Kenya Here I Come.......2003-02-27

I have not yet travelled to Kenya, but I have read this book. The aspect of the book that I enjoyed the most was Ms. Vachon's "no big deal" approach to dealing with a very different environment and culture. She really put me at ease, particularly in regard to family travel.

The book was also very well organized into logical sections, making it easy to find needed information.

The Perfect Trip Planner.......2003-02-11

I had always dreamed of going to Africa, but my husband was terrified at the prospect. We bought this Kenya guide in hopes of getting some accurate information. We found it very organized and pleasant to read. Ms. Vachon's book relieved many of his fears and we used the book intensely in planing our trip. Every tip, review and suggestion she wrote turned out to be true. We really credit this book in helping us experience the trip of a lifetime.

Kenya Guide: Be A Traveler--Not A Tourist.......2003-02-09

As a seasoned traveler, I have learned to rely on books like this to help me plan my trips. Long a fan of Frommer and Fodor, I trust these authorities when choosing b&bs, hotels, tours, etc. I can now add Vachon to my list. She's "right-on" when it comes to the facts and I wasn't a bit disappointed in taking her advice. As a native of Kenya, she knows things about the country that the mere visitor wouldn't be privy to...all the more reason to trust what she has to say. I recommend this book 100% for your first (or next) trip to this wonderful part of the world!

Very helpful book.......1997-12-25

After reading the book, gave a copy to a friend who was planning a trip to Kenya. All the information proved accurate. It was the deciding factor in including a balloon safari in the itinerary, which made the trip a smashing success. The book made a hero of the BIG BOY!

Not exactly rocket science.......2006-08-15

Merchandising math is all straight-forward algebra. This large format 340 page book is padded with a comprehensive description of merchandising, from fashion forecasting to merchandise hierarchies to vendor relations. The most useful information I found was how P&L is expanded for a typical retailer, and explanations of retail terms like maintained and cumulative margin. The exercises on planning P&L, preparing a six month plan and calculating OTB were useful, but the book is aimed at college students, anyone with retail work experience will find much of the material pretty obvious.

Victorian time-travel.......2003-03-10

This is a great book for those who would like to experience how Victorian men viewed Africa as well as what a great safari would have involved. As it is a day-by-day account, some of the geographical descriptions feel a little repetitive, but can be skimmed over without detracting from the story.It would be a great mistake to judge Stanley too critically by modern standards,however, or you may end up hating it from the beginning and getting nothing from it.

American journalist and adventurer, Henry M. Stanley recounts his mission in 1871, (on behalf of the New York Herald), to find the world famous explorer David Livingstone, who was presumably lost or even killed in East Africa. In his diary Stanley writes with stoicism, and without magnifying the epic hardships of the journey, (he was deserted by his bearers, plagued by disease and warring tribes). After travelling 700 miles in 236 days, he found the ailing Scottish missionary on the island of Ujiji on November 10, uttering his famous greeting: "Doctor Livingstone, I presume!" Together they explored the northern end of Lake Tangayika. Livingstone had journeyed extensively in central and southern Africa from 1840 and fought to destroy the slave trade. Livingstone died in 1873 on the Shores of Lake Bagweulu. His body was shipped back to England and buried in Westminster Abbey. On hearing of his hero's death, Stanley continued Livingstone's research of the region. Stanley's exploration of the region eventually led to the founding of the Congo Free State.

Mass Media has replaced the public square in the 21st Century. I teach production and design for media. For those who want to teach media literacy and an understanding of media and media systems in the United States this book offers valuable insight into our media's inner workings. Charles Warner spent decades in the trenches and board rooms of major media organizations. Without the knowledge of the inner workings of the systems for which they design, my students cannot produce meaningful and transformational design for the industry. As consumers of media and practitioners in the making of media, we need to understand the media selling world. Charles Warner's real world anecdotes are worth the price of the book. The Cable Television chapter by William Grimes is required reading for my Broadcast Design students. There have been scores of texts devoted to transactional selling skills. There are also some fine texts on Media Planning and buying....This is the first that I have uncovered that gives a comprehensive view to the skills needed to establish value and compete as a media sales rep. I was in radio sales management for27 years..I am currently teaching Advertising Sales at the University level...this text resembles the first 3 months of a rookie sales person.
