved in places up to second stories. The faulted stair case (p. 70) is included and is one of the most emotive sights in the devestated city, but a more thorough discussion of the site and what is believed to have occurred there during the eruption that ended its life is a very stirring tale, one that could have lent a greater sense of the moment to the reader. It would also illustrate how the activities of archaeology and geology are integrated to generate productive results. Although the author discusses in brief some of the concerns of the modern inhabitants of the island, I would also have enjoyed more photos of the modern towns in the area, since I suspect they are very like those that have existed on the island since antiquity. A discussion of their own history and likely future would have added a sense of continuity to the tale of Santorini

An outstanding, informative account for geology students........2000-09-05

This in-depth survey of the Santorini volcano's natural history and its connections to the Atlantis legend will hold special appeal for students of volcanism and geology: Fire in the Sea is packed with color photos of the volcano, relics, excavations, and maps; and it includes in-depth discussions of volcanism in general. An outstanding, involving account for the dedicated student of geology.

A Bronze Age Blast.......2000-08-22

This is a lucid and informative book for both ancient history buffs and those interested in volcanos. The book discusses the Santorini volcano system is detail, and outlines the history of eruptions from the remote past to the present day. The greatest emphasis is on the eruption of 1640 B.C., one of the most violent volcanic explosions of all time.

The text, maps and drawings are excellent, and the author presents not only what we know about the Santorini volcano, but how the scientific conclusions evolved and what the evidence is behind them. The book was published in Germany in 1994, which means that the eruption of Mt. St. Helens had not yet occurred when the book was written. Too bad -- that would have been an excellent example for the author to compare to Santorini.

Ferdinand FouquÃ©'s study of the Santorini archipelago in the Aegean Sea was first published in French in 1879. It quickly became known as a valued resource, not only on Santorini but also on volcanoes, their characteristics, and the remarkable archaeological artifacts that FouquÃ© discovered under the volcanic rock of Santorini's most famous eruption. In short, the work proved invaluable to geologists and archaeologists alike.

For geologists, FouquÃ©'s detailed analysis of the volcano provided the first well-documented evidence that large volcanic depressions, such as the one forming the bay of Santorini, are the result of wholesale collapse following voluminous eruptions of ash and pumice. In the field of archaeology, FouquÃ© discovered the buried city of Akrotiri and began the excavations that showed the first evidence of an advanced bronze-age civilization in the Aegean. (Like Pompeii, Akrotiri was buried by a major volcanic eruption which, according to one popular theory, was also responsible for the sudden demise of the Minoan civilization on Crete.) He was the first to use the petrographic microscope to study the sources of clay used in ancient ceramics and discovered the nature of "Egyptian blue"pigment.

FouquÃ©'s studies laid the foundation for much of the intense research carried out on the island today, but because the book is exceedingly rare--more often cited than read--his remarkable observations and insights have gone largely unnoticed.

Now noted volcanologist Alexander R. McBirney provides the first annotated English translation of the original French text of 1879. Most of the original work's illustrations are included, among them a fourteen-page color insert, and a large, full-color geological map of the Santorini islands. Also included are a brief biography of FouqÃ© and a summary of more recent geological and archaeological studies at Santorini.

Minor errors introduced by editors.......2000-06-10

Although the book is said to have been printed from camera-ready copy that I supplied, the copy editor took it upon himself to alter the text without having the courtesy of consulting me. In so doing, the paragraphing of the opening chapter was altered from that of Fouque's original text, and several errors were introduced into my annotations. It is regrettable to see these defects in a book to which I devoted eight years of conscientious effort. Apart from this, I hope that the book does credit to Fouque and his long-neglected contributions to geology and archeology.

A classic work available at last.......2000-01-01

In 1866-1870, Georgios volcano on Santorini had a series of eruptions that attracted many visitors and scientists. Several eye-witness accounts of the spectacular events were written, but two of them were outstanding, one by Jules Verne and another by Ferdinand Fouque. While Verne described in his science fiction novel how Captain Nemo and his crew witnessed the spectacular eruptions in the middle of Santorini caldera, Fouque wrote a scientific book entitled "Santorini et ses eruptions". Both books became famous. While Verne's book turned out to be a best seller and was translated into many languages, Fouque's book was never such a success because only 800 copies were printed and the many illustrations made it expensive. As a result, many geologists and archeologists have cited the book, but only a few have read the text. Now after more than 120 years this classic has been translated into English. The translator, a leading scientist in volcanology himself, Alexander McBirney of the University of Oregon, has given us a readable text that preserves the style and spirit of the original. His annotations inform the reader about later work and things that have changed since 1879. He has also added a short biographical sketch of Fouque, a doctor of medicine who became interested in volcanoes and was a pioneer in many fields, including the analysis of volcanic minerals and gases. McBirney brings the reader an update on the geological development of Snatorini since the appearance of the original French text. The book comes with the modern geological map of Santorini by Pichler and Kussmaul. Altogether, the combination of Fouque's science, the translator's scholarship, and the publisher's craftsmanship make this one of the best books about volcanoes and the archeology of Santorini ever written.

Excellent Biography of a Major Civil War Figure.......2006-03-07

In my humble opinion, Emory Thomas has written what I believe to be the definitive account of one of the 3 most effective calvary generals (Sheridan and Forrest being the other 2) during the Civil War. The writing style flows smoothly throughout the text as the writer goes from one subject to another in JEB Stuart's life.

Among the areas covered include:

1. Stuart's early life and West Point days.
2. His early US Army service before the Civil War.
3. His family life.
4. His Civil War relationships with various generals (Lee, Longstreet, Jackson, etc.) and subordinates (Jones, Rosser, Munford, etc.).
5. Civil War campaigns and ultimate death from a wound suffered at Yellow Tavern, VA in May 1864.
6. His evangelical faith.
7. Stuart's personal strengths and weaknesses.

I appreciated Thomas' ability to respect his subject while also describing his personal weaknesses (extreme vanity and concern with what others thought of him, excessive self-promotion, too much of a flirt with the ladies.). Doing so helped to show Stuart as a mere human being instead of the facade he attempted to portray.

The only complaint I had was not having enough maps showing Stuart's involvement in the many campaigns of the Army of Northern Virginia. The maps in the book were of good quality but there could have been a few more.

All in all, I recommend the book as the best account of JEB Stuart. Read and enjoy!

College Days!.......2005-04-06

I had forgotten I still had this book on my shelf! I used it early in my college years (1991)to write a Cival War Cavalry paper for an English class. I got a B on the paper, but I had so much fun writing it. This book and others were a big help. Thomas uses actual letters, diaries and news stories to tell the story of J.E.B. Stuart. Terrific book and I highly recomend it to anyone who is into Civil War or general American history!

Beauty and the Civil War.......2003-09-06

Bold Dragoon is the story of the life of J.E.B. Stuart, a cavalryman and a cavalier of the old order. From his youth in southwest Virginia to his wounding at Yellow Tavern, his was a life of adventure and a search for recognition.

Called Beauty at West Point, Stuart wore a great beard during the war to cover up what he thought of as a weak chin. However, there was nothing weak about his military exploits. General Lee relied on him and his intelligence throughout the war. So much so, that when he was missing at the beginning of the battle at Gettysburg, blame fell on him and his absence as part of the reason for the battle's beginning before the Army of Virginia could choose the ground. He never again disappointed Lee, whom he first met at the time of John Brown's escapade in Harper's Ferry.

Proud and ostentatious, he revelled in the attentions of women and chastised his wife when she showed jealousy. He loved to dance. Could be refreshed by short naps and wake immediately -- which he was required to do on more than one occasion when caught unawares. And his death in Richmond in 1864 brought a chill to the Confederacy. General Lee said of him: "He never brought me a false piece of information."

Emory Thomas brings this man to life. His research included many primary sources, the writing style is easy, and the story is broad and bold. This is a must for students of the War Between the States and U.S. military history.

Well Wtitten Bio of Beauty who was Beat by the Modern Era.......2002-11-01

A delightful bio of Stuart dealing with his early years, West Point, John Brown's rebellion, his relationship with women and of course the Civil War. Stuart the virtual romantic knight who enjoyed the role and traveled like a characer from Robin Hood with a banjo playing musician and a sect of followers that almost mirrors Custer's post Civil War band and family of followers. Besides Stuart himself, he has a fascinating collection of subordinate such as the Prussian Heroes Von Brocke, Fitz Lee, Rooney Lee, Wade Hampton, Grumble Jones (not his favorite) and Thomas Rosser who was a great friend of Custer's who never got the star he sought. As his legend develops it seems that Stuart became caught up with it particularly by the time of Brandy Station where the day after an elaborate parade showing of his calavry units for Lee he is shocked by aggressive and highly succesful attacks by the transformed union calvary. This may have led to Stuart's desire for a sensational trip around he Union army talking himself out of the picture at the battle of Gettysburg. At the end, Sheridan's forces seem to exhaust Stuart's calvary due to shortages of horses and the addition of repeaters.

Fascinating description of the seeming vain yet outging Stuart sparking a unique friendship with the religious and stern Jackson.

It is often more interesting to read what those who have been there have to say than what we think they said. Thus is the case with this book. It may not have every fact correct, but it is what the author McClellen remembered. As with "Co. Aych" and "All For the Union," their perception of the smaller picture of the War than the overall history that is fascinating.

I Rode with JEB Stuart.......2002-10-28

More than McClellan's memoir, this is an early Stuart biography, and later biographies such as Davies' and Thomas' rely heavily upon it. McClellan became Stuart's AG in May '63, but his account starts with Stuart's youth.

This is a vital account in showing exactly what Stuart's cavalry did during the war: scouting, raiding, screening movements, fighting rearguard actions, gathering information, etc. One thing I didn't know was that Stuart's horse artillery, often under the command of the general himself and sometimes with regular batteries added, would take up a flank position during infantry battles and fire into the Federal ranks. The perpetual, obviously exhausting, activity of the cavalry also becomes obvious.

Great Read.......2007-05-27

This book is great for anyone! A lot of the concepts apply specifically to advertising, but there are great lessons for managers of other industries as well. It's a fast read and a good addition to any collection.

Does Roy H. Williams ( (( Really know )) ) what he's talking about?.......2007-01-29

Prior to reading this first of three books I wondered does Roy H. Williams really know what he's talking about? (I guess when you become a Read-o-holic and you've read more than a few thousand books you began to wonder is this all a game? A game of money for books or what.)

My second thought was has this man compiled some great stories illustrating some pre-used concepts on Marketing? You know something I've heard before. (Because if you're like me you don't need to buy another book that would have been better to convert into firewood or toilet paper).

My third thought was...So what is this magic that Roy means by "The Wizard Of Ads"? It's really quite easy for you to get into the mindset that you've been attracted by another great title worth $16.95 but where's the book?

Well The Wizard of Ads really is quite refreshing even after five years it hasn't lost it's Useful life (depreciated in value) or it's Shelf life by growing stale. I bought this book on January 9, 2002 and it's still helping me convert my thought life over into an amazing master of Marketing.

I'm not going to tell you about the book as much as I am going to tell you why I feel it works for me and if you're lucky and you like what I share it just may be a good book for you to get too. You see Roy H. Williams really has done something fresh.

This book is filled with 100 concepts that every good ad-woman or ad-man should know. And if you're really not into Advertising or Marketing concepts maybe you'll find it in you to tell your mind to "Shut UP!" for a moment so you can see how easily these concepts apply to Selling, Customer Service, Management or becoming a dangerously articulate entreprenuer business person like Roy.

The first of 100 illustrations or stories opens with an interesting conversational tone that pulls you into the dialogue and from there you really never quite feel like Roys talking to anyone but you. That's what grasped my attention.

Next although this book is paper back it is well constructed. Words printed on egg shell white paper and wonderful nostalgic imagery from the past but don't let that fool you. (The stories are quite universal and can be used in various industries). He talks about Mouse Traps, Sharks and Pigs, Nine Secret Words and a Peep behind the curtain (from the Wizard of Oz).

These unusual titles run from the beginning to the end of the book and every story is full of zeal and freshness you can use in your concepts. He helps you formulate a Marketing mindset, an approach and a wise way to tap into your audiences attention without being corny, trite or confusing.

I've waited till now to right this review as it has taken me years to test these ideas again and again. What's nice is they all are effective and cheaper than hiring Roy yourself. But a man with ideas like this is worth hiring. Get the book...It works! And yes Roy H. Williams really knows what he's talking about.

A Fun Read for Anyone - Guaranteed!.......2007-01-12

A fun book full of stories and thoughtful views. The first section is more advertising related... but still interesting. The rest of the book is a wonderful read and VERY entertaining. 1-2 page chapters are great for people like me who can't pay attention very long. Read one a day. Read a few at a time. It's great! Highly recommended.

The Uncreative Need Not Read.......2007-01-03

I agree, the first two-thirds of the book are great, the last third is a little slow. You will find the first third contains the tools to make copywrite magic. The middle third is about "don't blame the advertising guy for customers not coming back because your an inept fool in a business". The last third is about courage to follow your dream.

I have read other marketing books about how to get to the target audience, but none of them discussed the nuts and bolts of what good copy looks like or how to make advertisements that sell. Roy is thought provoking and has great insights. Creativity must be supplied, but the tools of using that creativity are in the book.

Each page is an example of a good advertisement. You become hooked, you become engaged, and you are rewarded by the time you reach the end of the page.

If you are trying to learn how to become a marketer this book also isn't for you, yet. This book works best with someone who already has a foundation in marketing but looking for information on advertising.

Interesting Discussion of Lesser-Known Blues Tradition.......2007-10-15

This book follows up on Pearson's collection of biographies of blues musicians, entitled "Sounds So Good To Me." That phrase, in fact, is from a story that John Cephas told Pearson, and it appears once again in this fuller account of Cephas's life story. "Virginia Piedmont Blues" gives the life histories of Archie Edwards and John Cephas, as told in their own words and edited together by Pearson. Both biographies are interesting and compelling reading. They provide a much more comprehensive understanding of life history than Pearson provides in his earlier book, and both bluesmen are fine storytellers. This book is especially valuable because its focus is on the Piedmont tradition of country blues playing. This style is more commonly played in the area between Washington DC down into Georgia, from where it gets its name, and it is unfortunate that these players generally are not as well-known as the more prominent musicians who play Delta blues. The Piedmont style features intricate techniques of finger-picking, rich vocals, and ornate harmonica playing, and the range of genres encompassed within the style is an ample mixture of old-time string band tunes, blues ballads, popular songs of the 19th century, British broadsides, ragtime, and other eclectic forms. Pearson provides an excellent characterization of this style, and he tracks out its influences on contemporary music. He then allows Edwards and Cephas to tell their life histories, following each narrative with a rich discussion of many of the tunes in their repertoires. Having such a large number of lyrics available, along with well-documented annotations, is an important resource for anyone interested in blues music. The book ends with a conclusion that draws together key points in his discussion. It's an excellent read for anyone interested in the blues, and it serves as a fine introduction to this unique style of guitar playing. It serves as a good follow up to "Sound so good to me," and the book fleshes out the vibrant context for Pearson's subsequent book on blues and storytelling, "Jook Right On."

Having actually met the author, I'm completely amazed by this true story. I can't imagine having to live through the experiences in which she faced with courage and hope,as well as fear. I believe everyone should read this great story of an unbelievable survival through the horrific times of the holocaust of someone who kept going and continued on to build an amazing life and create such a wonderful family. This is truly the story of the American dream and having it come true.

A grandmother's life as told to her grandchildren.......2001-05-03

This is the autobiography of an East European Jewess who lived through the Holocaust in a small Transcarpathian city called Uzhorod. She does not experience life in a concentration camp or a prison, but is hidden by a Ukrainian family who tries to convert her. After the war she moved to Canada and then the USA with her husband and child.The story is told as if she is writing her memoirs to her two grandchildren. This adds a warm and personal touch to the story. The book is illustrated with eleven black-and-white photographs of family members. This is a moving tale of good people living simple good lives in exceedingly difficult times and surviving. It is a joy to read. Recommended for Holocaust scholars and those interested in the history of Transcarpathia.
