In February 2000, at the age of 89, Doris Haddock decided to walk from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C., to lobby for campaign finance reform and spread her message along the way. Granny D is a journal of the challenges and triumphs of her trek, in which she "found so many new friends along the road" who entrusted her "with so much of their hearts." Along her route, she was greeted with marching bands, serenades, and parades. She spoke to children, bikers, fraternity boys, politicians, and wayward wanderers alike (some of whom joined her). She also caught the attention of journalists, though some were more interested in the little-old-lady angle than the reform message, but Granny became an expert at keeping the focus on her lobbying effort. And though various TV networks canceled their coverage because she was a "soft news" story, she managed to direct plenty of attention to her cause. Bronchitis, emphysema, and arthritis plagued her--not to mention the other aches and pains that would afflict the toughest of bodies on a 3,000-mile hike. Averaging 10 miles per day, she fought challenging terrain, heat, and even a twister in Texas that almost carried her right off the road. And she celebrated her 90th birthday along the way.The book is not all politics, though. As various people, events, and places spark memories of her life, she steps back from the topic of finance reform and shares many personal moments: falling in love, the formation of deep friendships, working through grief. The tone is witty and conversational and fraught with bits of wisdom. Much more than a political platform or a call to action, Granny D also chronicles a rich and meaningful life. --Jacque Holthusen

"There's a cancer, and it's killing our democracy. A poor man has to sell his soul to get elected. I cry for this country."Download Description
"There's a cancer, and it's killing our democracy. A poor man has to sell his soul to get elected. I cry for this country". On February 29, 2000, ninety-year-old Doris "Granny D" Haddock completed her 3,200-mile, fourteen-month walk from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. She walked through 105-degree deserts and blinding blizzards, despite arthritis and emphysema. Along the way, her remarkable speeches -- rich with wisdom, love, and political insight -- transformed individuals and communities and jump-started a full-blown movement. She became a national heroine. On her journey, Haddock kept a diary -- tracking the progress of her walk and recalling events in her life and the insights they have given her. Granny D celebrates an exuberant life of love, activism, and adventure -- from writing one-woman feminist plays in the 1930s to stopping nuclear testing near an Eskimo fishing village in 1960 to Haddock's current crusade. Threaded throughout is the spirit of her beloved hometown of Dublin/Peterborough, New Hampshire -- Thornton Wilder's inspiration for Grovers Corners in Our Town -- a quintessentially American center of New England pluck, Yankee ingenuity, and can-do attitude.Customer Reviews:

GREY-HAIRED ACTIVIST VOICES A CAUSE & MEANING OF HER LIFE.......2001-07-30
Granny D speaks to me when she says that "people have a great, unmet need that expresses their passions and values . . . they think they are being cheated out of that life--that they will die and it will have passed them by. They see an old woman doing something she believes in, and she somehow carries this ineffable something for them. Our shallow culture makes us people of great longing, for we are not always provided with opportunities to live out our most meaningful beliefs."
What begins as a journal of her remarkable trek, walking along roadsides at the pace of ten miles a day from California to Washington DC, transforms into another kind of account, the inner journey that brought her to this enterprise, the singular incidents and loving relationships that shaped and fostered her through her long life. By the end of this book, she can examine both her triumphs and trials and ask, "Do we see who we are, finally? Do we see, behind the curtain, the scars and insecurities that have controlled us? And when we see them and look them squarely in the eye, do they lose their power over us, backing down from their bullying bluster? Indeed they do. We become free to take our life in whatever shape it has become, and find a good and enjoyable use for it, serving others and ourselves."
Granny D shows that old age doesn't have to be synonymous with dotage, with being passive and indifferent to our world, to what goes on around us--to what the future may hold. She shows that age and accompanying infirmities are, at worst, inconvenience, not an excuse to block or ignore the desires of the heart and the active mind. She demonstrates, no matter the immediate outcome, the power of one. And she reminds me of a remark attributed to the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., that if one does not have a cause to live for, then one has no reason to die.

The Union Kommando in Auschwitz
Lore Shelley Manufacturer: University Press of America ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0761801952 |
Book Description
This book describes the "Union" munition factory in Auschwitz through the eyes of 36 former prisoners. Unlike arbitrarily collected testimony, these stories are actual eyewitness accounts of persons who worked in the same factory. The accounts are especially beneficial because they look at many events from different angles. The book sheds light on the women's resistance movement in the camp and recounts how the gun-powder was smuggled to the Sonderkommando for the uprising which took place on October 7, 1994. The accounts found in this study pay homage to the four women who lost their lives in the preparation for the rebellion. Such testimonies give a voice to those who cannot have one--the prisoners who were murdered. This book helps to bring to light the true events that for half a century participants--including German industrialists, civil institutions, the greater population of the western world, and the public at large--have kept in the dark. "The Union Kommando in Auschwitz" is an excellent text for courses and seminars in Contemporary History, Judaic Studies, European History, Holocaust Studies, and Women's Studies. Anyone interested in a true look at Jewish history and women's roles in history will enjoy this thoughtfully edited collection of personal accounts. Contents: Foreword; Preface; Acknowledgements; Introduction; The Conveyor Belt Section; The Control Section; The Gun Powder Room; The Machine Shop; Miscellaneous Factory Sections; Eye Witness Accounts by Auschwitz Survivors Who Did Not Work at the Union; Appendices; Notes; Afterword; Bibliography; Index; About the Editor.Books:
