Book Description
Modern economics tends to shy away from issues which do not offer themselves to the kind of treatment considered appropriate, which pertain to the less neatly rational aspects of economic life and which at the same time carry an active load of socio-economic implications. The processes of the distribution and redistribution of income and the ways in which they may affect the working of the economy, the focus of this book, constitute such a topic, as yet not fully worked into the main body of economic doctrine. In many cases a powerful formative influence upon economic realities is the pressures exercised by groups, individuals, associations etc. through means fair and foul, with the purpose of increasing their distributive and redistributive share in output. By sorting such pressures out and weaving them into the fabric of established economic analysis, this book demonstrates, among other things, that rival theories claiming the economic truth (such as Keynesianism, monetarism, etc.) far from being mutually exclusive, constitute complementary building blocks in a more comprehensive scheme. This is a provocative book, argued on the level of the core of economic theory and logic, appealing to common sense, expressed in direct language, stripped of all unnecessary technicality and comprehensible to anybody with a good understanding of general economic principles

Errata.......2006-05-26
On several of the maps in this book the numbers do not match their descriptions. For example, on the map on page 18, item 95 is identified as the Hotel Hermitage. It is not. This hotel is several blocks away--it may be item 108, but the numbers of the descriptions end with 97.
Wrong number.......2006-02-12
Sadly, I have to agree with the previous three reviewers...
I have just emailed HarperCollins in Australia to see whether they have correct maps (the text looks ok) and will post the gist of their reply if it seems useful.
I HOPE the problem is only with Florence... I am going to Venice as well as Florence and the text looks useful.
It looks to me as though the text is correct and the maps are wrong - but I stand to be corrected :) by more knowledgeable readers.
UPDATE: The maps are indeed wrong, but HC Australia supplied correct ones. I suggest if you bought this flawed edition you contact HC and see how they can help.
HC's service in helping to find a reasonable solution (I go to Italy shortly) was excellent!
Full of mistakes.......2006-01-24
In general I've had good experience with the Access guides - Access Rome is my favorite guide for that city. This one, though, is disgracefully sloppy and full of errors. The Access books are organized around maps of neighbohoods of the cities they cover, with the location of each notable landmark, hotel, restaurant, etc. indicated by a number on the map; each map is followed by a text section with the descriptions keyed to the numbers on the map. The problem with this guide is that the numbers on the maps don't match the numbered descriptions in the text. A few examples: the map of the Centro Storico section of Florence (p. 18) has the number 8 where the Duomo is and 7 where the Baptistry is; but in the text the corresponding descriptions have numbers 9 and 18. In the section on the Oltrarno district of Florence, the Hotel Lungarno on the Borgo San Jacopo has number 22 in the text, but on the map (p. 116) number 22 is on a completely different street a few blocks away. In the section on the Castello sestiere of Venice, the text lists the Hotel Metropole on the Riva degli Schiavoni as number 40; but the map shows number 40 on San Pietro, about a kilometer from where the hotel actually is (it's where number 35 is on the map). Number 39 on the same map is right on the Ponte San Pietro; but in the text the Ponte San Pietro is listed as number 31. And there are lots more - at least half of the map numbers I checked are incorrect. Didn't Harper Collins proofread this book? They should recall it and give everyone who bought it their money back.
DON'T rely on the map numbers!.......2006-01-09
I agree totally with the reviewer who complains about the lack of relationship between map numbers and street addresses. This edition is completely messed up, and unaware tourists are going to be standing in Florence, book in hand, wondering where the #$@&! the museum/gelateria/hotel is that was on the map for that location. What a shame - Access guides are usually just the best street-by-street guides around. And this isn't a matter of just being one number off, consistently, or of the location being just around the corner. Numbers on the map send you all the way across town sometimes, compared to where the location really is. Extremely weird and unexplainable. Why isn't HarperCollins pulling this off the shelves and/or offering buyers a corrected edition? Someone really dropped the ball here.
Riddled with errors.......2005-07-03
We have used Access guides for almost twenty years for many locations. They have always provided a strong alternative to the traditional guides, with a particular emphasis on architecture and design. We have returned our copy of this book. The maps for Florence are completely inaccurate with no co-relation between text and map numbers. Essentially the guide is of little use without a separate map. .

Customer Reviews:
This one will go with me...........2001-02-07
This guide is a keeper, if only for the great maps! Arranged by neighborhood, I can see myself needing them when I'm in Italy. Also, I like the "day-trips" section for each city. Other city guides don't have this information, and it's really helpful for that day out. The guide is a bit long, so you have to make sure that your day trip bag is large enough for it.
What this guide does lack is depth - historical, artistic depth. If you are traveling in Venice or Florence, it is just essential that you know about what you're seeing. That's part of why we go to these amazing historic sites. I would suggest traveling with a Blue Guide for each city that you visit. They are a great packing size, and they offer so much more descriptive information. They don't offer too much practical information, so that's why I'll be taking the Access Guide with me too.
the only travel guide we actually pack.......2000-09-22
This guide series is one of the easiest to use and especially if you have never travelled to the destination before. Broken both into regions or neighborhoods and color coded to distinguish restaurants, hotels, shopping and points of interest. This is very useful when one finds themselves hungry in an unfamilair part of town. The reviews are very good, with great recomendations. You will never want to use another travel guide after this series.
Great handy travel guide with terrific layout.......2000-01-30
This is a great book if you only want to pack 1 travel guide on your vacation. All points of interest are listed in the same order you would find them as you walk through each neighborhood, and they're clearly labeled on the neighborhood maps. The writing is very engaging and candid, offering just enough art historical background to get a better understanding of points of interest, while restaurant and hotel reviews offer the "inside scoop." Contrary to the previous reviewer, I liked the "personal touch" of having residents list their favorite spots - who cares if they've been paid or not - their suggestions are still good. Color-coding also makes for very handy reference. I loved this book and highly recommend it.
There are better travel books on Florence & Venice.......1999-08-23
This book confuses succinct, targeted travel information with "informationals" about those who may have paid to get in the book. It is not a well organized book.

Customer Reviews:
Well organized but NO FACT CHECKING.......2003-12-13
While these books are always really well-organized by neighborhood, this new edition is riddled with errors. They still describe things in Lira even though they tell you Italy has converted to the Euro and information on many stores, sites and hotels is incorrect, especially hours. We went to many churches that were closed. Some stores no longer even exist. Also, lots of missing information, particularly on new hotels. Use this book for its useful maps and reviews, but check addresses and hours carefully before you go anywhere.

Book Description
The romance between Joséphine de Beauharnais and Napoléon Bonaparte is one of the most dramatic in history, but the crucial role this beautiful, intelligent woman played in their partnership has never before been completely acknowledged. In this spirited biography, rich in detail and anecdote, Eleanor DeLorme brings the exotic empress to life, revealing how greatly Napoléon confided in "his incomparable Joséphine" and depended on her sense of style to set the tone of his empire. An important patron of the arts, Joséphine collected works of the highest quality, and her exquisite and extravagant taste was admired and adopted all over the Empire. Along with portraits of the empress, her family, and numerous dignitaries, this elegant book contains many period images of significant events in Joséphine's life. Based on a close study of the couple's letters, the memoirs of Joséphine's two children, and other primary sources, DeLorme's delightful text describes all the amazing facets of this fascinating figure.
Customer Reviews:
Read also "The Emperor's Lady" by F.W. Kenyon.......2003-06-09
My fascination with the Empress Josephine began with "The Emperor's Lady" by F.W. Kenyon. It was published in 1952. Mrs. DeLorme's book sounds like a good complement to this book, with its indepth commentary on Josephine's impact on art, fashion, and her insights into Josephine as a contributing partner to Napoleon's career. If you like historical fiction, you will also enjoy "The Emperor's Lady".
New Insight to this Historical Figure.......2003-01-16
This was a Christmas gift from my in-laws and a real treasure that is hard to put down.
Despite Delorme love affair with the French she is surprisingly honest in this biography of Josephine. There are many interesting insights into this strong female figure, both politically and personally. For instance she is quite a bit like Abigail Adams in that both women were true partners to their spouses political positions and worked deligently on their behalf. Josephine was also a single mother for sometime and realised to late in life that Napolean was the love of her life.
All in all, this is a comfortable read and a great gift idea.

Curtis Joseph, the two-time NHL All-Star is profiled. From how he became "Cujo" to his role as an international competitor, this book takes a look at Curtis' early years, his stints with the St. Louis Blues and Edmonton Oilers and his current role as the Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender.

Great Pictures and Lots of information.......2000-04-16
This book had great action pictures of Cujo. I really liked the tips Cujo gave for younger players to help them to improve their game. I also thought Curtis Joesph's schedule at the end of the book was neat too. Anyone who likes Cujo or the Toronto Maple Leafs should get this book.

Book Description
Rarely has a book captured the attention of Christians of all ages as Jesus Freaks has with its stories of Christian martyrs. Jesus Freaks, Vol. II, features testimonies of revolutionaries who took a stand for Christ against the culture of their day, along with new stories of martyrs through the centuries. dc Talk again challenges readers to pray for the persecuted church around the world and openly stand for Jesus.
Customer Reviews:
True believers.......2007-01-16
Great book. My 10 year old son requested it. The stories are graphic and painful to read, but the courage and testimony of these martyrs is REAL and there are lessons for all of us, especially those of us who are Christian.
One of the Best Books I Have EVER Read.......2005-03-07
Ok. So normally I am an avid reader, but there are few nonfiction books that really grasp my interest and hold it. My sister bought this book for me as a Christmas/birthday gift and I devouered it (literally!). It has stories in it about Christians from the past 2000 years up until the present day who have been persecuted for their faith. It has really encouraged me to live the way that they do.
Fearing God Not Man.......2005-02-05
This book is so good!!! If you like bloody things you will like this book. If you like God a lot you will also love this book. If you like History than you will love this book.
GREAT.......2004-11-17
I'VE ONLY HAD THIS BOOK FOR ONE DAY AND I'M ALMOST DONE THE BOOK IS SHORT STORIES OF PEOPLE WHO STOOD BY THEIR FAITH NOT CARING WHAT HAPPENS TO THEM JUST BECAUSE PEOPLE DON'T LIKE THAT THEIR CHRISTIANS. IN ONE STORY AN OLD MAN IS GETTING READY TO BE EXECUTED AND HE SAYS"IF I'M GOING TO DIE TODAY THEN I'M HERE TO DIE FOR THE LORD. IN ANOTHER STORY ONE MAN IS BEING THROWN IN JAIL FOR SAYING HE BELIEVES IN THE LORD ANOTHER MAN SEES THIS AND CLAIMS HE'S A CHRISTIAN ALSO AND HE GETS THROWN IN JAIL BEFORE THEIR EXECUTION THEY SAY THAT THEY APOLOGIZE TO THE LORD FOR NOT DOING ENOUGH AND DOES NOT APOLOGIZE TO THEIR KING.
IN ANOTHER STORY SOME CHINESE ARE TRYING TO GET CHRISTIANITY LEGAL IN CHINA AND THEY GET BEAT THEY SHOWED THAT 200 PEOPLE IN CHINA THAT ARE CHRISTIANS GET BEAT UNTIL THEY ARE PERMANENTLY CRIPPLED AND OVER 20000 CHINESE BECOME CHRISTIANS A YEAR. THIS BOOK IS VERY MOVING AND VERY POWERFUL IF YOU ARE A JESUS FREAK YOU SHOULD BUY THIS.
Not as good.........2004-07-02
The first Jesus Freaks is so much better. I always hate doing this to my own brethren but don't read this second book.

Book Description
This is a beautifully illustrated story showing the seasons in a garden and the creatures that visit there, and introducing the loss of a loved one. Evie loves the garden, especially on Mondays when the old gardener comes. He shows her everything in the garden, introducing her to the robin, the newts, and the frogs. "Do you like making gardens?" She asks. "I don't make gardens, Eve," he says, "God does. I just help." Then one Monday he doesn't come, and Mum says he won't be coming any more. He has gone to help God all the time. But Evie will never forget him and all the things he has taught her.
