5 out of 5 stars Hoping to Visit Brittany & Normandy.......2006-08-18

This is a detailed and helpful guide book which appears to cover almost all of the questions a visitor to Brittany & Normandy might ask before and after arrival. The Contents page shows the variety of subjects covered. Among the many sections, there are recommendations on preparing for unexpected health problems; there is a brief language/phrase section and a glossary for quick French/English or English/French one word references on a travelor's most commonly needed words/translations. For each area reviewed, there are brief commentaries about history, points of interest and transport. In the Directory section there are suggestions and telephone numbers and references for finding rentals, camp sites, hotels, restaurants, culture, shopping, and regional attributes and regional agriculture. There are contact numbers or addresses for variously priced lodgings and overnight accommodations as well as other services. Much information, including small maps, is squeezed into this 368 page book to read and savor ahead of the trip, as well as for every day reference while touring. This little book could be the only Brittany & Normandy guide book needed, tucked into your carry-on...and kept in pocket for use from landing until departure.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent guide and a must buy.......2005-06-29

I hesitated to buy this book to plan a recent tritp to Normandy -- with a high-speed connection to the Internet, doing research with travel books seemed so pointless and expensive. Besides, buying the book seemed to open Pandora's Box -- we're doing quite a bit of traveling nowadays, and if we bought this book, shouldn't we buy a book for every country we're visiting in the coming months? This could easily rack up expenses for frugral travelers.

It turned out to be a great decision to spend the dozen or so dollars on this book. Jam-packed with helpful information and wonderful maps (besides the ones in the DK travel guides, Lonely Planet offers better maps than any guide book I've tried to use), I referred to this book over and over again during both planning and travel.

The information in it is occasionally outdated, but no book is ever completely up to date. For example, prices have gone up and hours have changed. Not a problem though, because the book offers phone numbers and websites to check the info. We used it to find campsites and places to visit. It pointed us to things that we would otherwise never have known existed -- e.g. the Pont du Normandie and the Route des Traditions. And it steered us clear of some cities so that we could spend more time on what we were interested in.

The book also includes sections on the history of the area and information about local foods and customs. It's just chock full of everything you'll need to plan your trip -- info about tolls and transportation, French phrases, etc. Definitely pick this one up!

      4 out of 5 stars A Business-like Guide.......2004-08-18

This one does exactly what it says on the packet. Accurate, up-to-date (it's a year newer than its competitors) and easy-to-use. A bit low on illustrations and pictures, so not got the coffee-table factor, but that's not what it's for. Very good on camp site info.

          Book Description

Brig. Gen. William Tatum Wofford's life spanned the greater part of the 19th century. He managed to be a part of most of the momentous issues that shaped Georgia history in that era. From the Mexican War in 1847-48 to the famous Georgia Constitutional Convention of 1877, Wofford left an indelible impression among his contemporaries. In the state legislature and in the Confederate military, he knew well the likes of Robert Toombs, A R Lawton, the Cobb brothers, Joseph E Brown, the Stephens brothers, James Longstreet, Robert E Lee, and Jefferson Davis. Even when they disagreed with him on political or military matters, these men were impressed with his probity, generosity, and high-mindedness. This book is the only existing biography of this prominent Georgia soldier and statesman

            Book Description

A comprehensive guide to creating a toxin-free, environmentally friendly homewith an eye toward bringing health and harmony to those living there and those living on the earth as a whole Recent studies show that nearly one-third of American adults, or 63 million consumers, care deeply about health and environmental issues and the realization of human potential through a unity of mind, body, and spirit. Appealing directly to the Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability (LOHAS) market, this informative and practical guide helps readers tend to their living spaces in ecologically sound ways that protect the health and safety of their families and the world around them. From selecting weekly produce to purchasing a water- filtration system, from using a steam cleaner or non-toxic pest controls to adjusting the energy in a home with crystals and aromatherapy, Home Enlightenment examines the environmental impact of the choices a consumer makes and helps readers establish day-to-day practices and a lifestyle that bring healing and natural spirituality into their homes. The author, host of Annies Healthy Living Network online, is one of the most trusted names in the health and environmental awareness field. Twice poisoned by chemicals as a young adult, Annie has become one of the champions of toxin-free living. Here she shares her story of recovery, renewal, and transformation as a guide for living in a healthier home environment.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of easy info.......2007-08-24

I do not have a lot of time to read with four kids and this book was a easy fast book to get through. Lots of information that was displayed easily. Not the big words either. And in the back it a huge wonderful list of resources I could look up on the internet. Wealth of information. I gave this book to our school hoping when they remodel they consider what was written.

5 out of 5 stars Create a heathly, safe home for yourself and your family.......2007-05-13

This book helps you take better care of yourself and your love ones. We are concerned about what we eat and if it's safe. We also need to be concerned about what we use to clean our homes with and what we use on our skin. In this book there is lots of good, practical receipes for a toxin-free home. This book will be on that I will use often.

            5 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Path Toward Ecologically-Healthy Living.......2007-03-30

Have you ever wondered about the long-term effect of cleaning products in your home? What about pesticides, chemicals and all the other potentially toxic goods that invade our lives?

Twice poisoned by such things, author Annie Bond, host of "Annie's Healthy Living Network" online, offers realistic remedies for a natural and nontoxic lifestyle that include everything from eating and cleaning to gardening and dressing. A comprehensive path toward ecologically-healthy living.

            5 out of 5 stars Enlightenment Indeed!.......2007-03-22

Annie Bond has hit the mark with this one. It's a definite read for anyone looking to make an impact on their health and how their actions effect Mother Earth. I learned so much from this book about how our work/home environment, from carpet to paints, can be detrimental to our health and the environment we live in.

5 out of 5 stars Very pleasant book.......2007-03-11

Offers recipes for non toxic cleaning solutions as well as healthy alternatives for just about every system in your home you can think of. Annie Bond does indeed write as if she were sitting right in your living room talking to you. I will be getting copies of this book for gifts to newly married couples and homewarming gifts, as well as baby shower gift, because what better way to welcome your new baby into your home than to give s/he a non toxic place to live and grow! Highly recommend this book. Thank you Annie Bond for taking the time and love to write it!

This revised, paperback edition of a popular and successful McGraw-Hill book on housing design will reflect the subtle and dramatic changes that have affected the housing industry between the affluent 1980's. New case studies from the author, an architect with a growing reputation for quality housing design, will show the evolving demands coming from ever more diverse clients-from single-parent households to work-at-home professionals to people living with elderly parents at home. Improved graphics and photographs will help better illustrate some of today's more innovative solutions to kitchen design, family "home theater" rooms, basement workshops, and much more.

                              Book Description

Despite the plethora of writing about jazz, little attention has been paid to what musicians themselves wrote and said about their practice. An implicit division of labor has emerged where, for the most part, black artists invent and play music while white writers provide the commentary. Eric Porter overturns this tendency in his creative intellectual history of African American musicians. He foregrounds the often-ignored ideas of these artists, analyzing them in the context of meanings circulating around jazz, as well as in relationship to broader currents in African American thought.
Porter examines several crucial moments in the history of jazz: the formative years of the 1920s and 1930s; the emergence of bebop; the political and experimental projects of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s; and the debates surrounding Jazz at Lincoln Center under the direction of Wynton Marsalis. Louis Armstrong, Anthony Braxton, Marion Brown, Duke Ellington, W.C. Handy, Yusef Lateef, Abbey Lincoln, Charles Mingus, Archie Shepp, Wadada Leo Smith, Mary Lou Williams, and Reggie Workman also feature prominently in this book. The wealth of information Porter uncovers shows how these musicians have expressed themselves in print; actively shaped the institutional structures through which the music is created, distributed, and consumed, and how they aligned themselves with other artists and activists, and how they were influenced by forces of class and gender.
What Is This Thing Called Jazz? challenges interpretive orthodoxies by showing how much black jazz musicians have struggled against both the racism of the dominant culture and the prescriptive definitions of racial authenticity propagated by the music's supporters, both white and black.

5 out of 5 stars Required Reading for Anyone Interested in Jazz Criticism.......2004-01-04

As many fans realize, jazz music (and even the term "jazz" itself) is the source of much critical and cultural debate. There has always been a peculiar tension between the critics who define the music with culturally loaded terminology and the musicians who often view the art as something that cannot be adequately reduced in such a manner. Things have certainly become more complicated in the last thirty-five years, with the rise of the avant-garde. Many critics and even some musicians (e.g., Wynton Marsalis) have dismissed the most innovative developments in the music as being "non-jazz," which has culminated in a perspective whereby jazz has been codified, historicized, and, to some people, seems to be "swallowing its tail."

Eric Porter's excellent academic work delves deeply into the current debates on jazz, as well as provides a thorough overview of how musicians have defined their art in their own terms throughout the history of jazz. As with the history of any art (e.g., painting, photography, literature), it becomes apparent that what we get in jazz criticism is a series of narratives that occasionally correspond to one another but often tend to diverge markedly at various points. Porter's book is extremely valuable because it focuses on the voices that have not been adequately represented in the discourse on jazz-the voices of the musicians themselves.

What I particularly enjoy about Porter's book is its even-handed tone. The book is exhaustively researched and follows a logical progression from the rise of jazz in the early twentieth-century to modern times. His discussions of the essays of Duke Ellington, WC Handy, and prominent intellectuals (Zora Neale Hurston, WEB Dubois, Alain Locke et al.) are all placed in the context of a larger discussion of race, gender, economics, and American culture. At the same time, Porter's role is clearly that of a researcher and scholar; he is not someone who passes judgment on the thoughts of the musicians. He simply presents us with the information.

In addition to analyzing thoroughly the roots of jazz, there are lengthy and informative chapters on the development of bebop, the music and thought of Charles Mingus, and that of 60s stalwarts such as Leo Smith and Anthony Braxton. The discussion of Braxton's massive tomes (the Tri-axium Writings) is particularly welcome, since his universalist approach to music has put him in an unusual position with the regard to the jazz community, arguably since his contract with Arista expired over two decades ago. The discussion of the neo-conservative movement in jazz, led by Wynton Marsalis and Stanley Crouch, appropriately follows the discussion of Braxton's work and illustrates the challenges that jazz critics face as the music increasingly draws upon a myriad of musical forms that draw attention to the inadequacies of conventional criticism. What I particularly enjoyed was Porter's lucid discussion of the similarities as well as the differences in the thought of Braxton and Marsalis. Porter's organized presentation of such topics certainly enabled me to appreciate the thoughts of all the jazz musicians discussed in the book, whether I agreed with them or not.

The value of this book is that it not only shows the reader the viewpoints of the often neglected musicians, but also does not shy away from the critical, theoretical, and cultural complexities with which critics and musicians must deal in the future of jazz music. It is a valuable step indeed to understanding, if not definitively answering, "What is this thing called jazz?"

                              Book Description

Christopher Wilkinson uncovers a fascinating and unexplored side of American musical and social history in this richly detailed account of Don Albert's musical career and the multicultural forces that influenced it. Albert was born Albert Dominque in New Orleans in 1908. Wilkinson discusses his musical education in the Creole community of New Orleans and the fusion of New Orleans jazz and the Texas blues styles in the later 1920s during his tenure with Troy Floyd's Orchestra of Gold. He documents the founding of Albert's own band in San Antonio, its tours through twenty-four states during the 1930s, its recordings, and its significant reputation within the African American community. In addition to providing a vivid account of life on the road and imparting new insight into the daily existence of working musicians, this book illustrates how the fundamental issue of race influenced Albert's life, as well as the music of the era.
Albert's years as a San Antonio nightclub owner in the 1940s and 1950s saw the rise in popularity of rhythm and blues and the decline of interest in jazz. There was also increasing racial animosity, which Albert resisted by the successful legal defense of his right to operate an integrated establishment in 1951. In the two decades before his death in 1980, his performances in Dixieland jazz bands and interviews with oral historians concerning his own career were the fitting climax to a multifaceted musical life. Albert's voice and personality, his feelings and opinions about the music he loved, and the obstacles he faced in performing and promoting it, are artfully conveyed in Wilkinson's fluid, accessible, and erudite narrative. Jazz on the Road shows the importance of live performance in bringing jazz to America, and succeeds brilliantly in depicting an era, a locale, and a way of life.

5 out of 5 stars excellent book on a New Orleans trumpet player, the musician.......2001-12-02

Let me begin to say that an immensely hours on research must have been put in this book. One can almost follow Don Albert and his band day by day. The result is beautiful image of a reasonable successful territory band and the day tot day worries of an bandleader to keep his band going.

The autor has based his research in the first place on the Tulane Jazz Archive interviews with Don Albert and his musicians, Alvin Alcorn and Louis Cottrell jr. Next to it he sifted out national and regional newspapers looking for articles on and adverts for the Don Albert band. With these, The Chicago Defender was a primory source of information. This is a job every (New Orleans music) researcher is dreaming of. In 1982, in New Orleans, I went to the offices of the Louisiana Weekly somewhere on South Rampart Street, leaf through some back volumes of the periodical (everything is on microfilm). I found a treasure on information on bands from the 1910's and 1920's. The only problem, you got to have time and patience to go through all that. If only because of this, this book deserves a recommandation.

There are two chapters I found even more interesting than those dealing with the good and the bad days of the band during their touring, namely chapter one : 'A Musical Education in Creole New Orleans', and chapter eleven : 'The Second Keyhole, and a Fight for Social Justice'. It is very interesting following Don Albert during his youth in the ethnic and cultural very divers New Orleans. The account gives a more objectif image of the life in the Creole part of the city, the merge of the 'French-European' values of the Creoles with the 'American' of the poeple living Uptown, than what Sidney Bechet described in his autobiography, 'Treat It Gentle' or what Jelly Roll Morton told Alan Lomax. For some one who loves New Orleans music this chapter alone is a sufficient reason to buy this book. Chapter eleven on the other hand, tells the about the hard reality of Don Albert's return to New Orleans and the opposition he encountered in this town of the South of the US in the fifties to open a club. Until then, in Sanb Antonio, Don Albert had developed 'The Keyhole' into a modern, succesful nightclub with known acts and where White as well as Colored were welcome. Back in New Orleans, it was Don's intention to buy the 'Gipsy Tearoom' and to bring to the same level as 'The Keyhole'. But Don had not taken into account the laws of the South. On which Don returned to San Antonio to start a second Keyhole. But also there he had to deal with the same narrow minded mentality. Very interesting is also the story of Don Albert's return as a musician. It will not surprise you Bill Russell played a very important part in it.

I heard Don Albert twice during the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Jazzfestval (with Manny Crusto, Wendeel Eugene and Manny Sayles) in 1976 and 1979. He appeared to be a very comlpetent musician, although he did not had that inspiring hot style of Kid Howard, DeDe Pierce or Kid Thomas, but he rather fitted in the category of a Peter Bocage and Charlie Love. Even if his style is not one of the most exciting, the account of his life, as a musician, bandleader, clubowner and as a product of the amny cultures of his native city, reads as a novel. And this is not the sole merit of the writer. Once you start reading, you will not stop. A Very lovely book.

Expertly written by Larry Ross (a winner of the International Association of Jazz Educators Award for Outstanding Musicianship for the piano), African-American Jazz Musicians In The Diaspora is a methodical survey of the history of jazz music in the twentieth century, including jazz in Germany 1925-1945; jazz musicians in postwar Europe; the influence American culture had on the death rates of jazz and classical musicians; contemporary changes in the European jazz scene, and more. A thoughtful, extensively researched, and fact-filled discourse, African-American Jazz Musicians In The Diaspora is very strongly recommended for the academic library Black Studies, Music Studies and/or Music History reference shelf.

5 out of 5 stars Setting the Record Straight..........2003-09-24

The history of jazz has been told, re-told, written, re-written, presented and re-presented ad nauseum. An often revisionist chronicle of jazz neglecting certain aspects and exaggerating others has overwhelmed the amassing literature. With African-American Jazz Musicians in the Diaspora, Dr. Larry Ross a trained anthropologist but more importantly a skilled, seasoned, award-winning musician aims to set the record straight. In this timely text, Dr. Ross examines "some of the cultural and microeconomic externalities that contributed to the migration trends of African American jazz musicians" (p. 11). Through years of research, Dr. Ross brings a refreshing account of the historical and cultural significance of the innovations of numerous African American jazz musicians throughout the Diaspora. Interesting discussions on race, migration patterns, culture, class and aesthetics in addition to interesting facts make African-American Jazz Musicians in the Diaspora a unique and personal analysis worth reading.

California Soul is an original attempt to discuss the influence, growth, and style of blues, jazz, gospel, rhythm and blues, and soul music--the music of African Americans--in California. While the birth and subsequent growth of these styles in areas such as New Orleans, Chicago, and New York have previously been well documented, California's role in shaping the blues has not. In fact, the state is usually mentioned only as a footnote, if at all, in blues history. California Soul proves that the area's African Americans have, for over three-quarters of a century, shaped their own distinctive blues sound--one distinguished by a smooth sound, experimentation, and diversity. In essence, a sound that is influenced by California's own indigenous qualities.

The book's first section, "Music in an Urban Environment," documents the influence of California's urban centers on the state's blues sound. "Music and the Media" examines the trends and sounds that radio and musical recordings have brought to bear upon the state's blues music. "The Musician as Innovator," the third--and most personal--section focuses on individual artists, like early Motown's Brenda Holloway.

The book is less an overview of these influences than a number of deeply researched, specialized topics thread together by the common theme of African American blues in California. The result is a collection of scholarly articles rather than light reading or a comprehensive view of the subject. The academic bent of the articles results in a formal, often stiff writing style. Though some chapters offer intrinsically appealing topics (jazz trumpeter Clora Bryant's experience is especially interesting), the book is written mainly for scholars and fans deeply interested in the subject. --Kris Law

                                Book Description

This new series, co-sponsored with The Center for Black Music Research of Columbia College, seeks to increase our understanding of black music genres and their importance to the cultures of the Atlantic world, including their influence on African musical styles. Books in the series will examine the wide-ranging music of the African diaspora--including the folk-derived musical styles of the Americas as well as European-influenced concert hall music of the entire black Atlantic world--by analyzing issues critical to our interpretation of the music itself and exploring the relationships between music and the other black expressive arts.
Focusing on blues, jazz, gospel, rhythm and blues, and soul music, California Soul is one of the first books to explore the rich musical heritage of African Americans in California. The contributors describe in detail the individual artists, locales, groups, musical styles, and regional qualities, and the result is an important book that lays the groundwork for a whole new field of study. The essays draw from oral histories, music recordings, newspaper articles and advertisements, as well as population statistics to provide insightful discussions of topics like the California urban milieu's influence on gospel music, the development of the West Coast blues style, and the significance of Los Angeles's Central Avenue in the early days of jazz. Other essays offer perspectives on how individual musicians have been shaped by their African American heritage, and on the role of the record industry and radio in the making of music. In addition to the diverse range of essays, the book includes the most comprehensive bibliography now available on African American music and culture in California.

                                5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2000-11-01

I really liked this book. I'm a teacher in adult education and I found this to be a very accessible, personal account of Ms. Loebl's experiences as a teenager hiding from the Nazis in Belgium during World War II. In telling her story she manages to bring in a lot of background information for people who don't know much about the war. The students liked it a lot.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully Written, Extraordinarily Moving Autobiography.......2000-10-28

This autobiography is moving, beautifully written, and hugely important to Holocaust Studies, Jewish Studies, and contemporary European History.

As a memoir, _At the Mercy of Strangers_ alternates between two voices: that of the young German Jewish adolescent hiding from Nazi persecution (the book includes Loebl's actual diary that she kept while moving from place to place in Brussels) and the retrospective voice of Suzanne Loebl, accomplished art critic, children's book author, and science writer, who survived the war and moved to the U.S. in 1946. These two voices are so beautifully counterposed it is easy to see the resonances of each in the other.

Her hiding places risky, the identity papers her family purchased for her detectably false, often hungry, always always alone, Loebl's diary recounts her daily struggle to find employment as a maid or governess (her cover from Nazi detection) and the daily reality of working for employers who, realizing she was Jewish, often took advantage of her, sometimes fired her at whim, and excluded her from even the most basic human kindnesses. Buffeted about in war-torn Brussels, Loebl's interrupted education, the disappearance of Jewish family, friends, teachers, resistance fighters, her constant hunger (physical, emotional, and intellectual) do not fundamentally dampen her spirit, which is so large it spills beyond the margins of every page.

This book is so accomplished it is difficult to categorize; it includes so much World War II history woven in and out of both narrative voices it should be required reading for college students studying this historical period. As a piece of Holocaust literature, this book illustrates the complicated ways that the story of one highly intelligent, articulate German Jewish adolescent is, itself, a political one. (In the tradition of New German Cinema, I can see this book rewritten as a screenplay depicting the impact of World War II on the personal life of one individual.) Without a doubt, _At the Mercy of Strangers_ is also the finest autobiography this reviewer has ever read.

5 out of 5 stars A Personal Look at the Holocaust.......2000-10-23

As a child in grade school, I heard and read more than my share about the Holocaust, as I was very interested. But never has a book struck me in this way--pulled me in. It suddenly made me look at World War II in a different way. It gave the war a personal aspect for me...put a name and a face on it. This book has allowed me to look at the Holocaust in the different way.

At the Mercy of Strangers : Growing Up on the Edge of the Holocaust was a decent book that displayed the times and feelings of the times during the holocaust fairly well.
