Lots of lovely memories.......2001-10-28

Insight Compact Guides are great. This one has 12 routes for you to follow as you travel through this stunningly beautiful country. All the major sights are featured with pictures and a rating. I like this feature since - as you will find - the authors are pretty good judges of what is worth seeing and what is not. It's also nice to see the Aland Islands included as one of the trips. My wife and I had a tremendous time cycling around them in the early autumn of 1999 - when the sea and sky were deep blue and the myriad forests a swathe of gold and red.

There are two big selling points for these guide books. One they are very small, light and easy to follow. Two, into a mere 100 odd pages, the authors have crammed a wealth of info/pictures on the country, its history, culture, customs - as well as 12 unforgettable journey's.

Great book for getting guick background on Finland.......2000-05-24

The Insight Guide series is, in general, a really good introduction to any of the countries that they have chosen to focus on. This one on Finland, like all of them, is full of great photo's and good historical, economic, social, and political descriptions.

The tourist descriptions of what to see, places to stay and eat, etc. always seem to be pretty good and accurate.

This book is a great combination of a tourist guide and cultural description of Finland, a country between the east and the west.

There are plenty of great color pictures included which makes this book lovely reading before and especially after your trip to Finland. Even though you would never travel to Finland this book will reveal much more than a weekend trip would do.

The best part of this book apart from the great pictures is that is does not only describe the popular sights to visit but it goes deep into the Finnish society and culture without being too heavy reading.

I warmly recommend this book to everyone who is interested in Finland.

Wake Up Call for Catholics.......2006-10-31

It's so easy being a Catholic in the United States: priests who are your buddies, who stop over for Thanksgiving meals, know your kids by name, offer wholesome, practical advice for marriage and high school football, and who will have a Bud Light with you in the early autumn afternoon.

Not so easy when you're a young member of the Swiss Guards in the Vatican: priests are not your buddies, priests refuse to counsel you, your fellow Swiss guards insult your use of French and give you punishments when you don't deserve them. If you were a Swiss/French Guard, you might never come of age. You might be dead.

As we have found in some public schools throughout the USA, bullying can lead to mass murder when those being bullied see no other way out. Such is the situation in John Follain's CITY OF SECRETS. We Catholic readers have our eyes opened to the reality of the closed-society that is the Vatican.

If you want to keep your eyes closed to the severe problems within our beloved church, don't read this book.

If you think having a secret society, OPUS DEI, propagandizing side-by-side with the true mission of the church, then you absolutely must read the book. You have been sleeping as have I.

Be prepared to be shocked. Or, have the politicizing and manipulations found in the American church's pedophile scandal already opened your eyes wide?

In that it gives a look at some other murders outside of the mysterious death of John Paul I, this is a refreshing book. Yet, since it does not invlove a Pope it is likely to suffer unfairly from less interest. I recommend you not pass it up. An alternative is Lucien Gregoire's "Murder in the Vatican" which takes one on a methodical imvestigation of the murder of eight men which combination was the leadership of the progressive movement in Church - including the 'murders' of John Paul I and Paul VI. That all of these men died mysteriously within a few months of each other itself would arouse ones suspicions - but Gregoire offers much more than just that. I would recommend you buy these books as a package.

This is another book that deals with the hypocrites in the Vatican.

People seems surprised when their hear of crimes in the Vatican, but this is an organization that supports and promotes priest who molest little boys.

The latest example of the lies and hypocrisy of the Vatican can be found with this week's tsunami.

The official newspaper of the Vatican had a spurious and misleading report that falsely claimed the Israeli government had denied emergency relief for tsunami victims in Sri Lanka.

The official Vatican newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano singled out Israeli leaders for declining the country's request for emergency help, when in fact the Israeli government's offer to provide a team of medical and security personnel was rejected by the Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry. However, Israel is providing an airlift of food and medical supplies to Sri Lanka.

Can you believe that? The Vatican defends priest who are child molesters yet has the gall to falsely criticize Israel.

ALTHOUGH THE BOOK I THINK DOES NOT FINALIZE THE CONCLUSION, I FOUND THE METHODS THE AUTHOR TRIED TO PASTE TOGETHER THE BITS AND PIECES OF TRUTH OR INFORMATION WELL WORTH THE READ. IN THE END I THINK THE BOOK ANALYZES THE CHURCH MORE THAN IT SHOULD BUT THEN AGAIN WHY NOT?

The strength of John Follain's book, based on his four-year investigation, is that we end up with a firm understanding of why Tornay did it. City of Secrets is both superb journalism and an outstanding example of forensic psychology.
Secondhand investigations of sensational crimes are often nothing more than instant books. However, Follain not only took the time to contribute something of worth to the canon of crime journalism but also exposed weaknesses in the Vatican that need addressing. In this case it is the fact that the Swiss Guard, supposedly responsible for protecting the Pope, are nothing more than toy soldiers -- Dennis Chute, The Edmonton Journal

McCartney Fans Don't Pass Up This Gem.......2007-05-15

Actually this book is a diamond in the rough. I found a beat up copy in the library and almost passed it up because at first glance, it seemed slight. But if you look at the bibliographies of almost every Beatles book,you will find this book as one of the references. After reading it, it's easy to see why.

Like Barry Mile's Many Years From Now, this book is a character study,the difference is in Mile's book Paul tells the story in his own words,but in this book, Salewicz interviewed many people who know/knew Paul very well in many cases,before he was famous. What you get essentially, is a feeling of going back in time. Salewicz took the unusual route of concentrating on Paul's early life. He covers the years 1942-1970 and a little bit after,but about 90% of this book actually covers his childhood,and youth until about age 23. A few reviewers complained about this,calling it 'half a book',but I don't know why. There are many good books on the Beatles,and Many Years From Now is an excellent book on McCartney. Even Chris Sanford's book isn't too bad for a book on his entire life. But no one's ever told the story of his early life in this much detail. I found it facinating,and quite a nice change.

What I really loved is that Salewicz also chose to interview atypical people like Paul's teachers, his scout master, members of the Scaffold, (Mike McCartney's poetry group),and two girlfriends,Iris Caldwell,and Thelma Pickles(who was also John's old flame but Paul dated her in 1962-63). By talking to people like this,the author is able to show Paul not as a super star but as a person. Incidentally,all these people thought he was a lovely guy.

So now I know in vivid detail, what kind of student Paul was,what kind of Boyscout, what kind of boyfriend,etc. Was he brave? Shy? Strong? Was he warm? Deep? Sad? Clingy? Was he afraid of rejection? Afraid of his future? Did he like sexually agressive women? Okay that one I'll give away...(no). Was he a drinker or was he so unable to hold his liquor that he had to be bundled into a cab before 10:00,and deposited home? Oops,gave another one away.

I loved this book because it was so unpretentious just like it's subject. If you read this one and Many Years From Now, you will pretty much know who this guy is. Where he came from, what kind of family he had,etc., and this goes a long way in explaining who he became. The only thing I didn't like,and here we go again, is the author's depiction of John. I don't know why so many McCartney books(except for Many years From Now) have to show John as angry, drunk,and jealous of Paul. This is only a fraction of John's personality and I would have liked to see other sides to him in regard to Paul. Why do 'insider' books do a good job of this, but not these 'outsider' books? Oh well at least Mile's Many Years From Now gives you a wonderfully rounded profile on Lennon and McCartney's friendship and partnership as do a few other 'insider' books. Anyway this,Salewicz book is more than worth your time. I couldn't put it down.

Child Is The Father Of The Beatle.......2005-03-01

After his mother dies of cancer, preteen Paul McCartney puts on a seemingly untroubled face while channeling his woe into a fierce determination to succeed, not to mention an artistic sense of melancholia that will help get him there. Thus Chris Salewicz makes a compelling argument for what drove McCartney to help found the world's greatest pop music band.

A fairly skimpy bio by today's standards, "McCartney" deserves credit for raising the bar for Beatle historians back in 1986. When Philip Norman published "Shout" some years before, he credited the recently-murdered John Lennon with 90 percent of the Beatles' enduring legacy, a tack taken by many others. Salewicz makes the point that Lennon was duffing around with some chums, unaware of how to even tune a guitar, until the more disciplined McCartney appeared one day at a garden fete where Lennon's band, the Quarrymen, were playing.

"Their relationship was not so one-sided: as much as John was inspired to progress by Paul's unswerving diligence, so the younger boy was equally liberated by John's anarchic direction," he writes.

Salewicz painstakingly details McCartney's boyhood days in Liverpool, paying special attention to his schooling and teachers and the academic promise he showed before devoting himself to rock 'n' roll. There's some nice comments Salewicz brings in from interviewing everyone from his classmates to his German teacher to his next-door neighbor who recalls the misery-inducing racket of John, Paul, and their little friend George Harrison working out the rudiments of what would become a cultural revolution. "It was a terrific row to our ears - absolutely horrible," he says.

Salewicz's research even finds some interesting, eerie facts: for example, the first piano in Paul's father's life came from NEMS furniture store, the same company Brian Epstein later ran when he discovered the Beatles.

But this is really half a book, which comes apart after the Beatles make it big. Too many key sources (like Paul and the other surviving Beatles) were unavailable to Salewicz, and the result is an obvious clip job that dampens what could have been a very strong account of McCartney's life. Salewicz's failure to give context, explaining who he interviewed and what he picked up from other sources, leaves a loosely-stranded narrative where trivial bits are thrown up in the way of substance while large segments of McCartney's life fly past undigested.

By the time Salewicz gets to McCartney's post-Beatles period, he is left making some tired criticisms of Wings' lack of artistic validity and quoting Nick Lowe about Paul's ability to travel long distances without requiring a bathroom break. There's a whole rich tale left unexplored.

I wish McCartney had given Salewicz some time. The writer is fair and quite good at synthesizing McCartney's earliest days into readable form. But the paucity of primary sources costs this book deeply near the end. Really, if you read this book up to Salewicz's account of the writing of "Yesterday" (which he notes authoritatively has its genesis in his mother's passing) and then put it down, you are missing very little unless you are the most ardent of Paul fans.

McCARTNEY MUSINGS.......2002-03-02

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is well researched and equally well written.

I really like the way interviews with people who knew the former Beatle are included; one gets a "personal" picture of Paul McCartney. This author is skilled at bringing Paul McCartney to the forefront of his readers' collective consciousness.

This book gets three cheers and a hearty "yeah, yeah, yeah"! from me!

A great book to read, compliments his auth. bio well........1999-04-16

This book covers Paul's youth, parents background and some background info on his family tree. A great way to get comfortable with the environment which created Paul; as a son, brother, friend & ultimatly as a musician and enertainer.

Interviews with teachers, friends from Liverpool create a well balanced look at Pauls background and the dynamics of how and where the Beatles met.

A must read for Beatle and McCartney fans.

Bitter Survival.......2006-05-05

This is the experiences of Cecilie Klein who lost all her family in the Holocost. Her father, her mother and little sister. She survived every rotten thing inflicted upon her not just by the nazis but also Jewish collaborators in the Ghettos, Auschwitz and Bergen Belsen.

In the end, her most significant scene is when she bumps into one of her former tormenters, the Kapo Masha who collaborated with the SS to survive and discovers her secret.

This is Cecilie Klein's story of unhappy survival.

i read this book and it brought tears to my eyes. but i also know this lady . she is my best friends grandma which is how i met her and came to know about her life. i would just like to say i would reccomend this book to people that want to know more about what happened in world war 2 a great book but very tearful
