How soon they are forgotten..........2003-11-08

I have been a fan of Caldwell's since I first read one of his novels way back in the early 50's;that probably being "Tobacco Road or "God's Little Acre";written in 1932 and 1933 respectively.He was a prolific writer for around 50 years, easily rivalling the most popular writers of his time.His works of over 50 novels and large numbers of short stories covered the way of life of people all over America and even Russia during WW2.While others wrote about middle class and upper class ,he wrote about the poor,disinfrancised end of society;much as did Steinbeck.A couple of years ago I went looking for some of his other novels.I couldn't believe it,they are very hard to find.Most used bookstores,don't seem to know about him;if you are lucky ,if they can come up with the two books I mentioned;but what is more likely is they reply "Oh,you must mean Taylor Caldwell,let me help you."--yeah!I have manged to turn up most of his works and read and enjoyed them.I live in Canada and it seems that his name and work has become politically incorrect;I can't say what the case is in the US.
Anyway;be that be as it may,I found this Autobiography very good and told me a lot about him and his work.
I would think ,what the politically correct of today think,could concern him less were he alive today.
If you like Caldwell (and I don't mean Taylor),you should enjoy this book,which includes a listing of his work.

THE WANDERER.......2001-08-11

From the moment of his birth, Erskine Caldwell was destined to wander all over the world. Born of a school teacher mother and itinerant Presbyterian minister for a father, Erskine never lived in a place for more than two years. Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee were just a few of the states in which the family resided. In the first half of his autobiography, Erskine gives us a look at his uncoventional family. His mother insisted upon him being home schooled while his father taught him to become a free thinker in a fundamentalist southern environment.

Through his early experiences we see through Erskine's eyes the poverty, religious excesses, suppressed sexuality and ignorance that he encountered. It is through those experiences that Caldwell grows into manhood and develops a deep curiousity about people and the world. You will be astonished and amazed at the various escapades of life in which Caldwell finds himself.

The first part of his life is interesting but as we get into his life as a writer, the momentum fades. Very little is said about how he developed his style and its impact on the literary world. He doesn't reflect on the controversy surrounding Tobacco Road nor God's Little Acre. In fact he says much of nothing about himself other than his failed marriages, travels and disputes with agents and publishers.

With All My Might is not a detailed reflective tome of a man's life in literature. Rather we receive snippets of his life that are uneven and sometimes you are left wondering how did this man become a prolific writer? You won't find the answer in his work. He wanders everywhere in describing his life. For fans of Erskine Caldwell, this is a book to have in your library. It is a good read but not brilliant.

The author has come up with a great thought but this thought isn't profound enough to write a book. This is why the book is full of examples and lacks thought provoking insights.

A Interesting and Inspiring Book to Read.......2003-10-24

This book is very well to dress for the concept ¡§Disruption¡¨ and how does it works. There are many examples, a lot of are from the author¡¦s own company BDDP, which are very useful for explain the concepts. Also he attaches the pictures of the related advertisement, which makes it easy to understand. And the author introduces step by step, from the basic knowledge of the real advertising world, background knowledge, and then gets into the Disruption. Even in the practice chapter, he integrates the Management skills (Planner), Knowledge Management (Disruption World Bank) which is very useful and clear for readers to apply the strategy.

It even talks about how to use Disruption in the Information Age, which creative department can take advantage from advance technology to interact, communicate and provoke inspiration. Also it would help to store, present ideas, for instance, CD-Rom. But somehow, it is kind of burdensome to make it to a whole chapter.

However, some of the concepts are too similar and vague that they seems only created for the book. And some examples are used to explain different concepts, which may result some confusion. For example, Starbucks Coffee was used to explain Additions of Business Discontinuities, but also used to explain Viewpoint in the Vision chapter, which are different concepts. I think it is becuase this concept of Disruption only came from 2 articles printed on Wall Street Journal and La Fegaro, and the effort to expand it into a book centainly decreased its power.

But over all, this book is well written and very interesting to read, you couldn¡¦t put it down after you started it. I had already purchased the sequel of it, "Beyond Disruption", I hope there will be some latest view points and maybe solutions for some problems occered in the market after this book.

All Time Must-Read.......2003-07-28

If you ask me, this book belongs right up there with "Positioning" as one of the all time must-reads, not only for marketers and advertising people, but really for anyone in business. And while it was published in the mid-90s, it couldn't be more relevant today. At heart, what Mr. Dru says (and then supports with many examples) is that the only path to genuine business success is to fly in the face of conventional thinking.

Mr. Dru's background is as the leader of a large advertising agency; so many of his examples come from this area. However, as he points out, taking the safe route in almost any business endeavor-product development, business process design or marketing communications-is often the most dangerous course. Because any business activity that fails to disrupt, i.e. break with the norm, is unlikely to attract much attention (or business). Which, at a time when revenue and earnings growth is stagnant for most firms, and the tools of financial engineering all but exhausted, would seem to point to this new "best practice". Read this book and then inject a massive amount of disruption into the thinking that powers your enterprise.

A little disruption........2003-04-16

There are a few great truths here spread out among a good bit of superfluous material, but the truths are worthy of a read. The essential gem of the book is properly communicated in the title. If you want to make an omelette, you have to break some eggs. The trick is knowing when to take a risk and then managing that risk to achieve a desirable outcome. That is the heart of the book.

Dru often digresses into lengthy asides and stories that don't always illustrate or relate to her point. For example, I now know more than I care to know about her views on the differences between the American and European consumer. (Frankly she contradicts herself here.) Naturally there are cultural nuances that must be taken into account with most any marketing assignment, but having said that, she should have moved on and made that the subject of another book.

The important thing, in marketing and in business, is to sell product. No one cares much about winning awards, except for the creative and art directors. In the end, the consumer votes with his dollar, yen, peso or euro. That's the award that really counts, and toward that end, a little 'disruption' is a good thing!

What the advertising business is supposed to be about.......2002-11-14

This is a classic which should be in the library of anyone serious about our craft - or business, if that's the way you see it. J-M Dru sets out to break the rules - systematically. Its a little like how Edward de Bono approaches thinking: he gives you random and therefore unusual starting points so your journey will be a different one. Disruption is challenging stuff. In fact, I'm not convinced that every ad can or should be disruptive. But I do believe we should be asking the question of ourselves every time and saying "yes" a whole lot more often. Some of the tools he includes can be put into practice easily and they work well. I recommend them to young people in our agency. You never stop learning in the ad game. Buy this book or [...].

Too often billed as the scruffy-haired, swashbuckling sidekick to Mick Jagger, Keith gets a bum rap. This man is the resident philosopher of the Rolling Stones. Ask him a question and you get an unadulterated answer. For instance: What about the Beatles and their experience with the Mahareshi? "Hey that was their gig but I have to draw the line on swamis." In his own words, glitter rock 'n' roll came to Keith whether he wanted it or not. He is a man who simply loves his craft. Were he not a star, he would still be happy playing for tip-jar money. This is a man who on unencumbered Friday night has bangers and mash and plays dominoes with his dad. This is man of no fragile glamour rock ego. "I think photography is magic. It's even made me look good a couple of times." As for his reputation as reckless drug pirate: "I never turned blue in someone else's bathroom," he says, "that's the height of bad manners." Even behind the basset hound face of age, Keith hangs on to those youthful characteristics that have kept his cylinders firing for lo these many years. He still has his heroes. High in those ranks is none other that another charter member to the World's Greatest Rock 'n' Roll Band - Charlie Watts. "Without Charlie there would be no Stones," he says. So, Keith Richards. Wit and charm. Seem like an oxymoron. Hardly, make yourself "Happy" and don't deprive yourself of the "Satisfaction" that this little book gives.

Born in Boston in the late 1920s and early 1930s, these men were the subjects of the classic study Unraveling Juvenile Delinquency by Sheldon and Eleanor Glueck (1950). John Laub and Robert Sampson's long-term data, combined with in-depth interviews, defy the conventional wisdom that links individual traits such as poor verbal skills, limited self-control, and difficult temperament to long-term trajectories of offending. The authors reject the idea of categorizing offenders to reveal etiologies of offending--rather, they connect variability in behavior to social context. The Book itself isn't bad, I would recommend it to any Kim Anderson fan, but the poetry at times seems to overpower the pictures, that was my only problem with it, but this book would make a great gift also!

Even though we speak different languages my girl friend in Germany understood what I wanted to say by the very well done pictures by Kim Anderson. Pictures are worth a thousand words.

In this work, Dr. Metcalf adopts a new and refreshing approach, placing the main emphasis on the interior perspectives of his subjects, but without abandoning his academic objectivity. Long-time members of fifteen communities on five continents tell their own stories, responding to a set of questions prepared by Dr. Metcalf. We are given an insider's view of the different motives which inspire people to live in communities, and the various outcomes. The result is a fascinating snapshot of this unusual aspect of human nature as people confront the clash between ideal and reality. Their responses, as they struggle to find a 'modus vivendi', are as different as their original motives. Some of the communities are religious, some spiritual not tied to a creed, and some are secular. Most are rural, but two are urban. In a few, government is paternalistic, but most are democratic, some consensual, yet others an eclectic blend. A few embrace gender roles, others determinedly eschew them. All fifteen are open to the outside world and in that important respect avoid the charge of cultism.

Like the wider world, these communities face ongoing challenges of personality, governance, growth and maturity. Strong personalities may provoke conflict, alternatively the loss of a leader can be devastating. Growth produces bureaucracy which may stifle the inspiration of the community's original ideals. Techniques to resolve conflict and circumvent an arthritic maturity are as essential to the enduring community as they are to a city or country. There is instruction for all of us in the ways these social microcosms meet the challenges. One common feature, often neglected by our wider society, is that they seem to have fun together.

The daughter of a man about to leave on a trip wakes up crying during the night. She has just had a nightmare that his plane will crash. He relates real-life events to scientific studies, so the reader is a party not only to fantastic experiences and first-hand stories of the paranormal but also to the rationales for these experiences proposed by scientists. There is no more rewarding guide to the limits and powers of science in explaining psychic phenomena.

To a field filled with uncertainty and suspicion, Frohock brings a discerning eye, a critical sensibility, and a fundamental sense of curiosity about the role of mysticism in science. Even skeptics will be intrigued.
