              Book Description

When journalist Neil Humphreys moved from his native England to the small island country called Singapore, he began to write articles about his observations of the quirky city for a local newspaper. With his trademark wit and style, Humphreys' readership and popularity grew and included both locals and expats. Local Singaporeans found his observations so dead-on they couldn't find fault with him and are now loyal readers.

Notes From An Even Smaller Island is a collection of Humphreys' essays about life in Singapore. From the aunties in the hawker centres to expats dressed as bananas, from Singlish to Kiasuism, Humphreys takes in in-depth, candid and often comical look at the idiosyncrasies of Singaporeans.

Notes From An Even Smaller Island has been a national bestseller in Singapore for three consecutive years. It is a must read for anyone moving to or visiting Singapore -- or anyone who enjoys a good laugh.

              Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Inaccurate portrayal of life in Singapore.......2006-07-03

This book is essentially the author's view of Singapore with frequent comparisons to his hometown in England. I found the first 2 chapters funny and entertaining but it became an absolute nightmare after that. The author lacks a disciplined and focused mind and hops from this to that without having a clear perspective himself on the issues. One moment he is supportive of an issue, next he is on the extreme opposite before jumping back on the extreme contrary and the jabber goes on and on ...

I found his observations one-sided and exceptionally narcissistic. When you read this book you are left with the impression that Singapore and perhaps the whole universe revolves around the author. You will hear 2 dozen times about how tall and handsome he is. How talented and gifted he is in his profession and so on.

The author tries very hard to conceal his self-absorption and inadequacies with his sense of humour and the apparent light hearted view of things. The reality however is that he takes his opinions way too seriously and his one-sided views are the "non-negotiable truth".

I have been an expat in Singapore with strong current links. I am glad to confirm that this book is not an accurate portrayal of life in Singapore.

              In short:
              Entertaining? at times.
              Informative? NO.
              Style of writing? nauseating.
              Read? Don't bother !

              5 out of 5 stars Absolutely fantastic!!!.......2004-04-19

As a loud and arrogant ang moh (a.k.a. American, as Neil so eloquently describes us...ha, ha, ha...) living in Singapore, I can attest to the many of the wonderful idiosyncracies tht Neil describes in this wondeful book. I bought it on a whim on Orchard Road on a Saturday night, and finished it by Sunday night! Shiok, man! I couldn't put it down...even while I was cooking! It made me laugh over and over...but even more importantly, reminded me of what a wonderful and unique country Singapore really is! I can't wait to read the sequel! Aiya, getting too kiasu lah... ;-)

As a loud arrogant ang moh (a.k.a. an American, this is Neil's pleasant desciption of us...ha, ha, ha...) living in Singapore, I can attest to many of the wonderful idiosyncracies that Neil talks about in the book. Like the other reviewers, I bought the book on a whim on Orchard Road on a Saturday night, and was done with it by Sunday night. Shiok, man! I couldn't put the book down...even while I was cooking! It made me laugh over and over, and even more importantly, reminded me of what a wonderful and unique country Singapore really is! I can't wait to read the follow up! Aiya...getting too kiasu lah...

5 out of 5 stars Reader from Grays.......2003-09-06

What can I say, other than once I had picked the book up, I could not put it down. An excellent view on life in both Singapore and Dagenham, the author has a fantastic sense of humour. I want to visit Singapore now!!!!!!

              5 out of 5 stars Totally hilarious..........2003-08-14

The stories about his life seems hard to believe, with funerals being held around apartment buildings, to just simply very very loud ladies talking at the top of their lungs as a common day scenarios until you visit Singapore.

Instead of the typical Merlions (aka Effiel Towel of Paris, or Leaning Tower in Pisa), trips to "abroad" Sentosa (its connected to bridge which takes an average of 30 - 45mins of travelling time from anywhere in Singapore), or boring tourist spots, Neil Humphreys tell a hilarous way of the everyday Singapore life, and it is very easy to relate certain parts of the book that also occurs in many of the readers' lives. Many of my collegues and friends can attest to that! I'm just really fortunate to hear that no one can relate to living with his landlady, Saudita.

This book is a popular hit back in Singapore! I didn't imagine that they'll sell well over here. Well, of course it would! After meeting the man himself during his little autograph session downtown, you could easily relate the person in the book with the person introducing his book in the store. This guy puts notes of seriousnous in affairs of the country mixing it with humour to lighten the whole situation.

I can't wait to read his latest book that's been release a month back. Its been selling like hotcakes over here.

But if you think the cover is hideous, wait till you see the new book. They've got the Esplanade also known to us as durian/porcupine/bug eyes, with a much closer picture of him sans his scruffy beard in a ridiculously bright shirt. Just be beware and try not to read this book in public places, you'll have people thinking that you're a nutcase by laughing crazying to yourself in buses and getting kicked out of the libraries too.

                  Book Description

                  * Examines the renewable energy sector and its stakeholders, analyzing the reasons for past failures and the key features of successful policies
                  * Written in clear terms, this book contains the experience of world leaders in this field
                  * Including an executive summary, it will be an essential reference for decision-makers, offering a deep understanding of the underlying mechanisms

At a time when renewable energy attracts varying degrees of political support and mixed success in policy implementation, clear information on why and how to promote renewable energy markets is much needed, for decision-makers in particular. This book meets that need.

The reason for exploiting renewable energy sources should not be because they are cheap, or because fossil fuels are running out. The crucial reasons are: saving the environment, developing new industries and establishing more secure sources of energy. This book outlines how renewable energies can be promoted at a political level, encouraging the expansion of current markets and the establishment of new industries. Critical pathways are made clear, and key stakeholders are identified and described.

Acknowledging the importance of the media and the interaction between public and private bodies, this book sets out the rules of the game, the stakes and the strategies for success. Contributing authors include: Randy Swisher and Kevin Porter, Rakesh Bakshi, Gordon Edge, Sven Teske and Volker Hoffmann, Jose Luis Garcia and Emelio Menendez.

5 out of 5 stars Review of "Mim and the KLAN.......2004-03-13

Nicely illustrated by Quaker graphic designer, Susanna Peebles Combs, Mim and the KLAN contains twenty chapters of three to five pages each. Set in the author's home of Wabash County, Indiana in 1969, detailed descriptions of rural family farm life invoke memories of a radically different American life style. The teen-age main characters, Mim and her cousin Karen, are children of a Quaker farming family, and so their lives and conversations revolve around experience of farms, animals, extended family and their Quaker Meeting. The skeletal story of the Ku Klux Klan in Indiana laced into the main story line creates a sharply conflicting value system to the rural Quakers. "I [Mim] told Karen what Grampa and Grams had told me. 'The Klan was here in Indiana - not just the South. And it was here in our county - even among our church members.' I thought we were past all that bigotry - prejudice." "Karen, I am ashamed to say this is a state that still [1969] harbors prejudice." (page 21). The story then moves smartly along, yet retains its integrity and homespun character.
Karen cans strawberries and Mim raises animals for show (4-H) at the Indiana State Fair while a parallel story finds the Klan, the Quaker Meeting and public institutions, both at county and state levels in mutual support of one another. Strange bedfellows indeed; William Penn's "Holy Experiment" failure in 17th century Pennsylvania illustrated the incongruity of Quaker values and the moral inversion of politics, but for the Klan to have gained credibility and support in a Quaker Meeting is truly remarkable. Mim does some library research about the Klan and uncovers rather embarrassing facts about their Quaker Meeting and a mob lynching of two black men a generation ago. But the Klan=s tentacles reach down through the generations, and a close family friend agonizing through serious self-examination in a context of typical Quaker sympathy, trust and cooperative association highlights the starkly contrasting values.
A new friend, Jonathan, a young African-American man and expert harness race driver, is introduced by scenes at the State Fair, while Mim and Karen challenge contemporary stereotypes and the harsh consequences of prejudicial thinking that dominate public thought. Quaker values, and Klan values which still permeate society today, conflict directly in the final chapters where Mim and Karen make assumptions about Jonathan radically different than the police.
Thematically, there are dimensions of value systems that make the book appealing to reflective people of any age. Quaker communities implicitly assume that we are spiritual beings on a human journey, and so embrace trust, sympathy and mutual support for one another. The Quaker commitment to living in community, caring for others and grounding their spiritual guidance in the form of questions (The Queries) make it natural to extend community to other people without judgment. The Ku Klux Klan on the other hand, prides itself on ethnic superiority, mindless antagonism and hatred expressed in intimidation and murder - the polar opposite of community (pages 88 - 92). Precedence for such moral inversion is as old as history itself (Isaiah 5:20), and remains with us in the form of 'market morality', 'growth and progress', 'ethnic cleansing' and other popular political and business euphemisms. The Quaker community in the story, and in reality, is in sharp contrast to political, 'market' values where mutual adversity and competition replace cooperative association; predatory economics replaces sympathy, and contractual penalty replaces trust.
Cynthia Stanley Russell's book is rich with implied questions for discussion among young people. It would work well in youth discussion groups in which each participant has read the book at least once, and enters the discussion with questions well prepared. It is also a suitable reading for university classes in ethics, Indiana history and sociology. Mim and the Klan has a nice flow, well integrated themes and is grounded in a fertile history. There are many questions elicited by this book, and thoughtful adults who look past the surface structure will find a deep, rich significance for their own lives.

                                              Book Description

With over 100 compositions in his catalog, Ross Lee Finney is a highly regarded composer whose career spans more than 50 years. This work offers contemporary music scholars, students, and enthusiasts an in-depth survey of the life, works, and writings of this important composer, theorist, and teacher. Finney is one of the first significant composers to come out of the American Midwest. He is known for blazing new trails by writing tonal music in the serialist style, developing a unique method of composition by applying physics' theory of complementarity to music, and using symmetrical hexachords to achieve an overall tonal effect. An important addition to any music library. Of special interest are excerpts from the author's interview with Finney in 1992, which provide the reader with a unique insight into the life and work of this individual and innovative composer. The book is divided into four major sections: a biography, a list of works including detailed information regarding premieres and other significant performances, a complete discography of all commercial recordings, and a comprehensive bibliography of writings by and about Finney. Two appendices provide alphabetical and chronological lists of compositions, and a comprehensive index includes all important names, institutions, places, and events mentioned throughout the text.

                                                              Description:
In liquefied gas, bulk-storage facilities and plants, the separation distances between storage tanks and between a tank and a line of adjoining property that can be built are governed by local regulations and/or codes (e.g. National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 58, 2004). Separation distance requirements have been in the NFPA 58 Code for over 60 years; however, no scientific foundations (either theoretical or experimental) are available for the specified distances. Even though the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) industry has operated safely over the years, there is a question as to whether the code-specified distances provide sufficient safety to LPG-storage tanks, when they are exposed to large external fires. A radiation heat-transfer-based model is presented in this paper. The temporal variation of the vapor-wetted tank-wall temperature is calculated when exposed to thermal radiation from an external, non-impinging, large, 30.5m (100ft) diameter, highly radiative, hydrocarbon fuel (pool) fire located at a specified distance. Structural steel wall of a pressurized, liquefied gas container (such as the ASME LP-Gas tank) begins to lose its strength, when the wall temperature approaches a critical temperature, 810K (1000^oF). LP-Gas tank walls reaching close to this temperature will be a cause for major concern because of increased potential for tank failure, which could result in catastrophic consequences. Results from the model for exposure of different size ASME (LP-Gas) containers to a hydrocarbon pool fire of 30.5m (100ft) in diameter, located with its base edge at the separation distances specified by NFPA 58 [NFPA 58, Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code, Table 6.3.1, 2004 ed., National Fire Protection Association, Quincy, MA, 2004] indicate that the vapor-wetted wall temperature of the containers never reach the critical temperature under common wind conditions (0, 5 and 10m/s), with the flame tilting towards the tank. This indicates that the separation distances specified in the code are adequate for non-impingement type of fires. The model can be used to test the efficacy of other similar codes and regulations for other materials.

This "article" is one page of dirt-simple common sense advice that anyone who has ever even e-mailed another human being already knows. It is a list of twenty statements, such as "Check your e-mail twice a day, " and "Get back to people right away." In that sentence, I just gave you the article. Now you don't have to buy it. Yep, it's that basic. What a waste of money!

                                                                Description:
Populations differ not only in the frequency distributions of their traits. Differences between the states of traits may also be of relevance. Examples are genetic traits based on DNA fragment length polymorphisms, such as microsatellites. The new measure @D of the difference between two populations considers both types of difference. @D quantifies the changes that must be made in the frequencies of the trait states in the one population in order to match the frequency distribution in the second population, under the requirement that trait states be shifted to the most similar trait state possible, in analogy to the transportation problem of operations research. The properties of @D as a model-free, descriptive measure are contrasted to measures of population difference that apply the ''F"S"T-principle'' to trait differences. Its applicability in phylogenetic analysis is demonstrated using isoenzyme and microsatellite marker data.
