Book Description
Brig. Gen. William Tatum Wofford's life spanned the greater part of the 19th century. He managed to be a part of most of the momentous issues that shaped Georgia history in that era. From the Mexican War in 1847-48 to the famous Georgia Constitutional Convention of 1877, Wofford left an indelible impression among his contemporaries. In the state legislature and in the Confederate military, he knew well the likes of Robert Toombs, A R Lawton, the Cobb brothers, Joseph E Brown, the Stephens brothers, James Longstreet, Robert E Lee, and Jefferson Davis. Even when they disagreed with him on political or military matters, these men were impressed with his probity, generosity, and high-mindedness. What Is This Thing Called Jazz?: African American Musicians as Artists, Critics, and Activists (Music of the African Diaspora)
Eric Porter Manufacturer: University of California Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0520232968 |
Book Description
Despite the plethora of writing about jazz, little attention has been paid to what musicians themselves wrote and said about their practice. An implicit division of labor has emerged where, for the most part, black artists invent and play music while white writers provide the commentary. Eric Porter overturns this tendency in his creative intellectual history of African American musicians. He foregrounds the often-ignored ideas of these artists, analyzing them in the context of meanings circulating around jazz, as well as in relationship to broader currents in African American thought.Customer Reviews:
Required Reading for Anyone Interested in Jazz Criticism.......2004-01-04
Eric Porter's excellent academic work delves deeply into the current debates on jazz, as well as provides a thorough overview of how musicians have defined their art in their own terms throughout the history of jazz. As with the history of any art (e.g., painting, photography, literature), it becomes apparent that what we get in jazz criticism is a series of narratives that occasionally correspond to one another but often tend to diverge markedly at various points. Porter's book is extremely valuable because it focuses on the voices that have not been adequately represented in the discourse on jazz-the voices of the musicians themselves.
What I particularly enjoy about Porter's book is its even-handed tone. The book is exhaustively researched and follows a logical progression from the rise of jazz in the early twentieth-century to modern times. His discussions of the essays of Duke Ellington, WC Handy, and prominent intellectuals (Zora Neale Hurston, WEB Dubois, Alain Locke et al.) are all placed in the context of a larger discussion of race, gender, economics, and American culture. At the same time, Porter's role is clearly that of a researcher and scholar; he is not someone who passes judgment on the thoughts of the musicians. He simply presents us with the information.
In addition to analyzing thoroughly the roots of jazz, there are lengthy and informative chapters on the development of bebop, the music and thought of Charles Mingus, and that of 60s stalwarts such as Leo Smith and Anthony Braxton. The discussion of Braxton's massive tomes (the Tri-axium Writings) is particularly welcome, since his universalist approach to music has put him in an unusual position with the regard to the jazz community, arguably since his contract with Arista expired over two decades ago. The discussion of the neo-conservative movement in jazz, led by Wynton Marsalis and Stanley Crouch, appropriately follows the discussion of Braxton's work and illustrates the challenges that jazz critics face as the music increasingly draws upon a myriad of musical forms that draw attention to the inadequacies of conventional criticism. What I particularly enjoyed was Porter's lucid discussion of the similarities as well as the differences in the thought of Braxton and Marsalis. Porter's organized presentation of such topics certainly enabled me to appreciate the thoughts of all the jazz musicians discussed in the book, whether I agreed with them or not.
The value of this book is that it not only shows the reader the viewpoints of the often neglected musicians, but also does not shy away from the critical, theoretical, and cultural complexities with which critics and musicians must deal in the future of jazz music. It is a valuable step indeed to understanding, if not definitively answering, "What is this thing called jazz?"

Jazz on the Road: Don Albert's Musical LIfe (Music of the African Diaspora)
Christopher Wilkinson Manufacturer: University of California Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0520229835 |
Book Description
Christopher Wilkinson uncovers a fascinating and unexplored side of American musical and social history in this richly detailed account of Don Albert's musical career and the multicultural forces that influenced it. Albert was born Albert Dominque in New Orleans in 1908. Wilkinson discusses his musical education in the Creole community of New Orleans and the fusion of New Orleans jazz and the Texas blues styles in the later 1920s during his tenure with Troy Floyd's Orchestra of Gold. He documents the founding of Albert's own band in San Antonio, its tours through twenty-four states during the 1930s, its recordings, and its significant reputation within the African American community. In addition to providing a vivid account of life on the road and imparting new insight into the daily existence of working musicians, this book illustrates how the fundamental issue of race influenced Albert's life, as well as the music of the era.Customer Reviews:
excellent book on a New Orleans trumpet player, the musician.......2001-12-02
The autor has based his research in the first place on the Tulane Jazz Archive interviews with Don Albert and his musicians, Alvin Alcorn and Louis Cottrell jr. Next to it he sifted out national and regional newspapers looking for articles on and adverts for the Don Albert band. With these, The Chicago Defender was a primory source of information. This is a job every (New Orleans music) researcher is dreaming of. In 1982, in New Orleans, I went to the offices of the Louisiana Weekly somewhere on South Rampart Street, leaf through some back volumes of the periodical (everything is on microfilm). I found a treasure on information on bands from the 1910's and 1920's. The only problem, you got to have time and patience to go through all that. If only because of this, this book deserves a recommandation.
There are two chapters I found even more interesting than those dealing with the good and the bad days of the band during their touring, namely chapter one : 'A Musical Education in Creole New Orleans', and chapter eleven : 'The Second Keyhole, and a Fight for Social Justice'. It is very interesting following Don Albert during his youth in the ethnic and cultural very divers New Orleans. The account gives a more objectif image of the life in the Creole part of the city, the merge of the 'French-European' values of the Creoles with the 'American' of the poeple living Uptown, than what Sidney Bechet described in his autobiography, 'Treat It Gentle' or what Jelly Roll Morton told Alan Lomax. For some one who loves New Orleans music this chapter alone is a sufficient reason to buy this book. Chapter eleven on the other hand, tells the about the hard reality of Don Albert's return to New Orleans and the opposition he encountered in this town of the South of the US in the fifties to open a club. Until then, in Sanb Antonio, Don Albert had developed 'The Keyhole' into a modern, succesful nightclub with known acts and where White as well as Colored were welcome. Back in New Orleans, it was Don's intention to buy the 'Gipsy Tearoom' and to bring to the same level as 'The Keyhole'. But Don had not taken into account the laws of the South. On which Don returned to San Antonio to start a second Keyhole. But also there he had to deal with the same narrow minded mentality. Very interesting is also the story of Don Albert's return as a musician. It will not surprise you Bill Russell played a very important part in it.
I heard Don Albert twice during the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Jazzfestval (with Manny Crusto, Wendeel Eugene and Manny Sayles) in 1976 and 1979. He appeared to be a very comlpetent musician, although he did not had that inspiring hot style of Kid Howard, DeDe Pierce or Kid Thomas, but he rather fitted in the category of a Peter Bocage and Charlie Love. Even if his style is not one of the most exciting, the account of his life, as a musician, bandleader, clubowner and as a product of the amny cultures of his native city, reads as a novel. And this is not the sole merit of the writer. Once you start reading, you will not stop. A Very lovely book.

California Soul: Music of African Americans in the West (Music of the African Diaspora, 1)
Manufacturer: University of California Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0520206274 |
Amazon.com
California Soul is an original attempt to discuss the influence, growth, and style of blues, jazz, gospel, rhythm and blues, and soul music--the music of African Americans--in California. While the birth and subsequent growth of these styles in areas such as New Orleans, Chicago, and New York have previously been well documented, California's role in shaping the blues has not. In fact, the state is usually mentioned only as a footnote, if at all, in blues history. California Soul proves that the area's African Americans have, for over three-quarters of a century, shaped their own distinctive blues sound--one distinguished by a smooth sound, experimentation, and diversity. In essence, a sound that is influenced by California's own indigenous qualities. The book's first section, "Music in an Urban Environment," documents the influence of California's urban centers on the state's blues sound. "Music and the Media" examines the trends and sounds that radio and musical recordings have brought to bear upon the state's blues music. "The Musician as Innovator," the third--and most personal--section focuses on individual artists, like early Motown's Brenda Holloway.
The book is less an overview of these influences than a number of deeply researched, specialized topics thread together by the common theme of African American blues in California. The result is a collection of scholarly articles rather than light reading or a comprehensive view of the subject. The academic bent of the articles results in a formal, often stiff writing style. Though some chapters offer intrinsically appealing topics (jazz trumpeter Clora Bryant's experience is especially interesting), the book is written mainly for scholars and fans deeply interested in the subject. --Kris Law
Book Description
This new series, co-sponsored with The Center for Black Music Research of Columbia College, seeks to increase our understanding of black music genres and their importance to the cultures of the Atlantic world, including their influence on African musical styles. Books in the series will examine the wide-ranging music of the African diaspora--including the folk-derived musical styles of the Americas as well as European-influenced concert hall music of the entire black Atlantic world--by analyzing issues critical to our interpretation of the music itself and exploring the relationships between music and the other black expressive arts.

At the Mercy of Strangers: Growing Up on the Edge of the Holocaust
Suzanne Loebl Manufacturer: Pacifica Press (CA) ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0935553231 |
Customer Reviews:
Great Book!.......2000-11-01
Beautifully Written, Extraordinarily Moving Autobiography.......2000-10-28
As a memoir, _At the Mercy of Strangers_ alternates between two voices: that of the young German Jewish adolescent hiding from Nazi persecution (the book includes Loebl's actual diary that she kept while moving from place to place in Brussels) and the retrospective voice of Suzanne Loebl, accomplished art critic, children's book author, and science writer, who survived the war and moved to the U.S. in 1946. These two voices are so beautifully counterposed it is easy to see the resonances of each in the other.
Her hiding places risky, the identity papers her family purchased for her detectably false, often hungry, always always alone, Loebl's diary recounts her daily struggle to find employment as a maid or governess (her cover from Nazi detection) and the daily reality of working for employers who, realizing she was Jewish, often took advantage of her, sometimes fired her at whim, and excluded her from even the most basic human kindnesses. Buffeted about in war-torn Brussels, Loebl's interrupted education, the disappearance of Jewish family, friends, teachers, resistance fighters, her constant hunger (physical, emotional, and intellectual) do not fundamentally dampen her spirit, which is so large it spills beyond the margins of every page.
This book is so accomplished it is difficult to categorize; it includes so much World War II history woven in and out of both narrative voices it should be required reading for college students studying this historical period. As a piece of Holocaust literature, this book illustrates the complicated ways that the story of one highly intelligent, articulate German Jewish adolescent is, itself, a political one. (In the tradition of New German Cinema, I can see this book rewritten as a screenplay depicting the impact of World War II on the personal life of one individual.) Without a doubt, _At the Mercy of Strangers_ is also the finest autobiography this reviewer has ever read.
